  • This bizarre, legless reptile may look like a snake, but there's much more to legless lizards when you take a closer look. In today's episode of The Wild Report, let's try to catch and learn about the unique adaptations of the Eastern glass lizard!

    If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I am a professional biologist. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
    Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

    Great stuff Ben, eastern glass lizards have to be some of the coolest lizards in the country, and it’s always a treat to get one in hand in the wild. Lots of good info in here, as usual you deliver so much value in so little time. We could take some notes on that… nice work!

      Thanks guys, this easily could have been a 10+ minute video if I could have thought of some visuals to back up a deeper dive into their evolutionary history. Appreciate the support!

    Truly an amazing species. I have seen a couple of slender glass lizards out here, their speed is ludicrous.

      Yeah they can zoom once they warm up, and especially in scrubby areas can completely disappear in a few seconds.

    Growing up in central Florida, I saw these pretty often in our yard. Thanks so much for explaining exactly what makes them not snakes. 😄

    Great video! I think the species for the next video looks like a larger toad species, either a Sonoran Desert Toad (Colorado River Toad) or a Cane Toad based off of the last two videos, being in either Arizona or Florida.

      It's quite difficult to get good footage without catching one first, they seem to freeze up once they know they've been snagged.

    I was fooled - definitely thought it was a snake at first glance. Great Vid Ben!

    Ben, can you define "unkeeled scales"? I can't find it. Very cool episode. I would like to see a drag race between the glass lizard and our western whiptail lizard.

    • @TheWildReportOfficial
      @TheWildReportOfficial  18 днів тому +1

      Yes! That refers to scales that lack a keel, or central ridge. Haha that would be quite a sight!

    Great video like always.
    They say you learn something new everyday this is something very interesting I didn’t know.
    I also don’t see it moving around like a snake would when you are holding it. Thank you for another awesome video.

      @TheWildReportOfficial  18 днів тому

      Thank you, glad to hear that you learned something new! Yeah they are different than snakes in that regard as well, I think it just decided it wasn't worth the energy to try and escape and instead it just froze.

      @TheWildReportOfficial  18 днів тому

      They are kinda cute, but if you look at them from the side they have a pretty mean side-eye haha. Yeah the scales are crazy cool on this species!

    I always learn cool new info with every video. I have tried to photograph glass lizards in situ and they are very wary and quick. I'm going to guess the next genus- Anaxyrus. I struggle to tell an American from a Fowlers from a Southern toad even when I can see the markings, so I'm not going to species level.

    • @TheWildReportOfficial
      @TheWildReportOfficial  16 днів тому

      Thanks, Trent! So glad to hear that you are still learning from my videos even though you are a herp expert. That's a great guess, also yep I'm in the same boat with species ID haha!
