This is the Old Princes Highway level crossing at Monarto South, it is located between Murray Bridge and Adelaide, in South Australia. This was the original route of the road which was later replaced by the current section of freeway located slightly further to the south.
Both signals had McKenzie & Holland bases and Westinghouse LED lights which were mounted on newer style Mckenzie & Holland cross-arms. In what seems to have been common practice in SA, the front facing lights had clear LED's while the rear facing lights had standard red LED's, the reason for this is unknown. The northern signal also had a Safetran type 3 electronic bell.
During May 2024, these old signals were replaced with brand new gate-less signals. The new signals comprise of Western Cullen Hayes bases, new style Westinghouse LED lights and a new Siemens electronic bell. I have no intention of filming the new signals.
The train seen in the video is 2PM5 freight from Perth to Melbourne, with locomotives NR44 and NR39.
    Filmed on June 9, 2022.

Great video and nice crossing! I wouldn't be too surprised if the Clear LEDs on the front lights is to reduce sun phantoming that can be an issue with tinted LEDs. Shame those old (though modernized) signals are gone now.

Rip to the old signals :(, I wish I got to film it but with 2 seperate trips I failed, and it was upgraded before I could film it on the 3rd.
Great video by the way! Good that you got good coverage!

Nice vid. This replacement was quite unfortunate as I believe it was the last one with white poles on the SA part of this line. When I filmed this crossing, they replaced a chevron next to the big "crossing" sign because it was a chevron actually meant for the other side of the road, so it was incorrect.

Reminds me of a Vic crossing

Drive it most days. Crossing at Monarto South (Viterra) bit more interesting about 1km away.

I’ve frankly got no idea why they replaced the old signals. It would be pointless if the crossing were to be upgraded with gates later on.

Agreed, if they wanted to replace the signals here they should have installed gates, have to wonder if it was for some ridiculous reason like using up the budget before the end of the financial year. Considering the fatal accident near Broken Hill on New Year's Eve, upgrades like this are just wasteful and do nothing to improve safety.

@@McKHAust 100% right there, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The equipment used on the new signals could have easily been used elsewhere where it’s needed, not replacing gateless signals which pretty much had the same equipment. Also, could you fill me in on what happened in Broken Hill? This is the first time I’m hearing of this fatality.

@@TrickyMario7654 it's the accident where a truck collided with the train which caused it to derail, sadly killing both of the train crew. The crossing has gate-less signals despite being on a major highway.

@@McKHAust I just read about it online. Damn, the accident looks really bad. I bet they’re almost certainly going to install gates there now, with good reason too, seeing as it’s on a major highway and a main line too. BTW, I’d love to see you film some crossings on the Broken Hill line in the future.

@@TrickyMario7654 yes sadly that's the case with many crossings, they don't get upgraded with gates until a fatality occurs, yet they can find the money to waste on other ridiculous things. Doubt I will be filming any crossings in that area, I simply don't have the time and it's getting very expensive to go on road trips, would rather use my time and money for other things.
