In the video, I show how to clean an electronic throttle body on my Cadillac STS and Cadillac Escalade. I use throttle body and air-intake cleaner from CRC to cut through the built-up carbon on both.
For best results take your car throttle off the intake manifold and disconnect from the wire harness. Then spray CRC throttle body cleaner on the throttle in a well-ventilated area while wiping with a clean towel. Repeat until you have a clean shine.
If your car is shifting funny you might want to change the TPS ( Throttle position sensor) and if your car is idling high or low you might want to change the IAC (Idle air control valve)

Heres a link to throttle body and injector cleaners so it will save you from buying a new throttle body. amzn.to/2u2drou
There is this guy on UA-cam cleaning the throttle body with the car running and spray directly into the throttle body there is a little hole just before the throttle body opening so he could stick that red tip in it and just spray while the car is running and spray through the intake and he says it cleans the valves
Thank you
L320 rrs o2 sensor replacement vids?
Will cleaning wipe away the check engine light? Thanks for the help!
@@mattsalazar9402 it all depends on what code popped up on your dash. This has turned off my light before and poured in injection cleaners has turned it off before. Just depends on what is causing your check engine light. But this is pretty much free and easy. Thanks for watching.
Thank You Brother , following Your directions I cleaned the throttle body on My 96 Suburban without removing it and it solved my sticking throttle and fast idle problem . Happy as a gopher with a new hole........
I watched a couple videos how to do this, then cleaned mine yesterday. today your video popped up and I gave it a look. I wish I saw your video before I cleaned mine. no one ever mentions the intake manifold. great video from someone who just cleaned their throttle body.
Paul Kolazinski just make sure that you change your pcv to prevent blow by and keep air filter in great shape, use lots of good fuel injector cleaner to prevent clogged injector wich will fualt out your plugs creating smog/carbon build up again!!!
Thanks, had check engine and red lightning light on in my 2014 dodge avenger. Couldn't get above 2k rpm and was worried, few bucks and 30mins of my time and it's working right again! Beats paying $500+ at a repair shop!
I would like to expand on what you said about "you can snap your finger" if you leave the throttle body pugged into the vehicle, it could energize in "ice break mode" if it does this it will close driven by the reduction gears and it could cut your finger severely. Your video is spot on, I just want others to know the danger for leaving it in circuit. Thanks!
I thank you for adding your comment.
Great video! I tried cleaning the throtle body yesterday and gave up because I opened up the wrong side ( air filter housing side) it didn't look like a throtle body was in there plus it was getting dark outside. Before taking my car to the dealership I came across your video and now I'm more confident about doing the job myself. You saved me hundreds!!! Thank you!!
You're welcome thanks for watching and I'm very impressed that you tackle this yourself.
Thanks for the video. My suv has an electronic throttle body and I didn’t realize there was a difference. Also I’m glad you’re wearing gloves and a mask. You don’t want to breath the fumes and the cleaner can be absorbed through the skin. I worked in a shop for many years and a lot of techs just don’t want to take the time. Thanks again!
Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.
agreed, though in all fairness, a surgical mask does nothing for aerosol/fumes and vapours (or viruses for that matter). You would need to wear a respirator to block such fumes. It does help with larger particles , dust , etc. Great video!
great video, you explain it very well. With all due respect I would like to add: be sure to cover the intake hole after you remove the throttle body, if you drop anything down into the engine, ie screw driver, nut, bolt, etc. you will have to get a knew engine or take your engine totally apart to retrieve said item. Again, great video, well done.
100% better than other videos that I have seen on cleaning throttle bodies ... Great job ... 👏👍
Thanks for sharing. I have the lighting bolt on my 2017 Jeep Patriot. I hate that there are so many place around Chattanooga, TN that rips off women when we take our car in to get fix. I am depress cause there is no tell what kind of quote I will get to fix my problem . After watching this video, it seems rather simple. I just do not have the confident to do it myself. Wish I was married to a mechanic.
I have a 91 Chrysler LeBaron with a 3.0L Mitsubishi engine. The Idle air control module is bad, so I ordered a replacement. The car is in good shape but has a lot of miles on it so I decided to do the whole job and clean everything. Your video is aces! Since my throttle body is mechanical, I'll remove it like you did to clean it. I suspect when I'm finished the car will idle and accelerate a whole lot better. Thank you for your help. It is most appreciated. Stay well in this terrible virus situation.
Excellent straightforward explanation of how to clean the throttle body! Thanks for helping other people with knowledge.
I'm researching how to clean my throttle body right. I appreciate the detail you went into. I'll try not to go crazy with the cleaner and thanks to you I'll make sure I clean the edge, which I haven't heard explicitly on other videos. I am thinking maybe I should take it off after watching the second throttle body cleaning. I'll need to do a bit more research about my exact vehicle to see what all might be involved with that.
'06 rrs. Opened back end and saw hardened carbon ring around the inside of the tube where the plate sits. After cleaning, no more idle fluctuations. Your instructions are wonderful. Thanks.
Man you saved me from taking this car to the dealer my c5, I did exactly what you said do and it worked, you saved me time and MONEY (Thank you)
I'm glad to help out a fellow Cadillac owner. Thanks for letting me know.

Good thing I learned to do maintenance on my first car besides oil and filters. While changing my oil sometimes I'll check the throttle body while it drains and do a quick cleaning if needed with shop towels from autozone and the cleaner is awesome, some shop while they did my AC i asked them how much and service was like $120 lmao, I saved more money doing work myself that I can do thank god.
My jaguar was running and idling really bad. Cleaning the throttle body fixed the problem. Thank you.
Akram Rabah you're welcome and thanks for watching.
Are you kidding... animals don't have throttle body
Help....l have a 2005 Ford focus with a 2.3ltr duratec ENGINE and trying to get a 67mm aftermarket throttle body( cable driven) ..any ldea where l can get them from????
But do you have to reset the throttle control after ? How do you reset it? Thanks
I'm done this on over five cars and I've never had to reset the throttle body once.
Thank you a million for your tuition it helped a lot I've been through different mechanic all 4 of them didn't quite exactly solve the problem in my Audie each one of em they made me buy unnecessary car parts for no reason whatsoever but since I've tried your methods there's a huge change on my car✅👍
I know I'm 6 years too late, but what a great video, you are very good at explaining things, top work man 👍👍.
So glad I saw this before spending $200 on a new part! Thank you!
back when i was a mechanic in the early 2000s we use to just spray it into the intake tube while it was running to clean the valves too. This was for older cars im not sure if you can do that for these newer cares
They still make adapters to go over the throttle body inline hose and spray to the throttle body but I like doing it the old slower way because you 100% clean everything off.
Thank you Sir. Good, easy to follow instructions. I have a 2011 SRX Cadillac with "Reduce Engine Power". Is it caused by dirty Throttle Body Chamber?
Great vid, very informative. Thanks for taking the time to make it. My only feedback is reduce the volume of the background music or leave it out completely, it was distracting and even drowned you out at some points.
Yes, the music needs turned down so to hear you better. What you are saying or teaching us is more important than the background sounds/music. Thank you sir!
Had surging problems with my car in cruise-control or normal driving particularly in the cold. Took it to two Dealers who service my make of car and they said they didn't know what the problem was other then to clean the injectors. Did the old youtube check and came across this, I did the clean and the car ran heaps better. Then I saw the Mass Air Flow sensor clean and cleaned that also and the car is running perfectly. Goes to show not all people who work at Dealers know their cars, and obviously saved myself a heap of dollars.
Really well made video, you explained everything well and you could see everything you were doing. That must have took some time to put together. Very much appreciated! Great job! Thank you!
Helpful video. Good explanation, visuals, lighting, etc (background music messing with my hearing and listening to you though). Very well done and helpful. Thanks.
Thank you so much. Yesterday Firestone told me it will cost $511.21 to replace mine!
I'm glad I was able to save you a little bit of money.
You ARE the man.....Great video, great explanation, great hi-res pics. I will do this and MAF cleaning on my 2004 Ford F-150, 4-1L to try to get rid of my check engine light so I can pass inspection. Thanks again. Be well.
Thanks and I appreciate your comment. Have a good day.
You doing very good job 👍👍👍👍
Very nice video 👌👌👌👌👌
Very good teaching very good Teacher
Thank you so much for Teaching
I like the way you do these , thorough and complete , nice work
Great details. Very nice. Now to figure out the throttle relearn process without a bi directional code reader. Thanks again!
We got a Ford Figo 2011,and the light comes on at times,so I'll be following your instructions and will give feedback..
Thanks for the video. I own an 06 sts with the northstar engine and I appreciate all the vids pertaining to your cadillac. Very helpful.
hey no problem and thanks for watching by the way nice car haha
Gillion Downer northstar sucks balls yo
Any head gaskets blown yet with that Northstar?
Cool. If you disconnect battery for 5min, the ecu should return to default settings which are correct for a clean throttle body. You could also use a scan tool to reset it.
When I'm already enjoying the video and than at 7:17 I see the ole "Vortec" and like it that much more because the vehicle I'm researching this for is a '95 Chevy Pickup! 😎 Great Video! 👍🤟
WARNING: Do not do this while the throttle body is on the vehicle. An electronic throttle body is built with a powerful motor and a gear reduction set that’s strong enough to cut off your fingers. If you force the throttle plate open while the unit is on the vehicle, it will try to close and may cause injury.
JAWGA MAN Thanks for the heads up mate, you might have just saved my fingers in the next couple of days
A mechanic told me that we may use a wooden stick to keep it open
and its fine
tomitomtom 👍
Just another question.... Is it safer IF i unplug the negatve battery pole to clean the throttle body
tomitomtom probably but I would unplug the TPS sensor from its power source.
Great job and details on the cleaning of the throttle body. I gotta clean or replace mine on an 2005 Chevrolet Uplander, never have messed with these electronic engines much but thanks to you and the video i think i can handle this job.
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
if you are going to clean the intake manifold how would you clean the core of the cylinder head in where we can see the intake valve stem, hard carbon deposits is more likey accumulate the space, As far what I see you shown to us (throttle body) the small amount of dirt iinside the TB is not sufficient enough reason that your engine is getting abnormal function , may be somehow some other reason, try to look for it
You gave me EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW??? YOU ARE WONDERFUL!! THANK YOU!!!!
That (Lip) up in there is a Butterfly to us oldschool machines a Blade to the new school computer button pushes. Good video and the removal cleaning will work wonders CRC throttle body and Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner is my choice.
Great video... I'm getting a can of CRC and cleaning my 3 vehicles throttle bodies... thank you for the awesome video.
Great video,so easy to understand!! 👍 ...and I was so busy listening to you I didnt even notice any music!! I'm amazed some complained!
Thank you.
Good Job Brother!!! I did it to a 91 Sentra w a GA16DE AND WOWEEEE 180,000 miles...it ran like NEW!!! But the guy I got it from had put the cheapest A-zone wires on it...I am still amazed it ran good enough to pass smugg...after I got the correct 7mm Wires on it...ohhhh man...night n day...now it runs...heehee... awsome...
This is very helpful. I am female and tired of being ripped off
It should be noted that if you have any plastic inside the throttle body be careful using solvents. It can ruin the throttle body. If you're not sure if you can use a solvent, use Sea Foam. It's strong enough to clean it, but mild enough that it won't ruin the coating used in some throttle bodies.
The music wasn't too bad, but a little distracting. Plus there were birds, which I liked.
Mann 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent video and instruction. Thanks bro. Did this before putting on a CAI!
How do you Auto down a 1980 eldorado barrettes one is running high
Thanks for the video and the music. My '97 Ford Ranger pick up truck has an issue with a high idle speed issue when the engine is warmed up. It stays idling high for a 4-5 seconds after the truck comes to a stop. Coming off the freeway, the idle will stay high for about 7-8 seconds. The "Check Engine" light comes on and the OBD II shows a possible issue with the Idle Speed Control Valve...which I have replaced with a new one...and after the proper steps to reset the ECU...the Check Engine light came back on after driving the vehicle on the highway...and the same high idle speed problem comes back. I will now do a throttle body cleaning as in your video, on the thought that maybe a dirty and sticky throttle plate is not able to return to its proper position...and see if that solves the problem. The new replacement Idle Speed Control Valve may be faulty as well, but because it is new...a dirty throttle body is more likely the issue. Do you think a faulty throttle position sensor might also be faulty? Any further ideas to help resolve this high idle speed issue is greatly appreciated.
First off thanks for watching. It is possible that it could be the TPS also but cleaning the throttle body is easy and cheap. While II had everything apart I changed the IAC valve too. Let me know the results. Thanks again.
Throttle body just cleaned. With 162k miles on the odo, I was looking a a layer of "tar" on the backside of the throttle plate and the surrounding inner wall of the throttle body. Surprisingly, the throttle plate wasn't sticking when I rotated it. Unfortunately, the cleaning didn't resolve the idle speed issue...and after running the engine to full warmed state, the Check Engine came back on. Tomorrow, I'll try O'reilly's Auto to buy a different IAC valve and see if the current replacement valve was also faulty. If the problem persist, I'll see about a TPS replacement. However, the OBD II has only given a diagnosis of a faulty Idle Speed Actuator Valve. I'll know tomorrow if the first replacement IAC valve was also faulty or I'll need to look into a new TPS next. I'll be updating my findings soon. Thanks again!!!
I'm pulling for you. I have been down that road before and it's not fun or easy but atleast you have somebody that understands what you are going through.
Do those throttle body have gasket fitted in as well.
. Ive always used a tooth brush and cleaned the plate and especially the thin edge where the carbon build up effects the closing position and performance of the idle
Thank you for this. My Mitsubishi 2.5 Engine 4x4.Strada(L200) pick up Truck's Throttle don't close and I do not know if this Method will work or do I need to replace it? Kindly advise.
I would give out a try and of it still doesn't close you might need a throttle or sensor..
one of the best videos I seen thanks! I have a cadillac 2004 cts and my car for some reason didn't acellarate at all my throttle cost 220$ I clean the outside and it works but I will clean the inside to get better performance
Thanks for watching, I appreciate the nice comment. I'm glad the video helped. Thanks again
Thanks for the tips. Watched the video, cleaned the tb and now there's no more hesitation. Smooth as silk.
I'm glad I could help and give yourself a pat on the back because you just saved about a $100. Thanks for watching.
On my Dodge Journey you have to recalibrate the TB using a scan tool.
Excellent video,👍👍👍🇨🇦
Excellent info man! Thanks. I picked up a can of cleaner at noon today. Will use it this weekend.
Thank you for watching and let me know how it goes.
Nissan N16 Sunny 2003
I have a problem with RPM - it's completely unstable
The Throttle nail has been moved - and the idle sensor has also been moved
How do I return the Throttle nail to the original factory position?
Great video! I like preventing! Rather then masking!! Air filter, plugs!!! And lots of fuel injector cleaner to prevent clogged injector! Those three if bad equal carbon build all over! I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner and laquar thinner to keep things clean!
Hey man, thanks so much for the great video. I got the Seafoam version of what you have and that thing was practically telling me to empty the bottle in there, i knew that sidnt sound right. Thanks for confirming that it's not the way to go. Oof!
Was dead on the road, had to get towed home. Truck not getting fuel, wouldn't start. Checked a lot of things that led to the throttle body, shot some spray wiped with a rag and was running again. I should remove it and do a good cleaning.
I'm doing this to my car on the weekend and this video was a great help 👍👍
Let me know the outcome. Thanks for watching. You have a nice day.
Glad you ended up cleaning the edge of the valves. If you don’t the carbon build up won’t allow the valve to close fully and then that negatively affects the computers calculations for a smooth ride.
This is the video that really helped me learn about cleaning throttle body. Thanks !!
do you think it's a good idea to remove the while manifold assembly and give a thoroughly pressure wash/ cleaning ? is that necessary 🤔 ?
Very easy to understand video! Thank you for sharing this info!
I like your statement & your DIY attitude. Glowing Cleaning!!! Happy New Year.
Good thing you removed the TB off the second vehicle. Worth the effort. Thanks for posting this video!
After disassembling and cleaning the throttle, an idle defect may occur, therefore an idle adjustment process must be performed after cleaning, there are several methods depending on the type of vehicle. Also, it is important to lubricate the moving parts of the throttle by using WD40.
adjusting by tuning?
Great video. I have to completely clean my throttle body on a 1995 Lincoln Town Car that has 175,000 miles. This is exactly the help I needed. Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
Hi where is the throttle body location on a 2008 Chrysler voyager 2,8CRD diesel Thanks
I'm not 100% sure where the throttle body is located on your vehicle. But if you just follow the air intake to the engine you will find exactly where the throttle body is located.
Thanks for the video, was needing to clean the IAC valve on my gf's truck, now I think I might as well clean the whole throttle body.
Justin Workman You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Got it nice and clean. The IAC was too far gone to save, but now the truck is running great. Thanks again, bud.
That's good to hear, thanks for letting me know. You have a good one.
Very good video...I watched a few others that really didn't show or tell what you did...Thanks 👍👍
This throttle body is very easy to access. It’s a bit of a pain to access and remove the TB when the intake manifold is near the firewall.
Just did this on my Camry. Just did it by hand and disconnected to the negative terminal.
I agree with you
Good video, thank you. Being a woman I like to learn as much about cars as possible so i don't get ripped off...
You're welcome and feel free to ask any question you need help too.
i have a 1987 ford ranger that dont have the power that it should have and it idles up high and low. its a 4 cylinder. i was wondering if this is what the problem is a dirty throttle body or would it be the sensors?
After I cleaned my I did notice a difference. Let me know after you clean it, what's the verdict.
i will let you know soon as our weather gets better....were in for a bad snowstorm....
Great Video keep up the good work. The only thing I would have done different is pull that red rubber seal out before spraying the cleaner just in case.
can you clean it with brake cleaner if it is off the car?
thanks dear very nice video despite the music greetings from your followers in Kuwait
Great vidio,no B.S.,just the straight dope! Thank you for your effort.
Thanks for the illustration, great job.
You can also take some metal polish and polish the the intake and throttle body. That will make it more difficult for debris to start collecting.
Do not polish were the throttle body flange hits! That could cause a leak. But everything else! Make it smooth as glass. 👍
I had to remove mine to take off my starter on my journey. I spilled a bunch of coolant when moving hoses out of the way so I rinsed it off with the water hose. While I did this, water got in the intake and I didn't know I couldn't push the plate. Did I damage it when I pushed it in to remove the water? It's throwing the code now when it wasn't before the starter removal.
What codes?
Outstanding and very informative video. Thank you
Just a tip, using ACF-50 on your electrical sensors, does wonders for protection. They only use that product on airline jets, most likely the military also.
Music is a little distracting for being loud. But the video is informative.
I didnt even notice the music...I was too busy listening to him! 😁
Honestly stop being a pussy and open your ears
Learnt a lot...Keep on teaching brother..All you haters stay out..

You're welcome and thanks for the support.
Thanks, young Kareem Abdul-Jabbar! :D
Haha that is a first. Thanks for watching.
Man, You are my hero! Many MANY thanks for your advice.... You just save my day! Hello from Montreal Canada! Have a nice one Brother!
tomitomtom You're welcome and I'm glad the video helped you and your dad out. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. This was a very informative and helpful video for do it yourselfers like me.
Thank you and you're welcome. Was your throttle body dirty?
@@oxmanagain Yes, with a carbon deposits on the intake manifold side, and clogged up port from the egr valve.
Yes that was a little dirty. After cleaning the throttle body and everything you mentioned did it make a big difference?
Hi. I have a 1994 Nissan truck xe. It run 950 rpm, after I clear the throttle body the run at 1000-1050 now any idea why. Thanks advanced
Sometimes after you clean the throttle body it will adjust itself or you have to adjust it. It's common for it to run a little higher because you are getting more air. Especially if your throttle body was dirty then you're getting considerably more air.
Did you clean the IAC valve with the same spray?
No, they have a separate one for that.
should I disconnect the negative terminalmbefore removing the throttle body?
Sure, that is always a good idea.
@4:23 that was a 3 second burst lol ... oh man, I watched to the end. wanted to hear you start it up!
I saw a video a while back, this person was working on a 08 Silverado throttle body and he said a idle learn reset on it had to be performed. Is that only for certain cars/trucks?
Hi I'm trying to see if I can do this to a 06 charger srt8 but do I have to do a relearn procedure? Or can I just take it off and clean it and reinstall..thanx !
When I did mine it just relearned on it's own and it took about 2-3 minutes.
I'm trying it on Friday thanks for the quick reply!! 😬
Good, let me know how it goes.
Nice job. Very clear video. 👌 Maybe lower the music?
Nice video and good explanations. My only observation is the volume of your background music. Lower your levels, there are a few places where I needed to replay what you were saying.
Need help 2000 Buick century first overheating changed thermosat feilsafe removed trottle body to install would not run without dieing cleaned idle sensor was dirty then spark plugs still won't idle dieing now cat converter is glowing red hot what should I do next
I would have the cat check out first. Years ago my dad had a car almost catch on fire due to a bad cat.
