  • In one of the most amazing wildlife encounters in my life, we join a local nonprofit group on a nocturnal adventure to try and find the second largest amphibian on the planet: the Japanese giant salamander!
This once in a lifetime opportunity to find a giant salamander in the wild would not have been possible without the help of the talented Richard Pearce, director of Sustainable Daisen. To learn more about how this nonprofit organization is helping to conserve these amazing creatures, please check out their website here:
    www.sustainabledaisen.org
Richard was also kind enough to share some of the incredible underwater footage he has captured of hanzaki during surveys, including the fantastic close-ups of the face and feeding behavior that are shown in this video.
If you enjoyed this video, please be sure to leave a like and share it with your friends. If you didn't, please leave a comment telling me what I could improve on. For more educational wildlife content, subscribe to my channel. New videos go up on Thursday mornings at 10 AM!

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I have years of zoology experience under my belt. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

Not gonna lie, that climb up the water was a bit precarious looking. What an awesome experience, especially hanging out with Richard. Very knowledgable, dig his story about how he got into this whole thing.

Not falling and destroying my camera gear was definitely challenging at times, but it made finding them sweeter. Richard is awesome, such a quality human!

This was absolutely fantastic Ben! Literally the video I was most excited to watch all week. I had no idea that there were sustainable ecotourism opportunities with hanzaki that were this accessible, that is now a huge bucket list item for me. The work that Sustainable Daisen is doing is so important, and you did a great job of expressing how insanely cool these animals are and why they are so worthy of protection and appreciation. You had some killer footage in here, that feeding shot was nuts. I didn’t realize how vestigial their eyes are, that’s actually fascinating to think about an apex predator being almost completely blind. Amazing work!

Beautiful presentation, verbally and visually! Thanks for taking us on this “mythical, magical” revelatory journey (that most of us could not physically endure) with you!

Absolutely STUNNING Video Ben!!!!! These salamanders are an absolutely legendary creature and honestly I’m so jealous you got to see them haha… also was rlly neat seeing Richard here too!! I’ve actually seen him on another UA-camrs channel as well known as thegamingbeaver and from what I’ve seen he seems like a truly funny, awesome and down to earth guy who’s very passionate about these salamanders!! So I’m super stoked you got to film with him, I’m so happy for you… it’s so exciting that you got this opportunity I can’t wait to see what you got cooked up for the future, keep up the great work man :)
