I'm sure everyone and their uncle is gong to suggest "Eye of the Tiger", but Survivor had a slew of terrific songs in the 80s: "I Can't Hold Back", "High On You", "The Search is Over", and my personal favorite "Is This Love". Fun fact: Jim Peterik, the keyboardist, was also the lead singer for a 70s one-hit wonder called The Ides of March. Amber, you would absolutely go nuts for "Vehicle", as it's horns are insane!
The lead singers name is Jimi Jamison , Jim Peterik is the keyboard player and wrote many hit songs, very talented man, but you need to listen to more survivor with Jimi Jamison as lead singer he puts everything into his singing.
Every song you named is better than this one. This is about the 20th time they have done a new group with about their 10th best song. 2nd on Vehicle, outstanding hit.

As others have mentioned, this song was used during the training montage in "Rocky IV", so Amber is right on in her assessment. Survivor is best known for singing "Eye of the Tiger", the theme song for Rocky III.
Eye of the Tiger was originally sung by Dave Bickler but he had to have throat surgery so they hired Jimi Jamison and he continued to sing it and every song until he left the band and returned a few times before he went solo amazing vocalist

Survivor is a good solid rock band who made some great records but weren't flashy just solid hitmakers-"Is This Love", "The Search Is Over", "I Can't Hold Back"-solid staples on MTV in the 80's but one of those bands it seems people take for granted. You won't be disappointed in Survivor.

You may have heard their biggest song 'Eye of the Tiger' if you have ever watched the Rocky movies with Sylvester Stallone.
Survivor is from Chicago in the late 70’s. Their big break when Sly Stallone chose them to write the theme for Rocky 3 Eye of the Tiger. Burning Hearts is from Rocky 4. Rocky is facing Russian Champion Ivan Drago and thus the references to the Cold War. Other Survivor songs include:

You have only just scratched the surface with Survivor, one of my favorite 80's bands!! You must listen to "I Can't Hold Back", "High on You" and the "Search is Over"!! The lead singer, Jimi, had an incredible voice and was also gorgeous, in my opinion. RIP, we lost him much to young.

The singer is Jimi Jamison. Hes from Memphis. Very loved and we all have followed him since the 70s. Amazing voice. We miss him dearly.

Jimi had one of the greatest voices ever. It's too bad people only listen to the hits because almost all the songs on the albums Too Hot to Sleep and When Seconds Count are fantastic plus his personal albums.. He was a great loss to the rock music world. He is being inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame October 12th, 2023; Survivor and Jimi should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! I listen to his singing everyday.❤

Three of the first four Rocky movies had songs that have often been used to pump up sports teams: The original had "Gonna Fly Now" and "Going the Distance"--both are essentially instrumentals, while the third Rocky had "Eye of the Tiger" and the fourth had this song--as well as James Brown's "Living in America"

Jimi was one of the greatest vocalists I ever heard. His passion for the songs he sang was like none other and I believe he would of sang for free, that’s how much he loved it. Survivor is probably my favorite band from the 1980's. They had a nice string of hits plus the fantastic "Vital Signs" album. Every song on that album is great. Other great songs and hits from Survivor are "Poor Man's Son", "I Can't Hold Back", "High on You", "The Search Is Over", "First Night", "Is This Love", "Everlasting", "Broken Promises", "Popular Girl", and "I See You In Everyone."
Their biggest song is Eye of the Tiger, with a different lead singer, Dave Bickler. Most of their success happened with lead singer Jimi Jamison with songs such as I Can't Hold Back, High on You, Broken Promises, Is This Love, When Seconds Count, and Desperate Dreams. I saw them once at a concert where they shared equal billing with another excellent band, REO Speedwagon.
REO, Survivor, and Styx, were all Chicago bands playing dive bars before they hit the big time.

Journey's "Homemade Love" from the old days outs Steve Perry as having had a massive crooner influence, and hits some high notes that will blow Jay out from under his headphones! I like studio version better.
The live version of "Mother, Father" from 1981 Houston, Texas is a must see. Amazing!

They looked to be a one-hit wonder in 1982 with "Eye of the Tiger," but came back with a number of hits in the mid-80's, including this song. However, they faded by the late 80's and have pretty much stayed under the radar since.
Wow….never knew this was by Survivor! I only know Eye of the Tiger by them. If I heard this on the radio, I would assume it was Journey. It sure is totally in Journey’s wheelhouse….you two MUST listen to EYE of the TIGER by Survivor. That will definitely pump you up!

🥊 This song was created to be a training song for Rocky in Rocky IV. He is in Siberia at Christmas training for a fight against the man who killed his friend. This represents his struggle and drive, but also the EAST (Russia-Ivan Drago) vs. WEST (USA-Rocky). This song/movie was made in the 80s during the Cold War. It will always be my favorite movie and the soundtrack is incredible!

I loved Survivor soooooo much!!!! Jimi Jamison was such a fabulous singer!! And quite the looker, I must say! You need to lister to many more of their songs...especially High on you!. Their keyboard player was soooo magnificent !! I miss you Jimi! We lost Jimi Jameson wayyyyyyy tooooo soon!!😰 They were a very big band! There were so many great bands, singers, etc, esp. in the 70’s, 80’s. There’s no way you’ll ever find them all! Here’s one! My very fav. For decades was Henry Lee Summer. My family listened to him over and over.... He opened for 38 Special in Pa. in 1989. He never got really big, like he should have, because he got married soon after, and had 4 kids, and he didn’t like to leave his family (so honorable). He wrote All of his own music, but of course a band had to play the other parts in concert. He had more energy than anyone I’ve ever witnessed. He always danced and jumped in his songs. And considering He was about 6’6”, and weighed about 140. It made it look like ginormous jumps! He had really long, curly hair, and always wore Chuck Taylor Converse( He even wrote a song about them! Tho they weren’t my 2 favorite songs, you may have heard”Wish I had a girl who walked like that” and “Hey Baby”. He lived next door to Peyton Manning, and was offered a full ride basketball scholarship. What in heck am I talking about him for, when Survivors ion??? Okay I clicked VERY fast when I saw this reaction because I freaking LOVE Survivor. This song is actually from the movie Rocky IV with Sylvester Stallone, fun fact. You guys might know their most popular song Eye of The Tiger but I also love I Cant Hold Back and The Search is Over (my mom's all time fave song by them). Gotta react to those two songs for sure.
It's crazy because I could've sworn that you had listened to Eye Of The Tiger before. That one is definitely worth listening to, along with "High On You", and "The Search Is Over".

Survivor was the first concert I ever saw back in the 80s. Their entire Vital Signs album is awesome.

I'm honestly surprised you haven't heard of and/or done "Eye of the Tiger" yet. It's their most well known song. Eye of the Tiger was written for Rocky III, and Burning Heart was written for Rocky IV. I love both, and, of course, I think you're required by law to love Eye of the Tiger. But, to be perfectly honest, I think Burning Heart is more epic. The chorus isn't as catchy as Eye of the Tiger, but the vocal styling and the Cold War themed lyrics are just super cool.

Everytime I hear this song I think about Rocky getting ready to fight the Russian
The song was from Rocky 4, released in 1985 at the height of the Cold War between the US and the USSR. The song has two levels- Rocky against Ivan Drago the Russian and the US and the USSR. At the end of the movie Rocky makes a speech echoing this, and the need to change so the nations don't kill each other as the fighters were for 15 VERY brutal rounds.
“The Moment of Truth” from The Karate Kid is one of their best songs along with “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky III.

This song sounds like a sports anthem because it was used as the theme song for the Rocky IV movie. They did the song for Rocky III "Eye of the Tiger" and it did so well they wanted to try and recreate the popularity by having them do the theme for IV.

He sounded BETTER than the record and it is truly live. Do yourself a favor and watch High on You and I can't hold back first.....his VOCAL RANGE is STUNNING!!

Survivor's second hit from a 'Rocky' soundtrack: 'Eye of the Tiger' was from 'Rocky III' and this one is from 'Rocky IV' so the theme is the Soviet Union vs. the USA, as was the theme of the boxing matches in the film. A typical mid-80s theme.
Survivor was an 80s hard rock band that did a lot of songs for movie soundtracks as well. Back in the 80s, most movies had pop songs as the main part of their soundtracks which were released on Soundtrack albums and on most Soundtracks you could usually find one or two songs on there by Survivor. "Burning Heart" was on the Rocky IV soundtrack which depicted Rocky vs Dolph Lungren who played a Russian boxer. Which is where you get the East vs West lyric in the song. Survivor's other big Rocky song was "Eye of the Tiger" from the Rocky III soundtrack.
The 80s were some weird times when it came to rock music. From the late 70s to about the mid 80s, these kinds of hard rock bands are all we had. Kinda simple riffs, clean clear beats, and not very much distortion. But then the hair metal and thrash metal came up in the mid 80s and they introduced distortion and the sound of rock changed forever.
Jimi Jameson was the second lead vocalist for this band. The first, Dave Bickler, had to leave the band after developing polyps on his vocal cords. Jameson replaced him in the band after their 4th album.
This was also their second song for a "Rocky" movie. The first was for "Rocky III", "Eye of the Tiger". Dave Bickler was the lead singer for that song and album, which was their third album.
The easiest way to tell who is lead vocalist is that Dave Bickler wears a beret in the videos.

Most of Survivor’s songs were written by Frankie Sullivan (the lead guitarist) and Jim Petrik (the keyboardist) and the combination of their lyrics and melodies are incredible. Add Dave Bickler’s voice theough their first 4 albums and Jimi Jamison’s through the rest provides a huge catalogue of songs to chose from.
As a solo artist, Jimi recorded the theme for Baywatch and released another handful of incredible albums that showcased his voice. All of his stuff is excellent.
Once Dave Bickler’s voice healed, we got to hear him a lot. He was the voice of Budweiser’s Real Men of Courage ad campaign over the years.
Sullivan and Petrik also wrote songs for other great 80s bands especially .38 Special.
When I listen to "Burning Heart" I always have the scene in my head from Rocky 4 where Rocky is training and so is Ivan Drago his Soviet opponent.
Yes, everyone will suggest the most well-known and well played song by Survivor, Eye of the Tiger. Eventually you’ll get to most of the the bands and the artists that all of us out here are rooting for. But this band is one you just didn’t know that you already knew.
Survivor is awesome. They were the default band for a bunch of Sylvester Stallone movies. In addition to their biggest hit, “Eye of the Tiger”, they killed it with so many great songs. My favorite, tho little known, is “man against the world”. “I can’t hold back”, “the search is over” also great.

The Rocky IV soundtrack is awesome of course though, and featuring two of Survivors biggest tracks including this one was definitely a large reason for this

Great job! Survivor had some great songs and I had the pleasure of seeing them live in the 80s. If you have not yet checked out Mister Mister, that might be a rabbit hole from the 80s for you and I would suggest Kyrie to get you started. Amazing vocals and instrumentation.

Dave Bickler was the original lead vocalist. He was replaced by Jameson, who died of a stroke in 2014 while he was high on meth. So much for being a survivor.

Fun Fact: Stallone initially chose Survivor after hearing the Poor Man's Song. He called up Jim Peterik and asked him to write another song in the same vain. What Stallone got was Eye Of The Tiger.

Survivor has a bunch of good songs. Eye of the tiger is probably the best known because it was a song from Rocky three, just like this song was from Rocky IV.
There is one very little known song that I love of theirs. It’s on the eye of the tiger album and it’s called ever since the world began. It’s a cute little ballad. I just like it a lot but it’s not very popular or not well-known. Enjoy.

Yes! As soon as I saw the title, I clicked on it so fast. I was like "Survivor! I suggested them just the other day!" lol I love this song too, from the movie Rocky IV. "Eye of the Tiger" is from Rocky III and "I Can't Hold Back" is my favorite Survivor song.
With the lyrics, you have to remember... it was written FOR the movie Rocky 4. Rocky fights Russian boxer. This movie was at the height of the Cold War so everything was USA vs. USSR
