Can I just say this? When I was taking English in university, our Korean lecturer actually confused with our accents, saying why we have American accent when we're studying British English. I just feel like we're more influenced with American accent because of the mass media mixed with our own accent rooted from our mother tongues. Sorry it's a little unrelated haha.

True. Although I hate that being true because some of us have the accent naturally due to living overseas or just fully influenced by the American or British television growing up. I have an American accent but I'm not rich. I speak that way because I was fully influenced by American television and music growing up. I barely saw Malaysian shows or even listened to music by Malaysian artist. Only when I was around 13 I started knowing Malaysian artist and movies and shows. Even now, my accent is still there. I think accents come from how heavily influenced you are in a culture.
Well i might be influenced by British accent due to my mum always watched Hallmark Channel in astro in the old days so hahaha yeah got that bit of brits in my accent... And me bruv at the workplace was like wtf mate hahaha
This is one of those people who always made me cringe lol. Student never went oversea before, speaking (or rather forcing) an "English accent" to look "smart" while a lecturer who studied years in UK, still retaining her Manglish accent. True story.
no no it's not right or wrong, it's about improving your grammar first before doing an accent. You see, there's nothing wrong with Manglish, it's actually one of the World Englishes. The problem here is that the student insisted on using the stereotyped, posh English of the old days, and I know for a fact that even most native Brits don't even speak like that anymore. So, it's better to improve your grammar and vocabulary first :)
Well, respect is a subjective matter and it depends on the individual itself imo. Eg, some English accents are looked down upon even at their own country since that certain accent may belong to the lower class majorities. And pronunciation isn't actually a technical process when we're talking about World Englishes, mainly due to the interference of native language that may accentuates when conversing in English. Arguably wrong in the matter of opinion, but not in linguistic terms.

I don't really fake my accent.. However, I tend to switch my accent to proper Chinese when I speak to someone form China or Taiwan.. Same thing applies when I speak to foreigners.. I hope they understand our conversation so I tend to speak appropriate English with them..

OK, I'm somewhere in between the duos. Born & raised in Malaysia, but being from a Bangladeshi family, and having travelled around the world, my accent is always all over the place. And NOBODY can agree on where it comes from. Malaysians assume my accent is British or American. Brits and Australians think it's Sri Lankan or Fijian or "vague South Asian country". Americans think it's either Mexican (?!), British, or Indian, or in one case someone asked me why I "talked like a little kid". And, like Tiffany, different people bring out different accents. I definitely sound way more Malaysian when I'm around family (well then the Bengali seeps through too) or my Malaysian or Singaporean friends. Trying to do it on command around my more Western or non-MY friends gets difficult. I lived in Australia for some years and am now based in the US. The accent thing gets EVEN WEIRDER. People from both countries claim they can hear the accent of the other country in my voice, but they only say that when I tell them I live(d) there. (Otherwise they're super blur on "why is your accent so FOREIGN"). Otherwise they're trying to pin in on EVERY OTHER COUNTRY POSSIBLE, whether in Africa or Latin America or Asia... ...except they NEVER believe "Malaysia". "You don't sound Malaysian". Ya, idiot, as if you've ever heard a Malaysian before! You wouldn't even have heard of the country if it wasn't for Malaysia Airlines! I'm not trying to put on a foreign accent, definitely not to impress people (nobody believes I'm from where I say I am anyway). But people accuse me of doing so, because I don't match their assumption, and they try to make it my fault that their assumptions are broken. (And it's ALWAYS the people who claim that they "don't have an accent" that have the strongest accents ever!) I HATE the question "Where is your accent from" (and similarly, "Where are you from" and "Where is your name from") because they don't actually care who I am or what my answer is. They just want to play a guessing game (I've had two people tell me explicitly that). Nama saya pun diorang tak tanya. (and it sucks that I feel like I have to write something in Malay to prove my Malaysian cred.) So ya, hit me lah if you want. Only if I get to hit you back for being so nosy about my accent in the first place.
I feel this struggle so much!!! I'm Malaysian and lived overseas my whole life; English was my first language and Spanish was my second. When i go back home to Malaysia people think I'm a foreigner or that I'm faking my accent (which is vaguely American but mostly indistinguishable). Im always made fun of for the way i speak, from school days until now, and i'm already in my late twenties. I dont think i have an accent, it's just the way i speak. (I just watched way too much tv growing up). Apparently some people seem to have a problem with it. I will have my Malaysian English accent when I'm talking to people who find English difficult when speaking. One time one of my classmate who always speak in English came and talk to me. She stare at me when I speak in a total 180° change. I have another one. So one of my Indian classmate thought I don't know English and ask me to take a 'chair' and speak the words longerrr as if I can't understand him. I pretend to look at him like I was confused and only replier with an 'okay'. We barely knew each other bc everyone in our year were to change new classes. So when we have our first exam and I got a 95%, the boy who talked to me have his eyes budge out like he can't even believe it.
i was born in malaysia but lived in Australia for about 4 years and I just caught up with the australian accent there. But I can change my Australian accent into A british accent, it doesn't really have a difference. I can also talk with an American accent but there are some words that I accidentally pronounce in a british accent, plus I tend to speak faster.
I understand perfectly how u feel cuz i used to live in england for a few years but i got influenced by american tv shows when i moved back to malaysia and now i speak with a mix of british and american accent so people often mistaken that i used to live in US. Don't judge a book by its cover. Sometimes It's not someone is faking any one of the accents, but the way to get people especially native speakers to have a clearer image of what we are talking about is to rise the tone in the words, which you want to emphasise on.
I am from the UK and I had a British friend that went to America for 1 month and then came back with American accent... No kidding. Ofcourse it was fake but he kept it like for a whole year!

I sound British. I can't help it, it's not something I pretend to do - I just sound British -- or Scottish (Quite possibly a tad Irish) when I'm pissed. I shall blame that on the endless marathon of Harry Potter when I was younger and the Scottish bit -- God knows where I pick that up - Honestly, it's not fun - people kept thinking either I was born and raise in England or I've gone to school there. Nope, KL born and breed, never went to England before. I'm white and I was born and raised in London. I've lived in Singapore for a few years now, and here's what I think about people who think they have somehow acquired either American or British accents without prior training or living (for a long time) in England or the US, you don't fool us, we see right through it. Now I'm not racist, my wife is Singaporean and I have three kids, all of whom are bi-accented, so I know for a fact that it's possible, it's just that people who claim that they have an "angmoh" accent usually don't. Since I married my wife, she has been to regular lessons from a dialect coach, and honestly, I can hardly notice her Singaporean accent when she puts on her English accent, although she doesn't because we both think it's weird. Learning an accent takes years, many years, and I've heard people like LKY speak, and they speak very good English, but Singaporeans don't seem to understand that he's not speaking in an "angmoh" accent, just the Singaporean accent without the characteristic cadences and with proper grammar. So please people, before you humiliate yourself, please at least state how you got the accent... Anyone who thinks I'm not in a position to say these, well don't, because I'm a proud Singaporean. And P.S None of the accents in the video were British or American... If you want to do it, learn it, otherwise don't mock it. Respect our culture as much as I respect Singapore please.

In Malaysia when someone is trying to speak in proper English most locals would always/straight away assume he/she is speaking in a British/American "slang" (in local context "slang" always mean accent)! however, there're so many types of English accents in the world it isn't easy to fake them. some mocking just did this badly. I'm a self taught American English speaker. i've started a year ago listening to online tutorial/natural speech thus helping me a lot in trying to get a grasp of American English n knowing the differences of British/American english. The pronunciation, stressed & unstressed, rhythm, contractions & reductions etc really takes time to learn unless you're moving to a native English speaking country that would probably improve your speaking skills tremendously.

I'm a mixed race Malaysian who adopts an accent. I don't think I'm faking it because it comes naturally. Unless under certain circumstances where I have to use Manglish for conveying a message for Malaysians who are not very articulate or fluent in English, I can say that my mental and verbal language comes with an accent. I guess it's also probably I adopt them from the Western movies and TV shows, you can also say that I'm kinda "westernized." There's really nothing to be ashamed of if you speak with an accent. It doesn't make you any less of a Malaysian. Why do we care so much about what other people think of us?

Some people absorbs accents from their surroundings or lifestyle (watching WAYYYY TOO MUCH SHOWS, MOVIES, PROGRAMS, etc) without even thinking. Some may do it for low self-esteem, but not in all cases. The problem is when there are people who feels that they just KNOW it in their guts when other people are pulling some accents just to impress them or to feel slightly superior when the reality they don’t know shit about the real reason. When the ACTUAL deal, the person may have different background or have some difficulties with the accent that he or she prefers. If it is the case of the low self-esteem, I think it’s a bit immature to call people out. Everyone's a wannabe of something once upon a time in their life even if it’s not accent. If you managed to get over yours. They will too, eventually.
I agree. I have lived in the US for the past 4 years and have adopted an accent. I don't use lahs, mahs etc anymore and I'm quite proud of that actually. Since I got back, people just won't let me see the end of it about having an "accent" and they'll continuously annoy me by asking me to say things with a Malaysian accent. Malaysians are sometimes too judgmental for their own good. When you live overseas you'll learn that having your Malaysian accent will not only frustrate the locals talking to you who don't understand why the hell you need to end each sentence with lahs, mahs and ahs but yourself as well when you have to keep on explaining to them what it means. I also agree with you that we absorb this from our surrounding culture be it where we live or what we see and hear like in tv and movies for example. I grew up with American tv and films all my life. Somehow they just want to put you in a box for what they already think you should behave..they're thinking its something that you could just turn on and off..thats not how subconscious works! I'm sure in your case you can't even help it anymore since you had surrounded yourself with the new accent for 4 years..I hate it when we have to constantly monitor how we sounds like to our closest friends..most of the time we just want to be free..we absorb whatever we hear subconsciously.. Basically, an international school by the government (if that makes any sense). During my first year there, I was told I had an accent that they couldn't quite pick out. I felt embarrassed because I started to notice how weird I sounded. It's not that I don't like the Malaysian accent (hell, I grew up with it), but when your friends all have an American accent, you just gotta fit in. By the end of my second year, I had completely stopped using 'lahs', etc and even adopted an American accent. When I visited my friends in Malaysia, the look on their faces were priceless 😁
This is agitating! No one understands this feeling, unless you don't sound like a typical Malaysian. Just because I'm Chinese Malaysian, people expect me to have a typical Chinese accent!? The typical chinese would go like "Why ah? U ah? Got like the Australian slang one!?" What do you mean I have an Australian accent? People think that I'm faking or imitating Aussies! The thing is I don't have an accent nor an English wannabe. I admit that I do pronounce some words as Australian, like mate as 'mite' and a few words emphasising the vowel 'a' in 'ae'. I don't understand why can't malaysians understand! Plus British is not an accent! Whenever my friends introduce me to someone they go like what's with his accent? They jokingly says that I'm English or Australian. One Brit ask me whether if I'm English and I once got called by the school's principal asking if I studied abroad! In Malaysia,the American or English accent are considered 'rich people's language' so we viewed normal people doing those sorts of accents as stuck up and arrogant.
True. Although I hate that being true because some of us have the accent naturally due to living overseas or just fully influenced by the American or British television growing up. I have an American accent but I'm not rich. I speak that way because I was fully influenced by American television and music growing up. I barely saw Malaysian shows or even listened to music by Malaysian artist. Only when I was around 13 I started knowing Malaysian artist and movies and shows. Even now, my accent is still there. I think accents come from how heavily influenced you are in a culture.

This is one of those people who always made me cringe lol. Student never went oversea before, speaking (or rather forcing) an "English accent" to look "smart" while a lecturer who studied years in UK, still retaining her Manglish accent. True story.

no no it's not right or wrong, it's about improving your grammar first before doing an accent. You see, there's nothing wrong with Manglish, it's actually one of the World Englishes. The problem here is that the student insisted on using the stereotyped, posh English of the old days, and I know for a fact that even most native Brits don't even speak like that anymore. So, it's better to improve your grammar and vocabulary first :)

Well, respect is a subjective matter and it depends on the individual itself imo. Eg, some English accents are looked down upon even at their own country since that certain accent may belong to the lower class majorities.
And pronunciation isn't actually a technical process when we're talking about World Englishes, mainly due to the interference of native language that may accentuates when conversing in English. Arguably wrong in the matter of opinion, but not in linguistic terms.

I don't really fake my accent.. However, I tend to switch my accent to proper Chinese when I speak to someone form China or Taiwan.. Same thing applies when I speak to foreigners.. I hope they understand our conversation so I tend to speak appropriate English with them..

OK, I'm somewhere in between the duos.
Born & raised in Malaysia, but being from a Bangladeshi family, and having travelled around the world, my accent is always all over the place. And NOBODY can agree on where it comes from.
Malaysians assume my accent is British or American.
Brits and Australians think it's Sri Lankan or Fijian or "vague South Asian country".
Americans think it's either Mexican (?!), British, or Indian, or in one case someone asked me why I "talked like a little kid".
And, like Tiffany, different people bring out different accents. I definitely sound way more Malaysian when I'm around family (well then the Bengali seeps through too) or my Malaysian or Singaporean friends. Trying to do it on command around my more Western or non-MY friends gets difficult.
I lived in Australia for some years and am now based in the US. The accent thing gets EVEN WEIRDER. People from both countries claim they can hear the accent of the other country in my voice, but they only say that when I tell them I live(d) there. (Otherwise they're super blur on "why is your accent so FOREIGN"). Otherwise they're trying to pin in on EVERY OTHER COUNTRY POSSIBLE, whether in Africa or Latin America or Asia...
...except they NEVER believe "Malaysia".

I'm not trying to put on a foreign accent, definitely not to impress people (nobody believes I'm from where I say I am anyway). But people accuse me of doing so, because I don't match their assumption, and they try to make it my fault that their assumptions are broken. (And it's ALWAYS the people who claim that they "don't have an accent" that have the strongest accents ever!)
I HATE the question "Where is your accent from" (and similarly, "Where are you from" and "Where is your name from") because they don't actually care who I am or what my answer is. They just want to play a guessing game (I've had two people tell me explicitly that). Nama saya pun diorang tak tanya. (and it sucks that I feel like I have to write something in Malay to prove my Malaysian cred.)

I feel this struggle so much!!! I'm Malaysian and lived overseas my whole life; English was my first language and Spanish was my second. When i go back home to Malaysia people think I'm a foreigner or that I'm faking my accent (which is vaguely American but mostly indistinguishable).

Im always made fun of for the way i speak, from school days until now, and i'm already in my late twenties. I dont think i have an accent, it's just the way i speak. (I just watched way too much tv growing up). Apparently some people seem to have a problem with it. Why cant we all speak the way we're comfortable speaking instead of bashing others for doing things differently? If they had shown phua chu kang when i was little, i wouldnt be commenting this.

I will have my Malaysian English accent when I'm talking to people who find English difficult when speaking. One time one of my classmate who always speak in English came and talk to me. She stare at me when I speak in a total 180° change.
I have another one. So one of my Indian classmate thought I don't know English and ask me to take a 'chair' and speak the words longerrr as if I can't understand him. I pretend to look at him like I was confused and only replier with an 'okay'. We barely knew each other bc everyone in our year were to change new classes. So when we have our first exam and I got a 95%, the boy who talked to me have his eyes budge out like he can't even believe it.
i was born in malaysia but lived in Australia for about 4 years and I just caught up with the australian accent there. But I can change my Australian accent into A british accent, it doesn't really have a difference. I can also talk with an American accent but there are some words that I accidentally pronounce in a british accent, plus I tend to speak faster.

I understand perfectly how u feel cuz i used to live in england for a few years but i got influenced by american tv shows when i moved back to malaysia and now i speak with a mix of british and american accent so people often mistaken that i used to live in US. Don't judge a book by its cover. Sometimes It's not someone is faking any one of the accents, but the way to get people especially native speakers to have a clearer image of what we are talking about is to rise the tone in the words, which you want to emphasise on.
I am from the UK and I had a British friend that went to America for 1 month and then came back with American accent... No kidding. Ofcourse it was fake but he kept it like for a whole year!

I sound British. I can't help it, it's not something I pretend to do - I just sound British -- or Scottish (Quite possibly a tad Irish) when I'm pissed. I shall blame that on the endless marathon of Harry Potter when I was younger and the Scottish bit -- God knows where I pick that up - Honestly, it's not fun - people kept thinking either I was born and raise in England or I've gone to school there. Nope, KL born and breed, never went to England before. I think it could happen to people who were exposed to certain shows when they were younger or as they startered to learn the language - You sorta just... Store it in your memory bank or something. I'm white and I was born and raised in London. I've lived in Singapore for a few years now, and here's what I think about people who think they have somehow acquired either American or British accents without prior training or living (for a long time) in England or the US, you don't fool us, we see right through it. Now I'm not racist, my wife is Singaporean and I have three kids, all of whom are bi-accented, so I know for a fact that it's possible, it's just that people who claim that they have an "angmoh" accent usually don't. Since I married my wife, she has been to regular lessons from a dialect coach, and honestly, I can hardly notice her Singaporean accent when she puts on her English accent, although she doesn't because we both think it's weird. Learning an accent takes years, many years, and I've heard people like LKY speak, and they speak very good English, but Singaporeans don't seem to understand that he's not speaking in an "angmoh" accent, just the Singaporean accent without the characteristic cadences and with proper grammar. So please people, before you humiliate yourself, please at least state how you got the accent... Anyone who thinks I'm not in a position to say these, well don't, because I'm a proud Singaporean. And P.S None of the accents in the video were British or American... If you want to do it, learn it, otherwise don't mock it. Respect our culture as much as I respect Singapore please.

In Malaysia when someone is trying to speak in proper English most locals would always/straight away assume he/she is speaking in a British/American "slang" (in local context "slang" always mean accent)! however, there're so many types of English accents in the world it isn't easy to fake them. some mocking just did this badly. I'm a self taught American English speaker. i've started a year ago listening to online tutorial/natural speech thus helping me a lot in trying to get a grasp of American English n knowing the differences of British/American english. The pronunciation, stressed & unstressed, rhythm, contractions & reductions etc really takes time to learn unless you're moving to a native English speaking country that would probably improve your speaking skills tremendously.

I'm a mixed race Malaysian who adopts an accent. I don't think I'm faking it because it comes naturally. Unless under certain circumstances where I have to use Manglish for conveying a message for Malaysians who are not very articulate or fluent in English, I can say that my mental and verbal language comes with an accent. I guess it's also probably I adopt them from the Western movies and TV shows, you can also say that I'm kinda "westernized."
There's really nothing to be ashamed of if you speak with an accent. It doesn't make you any less of a Malaysian. Why do we care so much about what other people think of us?

my friend always ask me why my english accents sound american, but what i can do, it just turn out that way after listening, watching english musics and movie.. it's not a crime to speak proper english.. ^_^
Ikr.Being a Kuchingite for almost like what 11 years then moving to KL.My friend we're like "ey Mat Salleh".It's pretty common to hear sarawakian kids having a English or an American accent when talking in English.
totally understand you. SInce i like English, i always mix up speaking Malay and English, and my friends like " wooo, cakap mat saleh " i was like, this kind of people is really close minded.

Accents are just something you kind of use to relate to the person of the country. Of course, if executed well, it will help in communication.
But like if the person kind of knows you from back then, is it so hard to switch it back?

I would like to see a video of Malaysians speaking in Malaysian slang in Western countries. It would be fun to see if they can understand and how they would react to a group of Malaysians' conversation. XD
Some people absorbs accents from their surroundings or lifestyle (watching WAYYYY TOO MUCH SHOWS, MOVIES, PROGRAMS, etc) without even thinking. Some may do it for low self-esteem, but not in all cases. The problem is when there are people who feels that they just KNOW it in their guts when other people are pulling some accents just to impress them or to feel slightly superior when the reality they don’t know shit about the real reason. When the ACTUAL deal, the person may have different background or have some difficulties with the accent that he or she prefers. If it is the case of the low self-esteem, I think it’s a bit immature to call people out. Everyone's a wannabe of something once upon a time in their life even if it’s not accent. If you managed to get over yours. They will too, eventually.
I agree. I have lived in the US for the past 4 years and have adopted an accent. I don't use lahs, mahs etc anymore and I'm quite proud of that actually. Since I got back, people just won't let me see the end of it about having an "accent" and they'll continuously annoy me by asking me to say things with a Malaysian accent. Malaysians are sometimes too judgmental for their own good. When you live overseas you'll learn that having your Malaysian accent will not only frustrate the locals talking to you who don't understand why the hell you need to end each sentence with lahs, mahs and ahs but yourself as well when you have to keep on explaining to them what it means. I also agree with you that we absorb this from our surrounding culture be it where we live or what we see and hear like in tv and movies for example. I grew up with American tv and films all my life. I had American friends while living abroad. Understandably this influences how I speak. It is inevitable.
Yeah I get what you mean. Somehow they just want to put you in a box for what they already think you should behave..they're thinking its something that you could just turn on and off..thats not how subconscious works! I'm sure in your case you can't even help it anymore since you had surrounded yourself with the new accent for 4 years..I hate it when we have to constantly monitor how we sounds like to our closest friends..most of the time we just want to be free..we absorb whatever we hear subconsciously..
I can't even speak Manglish that well..I mean I could try..but yeah I felt so weird whenever I do.. I fake it pretty bad LOL (like people would feel obligated to pat me on the back for trying too hard bad XD) mainly because I don't hangout with people who speaks it very much (and I don't hangout with people just for the sake of learning accent)..so I tend to absorb more of my way of English speaking from my addicting tv shows or whatever that I watched on the web!. but I try to fake my Manglish sometimes if it means so much to them (since I don't really care). or when I felt even more like I don't care. I'd be like :/ Deal with it bro! Sorry if this hurts your soul. I can't help you anymore.
+ToraydoBull Yea, I faced the same thing as you. I moved to Hong Kong when I was 14, and studied in a go for ethnic minorities. Basically, an international school by the government (if that makes any sense). During my first year there, I was told I had an accent that they couldn't quite pick out. I felt embarrassed because I started to notice how weird I sounded. It's not that I don't like the Malaysian accent (hell, I grew up with it), but when your friends all have an American accent, you just gotta fit in. By the end of my second year, I had completely stopped using 'lahs', etc and even adopted an American accent. When I visited my friends in Malaysia, the look on their faces were priceless 😁

This is agitating! No one understands this feeling, unless you don't sound like a typical Malaysian. Just because I'm Chinese Malaysian, people expect me to have a typical Chinese accent!?
The typical chinese would go like "Why ah? U ah? Got like the Australian slang one!?" What do you mean I have an Australian accent? People think that I'm faking or imitating Aussies!
The thing is I don't have an accent nor an English wannabe. I admit that I do pronounce some words as Australian, like mate as 'mite' and a few words emphasising the vowel 'a' in 'ae'.
I don't understand why can't malaysians understand! Plus British is not an accent! Whenever my friends introduce me to someone they go like what's with his accent? They jokingly says that I'm English or Australian. One Brit ask me whether if I'm English and I once got called by the school's principal asking if I studied abroad! Hates goes like what's with the British accent you British wannabe! I always tell them "British is not an accent and this is not one of any of the English accents, but Malaysian! I was born in Greater London, that's just it!" But I'm not , I just joke with them.
it's amazing that Singapore and Malaysian English have the same grammar. Though I must say that those with strong Singaporean/Malaysian accents sound different. LOL the thai and indian accents were amazing.
