Actually, I think LPL just convinced me that this lock is a great deal. It's only $3. For $3 you get a bike lock that will make it LOOK like your bike is secured which will deter most people from bothering. I figure for three dollars it's value is purely in deterrence value. The same as non-functional camera shells. 3 dollar piece of plastic, your average robber is slightly less likely to break into your house because it looks like it has a camera.
Yeah it's more of a psychological thing. I don't know the numbers, but I would bet money that even the cheapest lock in the world would deter potential theft significantly
@@garywilliams6124 To be perfectly honest an expensive is going to get stolen no matter what lock you use, if you leave it outside because you used bike to commute, go to library etc. As the LPL mentions, you should always carry the bike or leave it under someone's surveillance unless you're riding the walbike and the likes. At that point anything that remotely resembles a lock would stop people.
@@garywilliams6124 Most security measures are psychological. It's almost impossible to create ACTUAL security, just various levels of temporary deterrence. How thorough that deterrence has to be depends on who you expect to be trying to take your stuff. Even a really cheap lock will put off most casual, opportunistic thieves. A fairly solid one might put off a more professional thief. But probably only because there's an easier target nearby... But I doubt you'll stop anyone taking your stuff with any kind of lock or other security device, no matter how good it is. Because it's still not good enough...
I hate to go against the grain here, but that's not a bad value for $3. Please show me a better bike lock for the same price. It would serve the purpose of deterring someone looking for a completely unlocked bike. Of course you should get a proper lock, but if your bike is only worth $20 it's better than nothing...

@@petermichaelgreen It's definitely interesting to consider since so many people end up committing crimes for so many different reasons. Although it's just so convenient to paint them all the same, there is a difference between a big money career criminal, gang related planned thefts/burglaries, a petty opportunist street thief, and even a homeless person trying to make it to tomorrow. While obviously there's little that can be said to justify crime - as an example, in heavy snow deep wilderness areas, there's typically a laws that make it legal to break into a cabin, house, remote shelter, etc. should anyone be lost out in the middle of nowhere, a legitimate life or death situation(obviously them breaking in, eating some food and taking some fuel or something is significantly different than the aforementioned 'common criminals') - this is still a very complex and layered aspect of society, one that most prefer to slap a generic one-size-fits-all 'bad person' label on it, then shove it in a closet to be ignored after the smallest amount of logic has been invested. It would certainly be quite interesting to see some kind of research into this, seeing how it breaks down, but it isn't like anything like this will be funded anytime soon - just shove it in the back of the closet and ignore it

By watching you and bill over the last year I am terrified about any lock I see storing anything. I even told my company what junk they are buying. They dont listen btw.

Thieves see a U lock and don’t even try. Honestly, you don’t even have to lock it onto a bike to scare people away. You can, in most places (excluding high crime areas), just make it sorta look like it’s locked onto the seat and they don’t steal it. They carry bolt cutters, not lock picks and shims
@@Guythatyoudontknow I most people use cable locks, they are so much more convenient. Also, everything you said contradicts with my knowledge of bike thefts, which have happened to me twice, and many others I know, in high crime areas. I have, during a few times where I was sprinting to my destination, just set the lock to where it looked sorta locked up in the middle of various “sketchy” downtown areas, and it’s never been stolen
@@AFN2750 I’m not saying it’s an ineffective deterrent most of the time for relatively short amounts of time (which is to say it deters thieves who only possess a bolt cutter), I’m just saying it’s basically a bare minimum sort of deal for a good bike I also see posts every day for stolen bikes in local FB bike groups, and most of them have ulocks, so I’m glad your experience with them has not disappointed you thus far

The first lock I ever tried to open was a 5 pin lock to a gun case I lost the key to. I pushed the file on some nail clippers into the keyhole, applied a little tension and wiggled it up and down and the lock opened. Convinced it was a fluke I repeated it about a dozen times in disbelief. Since then I have basically lost faith in any traditional lock. Obscurity seems to be a better defense than anything under $100 can get you.
I think your best bet is over kill. 5 shit chain locks 10mm at £5 each that would mean using a bolt cutter ten times, or mean pissing about with opening five locks. Most people can't lock pick as fast as him so they will see 5 locks and think, fuck that. Ha.
TheaDragonSpirit that's my approach. A thick galvanized cable with swaged crimps, and a hardened steel chain with two separate locks. I also have a brake lever lock and caliper lock I never use, but it really wouldn't make sense for someone to go through the trouble for my $300 bike when more expensive bikes are left unsecured all over the city
I'd like to think of myself as an honest person. But when i see locks this bad, i feel the urge to do something. Break it, bypass it, whatever. Not to be malicious, just to prove a point. Still. Locks like this one are so bad, it tempts the honest person who wouldn't have been interested in the first place
it's security theater. Speaking as someone who has had more than one bike stolen in the past, I would rather guard my bike with a schizophrenic transient than with this lock.
Since this lock is only $3 you can easily get 15 locks for the same price a good one costs and if you lock up your bike with 15 locks I think you should be ok.
Haha, you've found it - finally - the worst lock in the world and for only 3$. You should submit it to the Guinnes world record book. And it even has it's own smell ;-) Great video.

They're called dollar stores because the prices are in even dollar amounts (e.g. $5.00 instead of $4.99). Which is silly when you think about it, considering that sales tax is still a thing, and a lot of items are round but not dollar amounts, e.g. $1.50

I'm not sure this is better than the version they could have made for $2 where they leave out the lock mechanism and just give you a shimming tool to open it.
My thoughts exactly. For residential use, just seeing a lock is enough of a deterrent for most people, especially kids. Just because they CAN open something doesn't mean they'll try.

Bruhh if you buy a 3$ lock you might as well just let the robber have it. 😂😂😂
I figure for three dollars it's value is purely in deterrence value. The same as non-functional camera shells. 3 dollar piece of plastic, your average robber is slightly less likely to break into your house because it looks like it has a camera.
So you're say I should steal the bike?
Because it's still not good enough...
the lock itself may be terrible, but the key says "cock" on it, and that's pretty funny.

I hate to go against the grain here, but that's not a bad value for $3. Please show me a better bike lock for the same price. I was in uniform and working yesterday, and went to the ACE Hardware in town to find a good padlock. Another guy was also there trying to find a Master. While we were both waiting I mentioned to him that Masters are a "beginning pickers" lock. He told me as long as he had something that took at least a key or combination, his insurance company would replace his boat no matter what. After watching this video, I think he made a great choice between the Master 40mm plastic and this piece of junk!
I wonder if it even occurs to people that apathetic attitudes like that probably are responsible for significantly higher insurance rates.

He would just walk up to the nearest BMW [they were everywhere in those days and most people didn't lock the trunks] take out the jack and would place it between the U and crank it open. Ping. 4 turns of the crank and the "hardened" steel just popped open. 30 seconds and on his way.

Seeing both crime gangs and crackheads in action, literally none of them lockpick and always go for the brute force method because most of the time its quicker. Thieves see a U lock and don’t even try. Honestly, you don’t even have to lock it onto a bike to scare people away. You can, in most places (excluding high crime areas), just make it sorta look like it’s locked onto the seat and they don’t steal it. They carry bolt cutters, not lock picks and shims
this is only the case in areas where bike theft is low, bikes predominantly use cable locks, and your bike is not very expensive
@@AFN2750 I’m not saying it’s an ineffective deterrent most of the time for relatively short amounts of time (which is to say it deters thieves who only possess a bolt cutter), I’m just saying it’s basically a bare minimum sort of deal for a good bike

LOL.
Obscurity seems to be a better defense than anything under $100 can get you.
yeah same. i've seen some cheap pad locks where you just shove the long end from the tension wrench in the keyway, wiggle it around and it flips open.

You know you're getting ripped off when an item at a "dollar" store costs more than a Dollar.
