Hey man I'm from Brazil I never seen a full USA game but the way you described the team playing style (crossing and trying to get a head) was the exact way my team (Cruzeiro) played for 2 years in a roll during a huge crisis in series B. We only managed to get back to serie A by getting new players and change to a more aggressive style. This way of going for the sides and trying to make a cross pass doesn't work and is done by the worst squads here in Brazil!
I haven't watched any videos other than the best moments of the U.S. team, but I can assure you that when you guys had the ball, you guys would play on the wings, find no space in the box, and back the ball to midfield, stay in a loop, fluff and try a frustrated pass/shot in the box from the corners

As a Colombian, I fear the day the US actually gets its shit together and starts paying attention to football, because then they're gonna be a pain in the ass. Luckily, on the one hand, we're in different confederations so it's not really our problem anyway, and on the other, it seems like the incompetence of the American federation is just too big. Wtf are they doing, the US has never been amazing, but I feel like during the Klinsmann years they were way way way better than now.
The people in charge of the NBA, it's not in charge of football. It's the people that don't pay much attention to it, the thing about the US it's they look competitive, but they're not well organized, with more people interested on it, they'd have a bigger talent pool. Other countries are going through the same, in Conmebol, currently Brasil, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and Peru have problems of organization and mismanagement.
Venezuela seems to have figured it out, after years of barely getting 4 points or so in Qualification. Brasil used to be within the top 2, now losing matches they wouldn't in the past and they're currently middle of the table, Paraguay used to be a tough opponent, now it's not the case. Peru used to be middle of the table.
Bolivia would be an interesting case, in the late 80s and all 90s, they not only had their best generation ever, motivated to win, also there was a good organization, Bolivia almost qualified to 1990 WC, they didn't just for goal difference. Qualified to 1994, Runner-ups in 1997 Copa America, they were more of a threat and competitive till around 2006. Then it gradually went lower and lower.
As far as I know, there's bad internal organization and those in charge only see it as a business, so making money for themselves it's their priority and you see it on the Bolivian players these days, they're not even motivated to play nor win.
You need not only good players and coaches, also the management getting and putting in charge to those that'd help to get the results. On the comments you'll read how they're criticizing the coach staff and how the US manage things with staff.

US Soccer will never have the home-grown talent other top nations will have because its top athletic talent is drawn to football, baseball, and basketball. It's similar to Ireland in that there's considerable athletic talent in Gaelic sports like hurling and and gaelic football... throw in some rugby and its not enough to keep the Irish Soccer program top tier.
That's just how it's going to be. Nearly every top tier national team has soccer as the top tier attraction... little else draws from the national pool of talent.
The US will need to understand that cracking that top 20 ranking year over year is just too much to ask.

This is a coach that does not want to hold himself accountable for performances. I think there are some major changes that need to take affect. Anyone who’s not working for the women’s team and that works for the men’s team needs to step down and new people need to come in and actually think about who they hire as a coach. Nepotism should not be involved. Thank you for telling the truth about this federation and the reputation of this team. What I don’t understand is why the women’s team has everything they could possibly want including an amazing coach. The women’s players play very well with their clubs and for the United States. The men’s players on the other hand, do not play well at all in the United States, but play very well for their clubs. This is because of a coach That does the same tactics every single game. He needs to change his tactics and a new coach needs to come in, but knowing the federation, I hate to say this, but it won’t happen.
