  • Let's dive into the Erik Larsen/David Michelinie Spider-Man omnibus! Whether you love '90s comics or hate them, it's hard not to have an opinion about them, and these issues of Amazing Spider-Man are a prime example of everything that made that era for comics so controversial. Right after the final issue in this omnibus, Larsen would go on to create and publish his own creation, Savage Dragon, for Image Comics, becoming a household name and an entrepreneur! But his rise to comic book artist super-stardom all began here in the pages of Spidey for Marvel Comics! From Venom to Doctor Doom to the Sinister Six, Erik Larsen drew (and later wrote) one of the defining runs for the character. Of course, the art wouldn't mean anything without fantastic script work from David Michelinie, one of the great comic book creators. We'll discuss that and more in this video review of the Amazing Spider-Man omnibus of Erik Larsen!

I found Larsen to be refreshing after Todd McFarlane. Normal sized feet were a plus.

I really don't see how the art is getting "sloppier" in the adjective-less Spider-man. I thought the art looked even better.

I don’t think it translated to the camera. It might even have been the way the artwork was scanned for printing. The lines were huge, with very thick inks. But it does also come down to personal preference, and I could tell editorial had given Larsen a lot more free reign, which I think translated to a lot more flash.

Yeah, I chalked it up to personal preference. Great review man!

For me Todd McFarlane and Eric Larsen Spider-man is the best Spider-man ever. Same goes for Venom. I don't understand the criticism. You could make a poster out of almost every page. Yes, Larsen's pages can get a little chaotic but it's still better that the simplistic artwork in most comics today. Who would prefer Ramos instead of these guys?

I dig Humberto Ramos, but I get your point. I love the issues of the omnibus that Larsen pencilled with Michelinie scripting.

@@CerealAtMidnight Agree, his Revenge of Sinister Six in the Spider-man (1990) title, was bad. Both in script and art.

I have this omnibus as well, and I loved Erik's run. I remember reading many of these comics when I first got into comics. I won't lie at the time I was really looking for back issues of Todd McFarlane's run and felt I had to settle for Larsen. But after reading many of his issues I really enjoyed his style, particularly the use of Spider-man's eyes as showing emotion, or how his costume is constantly getting destroyed and "cracked lenses" on his mask. I loved it how you pointed out the Doctor Doom story that issue is what really won me over and is still to this day one of my favorite Spider-man issues ever. I wish there was more Doom Spider-man stories, prior to that Larsen issue when did Spider-man and Doom meet? Issue 5? Michelinie is a great writer too. He knows how to write a good superhero tale. If you think about it he was the writer for Spider-man for what 100 issues, and Iron Man for about the same. He did have great artists for Spider-man (McFarlane, Larsen and Bagley) so maybe that is why he’s overlooked. Loved this video, now that I think about it I watched it eating a bowl of cereal first thing this morning.

David Michelinie is a fantastic writer and is very underrated. Also, AWESOME that you watched the video while eating cereal!

I thought you'd like the cereal bit, I didn't even realize it until later on today and realized I've watched countless videos eating cereal . Also I found Under the Red Hood on DVD for $3 today. No Murder by Death. I haven't read your review as I'm worried there could be spoilers, and it's one movie I've always wanted to watch.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  6 років тому

I try to never spoil a movie when I write about it, but I understand what you mean. Part of the fun of watching any movie, especially a mystery, is experiencing the plot as it unfolds. That can even be character introductions and basic premise info. I'm excited that Shout Factory is releasing it on Blu-ray at the end of this year, and Mill Creek has announced the sequel, The Cheap Detective, is coming back to DVD soon as part of a three disc/eight movie set of Neil Simon comedies scheduled to release in November. I'll probably be talking about both on the channel when they come out. Also, nice find on Under the Red hood for three bucks!

You are good for spoilerless reviews. Though I'm a fan of murder mysteries and with that cast I couldn't chance it. It's one of those movies that's always in the back of my mind to see but I keep forgetting. If it's coming out on blu ray I may hold off getting it until then, I'll probably nab the cheap detective 8 pack. There was a crazy amount of dvds at vv though, many in the original package. I ended up getting the last Harry Potter movie on dvd sealed for $3 too, among a few others. I was shamed last weekend by a 7 year old over visitor for not owing any Harry Potter Movies past the 2nd one.

I have all the issues in (unread) Epic Collections or single issues. But it's getting harder and harder to resist buying this amazing omnibus to have them in oversized format. I love Eric Larsen's run and I know it will go out of print soon..

Erik Larsen’s Spider-Man art looks like Bagley’s art. It’s astounding how they can draw so identical.

Woahh..the pages looks bright and colorful! I have the single issues...never even read them since their locked away in a closet on top of more comic boxes. This omni bus looks amazing for non-stop reading! Comic paper from back in the day sure have aged and darkened.

Does this omnibus double dip? Between this omnibus, spiderman vs venom and the Todd McFarlane omnibus do they all double dip in some way

to me, Erik Larsen, like Todd McFarlene, I can take in shorter- not too huge- doses- I remember getting the original runs of both artists' work on Amazing Spiderman, and I looked forward to each issue, were talking about back in the late 80s,- early '90s- I thought these guys were the absolute bomb back then, but now? I look at these issues now and cringe at some of the over exaggerated female bodies, super old wrinkly Aunt May, as well as the over inking some of the characters seem to suffer from, not to mention (as you already covered) some of Erik's lack luster writing- I don't think theses issues hold up as well as I originally remembered them- but I didn't know about the house fire he suffered, so I guess we should give him props for getting his work out on time, every time ( that definitely is not the case with many creators these days)- anyhow, great video, keep up the good work!

This is about where I checked out of comics again. I really don't like that full glossy look that shows up later in the book....and which seems so prevalent now. Interesting to see the progression though. I picked up a Marvel Fantastic Four collection of early issues a while ago. Strangely, it appears to be a misprint. One whole comic is missing. There's a notable jump in page numbers (nothing cut out). I couldn't find anyone complaining about it. Real odd bird.

Never read the Larsen run. I read the McFarlane run, which was pretty good
More recently (early 2000) i was a big fan of Strazcynsky's run on Amazing Spider-Man. Heck i'm a fan of his whole body of work (just finished Babylon 5 for the 100th time)

The Straczynski run is wonderful. It's what really brought me back to the character in the early 2000s.

I just looked at your channel and you seem to be doing really well! My advice
To anyone for UA-cam is to just make videos about what you have passion for. Passion always comes out and people can sniff out insincerity. You are a good talker, so as long as you’re making videos about things you love, people will find it and connect. It may take a while, but an audience will come because they want to see what you will talk about next.

I hate most 90's comics. Exceedingly disproportionately ridiculous and over-stylized for me, I'm familiar with this though, when I was younger I used to love it but the more I studied anatomy, the dumber and childish these 90's art have been for me.

Your sending some weird mixed signals for a review of an omnibus. You say you like it and then rattle off 10 minutes of pointless rhetoric about how ," Oh I don't know" and " It doesn't look right". Bro, if I'm going to spend a couple hundred bucks on a collected edition book I'm not caring about your opinion on the content because I already read it 30 years ago. What's new? how does the digital remastering look? you flipped through it like a magazine and left out all the exclusive content. your fired.
