To my ear the Neumann 87 sounds a lot more warm it has more character the ml1 is more open sounding closer to the u87 Ai in my opinion still a good choice for your budget. I was wondering if you ever had a chance to try the Stam audio 87t a producer friend of mine has one and he let me borrow it for a session and I was impressed it sounds like a cross between a Sony c-800g and a u87 it has a modern sound but with the character of a u87 it has a tube in its circuit and it gives it a nice open top end sound with some warmth if you get a chance, you should try one anyway good to see you back. If you can listen to your performance without watching the screen, and you dont realize that something happens suddently in some phrases but not in others, ( cause theres clips from each microphone ) and you can even feel changes, and you feel the song like an entire take, that is what i think it happens. then. you have a big point to take into consideration
The Vintage U87 sounds so incredible and classic and is hard to beat. The Slate ML-1 sounds good too. But it doesn´t come near the sound of the U87 which sits perfectly in the mix.

sold ML-1 after using it about a year. Great microphone system but I want more character when I am recording vocalists.

that u87 sound so smooth . the Neumann sound better when you looking at the video but if u just listing I can't tell the difference .
Yeah, I think this is the closest emulation I've heard from the ML-1. Less harmonic content in a U87 so it might be a bit easier to model.

The Neumann highs sounded better to me.
The ML-1 seems to handle transient a bit differently but they're scary close!
