Figured a 40-minute behemoth would be a decent return. Paper Mario 64 will take a bit, but I'll have a different video out before it. Anyways, have a nice day! =D
42:19 "Maybe one day, Mario RPG will come back. And we'll get a remake..." It only took a couple years after making this video, so not a terribly long wait!
This is the first time I've ever herd someone say they didn't know what a super Nintendo was.. I beat this title before you were even born. Wow I feel old. Really great video though. I'm glad my favorite games still find new fans.
If a sequel or remaster ever did happen, I would love to see Luigi with an expanded role, and there's three possible scenarios for that I would be happy with; 1. Have him be an NPC who gives you a helpful item every now and then when you talk to him. 2. Make him an optional party member you can recruit after completing some sort of sidequest. Or 3. In terms of handling it in the same vein as the Mario and Luigi 3DS remakes, include an additional story with him as the lead, forming his own team and going on a different adventure entirely. In which case, I know the perfect team. Luigi himself would obviously be the middle man, being around average in all stats, Professor E. Gadd could be the medic, using different kinds of new gadgets for healing and inflicting statuses, Daisy could be like Tifa Lockhart, being very strong and fast on her feet... and I admittedly haven't thought of what Waluigi or King Boo would specialize in, but I liked this set up, because they're all characters more associated with Luigi than Mario, and it could give some love to some of the most underutilized characters in the whole franchise. Like I know this is all just hypothetical, but seriously, how cool would a side story like this be, if it were to happen?
They would have to replace Ultima/ Culex fight for a more Mario themed boss. One of the easter eggs and also an event that required some seriously cryptic bs chain of events to trigger and you could fail permanently on a save file to do something at the time right time early on and not even know you screwed yourself out of the boss fight.
Very cool to come across this. It’s interesting to me hearing the perspective of those who didn’t grow up with this game and came to it with some characterization of the Mario universe in mind. I remember getting this game just before my 7th birthday in 1996. I was a HUGE Mario fan because of 3 & World and the cartoon series. This was such a cool and unique experience because, as you mentioned, this world barely had characterization up until this point. Thanks for this. Really enjoyed it
It's awesome that we share almost exact sentiments regarding this game. I'll be turning 33 this year and played this game when I was 8 years old. Growing up and playing this was very tough for me too, difficulty-wise, that is. I ended up understanding certain mechanics after a few more tries (like the forest maze star boss) but others--such as the 3D puzzle on the ship that you mentioned--I also struggled with that vehemently! What fond, and also, ardently-fueled memories you have stirred within me. Thanks for such a great retrospective of one of my all-time favourites SNES games!
Man I feel old I loved playing this elementary school. My first RPG and what got me hooked in storytelling in games in general. I’ve introduced so many friends to it and they loved it too.such a great game wish they’d do something more with it!
that song brought me back man! watched your other vids and wow we have the same nostalgia, super cool to hear someone talk about similar middle school memories lol. you've earned a sub and i hope to see more from you!!
Sweet! I should note that I'm currently on break from UA-cam while I finish up the writing for the DDLC mod I'm working on. (I'm actually pretty close to being done to be fair. So close that I've already began editing the videos I'm returning with.) It'll still be a bit, but I hope you can wait a little longer!
I was actually a kid when this first came out. I was gifted this for Xmas on year because my parents knew I liked Mario (They had no idea what this was other than "A Mario game") and bless them for trying! It was my first RPG, and I had no idea what was going on I was 9. But It kept my interest and I remember loving the game back then. The idea that Bowser was on your side for once always fascinated me, painting him as not so much a villain so much as a Rival. To Echo your thoughts, That 3D Maze can stay in the depths of hell where it belongs. I could NEVER beat it back then, and I wasn't smart enough as a kid to solve the puzzle so I actually had my dad help me. To this day it remains one of my favorite memories as he guided me towards the answer as opposed to just telling me. Still, screw that maze. Then right after that you fight Yaridovich and I still have nightmarish flashbacks to Water Blast. Like I said... I was young. And dumb. I put all my stats into HP cause I thought More HP meant I live longer and therefor win! Yeah... no This is a game I just adore. I will play through it every year for fun, It's not too long as you pointed out and I can finish it in 10 or so hours, maybe a bit more if I'm going after Culex. My most recent playthrough was more of a challenge run. I wanted to see what would happen if I didn't use Peach at all. She was never allowed in my party just because of how broken that healing is. It ended up being Mario, Bowser and Mallow this time around. A combination I've never done and it made the game far more interesting. Having to actually stock up on Status recovery items, Trueform Pins, etc... just to make sure that we could fight without the magic of Peach's healing was a real interesting way to play. And the reason for Bowser is cause I'm just a Bowser Fanboy. I make no attempts to hide that. He's the worst character stat wise for sure. But I mean... come on... He throws Mario as a weapon. That's just hilarious. Loved the video mate. Gave me endless waves on Nostalgia, and got the Forest Maze song stuck in my head. Again. It has permanent residence in there at this point. Truly a shame we never got more in this franchise... but at the same time... maybe oversaturating us with it would have been to it's detriment. We can only guess. Now If you will excuse me I need to go listen to it's OST again... Do do do do do, dooo do, do, doooooo
Awesome video, brought back memories of playing it around when it first came out. This game was my first RPG I've ever played and I was bad at it. Such as never upgrading equips because I thought it would change the character's looks so the battles became harder as I progressed through the game. I was also obsessed with it for probably a few years too and would draw the characters (or try to). Kind of wished I had time to play RPGs but unfortunately I cannot put a lot time into gaming nowadays. :/
Dude I feel you on that last comment. Having a full time job + UA-cam + personal projects makes it more difficult to play. Regardless I persist because I still love playing them. Thankfully as far as RPGs go, the Mario RPGs are fairly short, so it's easier to play them. I straight up marathoned Paper Mario 64 over the course of a week and a half.
Thanks man! I really wanted to do this one justice. Next up is Paper Mario 64, so I hope I can do a good job on it, especially considering I've found a new level of appreciation for it.
If you like the Mario RPG OST I'd highly reccomend taking a listen to my boy Dr. Robotnikland's remixes for this game. The mad lad remixed the WHOLE OST! 💎
This was a great video! I really like your style! The script reminds me a little too much of The Geek Critique’s video, but there’s still a lot of awesome new stuff!! Good job!
Huh, I actually recall trying my best to make the video feel a little different from his when I was making this, but eh. Too late now. Glad you liked the video at least!
@@DuoStuff i remember finding while watching illegally uploaded episodes of Case Closed and Star Fox Adventures lp's at my sister's house then showing it to my friend on his wii. Don't know if I got him into the game though
@@marek1shtar538 I actually also forced several of my friends to watch it, and they all seemed to like it a lot actually. I mean it's just a solid remix overall. (Though personally I prefer Waltz of the Forest.)
@@DuoStuff it's addicting. What makes it worse (or better) is watching other Newgrounds stuff with the RPG characters in it. Thats kinda how Geno became the breakout character
I was 7 when this game came out, but had a similar experience to you. All of my school notebooks were just absolutely littered with anything and everything about this game. My best friend was a Genesis guy, but listened to me babble on about it endlessly anyway. 26 years later, that hasn't really changed. I have about 50 notepad++ drafts open right now with development notes about hacking this game.
I'm an old man who grew up with this game. I play through it every few years because I love it that much. If you build Bowser right he is actually unkillable. My main team has always been Mario, Bowser, peach.
On the simplicity - bear in mind this was meant to be baby's first RPG. As an introduction to the genre as it was in 1996, it served that purpose beautifully. The game rewarded those who got the hang of its systems, but for the ones who never did, the difficulty was tuned so it was hard but still beatable. This game was actually fairly challenging for me when I first played it. Today I can time my button presses in my sleep. Back then, I got better with the battle system as I moved through the game, but I never mastered it on my first playthrough. I think that's the genius of its design - yes, it leaves you wanting something a bit beefier once you've nailed it down, but the amount of complexity it offers is entirely manageable if you aren't at all familiar with RPGs going into it. Since the game moves at such a snappy pace and it ends before it can overstay its welcome, a first-time player will likely complete their first playthrough without discovering all the subtleties and nuances of the tools they have available. I'd played through the game several times before I learned the timing on Geno Whirl. Hell, I never knew you could one shot the boss before the final area with it until I watched this video. And on the level ups - it's fair that you don't have much customization, but just because there are bonus stats available on one choice per level up it doesn't always make it the best option. There's really no point in taking extra magic stats for Bowser. His magic defense will always be lackluster and his specials are barely worth using. Likewise for Peach with her physical stats, especially if you put the Lazy Shell on her. Really, most of the customization comes down to the accessories and ridiculously overpowered equipment you can get in the late game. I'm okay with this considering that, again, it was meant to be an introduction to the genre for most of its players. However, as much as I prefer this game to the Paper Mario series, I think those games do a good job of offering some options without overloading the player with choice. All in all, I love this game to death, and it pleases me to no end people are still picking it up and giving it a go nearly 30 years on.
i was surprised that they didn’t cover to hidden Culix fight as one of the many cool little Easter eggs in the game! however, GREAT video overall, really made my eyes light up to see this game being talked about again :)
@@DuoStuff Yep, very good video as always. When I was like eight or nine I tried SMRPG but it wouldn't run on the emulator I was using. Years later I tried it again on Wii U, and kind of disliked it? Rawest Forest is always on my mind, and I've come to appreciate this game and enjoy it now. It's sad how the Mario RPGs have fallen so far. Paper Mario isn't itself, M&L is in limbo, SMRPG is forgotten. It's a shame. Thanks for coming to my TedTalks.
@@aketsuuu Man it really is sad how the state of the Mario RPGs has progressed. Even with me enjoying Origami King thus far, it still kinda stinks that they don't go the regular RPG route. And what happened with Mario & Luigi just makes me sad. It was such a fantastic series (besides Paper Jam which is just okay), and now we don't even know if we're ever getting another one ever again.
@@aketsuuu I'll certainly give them a chance, but it's going to be really difficult to capture the same energy and charm that Alphadream gave the franchise.
Fun fact: marios attack method was originally going to be a sword but it was changing to jump and hammer because the latter had louder applause. Edit:Also Punchinello’s original name was going to be James Bomb. So his first line was going to be “The name is Bomb James Bomb.”
Thanks for this video. I was born in 1996 and got to inherent my brothers snes. Out of all the games SMRPG was my favorite. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my brother play it. Before I was really old enough to play I was obsessed with it and my poor brother must have played it 50+ times because I'd always beg to 'play' (randomly push buttons on a second controller while he played). Sad you left out my man Culex tho but considering the amount of SMRPG retrospectives on here I'll take what I can get. 😂
A fun fact: Punchinello actually *isn't* a member of the Smithy Gang. He has no machine made clones in the Factory, and the music that plays when you fight him is just the regular boss music, not the Smithy Gang boss music. He's just some rando causing problems in the Moleville Mines.
I kind of wish he was a reject member, vowing revenge on the Gang and trying to be famous by saying he kidnapped the kids, or even by defeating Mario! A weird character with so much missed potential....
With Molevile I think you missed the part where the Star crashing into the mountain was what cause the cave in and the kids getting trapped. Also Punchinello wasn't in the Smithy Gang.
Yeah that's true, but what I meant was that the star element still felt lower priority there. Priority number one was still saving Dyna and Mite. Also yeah, I kinda just assumed Punchinello was a Smithy gang guy because he kinda looks like he should be.
@@DuoStuff i think the intention was he either wants to join them or got kicked out at some point. can;t even use the " they don't play the smithy gang boss theme" as alot of members near the end of the game like boomer, cloak and dagger, clockdown ,, etc don't have it either.
To my knowledge this is the Mario game that I think the main villain took a back row seat throughout most of the game. Heck you don't even meet the guy in person until the very end of the game. And even then you really don't fight his minions all that much. Usually you fight what I consider arc villains and a lot of these arc villains go through development. Sure you could say all the chaos caused by the gang encouraged an increase in crime which led to these other lesser bad guys to rise up but directly they have no connection to the main enemy group at all. Croco is a thief, Booster is just an insane loner who kidnaps princesses, Valentina is a usurper for power, Johnny is a pirate. The list goes on. None of these villains have any connection to the gang. Heck all the ones I just mentioned go through some sort of redemption arc. However there are others who aren't so lucky such as the bomb dude who gets flattened by his own explosive in a comedic way. I feel by World 7 the game realizes that not much was going on with the Smithy Gang itself and it's like "Oh right. The main bad guys. We need to stop them." and then the final 2 levels Bowser's Castle and The Weapons Factory become completely devoted to fighting the Smithy Gang.
Nice vid again Duo. You know you didn’t need to hide the fact that I am actually the best friend who is above the one you met from Mario RPG. I’m totally fine with you announcing to everyone that we are best friends lol. Great vid again dude, see you tomorrow!
@@DuoStuff Haha funny stuff Duo. Classic Duo making the "I'm not your bestest best friend joke lol" Anyways see you at baseball practice, Thursday man. And I'll be bringing my DS if you wanna battle.
I grew up with this game so hearing someone go on a Holy Grail type hunt to discover it definitely makes me feel like a grandpa. You didn't talk about my favorite bosses! The Axem Rangers!
A fantastic review to be sure. Though I have to say, I never understood why people like Geno so much. He has a cool design, sure, but he has no personality whatsoever. Mallow is probably my favorite thing about this whole game. He is a defined character with a memorable personality, an emotional resolution and some real character development, something that almost never happens in Mario RPG's. His development is straightforward and simple, but I think it works really well for a Mario game. Basically, Mallow is memorable to me in a way that Geno simply isn't.
I guess that's fair. Honestly though, I think it is partially the design and concept behind Geno that makes him stand out. There really aren't many characters designed like him, especially in the Mario series. I also kind of appreciate the no-nonsense serious thing he's got going on. It makes him feel cool in a way Mario characters usually aren't. But that's just me. I do like Mallow, and I appreciate that he's actually got an actual character arc, but said arc just doesn't do anything for me. I can't really explain it much more than that. Regardless, glad you enjoyed the video. =D
i think that i am literally the only person in the entire world who had this problem as a kid, but because i had played superstar saga and paper mario before this game, i didnt realize there was a run button because i was like "oh the other games didn't have one, i guess you cant run in this one either" (and i guess i didnt bother trying to press any of the other buttons???) once i got to booster's tower, there was one jump that required you to be running to make, so i just got stuck there for a few months. i kept trying to look up youtube videos to see what other people were doing, but they were all just somehow going faster than me and my Stupid Baby Brain never put the pieces together
I think smithy (and gang) being unremarkable characters is kind of the point. They are placed in contrast to booster, croco, Valentina and the rest of the cast (which are very colorful, lively, eccentric and distinct) to elevate them. They represent an alien threat to Mario’s world, intent on filling it with weapons and taking away their dreams. The factory level itself is presented as colorless, boring. Even its music is unremarkable. It’s basically the opposite of fun. Your mission as the player is to cast them out so that Mario’s world can continue to be the vibrant place it is
Not to say some smithy gang characters (like the Axem rangers) don’t have their charm P.S. I’m fairly sure punchinello isn’t part of the gang. IIRC his battle music is the one they use for non smithy bosses (i.e. croco)
Still love this game to this day. I played it as a kid when it first came out. Luckily my brother and I had the cartridge for the SNES :) Did you happen to try the hardest fight in the game? The secret one in Monstro Town?
I didn't end up doing it for this playthrough. I didn't want to head back through the castle again, and I honestly wanted to jump into PM64 as soon as possible.
@@Mesyrr Oh I did in the past. I just didn't do it for this recorded playthrough, and I felt like taking someone else's footage to talk about Culex would be weird.
I first played this game via emulator in my 20s and was an instant fan. It really sucks how Nintendo ignores it, I know they had a bad falling out with Square and Square owns the rights (iirc) but this was the first Mario RPG and it deserves more love than it gets from the company.
Well I hope you liked it. It's definitely a different style of content than what I usually do. (And probably the last retrospective I'll ever do on DuoStuff honestly.)
@@DuoStuff I'd give you a thumbs up for that comment but that makes me sad. 😂 But hey, if that's not what you're passionate about, then I'd personally rather you not do it then. So as long as you're genuinely In Love with any process you make or have, then that's all that matters..! 👩🎨
I do wish Square and Nintendo’s relationship warms up again soon so we may get a refreshing new entry or some sort of remaster. But as it is, it’s just another product of the past.
it's been 1 years since the video came out but i just watched it, i loved it! Great video! ps: is the retrospective of paper mario will come out someday or the project was abandonned?
You should really try out Mario RPG Armageddon. This is insane Mario RPG rom hack, The hack adds a bunch of Kingdom hearts, Pokemon, and final fantasy super bosses, enemies, dialogue, equipment, and challenges. It's a must play for any Mario RPG fan.
I wouldn't be against it necessarily, but honestly I've never used a rom hack, so the entire concept is somewhat scary to me. (I don't even really use emulators just to give you an idea of how weird I am.)
@@DuoStuff ah, that's understandable I guess. Takes about less than 5 minutes to set up total, but I can see the apprehension from the perspective of someone who doesn't really know what they're getting into.
I always consider Super Mario RPG kind of a Paper Mario 0 in a way. It was setting the foundation for future Paper Mario games which would focus more on strategy based aspects and puzzles as opposed to the more action oriented M&L games. Heck that seemed to be intentional as during it's beta development Paper Mario 64 was originally called Super Mario RPG 2.
I was 9 when this game came out. I knew about the Satanic panic and how people thought roleplaying games like DnD were a gateway into summoning demons, so I always joked Mario introduced me to Satan.
It's kinda cool to hear of people playing it way after its day and enjoying it, even those who weren't around at the time. I was aware of the game when it came out, but I didn't really get to play it until years later. I did a borrow trade for the game at some point well into the gamecube era, I gave them Star Fox (snes) to borrow and they gave me Super Mario RPG, they never returned my copy of Star Fox, so to this day I still have their copy of Super Mario RPG. Considering the price of the games now, with Super Mario RPG being the more expensive game to get a hold of, I think I walked away from that trade better off.
Man, I see you binged some of my content. Not that I mind. (Though I will say that it must've been a little jarring considering how different my 64 video was compared to, say, the Luigi's Mansion video.) And yeah, it was kinda rad to get to experience it way after its heyday. Made it feel like this special discovery to me, and I still adore the game to this day. Also, bro having an original copy is so cool. I'd really like to get my hands on one one day as well.
@@DuoStuff Ya, I guess I semi-binged, mostly just wanted background noise while EV farming/ Shiny hunting in pokemon. And that feeling of discovering something is part of what I love about retro gaming, even its well known, it could be something you missed out on at the time. I've gotten kinda hooked some of the Megaman/ Rockman games, if you haven't tried you might want to think about it as some worth while retro titles, the legacy collections on most platforms make them easy enough to access. I knew they existed as a kid but I just never had the chance to play them.
Fun fact, (I think) Most older Super Mario RPG fans believe that Peach and Bowser's stats were accidently swapped. Peach is the only character in the game who can max out her HP at 255.. Leaving a ridiculously broken Peach character and a fairly weak Bowser character.
Starting up the video, I instantly knew rawest forest was going to make an appearance. I got into mario rpg in a pretty similar way, although it was my friend who learned the song
@@DuoStuff Well was you said in the video, the game was pretty much lost to time. It makes sense that something like the original animation would be responsible for bringing it back. I wonder how many people were sent looking for more mario rpgs after bowser's inside story and found out SMRPG that way
I actually would also like to know the answer to this. I'd also like to know how many people first played it after seeing how many people wanted Geno in Super Smash Bros as well.
I understand the context you're trying to convey here but something DEFINITELY strikes me as funny about referring to the tail end of the RPG Golden Age as americans not understanding what the genre is yet
I mean the reality is that most people didn't "discover" said golden age until later, at least in the west. FF6, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, ect are all considered masterpieces now, but at the time they released, you'd have a tough time finding anyone who knew about them. Super Mario RPG sold around 200k in a couple months, which was *shocking* at the time, so that should put into perspective just how popular JRPGs were in the west.
Very close to my own story. That Newgrounds animation made me want to play it. So I bought an FC3+ that could play NES, SNES and Genesis games. When I finally found a Mario RPG cartridge I was so excited... And it didn't work. Turns out it used a special chip that made it one of the only SNES games the FC3+ couldn't run! (I did find some other SNES games at garage sales to play on it. So A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Mario All-Stars being part of my life were, in a way, all because I originally just wanted to try Mario RPG 😂 Later in my college days I was so excited when it was released on the Wii. Very much enjoyed it, especially since it was almost a mythical game in my imagination at that point.
@@DuoStuff Seems right up my alley. I did the same thing with the og Paper Mario years back but actually beat it my 8th grade year. Maybe I should just play a mario rpg every school year. I am in 9th rn.
admit I remember when this game came out.... . . . . . These graphics, for their time, were top of the line. It was astounding. Everything was so.. futuristic and 3d and wow. Nothing looked this good. There were drawings and manuals and woaaahhh.... compare to Final Fantasy 3/6 and Mario World. and realize that 3d pre-rendered graphics were so popular back then that Sonic the Hedgehog specifically had that look Fighting games not so much.. Ninja Turtles or Streets of Rage 2 (beatemups) were less repetitive than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.. which most people played because they thought there was a nudality code.
You definitely should if you have a Wii U. (Fun fact: that's how I recorded this playthrough.) I think it's about $8 on there, and it's well worth that price. (Well for me at least.)
Check out Super Mario RPG: Armageddon, it is this game but for adults with its own story and level design. Also, the game is HUGE in the romhack community.

I love that video. It's such a gem. And I'm gonna rewatch it again after this.
that song brought me back man! watched your other vids and wow we have the same nostalgia, super cool to hear someone talk about similar middle school memories lol. you've earned a sub and i hope to see more from you!!
Sweet! I should note that I'm currently on break from UA-cam while I finish up the writing for the DDLC mod I'm working on. (I'm actually pretty close to being done to be fair. So close that I've already began editing the videos I'm returning with.)
It'll still be a bit, but I hope you can wait a little longer!
A Mario RPG retrospective with no mention of the hardest (and optional) boss Culex????
So glad you're back. Missed you.
Thanks man! Hope you enjoy the video. =D
Yeah... no
This is a game I just adore.
Hopefully Nintendo Adds This Game To Switch Online, So I Can Finaly Play This Game!
I really don't get why they haven't honestly. Same with Earthbound. Obviously I have them on my Wii U, but I want more people to be able to play them.
Emulate it for free
@@DuoStuff Earthbound has been added, but Super Mario RPG will be more difficult since Square-Enix owns all of the original characters for the game.
we got better :)
Game Over. Wonderful episode! Can't wait for the next.
Thanks man! I really wanted to do this one justice.
Next up is Paper Mario 64, so I hope I can do a good job on it, especially considering I've found a new level of appreciation for it.
Me: wondering why duo hasn't uploaded since last year.
Me seeing the video length: ooooooooooooooohhhh
Well to be fair, technically I did take a month and a half off, which ended in early February. That being said, yeah it was a huge video.
@@DuoStuff wait was worth it tho. Its was great
UA-cam notifications please work... Either way, it's great to see a video from you on this game, missed your content! Keep up the great work
Well I'm glad you enjoyed it! Content should be consistent from here on. (Though consistent doesn't mean frequent. Trying for monthly.)
Yay, the legend is back! And with a great new video too
Glad you enjoyed the video dude. =D
If you like the Mario RPG OST I'd highly reccomend taking a listen to my boy Dr. Robotnikland's remixes for this game.
The mad lad remixed the WHOLE OST! 💎
I've watched a lot of retrospectives and this one is top notch. Nicely done.
Ah yes. Rawest Forest the thing got many peeps into Mario RPG and also gave me an addiction to saying the word peeps
I still think it's funny that there are others who got into SMRPG because of it, not just me.
I didn't know that actually. Interesting.
I was 8 years old when this came out. I beqt it 3 times in a row. Its so much better than any if the paper games
FINALLY HE'S BACK!
I have indeed returned, and with a pretty big video to boot.
@@DuoStuff Well I appreciate your reply and it is more than worth the wait for this mega video
wtf? The homie Mark?
@@_mango_ Mango Arts?
@@The_Markimator lmao yeah
Really great story, man. I’m old, so I played it at launch lmao
Yeah, I didn't get around to it sadly. I figured I'd at least put the music in though.
And regardless, I'm glad you enjoyed it! =D
Great retrospective. Time to binge your content.
Having notifications on is a blessing.
Well I'm glad to hear that. I hope the video ends up being enjoyable. =D
@@DuoStuff I assume we'll get another, but Nintendo themselves just can't match the magic of Alpha Dream I'd say.
@@aketsuuu I'll certainly give them a chance, but it's going to be really difficult to capture the same energy and charm that Alphadream gave the franchise.
Super Mario RPG was the first ever Mario RPG style game I've ever played. It is still my favorite Mario game of all time.
Fun fact: marios attack method was originally going to be a sword but it was changing to jump and hammer because the latter had louder applause.
Edit:Also Punchinello’s original name was going to be James Bomb. So his first line was going to be “The name is Bomb James Bomb.”
Huh interesting. Makes sense though since Mario had already used a hammer previously anyways.
Well I think you're going to enjoy what's releasing tomorrow then.
@@DuoStuff i think the intention was he either wants to join them or got kicked out at some point.
can;t even use the " they don't play the smithy gang boss theme" as alot of members near the end of the game like boomer, cloak and dagger, clockdown ,, etc don't have it either.
heck yeah dude this turned out really great
Glad to hear that dude! Worked really hard on this one, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. =D
@@DuoStuff not lying when i say this, but this whole video changed my opinion on super mario rpg (for the better)
Wow that's actually really cool. I'm glad the video did something for you. Something about that just makes me really happy.
Lol. Glad you enjoyed the video, though I'm sorry to say that this friend is probably my best "best friend." XD
It NEEDS to be added on the SNES online switch service.
I really don't understand why it hasn't already been added. It's kinda frustrating honestly.
and we got a remake!
i think that i am literally the only person in the entire world who had this problem as a kid, but because i had played superstar saga and paper mario before this game, i didnt realize there was a run button because i was like "oh the other games didn't have one, i guess you cant run in this one either" (and i guess i didnt bother trying to press any of the other buttons???) once i got to booster's tower, there was one jump that required you to be running to make, so i just got stuck there for a few months. i kept trying to look up youtube videos to see what other people were doing, but they were all just somehow going faster than me and my Stupid Baby Brain never put the pieces together
So crazy that until you mentioned it that i didnt realize that I dont remember any of Toadstools dialogue
Your mission as the player is to cast them out so that Mario’s world can continue to be the vibrant place it is
Not to say some smithy gang characters (like the Axem rangers) don’t have their charm
P.S. I’m fairly sure punchinello isn’t part of the gang. IIRC his battle music is the one they use for non smithy bosses (i.e. croco)
Still love this game to this day. I played it as a kid when it first came out. Luckily my brother and I had the cartridge for the SNES :)
Did you happen to try the hardest fight in the game? The secret one in Monstro Town?
I didn't end up doing it for this playthrough. I didn't want to head back through the castle again, and I honestly wanted to jump into PM64 as soon as possible.

Hey man! Did you hear about the new death note manga? I forgot what it was called but ot was made in 2020?
Damn you are making me feel old 😢 i played it on release. one of my all time favorite snes games
One of my favourite games of all time.
This video makes me feel so fucking old lol especially the part where you talked about the game being out before you were born XD
I first played this game via emulator in my 20s and was an instant fan. It really sucks how Nintendo ignores it, I know they had a bad falling out with Square and Square owns the rights (iirc) but this was the first Mario RPG and it deserves more love than it gets from the company.
I thought I've seen all your videos, but apparently I missed this one..!
Time for another hour of Duo..! 😌
Well I hope you liked it. It's definitely a different style of content than what I usually do. (And probably the last retrospective I'll ever do on DuoStuff honestly.)

I'd give you a thumbs up for that comment but that makes me sad. 😂
But hey, if that's not what you're passionate about, then I'd personally rather you not do it then.
So as long as you're genuinely In Love with any process you make or have, then that's all that matters..! 👩🎨
Well that is the most important thing. I gave retrospectives a whack, but I just tend to enjoy shorter, more focused videos I guess.
They need to make modern sequel to this classic. Great video BTW.
Well... Let's just say, tomorrow you'll be getting an answer to that question... ;)
The ending of this video hkts differently now, I imagine, considering the remake was announced
It’s finally here! 👏👏
It definitely took a while. Hopefully it turned out decent enough to be worth the wait. =D
Thank goodness we were all proven wrong 2 weeks ago. Super Mario RPG remake coming this November!
43 minutes??? Good upload
Yeah, figured might as well return with something big, y'know?
This is my favorite game of all time i love it
I was 9 when this game came out.
(Though I will say that it must've been a little jarring considering how different my 64 video was compared to, say, the Luigi's Mansion video.)
And yeah, it was kinda rad to get to experience it way after its heyday.
Oh Hey He's Alive! Good Video Mate
Thanks. Hope you end up enjoying it! =D
im surprised u didnt talk about the culex fight
Smithy. The factory fiend. I love industry things and all things mechanical ESPECIALLY when it's evil.
Same actually. It's up there with some of my favorite area themes, with spooky/creepy levels being my absolute favorite.
Fun fact, (I think) Most older Super Mario RPG fans believe that Peach and Bowser's stats were accidently swapped. Peach is the only character in the game who can max out her HP at 255.. Leaving a ridiculously broken Peach character and a fairly weak Bowser character.
the goal of any rpg isn’t to take as little damage as possible. it’s to gain experience to get levels so you can fight tougher opponents
I mean, it still is tho. Like, if you take too much damage, you don't gain experience. Ergo, it's about taking as little damage as possible too.
Starting up the video, I instantly knew rawest forest was going to make an appearance. I got into mario rpg in a pretty similar way, although it was my friend who learned the song
It's still really funny that Rawest Forest was responsible for a weirdly large group of people playing this game for the first time. XD
Missed ya man.
Well thank you. Now that my break is over (and the real life issues mostly dealt with), uploads should be more consistent. =D
@@DuoStuff Nice.
So A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Mario All-Stars being part of my life were, in a way, all because I originally just wanted to try Mario RPG 😂
Later in my college days I was so excited when it was released on the Wii.

There were drawings and manuals and woaaahhh.... compare to Final Fantasy 3/6 and Mario World. and realize that 3d pre-rendered graphics were so popular back then that Sonic the Hedgehog specifically had that look
Fighting games not so much.. Ninja Turtles or Streets of Rage 2 (beatemups) were less repetitive than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.. which most people played because they thought there was a nudality code.
I don't know why but I always thought the visuals of that game look like claymation
I've always wanted to try this one. I show pick it up on the wii u virtual console
