Mark Bagley was the artist on what I consider to be my first comic ever, and to this day, he’s still my favorite Spider-Man artist. Met him at NYCC last year, and it was really one of the coolest moments ever
@@talizorah2282 yeah I was about 8 or 9 when the maximum carnage and clone sagas got underway. Never paid any attention to credits back then. But as the cover images flashed by in the video I realized I read and own a lot of his 90s stuff. By the 2000s I had moved from superhero stuff to aliens and predator comics, and then into weird goth indies
You forgot to mention the fact that Mark Bagley is one hell of a workhorse! The guy never missed a deadline in his entire career and that's why Marvel editors *love* him. That certainly made him stand out specially at a time when some of the "super stars" typically delivered 04 to 06 issues per year at best.
I scrolled down looking for something like this. Even though I'm not a Marvel guy, I've heard he is a fast, very reliable artist. That earns my respect.
That's what I was coming here to comment. There were months, during his Ultimate Spider-Man run, when he'd crank out two full issues, with no fill ins or backups.
Mark Bagley was one of the best Spider-Man artists ever. His dynamic style made it appear the art was actually moving, almost as if Spider-Man would swing right from the pages. I also loved his run on The New Warriors and the Thunderbolts.
13:46 To be fair to Bagley... Aren't power girl & super girl literally the same person just from different worlds 😂. So if any characters end up look exactly alike it would be them In any case Mark's work is consistently great, since he stays on a book it gives it a manga like sense of consistently. I would love to see Bagley do more grounded stories, he might do well on a romance title, or even something magical but without capes
Ultimate Spider-Man got me into comics in general, and Bagley is definitely my favourite comic artist ever. I actually still have some Ultimate Spider-Man bedroom merch from when I was a kid, and it all has his art on it.
Bagley's one of the all time greats. A machine that can hit a deadline in an era when that's far from the norm and he's continued to grow and improve as an artist throughout his entire career.
I'd been into Spider-Man since before I could talk, watching the cartoons & playing with the toys. When I was about 10, it was Bagley's art in Amazing that turned me into a comic collector. I'd read anything I came across before then, newspaper strips, The Phantom, Archie... anything. But Bagley's Spider-Man & Venom impressed me so much started hunting his art down specifically. I don't think he's the best artist, but he's certainly one of my favorites.
The Ultimate universe had a lot of issues, but the Bagley/Bendis run on Spider-Man is legendary. As a 90's kid who grew up on all things Spidey, their run on Ultimate came at the right time for me---it's still my favorite Spider-Man story out there. Those books felt decidedly worse without his art, and I don't think it's a coincidence the whole thing ended shortly after he left.
What I love the most about your videos is your analysis of the artwork. Too many comic book channels focus on plot holes an story, so it's nice to hear what I pay attention to when I attempt to become a better cartoonist.
I remember when Bagley debuted on Spiderman. I liked the artwork immediately, it felt somewhat refreshing, while at the same time faithful to Ditko's legacy. Probably I endured through the clone saga thanks to him, because the story itself was a mess and I didn't like the idea from the start. What a drag! It burned me out and I think it was after that saga that I stopped reading Spiderman. Looking forward to your review of it.
I love Mark Bagley's work on the '90s Spider-Man titles. For me, Bagley is THE definitive modern Spider-Man artist, as his instantly recognizable rendition of Spider-Man defined the character for not just one, but TWO generations -- the '90s kids who grew up on the Marvel vs. Capcom games, and the fans from the early 2000s who got on board the Spidey train with Ultimate Spider-Man. While I think his '90s work is superior to his recent stuff, he's still my all-time favorite artist. I hope I get the chance to meet him someday.
Ultimate Spider-Man comics were my favorites as a kid. Seeing Bagley’s work come to life in a video game was also spectacular ;) Definitely one of my favorite artists of all time!
I literally grew up on Ultimate Spider-man and it was probably mostly Bagley's work on this series that inspired me with a dream to become a comic-book artist myself. Since then that dream has transformed a bit (now I'm more into CG and gamedev, but I still like comic style), and in this year I'm finally coming close to getting into industry. So yeah, thank you for this video, it was very inspiring and a bit nostalgic to listen about that in retrospective. Thank you for great content and keep up a good work!
Mark Bagley was my introduction to Spider-Man artwork back in the nineties and one of the first art styles I tried to emulate. To this day, my work on face silhouettes and muscle definition is hugely influenced by his style.
Bagley can actually draw backgrounds really well. Wonderful and dynamic angles with a firm grasp of perspective with looking like a photo swipe or 3D mock-up. Hand drawn backgrounds are a forgotten art.
This dude work was the first Marvel Art (Except from the SpiderMan TAS in the 90s) I saw as a kid wiht the Ultimate Spider Man. And I ought to say... It has ages so FKING well!
I just met this guy in Kansas City. He signed my graphic novel, which compiles volume 1 of the Pulse. He's my favorite artist, and I'm studying his work a lot. Wonderful sense of humor and very polite.
I remember Mark Bagley on those back-up features in "Captain America". I was a big fan of early "New Warriors", and found his artwork very appealing and clear. I was in my late teens then, and New Warriors resonated with me.
Always found it interesting that Bagley didn't want to draw Ultimate Spider-Man because he was tired of drawing him in the 90s... then went on to do over 100 issues featuring him. Hell of a consistent artist. Recently started reading his Thunderbolts run.
I think you're right. Bagley's work on Spidey was overshadowed by the fact the Clone Saga just drained every fan's patience, and it happened once again when he went to work for DC and he got to draw Trinity, which made sense to no one but the writer. To me, Bagley's Spidey is the version of versions. It may sound sacrilegious when Romita, Sr. is still the king, but I grew up reading Bagley's artwork. And I'd say his work on Ultimate Spider-Man more than qualifies him as one of Spider-Man's greatest artists.
Maybe using a picture of Supergirl and Powergirl as a basis for criticizing his faces looking similar was a joke, but all the same, feels a bit silly. Like, “Oh no, Kara Zor-El and Kara Zor-L look the same. What a tragedy!” lol I love Bagley’s art style. My first exposure to him was his run on Ultimate Spider-Man, which is still my favorite version of the character. His art is expressive, clean, and instantly recognizable. I was incredibly upset when he left the comic for a bit. The other artists just couldn’t live up to what we’d gotten before. I met him several years ago at DragonCon in Atlanta. He was humble and easygoing, and just a pleasure to talk to.
I collected the Bagley ultimate Spider-Man run. As well as the Ultimates 1&2 and X-Men by Millar. Man it was awesome. All your videos are a trip to memory lane. Props from Brazil.
