When I was a teenager (in the 80s) and all my friends were listening to Rush, I never really liked or appreciated it. Now, I appreciate their greatness and I realize how far ahead of their time they were. Great musicians and unbelievable song writers. Nothing else (at that time) sounded like this. They blazed their own trail. The complicated time signatures, the multiple-transitions, super technical playing, thought-provoking lyrics...true masters and one of the Godfathers of Progressive music.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned in the comments: for Tidepools to get the "natural" atmospheric effect, Alex and Neil pushed oars through the water of the lake near the recording studio to get the small wave effect and they recorded the song outdoors. Source: Permanent Waves tourbook essay written by Neil.
This song was a replacement for their attempt at adapting the epic poem "Sir Gawain And The Green Knight" into a song. I'm glad they made this choice.

Hey Jamel, I'm 57 and have listened to Rush since I was about 14, heard most of their albums and also owned most of them, seen them in concert 7 or 8 times in Kansas City Missouri. This is probably one of my favorite songs. I truly enjoyed your reactions to the song, thanks again.
Also, try checking out Middletown Dreams from the Power Windows album, really good tune!

Just so you know. The drummer, who happens to be legendary, also wrote most of the lyrics to most of their music, if not all. Dependent on the era of the bands formation. Neal created some of the most technically complex drum parts of any band on the face of the planet. As a drummer, and speaking for others of my ilk, he is the gold standard for becoming technically proficient in your playing. I have studied his methods for over thirty years and still cant play everything he did. I have a suspicion he had a hidden arm only he could see haha.

5:10, that look... ;0 "you got MASTAHED!!" ;0 didn't you?? ;) p.s. out of all their tracks, this might be my one end-all favorite of theirs... so fast on the hi-hat (probably the fastest "by-hand" track ever! sure sounds like it)... so atmospheric; outdoors and "inner-space" sounding; so complex and 'outer-space' in composition, like cygnus/hemispheres... yet a compact ten-or-so mins... COSMIC WAVES!

I’m so glad you’re loving these Rush songs! You should do Marathon from the Power Windows album and then do a double feature of Cygnus X1 Book 1 from the Farewell to Kings album and Cygnus X1 Book 2 (Hemispheres) from the Hemispheres album. Yes, that last request is another long one, but it’s amazing, and the pinnacle of Rush’s straight up Prog rock era. Cheers!

Keep on keeping on Jamel. Loving your reactions. They used to tell me l was exaggerating the greatness of this band in the 80's and I feel you getting it now as I did then. I am so pleased to see you sensing all these years later ,that which I felt all those years ago. Time Stand Still. Greatness is timeless, and timeless are RUSH! Thank you BROTHER. God Bless You and Yours. Keep up the great work.

Watching your reaction brought a huge smile to my face. I flashed back to my first time hearing this at 12 years old. The deep almost philosophical lyrics about the need mankind to find a balance in an increasingly technological world. Much the same as man had to learn to find balance in the natural world. Hence "Natural Science". The time changes are insane and the complexity of the music intertwined with these profound lyrics of mankind's need for balance between the physical and the metaphysical.

I’ve been sooo blessed to have grown up with them; they’ve been a source of inspiration through good and bad, and have helped strengthen my belief in Hope & Love above all things.
God bless you brother for discovering their music, and for being moved by greatness.

Matt King If there’s was a first time listener looking for requests, I would probably start them off with the whole Moving Pictures album, and then go into, 2112, Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, A Farewell To Kings, etc. I agree, you always have to “dive right in” with Rush, because they have so many different albums that span many different genres.

I won't ever where a Concert Tour t-shirt if I didn't see it. Being a Poet, I love Neil's lyrics and the presentation and musicality are on point!

Hey Jamal! Jamel! I've been watching a few of your vids because UA-cam found out i'm an avid RUSH fan. This particular song takes me back to the beaches of Maine (I'm from Canada, eh?) and is definitely in my top-5 of RUSH (maybe top-1) from my very favorite album Permanent Waves. You seem to like transitions and sections, and I see that you've reacted to a few prog rock songs. Let me guide you further onto this particular path: just for starters, if you like these "sectioned" songs, and don't mind breaking the 15-minute barrier, there are a couple I'd like to introduce to you. One is a MEGA classic in the genre (perhaps THE prog classic), from a much celebrated band, the other is from a less well-known band, but just as epic in its own way. May i present: Genesis - "Supper's Ready", and from IQ, "Harvest of Souls". Please enjoy responsibly!! ;^P

All I can say is "I know, right?" I saw these guys in concert for many tours, then all of a sudden they started playing Natural Science. Eyes wide, I looked around me. "Natural Science!" I yelled, to no one, as goosebumps covered me from head to toe. You think these songs are amazing? Me, too. But they are an Experience, live. Nearly transcendent .

I’ve never seen one of your episodes before, but I loved seeing someone experience Rush the same way I did when that album was released. I’m a 51 y.o. white male and have been a Rush fan most of my life. It gives me great enjoyment to see you enjoy this. Sometimes, sadly, I think there is more racism now than when I was a teen in the 80s. You restored some hope by your honest and objective view of a Canadian trio. If everyone could feel the way I’m feeling right now, the scourge racism would go away-fast. It reminds me of when The Rolling Stones came to Chicago in 1965 to see the great blues musicians of the time. Why can’t we all enjoy each other’s cultures and well-meant desire to move forward as members of one human race? Been fighting racism all my life and your honest reactions were beautiful because the music is beautiful. Please keep doing these!!!!
