Once the grafts take, what do you do with the top of the whips? Do you cut them off right at the top of the graft? Do they heal over well and add even thickness to the truck or do you have to shave and shape them back down?

Hey Brian, I cut the whips back and leave about a 1/8" for dieback.I only do this after the whips have fused with the base.

Hey Alan! I would say 8 out of 10 take. The success of the grafts greatly depend on timing and how clean you make the cuts.
Oh. I just finished a hand-forged grafting knife like that, made from antique wrought-iron and a carbon steel weed whacker blade piece...
