      If you've something with it's own battery i would rather get a tracking module based on GPS or Wifi LBS. You can get such modules for ~10 bucks, they're smaller, have even a microphone and are much easier to track because they don't rely on iphones being nearby so you get much more frequent updates of the position. Also remember that the Airtags will a) start beeping after some time and b) most will know what it is and just throt it away. If you really want a thief protection build it in so nobody can see it. AirTags are made to find your own stuff, but for thief protection they've too many downsides in my opinion.

    • @jimihenrik11
      @jimihenrik11 3 роки тому +2

      @@Leif_YTi have been searching for something like that for years. The problem is gps trackers are immensely expensive, very big and usually have very poor battery life. Near field trackers are smaller, cheaper and longer lasting but don't help with theft. The airtag is a good idea because it makes use of the wide network of IPhone users to effectively use a near field tracker as an long range tracker. If you know any device that i could use similarly as theft protection I'd like to get a recommendation.

      @@jimihenrik11 I've recently used the ZX620, but there seems to be a never version. Currently there are modules like the ZX303
      & ZX623 (and a more expensive 813 or so), or with enclosure the GF21 and GF22. If you're into electronics and prefer to do you own software instead of a 3rd party market one you could also use something like a Sim808 and an arduino or esp. Usually the pure electronics for GPS trackers are very cheap these days - just make sure to look in Asian Stores like AliExpress or in hobby stores for quadcopter/drones and such stuff. They usually use similar modules to track their drones & planes or to find them when they get lost.
      The battery life is a problem with such systems, but if you protect an e-bike or some devices that have big batteries inside it's not such a concern. If it has to run on a small battery i would use an accelerometer to activate it only when it gets stolen - so it doesn't run 24/7.
      But yes, it depends a lot on what you want to track. If someone still wants to use an AirTag for anti theft tracking i would at least try to destroy/remove the sound mechanism so it won't start beeping after some time.

      Depending on the country mobile operators might also have solutions. Here you can get a small gps / gsm tracker for like 2-3 bucks a month with the e-sim included and 7 days battery life. Often they advertise them as GPS Pet Tracker or so.

    Based on Apple's website, it cannot help if you bike has stolen and the robber has an iPhone as well:
    "AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s traveling with you and send you an alert. After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there."

    The best thing about friendly bike thieves is that they don’t check the bike for trackers when they steal it. It’s those unfriendly ones I’m more concerned about.

    Why does it take this long to get the location updates? This runs on FindMy network so lost airtags can communicate with all Apple devices nearby which is why I thought it would deliver near real-time updates as there'll be a bunch of Apple devices mostly at all times.

    • @Bikespeeds

      It relies on making a blue tooth connection & in turn the phone it’s connected to being online. That’s why we did this to see if a speeding bike could be connected in the few moments it was near another device. We had to second guess where he was going with local knowledge but that we did & this was a genuine find & to come out in front of him for the stop was as perfect as it could have gone!

    • @subatomic2012

      @@Bikespeeds I suspect its more down to conserving the airtags battery life that it probably only pings out every now and then to see if there are iOS devices nearby on bluetooth. It runs off a rather small coin cell which is rated to last a year. It simply wouldnt have enough power to be trackable in realtime for an entire year.

    Great video
    I think a lot of people here are over estimating the majority of bike thieves
    The large majority of who are junkies (not rocking iPhone) or street rats (generally stupid and cant tell there bum hole from there elbow) place one of these in the tube where your forks and handlebar goes and a large majority won't have a clue. Even if it beebs or tells the thieves iPhone they will ignore it or dump the bike. People panic when they think they will get caught, hence car alarms and house alarms being loud it is a deterrent that has been successful for a long time and for the price completely worth it if you are on an iPhone. No it isn't the end of bike theft no one said it was but it helps
