The concert opens with a medley without vocals for nearly ten minutes, one song selected from each of the first seven records and the crowd completely enthralled the entire time. Who does that? Rush. Who can get away with it with the fans begging for more? Rush. The transitions were sick! The playing stellar. The band having fun. The fans having fun. That’s what it’s all about.
That was a great reaction. Everything I was hoping for when I requested it. Thank you!!!
Jerry Stiller filmed an intro for them, and in it he says “nah, they never play Bangkok”. Then he pops up on the screen again when they start playing that in the medley. 😂 His intro bit is somewhere here on UA-cam, you oughta check it out. 👍🏻
then they go on to play the whole song next tour, with geddy on a rickenbacker no less! i think it was the first time in like 20 or so years he had played one live
After your intro I figured as a Rush fan you would name each tune within seconds, and you didn't disappoint!
Well to be fair...the songs they pulled out for the medley weren't obscure. It's not like they pulled out "Lakeside Park" or "Kid Gloves".
U cant go wrong with Rush, amazing how talented they are… Rest in peace Neil Peart ❤️
This is my first time hearing rush and they are great
I've listened to this intro lots of times, its so cool to see them open a show this way. I wish I could have seen it in person. Legendary RIP Neil Peart
Another fun reaction. Rush was always almost perfect, always put on a great show. Saw almost every tour from Presto on. Glad they were able to finish the way they did. Miss them though. RIP Neil Peart
There isn't a moment of this whole thing that isn't just stupid-grin fun. But my favorite part is during Spirit of Radio when Alex and Geddy are talking and laughing together center stage clearly having the absolute time of their lives.
Brad Poynter, a huge Rush fan who has a channel on here has a theory as to why they did this medley. He thinks they did it this way because Geddy would have a really hard time singing most of these songs and by doing it this way he avoids having to do that and also gives the audience what they want.
I saw Rush back in the early 90s on their Roll The Bones tour when Primus opened for them. Best live performance I have experienced.
That was excellent. Well done David, have to give you a RUSH Red Star. Hold it proudly high in hand. I saw them do Hemispheres live on the original tour for that album, and Cygnus X-1 Book I on the previous tour for A Farewell To Kings.
in the end, Rush (especially live) is about enjoying the music.
that is what makes them a great band.
The medley went in order of their albums, Finding My Way from their 1st album, Anthem from the 2nd and so on...
Well done, you nailed it, greatest intro from the best band ever.
Awesome catch...I knew most of them but missed Anthem and the Books. I knew the songs...I swore I heard The Trees in there but maybe not. Great video for you though, you nailed it better than I did
Thanks, but as I replay this...I also hear La Villa Strangiato, it's toward the end, but I think I hear the drum part
Great review, and I agree, Hemispheres au complet! More Rush please.
this is R30... they were celebrating... and it is Rush after all, so the can do whatever they want.
I had never noticed that the medley was done chronologically. Love these guys so much. Missing Neil!!
Also, they do "A Passage To Bangkok" in its entirety on the Snakes & Arrows Live DVD (I'm sure available on UA-cam) and Geddy uses his Ric.
Great reaction sir.. RUSH=LEGENDS!!
There was a video preceding the opening where there was a montage of various Rush-cover-related images. Jerry Stiller was asleep and woke up and thought it was some weird dream and was wondering if he had missed the band yet and if they would play "Bangkok". Then he though "eh, they never play Bangkok!" Hence the videos of him popping up when they started Passage to Bangkok.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh that's why he was so excited. He's not wrong though, they hardly ever played Bangkok live.
2 days ago, I was thinking of how cool it would be for you to react to this. Amazing
I saw Rush last 4 UK tours,30th anniversary being the 1st. They opened with the same intro as this and Spirit of the radio, which worried me abit as I was still learning the back catalogue back then. However everything after that blew me away for the next 3 hours. God how we miss Neil 😢
You acted as if you were surprised by their talent and genius in being able to put this together beautifully. As if we'd get anything other than greatness from Rush.
Who's acting??? I was genuinely surprised at how well the medley was constructed, just like I said in the video.
@@THEDavidHeretic Lol I just meant to express the sentiment of "did you expect anything other than greatness" I didn't actually think you were acting. I really liked your reaction to it, it was fun and upbeat. I'm looking forward to the next video. Live well my friend.
@@Levi_Amongst_the_Watchers FEELIN' YOU Levi!!!
It was only the R30 tour. It's officially called the R30 Overture
Great reaction, I can tell right away that you are a big Rush fan and as am I. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Where’s my Thing (Here it is). It is an incredible live performance.
In that tour they used the South Park intro for Tom Sawyer, it's very funny how Cartman gives the entrance
Nice job! Would be interesting to find out what is the longest medley they ever played. They weren’t young at this stage. And it was Jerry Stiller! 😅
Fun fact: Neal Peart is your favorite drummers, favorite drummer.
Besides an amazing opening statement from the band, from a drummers point of view I really love the sound of Neil's snare during this tour. Very deep and fat. It really is refreshing to watch a video reaction from another musician and from someone who understands the musical aspect of what is going on. Keep rocking and love the reaction. Just keeping it real. I saw them 102 times and every time was just amazing.
Always first class.
Rush- best three man band, EVER
I've seen Rash a few times. Twice in Chicago and once in Quebec City. They're my dad's favorite band. He made me listen to them on the many trips to northern Wisconsin amongst many classic rock bands.
The eternal debate of who the better drummer is; Neil Peart or Buddy Rich, still rages in my mind. Some days it's buddy and some days it's Neil.
I saw the hemispheres tour in 1979 they played Cygnus X-1 and Book II Hemispheres consecutively never played again in its entirety. Amazing in the analog age the stage set up was crazy especially Geddy's keyboards. Hemispheres was almost too hard for Rush! and my favorite Rush Album their most creative IMHO
They usually played a intro including all the songs that that are expected at a concert but wont be played and it changed every tour
they also always played them chronilogically
Rush has the best intros and best intermissions!! Jerry Stiller is a huge Rush fan... Oh question to commenters?? Doesn't Neil wake up in bed with him at end of this show?? Was that tour, I can't remember.
Also, Roll the Bones on the last two tours have been thoroughly entertaining. A bunch of celebrity cameos from Las Claypool to Peter Dinklage do the rap portion of the song. It's awesome.
Snakes and Arrows is the tour you are thinking of.
A Passage to Bangkok - Live in Rotterdam, is an excellent treat. 🧨
It was called The Best Intro Ever, not the Best Medley Ever, right? My score. 10 Loved your reaction, though. Thanks!!
Good job. Very knowledgeable….
Dave, Rush is my favorite band. This intro was a song from each of their first six albums leading up to The Spirit of Radio (7th album). Last don't short BABYMETAL until you get much deeper into their discography as I think they are going to surprise you, this from a die hard Metal and Hard Rock fan. Peace

Already in the que, added your name to the requesters.
i wish i could have seen them live
After 4 songs in the intro, I'm guessing a score over 9. *drum roll* And the score is HAHAHA! I'm getting a good feel for your scale.
Rush does nothing half assed. Of course it's perfect.
They did some work with Jerry Stiller back in the day. Google Rush and Jerry Stiller.
I RUSHed to this reaction and dissembling of RUSH. But I have to disagree with the title of that video you watched. Dave Heretic has the best intro ever! :D
LOL...naaaaaah nothing I can on the channel do tops that medley. Thank you forcthe kind words though, made me smile.
rush between the wheels
they picked a song from each of their first 7 albums, and songs that weren't on the setlist for that night.
Love Ya Dude!!! I'm a Former Rock Singer from the 80-90s, WHAT were the 8 Songs in Your Medley??? BTW, I Also Loved the 2 Cygnus songs together!!!
Oh GAWD it was a long time ago.....I know we started and finished with Spirit of Radio, I remember Red Barchetta was in there, Roll The Bones, Test For Echo, Freewill, In The Mood....I don't remember the other 2 though.
Talking about intros... I know that you have reacted to Lovebites "Hammer of Wrath", but you actually missed the INTRO that it has, when they come back from encore... Check this out (don't need to react, it's just 2min intro to the song you already reacted, called "awakening")... awesome intro for their comeback, which starts hammer of wrath. it is so good, I wish they would of made actual full song of it....: ua-cam.com/video/otJZPUCwyOM/v-deo.html
Kudos to you, dude, for properly (and quickly!) identifying all the sections of the medley! 👍 But I feel compelled to point out that the fact that the medley sections and the actual opening song of the concert are all in chronological order of release is something, my friend, that you didn't notice, or at least didn't remark upon (understandable; there was a lot goin' on). 😉😊
I, therefore, with all due respect, maintain that your assigned score shoulda probably been higher! By your own logical reasoning, fitting all the sections smoothly together would be almost infinitely tougher when the source music for each immovable slot had to be from one specific album, rather than the entire catalogue. 🤔😋 No? (I'm such a dick. 😒🤭😂)
Also, just by unfortunate circumstance, I s'pose, you didn't know that the full title of this video is usually Best Intro Ever - The Spirit of Radio. The particular video you accessed obviously had that title clipped. 😏 Sorry that ended up disappointing you!
Awesome music, awesome musicians, awesome reaction! 🤗
As Eddie Trunk said Rush went out the way all bands should retire. Greatest trio ever IMO.
Yeah, Gold Tier comes through with a gem! Bless your gold-clad hearts...
I hear the struggle. Didn't want the medley to end. Riff after riff sucking you in. A medley from a band of this caliber is like watching a Michael Jordan or a LeBron James highlight reel, I never want it to end. And Rush is one of the few bands with enough content to do it. Maybe a two-hour medley. Am I overstating? By much?
I would imagine vocals for these early tunes would be a wee bit too high for Ged to hit....
9.2 ,,, How Dare You !!!
I know right? How dare I.
Seriously, could not do a 9.3? I think you get my point.
When are you going to do Dream Theater. In my opinion very high on the list for Prog Rock. I guess Berklee College of Music and The Juilliard School might be hint that the Dream Theater musicians are a step above. Up to you which song, They rock. Rush, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes...very few bands have the talent to create this type of complicated music. Time signatures, syncopation that is in outer space, that makes even composers scratch their heads when trying to follow the song without the chart in front of the. Come on man, please do Dream Theater.
I wish I could, but Iit would be very tricky to do an honest reaction to Dream Theater because I was a huge DT fan for years. I've heard everything from them up through Octavarium, so I wouldn't be able to do anything from Images And Words through Octavarium. If there's anything after that time period, then it can be requested and I can add it to the que.
Neal is of course a legend, but I don't think Geddy and Alex got enough credit. Personally I think Rush should be in the same class as Led Zeppelin, but maybe that's just me. Your enjoyment showed through and as you say, if you enjoy it the audience (us) will enjoy it too. Nuff said.
U missed it Jerry starts the show
