Caboose & Complete Train Is Turned On The Wye!! This Is What Happens! CSX Local Train With Caboose

  • Have you ever seen a complete train turn around? What about a train with a caboose? Watch how this CSX local switching train turns around as seen from 3 different angles. This train is in Covington, Kentucky and a huge auto racks train shows up. The CSX auto racks train came off the old L&N line to Corbin, Kentucky and was going around the wye to get to Louisville, Kentucky on the old L&N LCL Sub. The CSX local with the caboose had to wait for the CSX auto racks train before they could continue on to switch a customer. They followed the auto racks train with the caboose leading and being used as a shove platform. This video shows what happens. It shows a Google Earth map and I explain the route that the train takes so that it completely turns around. They needed to turn the train around in order to switch a customer that had a facing switch. I hope I explained it properly so that everyone can understand the move. The whole process took about 53 minutes. Waiting on the auto rack train to pass took most of the time. The entire wye is owned by CSX and they have 3 different lines that converge in this one area. The best frequencies to use here are 161.370 and 160.230 for the trains to call out the signals and the defect detectors. I also recommend 160.32. and 452.9375 if you want more information such as listening to the dispatcher and the EOT device. Thanks for watching! Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

When I was a child, I always loved the caboose at the end of the train. Once the train was over and I watched the caboose go by, I would wave at it and say bye caboose. Lol.

No whistle zone. I guess that works if the crossing gates are efficient and operable. In the ancient world of railroading, I rode on that type of caboose, i.e., Southern Pacific. Great for a place in the woods: 2 bunks with storage inside said bunks, reversible bench type seats, desk, oil burning stove, terlit, and 'decks' at either end for enjoying a brew and the view. Not insulated so cold in the winter, even though there is the stove. Now if you're a hunter, a caboose with cupola like the old Sante Fe makes for a great 'deer stand'.

A rather complicated video. I’m glad it was you who explained it; anyone else might surely have made a pig’s breakfast of it. Your explanation was clear and concise, the result being that my interest kept pace with the video. One thing that especially caught my interest was the use of the caboose. They have become a definite rarity these days. By the way, I think you missed your calling; you would have made a great teacher. Just don’t use explosives as a pointer.

That first shot with the CSX train pulling the freight cars and the caboose was outstanding. I caught the numbers on most of the cars, because the numbers express the character of each railcar. I like to watch the whole train, even though I cannot be near the railroad site. Thank you for another great video catch.

They use cabooses on trains that are backing up a lot as a rolling platform for the crew to safely flag the crossing. They sometimes use them as a buffer between the engine and a hazardous tank car being moved during switching.

Great to see a GP30 on lead. With all the signal issues at grade crossings, gates going up and down and lights going off and on while train is in the crossing, use of the caboose is prudent. At 9:16 the lights stop working and come back on at 9:27. They go out again at 9:51 and back on at 9:59 as the Caboose came through. You then pan to the left and those lights were on. When the Auto-Racks came through, the lights on left stop at 10:58 and on at 11:05. 11:35 the lights on right go out and 11:37 ALL LIGHTS OUT. 11:41 all lights back on. Then as the Caboose comes into intersection at 12:31 the left light stops and the right side out at 12:57. NO LIGHTS!! Left on at 13:10 and the right on at 13:13. I've never seen lights do that before. Not even sure how to contact someone to get it fixed either.

One of the really cool things is the lead "engine" CSX 2270 was a GP-30. CSX 2270 is now a "slug" or "calf." No engine or radiators or radiator fans, but the chassis has additional weight added. It does have its traction motors that draw electricity from the "cow" GP-40 CSX 6463. The venerable GP-30 had styling influence from the GM design teams lead by Harley Earl. Earl may not have designed the GP-30 but you can see his influence. The GP-30's were only built from July 1961 to November 1963 so at a minimum, the chassis is nearly 60 years old. Harley Earl is the father of the Corvette design and styling.

Many neat things in the 🎥 the GP 30 slug the decent looking caboose the kinked grade Xing where the trains pass resulting in 4 warning lights the auto racks snaking over one track then curving away and the former UP MOW coal hopper which then hauled junk ties and now carries scrap metal for DJ Joseph. Oh yes switching locomotives are often referred to as yard goats and some are even the same color as CCET. The one you caught snacking and then bolting was hilarious. Gotta love em

Hi Jaw Tooth. Great video. My wife and I were in Kentucky a couple days ago. We visited the Ark Encounter in Dry Ridge Ky.
    Really enjoyed seeing it.
When we left we came up 75 across the Ohio. I saw an I&O train on a trestle above the highway and some CSX trains from afar.
We stopped for dinner at an Olive Garden in Cincinnati. I don’t remember the exact area it was in JB it it was just off I-75.
    Have a great day!!

Your video was aces except in my opinion others may not agree with, you cut the auto train. Know you warned us. In particular the auto train going through two turnouts would not have been boring. Particularly the end. I think your the best for videos because you get it about watching the whole train and recording it smoothly. You don’t just do the engines and then cut to the next train. Strictly my opinion. I forward a lot of your videos and will continue. Loved the mapping too. Not being a “jumpin jack flash” is your strong point. God bless buddy. 😉

Good Job on commentary!! Many times, looking at the arial view, not sure what I am looking at, keep adding your commentary, makes video MUCH better and interesting!! Perhaps, if you can, add a little history on where you are at. When were the "heyday" of these areas/crossings/towns??? Thanks, and again, keep up good work!!

You are correct, Bobby Mackeys roadhouse is haunted. I spent the night there and witnessed extremely strange events. But no ghost images. Good CSX video J.with the rare caboose.

I've seen a train do a complete turnaround in a wye. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge in SW Colorado does this after arrival in Silverton. After it arrives in Silverton and lets everyone off at their "depot" (which is moreso just a section of street), it reverses into a wye (caboose and all), then reverses back into the loading area and it's facing the direction for the return trip to Durango.
The train also does a complete turn around in a wye with people on board during their Polar Express train in November and December. It can't go quite as far as Silverton at that time of year so it goes a few miles north of Durango, does a reverse through a wye, while passengers are distracted with a huge display of lights and Santa's village (aka North Pole), then forward in the other direction back to Durango.

Nice video, Jawsy. Here in the UK we call the caboose a brake van and they are much smaller than yours. I miss seeing them now as all freight is in blocktrains with good brakes. The wye is a triangle over here but I think it's only used occasionally for turning steam specials to get the loco at the right end facing back the way it came. I watch all your films, usually last thing at night and think they are very good. Love the dogs too ! Ted, Manchester UK.
