      theres a big missunderstanding, the lock is there to secure the gun from a fast grab not anti theft.
      you cannot secure an ar15 in a gunrack that allows fast access anyway. 2 pins could break that gun apart and let it slide out.
      with some practice maybe even faster than picking that lock with a professional tool

    It's shocking that such an easily defeated system is so widely used.

    • @WJS774
      @WJS774 3 роки тому +19

      Can you do it when the cuffs are properly applied behind your back? I kind of doubt that. Handcuffs are quite adequate for what they are intended to be. Handcuffed prisoners aren't supposed to be left unattended.

    • @breetaylor4586
      @breetaylor4586 2 роки тому +10

      @@WJS774 yes, when you’re cuffed in a standard cuffing position, it isn’t too difficult to pull your hands under and around your butt to bring them back in front of you so you can see what you’re doing. The cuffs are probably going to be tight enough where you can’t rotate your wrists without serious injury in the cuff itself, and your range of motion will be seriously limited because your tendons have almost no wiggle room to move around in, but you can either use a long enough paper clip/wire from one hand to the keyhole at the hand on the other side, or use a paper clip/wire in your mouth.
      The cuffing position where you have one hand from above your shoulder (think scratching the back of your neck) and the other hand from below (think standard cuffing position), however, is a pain in the ass. Unless you have crazy loose arm/shoulder joints or the cuff is too lose and/or chains too long, you’re probably stuck with your hands behind you, removing the option to use your mouth to hold your tool of choice.
      This all changes once you’re dealing with cuffs that don’t use a stereotypical/cheap design, however.

    • @WJS774
      @WJS774 2 роки тому +19

      @@breetaylor4586 Well the point is that when you move the cuffs around in front of you, the cop with you is supposed to stop you. Also don't forget that the keyhole is supposed to be on the side of the cuffs _opposite_ your hands and the palms are supposed to be facing outwards. There are a lot of obstacles if they have been applied properly, when people manage to escape it's typically that the officer cuffing them did something wrong.

This can happen when confiscated, during routine investigation such as during a traffic stop, pawn shop check, inquiry by the person in possession, or during a Coast Guard boarding. The other way, unfortunately, is when it's recovered from a crime scene. The only way you can be 100% sure it's not stolen or used in a previous crime is if you buy it new from a FFL dealer. And the only way you can be reasonably sure you're not selling it to a criminal is if you sell it to a FFL dealer. Even police are not allowed to freely access the database. It simply tells if a particular serial number is stolen, then it logs the ID of the officer that asked that question and it's flagged for follow up.

      in other words, i believe the handcuffkey is double bad as it makes the lock unsave against the group of people wich pose the biggest threat to the police.

      I presume they use that key as if the officer gets into another vehicle then he know HIS key will fit. Although if they have the electromagnetic release then what’s the point. Unless they have a power failure.

      Oh no doubt. consumer ignorance and the lowest bidder concept are often times bed partners in things like this.
      How do I say this with a bit of ambiguity...while I am not LEO, the same rules that apply to their budget and decision making, apply to my particular organization. Often times what particular piece of equipment used is decided by someone in a different field with no real and/or practical knowledge of the device or the need it is supposed to fill. Also often, a need for equipment is realized and the job of filling it is contracted out to a 3rd party lowest bidder. This seems great to a budgeting committee but in reality it often times causes more problems then it solves simply because the decision makers and/or 3rd party are not familiar with the infrastructure and systems already in place.

      LockPickingLawyer, watching the video I was a tad disappointed that you only addressed this from one perspective, but I accepted it because you focus is obviously locks, not police tactics, and nobody is perfectly impartial and fair, myself very much included. Seeing you down here taking part in the one-sided roasting with the commenters is a little more disappointing though.
      Could it be that maybe the existince of a possible vulnerability isn't the only factor when it comes to selecting a gun lock like this? Maybe in an emergency situation the agency likes that any given officer who happens to be near that car is able to retrieve that weapon or that the officers don't have to deal with the overhead of a separate unique key.
      So that's an upside. We already know the downside, but how big of a downside is it in practice? There are two main challenges for a lock. One is targets of opportunity, the other is someone who's hell bent on getting in, where the goal is to make it a less appealing target or inconvenience them long enough that they can be busted. Now, common as these handcuff keys may be, someone who's likely to try grabbing a gun from a squad car in the heat of the moment isn't likely to have one handy, nor have a pick or a shim, let alone a neodymium magnet, though those latter two exploits are something I CAN fault the manufacturer for. That combined with having to have the intent and the knowledge of how this particular lock works and the knowledge that the agency in your area is using this version takes care of 99.9% of the concern, the target of opportunity.
      What's left is the possibility of a premeditated attack, which would require someone to not only come up with this plan and choose it over other means of obtaining a firearm, but to then find an unattended, unlocked police car somewhere and then get away with a long gun.
      All in all I'd probably be more worried about the vulnerability of someone knocking out a police officer with a baseball bat or a half brick and taking the gun off their belt. Modern holsters make snatching the gun away in a fight difficult, but there's no lock on them at all.

  • @bobjones5166
    @bobjones5166 6 років тому +5

    I know this is little to settle your mind about how bad this lock is but most police agencies consider the cars lock to be the main security for the weapon not the guns lock. That is just secondary since it is a bit harder to get into the car. And as with most locks they are to keep the honest folks honest. Thx m8 and keep up the great work.

    That's scary. Law enforcement weapons, especially those kept in public view, should be very well secured. Secured to a standard at least equal to but preferably higher than weapons owned by the public are required to be.
    The magnet exploit is especially scary as it requires no skill and works no matter what lock core the lock contains. That exploit alone enables someone to steal the gun in seconds, putting a law enforcement weapon in the hands of a criminal.

      tallman11282 my only thought about the magnet exploit is that I don't know how this lock is expected to be installed, and perhaps the place where the magnet is placed may not be accessible to an exploiter when properly installed in the wild.
      I mean it doesn't excuse the other exploits, which are quite bad.

    • @Inkompetent
      @Inkompetent 6 років тому +1

      Considering the direction in which the upper portion of the lock opens the magnet-side would be against a mounting surface, which one can hope is a wall or the like, so I it is unlikely that it would work. Shimming might also be difficult if the lock is installed properly since it'd be hard to reach in with the shim, so that only leaves the key lock itself. If it isn't installed in a sensible manner however.... Yikes.

    • @sarowie
      @sarowie 6 років тому +1

      +Willy T This is not about cops and different standards. Ever worked for or with an administration, paper pushing bureaucrats and penny pinching managers/politicians? If you can not check it on paper, it does not exist. If a union of lock makers would develop a standard and a testing institute, then we could translate this real world exploit into the language of bureaucracy: Locks in police cars have to confirm standard (insert name) and must be tested by (insert name). This would get lazy lock makers (speak: Managers that have no idea what their product is in reality and just see dollar signs) to invest in barely fulfilling this new standard, raising the bar of the limbo competition to the lowest possible price ever so slightly of the ground and making safety at least a secondary concern.

      I agree you can embed the body in a wall to prevent the magnet attack but you can't prevent the shim attack without blocking normal opening.

  • @siratthebox
    @siratthebox 6 років тому +6

    What is that lock's intended purpose?
    To hold a firearm in the back of a police car so that any officer can get access to it at a moment's notice.
    Most officer-lost-firearm deaths come from firearms the officer had on them at the time, not one the felon took from the car. A felon doesn't walk up to a police car and steal the shotgun out the back, they take the pistol from the officer's hands and shoot them with that. You also don't hear of many instances of felons breaking into cop cars to steal the shotgun when the vehicle is unattended...
    Improve the mechanisms sure, shield the lock from shims and magnets, but if a button in the car can open it why shouldn't a generic key?

    • @miialamia1653

  • @alexb.1320

    I suspect the police car spec is simply to keep a casual passerby from quickly grabbing the firearm, not retention of the firearm from someone willing to spend some time defeating the lock or mechanism. And there is the consideration for extreme circumstances and accessibility that does not require a lot of dexterity to open should the need arise.

    • @sarowie
      @sarowie 6 років тому +4

      I suspect the police car spec reads more like "lowest bid gets the contract".

    • @alexb.1320
      @alexb.1320 6 років тому +2

      Lowest bid is a big factor, but places that require tender bids have minimum specs or specific item requests for bids.(I work in such a place). That handcuff key spec for instance is one that is specifically requested by departments for whatever reason they base their decision on, be it common key so any officer can access the firearm quickly without needing the vehicle key to hit the mag lock trigger because they already have the cuff key, and it is one less extra key they need to carry. And there is the fact that until recently (well, probably 10 years or so give or take, varies all over) long arms where in an unsecured rack for many departments. These simple locks are just to keep the casual passerby from grabbing the firearm not be a strong box intended to survive a specific attack and retain the firearm. In a SHTF situation, you don't want your officer having a cumbersom lock to deal with when their fingers are bloodied and needing to fight with a lock--those are the kinds of things that get looked at as well. Locks keep out the honest people, and thats what these simple locks amount to.
