  • Amphibians have evolved some incredible chemical weaponry, but this enormous toad may have taken things a little too far by biologically synthesizing both illegal drugs and deadly toxins.
    In this episode of The Wild Report, we embark on a nocturnal adventure in the deserts of Arizona to try and find the largest native toad in the United States, the Sonoran Desert toad! With the monsoon rains kicking in, we'd also have the chance to encounter some other rarely seen species along the way, including the couch's spadefoot toad and regal horned lizard!

    If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I am a professional biologist. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
    Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

    Really interesting that the horned toad is a victim of invasive red fire ants. And unfortunately the DEA is rounding up all the poor little Sonora toads. Better call Saul. Great show Ben. Thanks for taking one for the team.

      Yeah it's pretty unfortunate, fire ants really are the worst. Glad I could show off a few amazing species, even if it did result in a cactus spining.

    Really good video Ben, Sonoran desert toads have to be the craziest and also coolest toads in the country and I’m glad you got to see one. Nice find on the horned lizard as well, I’d love a whole video dedicated to them, have you done one yet? This is one of your best title and thumbnail combos ever, by the way. Great stuff!

    They've been all over the place lately because of the monsoon. In fact, all the amphibs had a party last week due to some heavy rains. But you know how it goes here, the rain is no more, until the next round.

    I didn't hear you mention it, so I assume the toad drug doesn't absorb through the skin.
    Great video, all you bug and reptile boys give us loads of fun information.

    • @TheWildReportOfficial
      @TheWildReportOfficial  4 дні тому +1

      Well they can definitely absorb water and I assume (but need to check) partially respire through their skin, but toads are typically the least absorbent of the amphibians. Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed!

    I grew up in SW Oklahoma and spent a lot of my youth playing with horny toads. Unfortunately they kind of disappeared. What happened?…..also twice a year millions of tarantulas would appear for a couple of weeks and hop all over the place. They too mostly disappeared. Do you have any clue what happened? Thanks young man. PS….I live in Louisiana now and we have lots of tarantulas but they look a lot different than the ones in Oklahoma.

      That's so dissappinting. I think a variety of factors could be responsible, including invasive fire ant invasions and a changing climate altering natural migration patterns. Development and the resulting habitat destruction is the most likely candidate though.

    Don't you need surgical gloves to pick any amphibian ? Especially a wild one?

    • @TheWildReportOfficial
      @TheWildReportOfficial  4 дні тому

      I'd recommend gloves if you are going to handle multiple amphibians in a single outing or when working with sensitive species, but generally I just ensure there is a barrier of either water or sediment between my hands and the amphibian skin so that my skin oils don't interfere with their mucus layer.
