Herping Japan: Discovering Hidden Snakes And Spiders!

- You might know Japan's bustling cities and rich culture, but let me take you on an adventure into the incredible Japanese wilderness as we search for beautiful snakes and supersized spiders!
Searching for wildlife in Japan has been one of the most amazing experiences of my career as a conservation biologist, allowing me to experience a completely different landscape, new species, and different land management practices than I'm used to. My herping goal, as usual, was to find and catch a new species of snake, but on this adventure we not only found some beautiful Japanese rat snakes but also get to meet a huntsman spider that was hanging out beside the trail.

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I have years of zoology experience under my belt. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

Hey y'all, thanks again for taking the time to join me on our first adventure in wild Japan! I'm beyond excited for the rest of this series and hope you are too.
As I experiment with new narrative/editing/thumbnail styles moving forward, your feedback is going to be a critically important part of my creative process. Please let me know what you like or don't like as I explore these new production techniques. I'll take all feedback, good and bad, into consideration as I map out my future content strategy, so if you have opinion I'd love to hear it!
Thanks again for your continual support, and I'll see you on our next animal adventure!

Whoa Ben's in Japan? That was completely unexpected and a pleasant surprise. You have definitely upped your editing game. I got a kick out of the sound effects for a striking snake and "we are not friends". You are an entertaining educator and I hope to see your channel grow enough that it makes sense for you to do videos like this more often. I look forward to the rest of your Japan videos. Take care!
Thanks so much, really appreciate the feedback on the updated editing style! It's definitely the dream to use UA-cam to film and conserve even more amazing animals.
It's so cool he's starting to go to new countries. I'm super excited for the rest of this series!
This was my first overseas trip and it definitely did not disappoint, the landscape and wildlife were both breathtaking.
Dig the new style of editing, I'm big on the creativity side of YT, so good on you. Congrats on the rats, such amazing-looking snakes. Look forward to the rest of the series. Who knows? Maybe we'll cross paths sometime out in the field.
Thanks dude! Yeah who knows, that would be pretty amazing.
I liked the new editing.
The comments from the snake were hilarious.
Good to know, I wasn't sure if it was going to be too distracting or get obnoxious. Greatly appreciate the feedback!
Finally someone filming wildlife in Japan! So seeing that you were or still are in Japan, you've probably run into Sika deer....
Your fantastic videos keep getting better and better. Thanks so much for taking us along on your adventures. I learn so much from your explanations.
I'm so glad you think my content is improving, thanks for the kind words!
I've been watching your stuff on and off since that Burmese Python video went viral on reddit. Keep up the hard work!
Dang that's like ancient history now haha. Glad you've stuck around for the ride and continue to support my content!
Nice job Ben! I really enjoyed this video as always but I could also tell this is MUCH more polished than your older videos.
I think you did fantastic on this first entry, the text overlays and Pokémon references were done well imo, not overdone at all. My only real critique of this video is the uneven audio levels in different shots but I know how hard audio is, especially on the move!
Thank you Ben for doing these videos. It's easy to tell how much you truly love these animals and working with them. Your positivity is infectious! ❤
Thank you so much for the kind words and detailed feedback! I'll definitely try and crack down on the audio more moving forward, this video was tricky because I accidentally killed my lavalier mic about halfway through filming and had to swap out for different audio hardware.
That’s a very professional video Ben. I’m so looking forward to more from Japan because your view of the world is refreshing.
Thanks so much, I'm really glad to hear that!
hiya Ben! been watching your channel for a couple years, i always love your herping videos! glad to see you exploring new places
Thanks for supporting the channel for so long, this was definitely one of the coolest adventures I've had yet!
Awesome. Love this video. Beautiful rat snake!
Thank you very much!
This is SO COOL. Incredibly excited for the rest of this series!
Thanks Micah :)
Good stuff. Love seeing the rat snakes in Japan. Well done.
Very cool finds, Ben! I’ve always wanted to visit Japan for their wildlife and I’m glad you had the opportunity to see some first hand! Great video! Btw editing was perfect!
As usual Ben this is another great video. Love the quality and content your videos have. The only problem with this series that I can see is that you didn't take me with you...hahaha
Thanks for the support, Steven! That's gonna be a hard editing fix, I'll see what I can do. Maybe I'll just deep fake you into the background haha
Fantastic video! I watch a lot of vlogs and videos on Japan, but never seen one about its wildlife.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed!
Thank you Ben
Love this series
A different look at Japan!
Have fun!!
Glad you enjoyed this episode, many more adventures in Japan are on the way!
Great video Ben I truly enjoyed it. ❤️👍
Thanks Walter, always enjoy seeing your comments!
This video was fantastic Ben! I have been so excited to see your Japan content, and you did not disappoint, those rat snakes were absolutely beautiful. I love huntsman spiders and I’m super happy to see them featured in content from Japan, Japanese inverts are very underrated in my opinion. I really enjoyed the more narrative approach to the video, watching it reminded me of watching an Animal Planet tv show in many ways and I found it very engaging. Not to mention I already love the wildlife of Japan and have always wanted to explore there, I can’t wait for the rest of the series!
Thanks a bunch, really glad to hear your feedback on the slight style adjustment! Always appreciate your detailed comments and continual support.
Bro what an incredible video, thanks Ben!!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed!
This was so cool, such beautiful snakes!
Thank you, these really are some of the coolest looking snakes I've ever worked with.
really enjoy your content! nice finds! love seeing what these little creatures are like in other countries.
Thank you! It was amazing to see animals that were so similar to what I find back home but also totally new.
It looks like a beautiful place to visit. The Japanese Four Lined Ratsnakes look like they are a lot more high strung than the European Four Lined, those guys are pretty much like Black Ratsnakes in temperament. Even the wild ones are very calm.
It absolutely is a beautiful landscape! I was also surprised about the temperament of this snake, I was expecting black rat snake but it was more like a racer haha
Really awesome vid, with a totally gorgeous star! (the rat snake of course ;) I'm super excited to see the rest of what you have in store :) My favourite aspect of your channel is your friendly, straightforward and concise way of speaking. This, paired with your editing (cutting to close ups on the animal or the surrounding nature mid monologue) creates an excellent way of keeping me focused on what exactly you want to convey. I guess that's pretty obvious to you since you're already doing it, but it reeaally make you stand out as a presenter, even from some serialized tv productions which tells me its no easy feat.
I also like the additional commentary you provided about your thoughts on the area, the weather conditions, maybe the natural habitat of the snakes and spiders? and your hypothesis on the altitude-snake-prey relationship. I don't mind if you want to add banal commentary because it's probably going to be thoughtful. I also laughed at the floating white text + sfx. So yeah...double thumbs up, and sorry for the long comment 😅
Recently while hiking with my troop in the rain there was a baby copperhead I identified it almost instantly because of the Hershey kiss on it's back and told my troop not to scare it
That's awesome, glad you could keep it safe!
@TheWildReportOfficial It was really cool to see a snake like that. I couldn't see the head because other kids were blocking my view. But I still kept my distance to prevent if from getting scared and striking. However the snake had a beautiful darker color from what I could tell
Fantastic job Ben!!!
Thanks Jacob!
5:27 😮 5:52
It has such a loud strike haha
Haha yeah no sound editing there
I think that the animal of the shape shown is a sika deer, because I am pretty sure that they are very common in most areas in Japan.
That's an amazing guess, we'll find out next video!
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@TheWildReportOfficial thank you for making awesome content

I was hoping to hit japan for a few hours on the way back from Borneo, but sadly it didn't happen
I’ve never been as excited about Japan. I prefer going to China again and again. I think China can never be fully explored. Thousands of years of history. Every city is different. The food is phenomenal. Love the people.
but that’s just me. Curious why Japan always gets more love and interest. Great vlog though! Cool critters!
I would absolutely love to explore China at some point, but Japan is special to me because so many of the cultural exports that occupied my childhood are Japanese. When I eventually hopefully make it to China, I think I'll end up spending a minimum of a month exploring there in addition to Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. so I might end up saving it for a summer when I don't have something else going on.
You are all over the place.😊
Anywhere there's a snake to be found there's a good chance I'd like to visit haha
Hey
Really high quality video
what is the name of the camera
