That moment you realize your husband fully comprehends the ungodly existence that is the Red Ghost and had to live through his entire life carrying that burden.
Honestly, though, I don’t see how hard that is. Their origin is pretty straightforward. Red Ghost trained these three primates. They go up into space like the Fantastic Four. They get superpowers. End of story.
We screwed up the bit about Demogoblin, when in fact he was the separated demon previously attached to Macendale when he was the resurrected Hobgoblin. Please accept our apologies.
Easily the best part about this book was the Mary Jane backstory reveal, such a great turn for a beloved character. Stuff like this is what separates her from all the other forgettable Spidey girlfriends. Great episode as always!
I can just imagine peter returns to his destroyed apartment and Mary Jane asks what happened and peter replies there was a spider in the apartment. 😂😂😂
Fun Fact: the dream sequence's adaptation from the 90s animated series was actually out-sourced to (I wanna say a Japan based) out-of-house studio because the team on the show at that time had no faith in their ability to translate that visual, and it looked so good they used it in the intro of every episode (I believe). I really liked the return of the use of the back-screen to show the animated segment, last time I remember seeing that was the Maxx Back Issues. Definitely should get more play when relevant.
Who else thinks that a Goblin-Symbiote War actually sounds kind of hype and that the idea of their being a mystical goblin king to take on Knull is pretty cool
Now I want a comic book starring Tiffany as a mystical super hero who loses her s**t when people give her grief in civilian life. Someone cuts in front of her in the DMV and she banishes them briefly to a dimension of nothing but shrimp. No one will ever believe them. :)
This episode was brilliant haha. Any time there is a zoom in on Tiff, Ethan or Ben, when Sal is explaining the madness behind editorial and writers reasons for such things like The Black Fox etc, got me dying of laughter. The range of emotions, trying to comprehend the existential madness of writing back in the 80's is, and always will be, gold haha.
Actually dont do that. Writers cant legally look at story ideas from other people or else they can get in trouble in the future. If he happens to read that idea it basically ensures that Donny Cates can legally never do anything similar to that story.
@@ComicCrossing But if the writer contacts that person in the first place and ask for permission and then agrees to give credit to the one that came up with the idea, would it be ok?
You just took me back. that was such a great era. Spidey was fighting street-level villains (as it should be), the various nods to ongoings in other books (Thor's Cask of Ancient Winters, Inferno, Scourge, etc)...the mystery of the Hobgoblin, the coolness of the black suit. Good times, man.
I'm not even a half hour into this, and it's already in contention for my favorite Back Issues. I assumed covering a story from my childhood would be fun, but I'm pretty sure people walking by my apartment can hear my laughter. This is gold.
Wow! Fun fact, I own that book! I got it at a Goodwill along with a bunch of solo Spider-Man books, it's what made me actually start reading comics! This should be great.
I wasn't sure initially but just confirmed, it is in fact a local thing. When making the joke about dialing 4 until Reed Richards picks up, we have a commercial that runs here in Sacramento, CA, that's "Dial 444-4444. That's all fours, for legal help." And thought that's what the joke was going to be, initially. Should've figured it was a local thing. Not particularly funny, but amusing. This lawyer chick totally has what the Fantastic Four's number should, and would be.
Yeah, it's also the phone number for a taxi service here in Gateshead, England. And honestly? Their service would be ten times better if the Thing was the driver
9:45 I live in Manhattan, and when Sal said that NY apartments where all mismatched furniture, I thought, “That’s not true”. Then I immediately reminded myself of the barbershop pole and mechanical dolphin ride in my living room I got off the street. Dammit it’s true
I just prefer the ultimate universe version anyway. Makes venoma story personal to Peter and not just a story line that any superhero could have with an alien suit
I don't know what it is but something about the exchange at 35:48 : Tiffany: "Wait... Were the apes hit by cosic rays?" Sal: "No, those are *super apes*." I just could not stop laughing. More Spider-Man stories PLEASE! This was one of the best Back Issues episodes and I can't wait for more.
Wedding issue also dealt with Gale. As Peter helps MJ and Gale have their dad arrested for some crime and on the way back to NYC she accepts his proposal
Wow, all these years I've been learning about Spider-Man and I swear I never knew that the original black costume didn't enhance his strength/adrenaline or change his personality in any sort of way. It's interesting that every modern-day take on the symbiote uses those tropes. I always find something new with Back Issues. 😉
It was something 90s spider man cartoon developed. Then Raimi included that. But still in comics, symbiote didn't completely change the personality. Symbiote instead develops his personality from host and then sometimes symbiote personality becomes dormant.
I really love how you guys spent so much time talking about everything but the actual story, and different scenarios of how you'd handle bullshit in this comic. I like these types of episodes a lot.
Seriously though that pitched for the Goblin-Symbiote War is a great idea and the idea of the Goblin God is awesome! But when Sal started to described Peter nightmare sequence of the costumes fighting my mind immediately went to not only that episode of the 90s series but also the opening for that show had a similar yet smaller version. But why does Sal not like the animated series from the 90s? I probably wouldn't be a Spider-man fan because of it and its why I got all my early canon for Spider-man is that show similar to the Batman Animated series gave me alot of my original head canon for Batman.
Hope one day we get some more Ed Brubaker on this channel. It could be indie or something from the big 2 but would like some more of his work on the channel.

One of the best memes from this show. The slow zoom to Tiffany while Sal is describing that Black Fox. Cinematic beauty.
