Thanks so much Mike great lesson, how is your Bonsai world doing? Any Chance on Doing a Video in your Bonsai Nursery? Happy Holidays. Greg of Ohio
Hi Greg, we're going to be doing a Q + A shortly here for Oscar again, a Facebook Live thing---
Can you link a website where to buy the buddy tape and the blue thing you use at the end please ?
I think Jonas of Bonsai Tonight sells it: store.bonsaitonight.com/products/buddy-tape-for-grafting?_pos=1&_sid=45f7d2e1c&_ss=r
The nursery tape can be found at any nursery, or online, green, clear--- get the 1/2" / 1cm size.
This is fairly recent thank you
Am I alright to graft pine foliage in the winter?
Yes that is the right time of year to do it, near the end of the dormant season. Once the bud starts swelling your chances go down.
When do you unwrap the budding tape from the graft and from the leaves.
Good question, I should have mentioned---if you're using buddy tape or parafilm, there's no need to unwrap. It breaks down in the sun, and as the scion grows it pushes through. The blue nursery tape should be removed in a year or so though, that doesn't break down.
@@michaelhagedorn6772 michael which is the best season for this ? is it spring?
like.👍👍
Hi Michael, many thanks for guiding us on to bonsai path. I'm a little bit lost for the scion grafting period. I was told and I have seen a you tube video (Bonsai Artisans : Fred Miyahara Bonsai Grafting) where they says the best period for scion grafting junipers is between january and february ( but early summer, in may or june for approach graft). Could you help me to get a clear advice please. Thanks
Hi, yes, good question---much of this has to do with locale. So Fred is completely correct in timing for his area (he's a thousand times better grafter than I am by the way). I live in a cooler area and so the grafting is a bit later for juniper. So if you live in a Mediterranean climate, go with Fred's advice. If you live in a Tokyo, Japan climate, then graft a bit later in the spring. But in general, there's a fairly wide window for juniper; much less so for pine. Hope that helps!
@@michaelhagedorn6772 Thanks Michael for lighting my vision, I'm not living near Meditrranee but in Britanny just close to the sea, so negative Celsius temperature are quite rare during winter ( average T°c during winter is 8 to 10) and spring for japanese maples is coming at the end of february or beginning of march. So it may match with Michael area's climate,no? Thanks again for your help
Sorry, I wouldn't like to say "Michael's climate " but " Fred's climate", sorry for the mistake
@@guillaumecossais6566 Hi Guillaume, yes, you seem pretty warm there, and there should be a pretty good juniper grafting period in late March or early April for you. The key is the juniper should already be growing a bit. (For pine we want it dormant.) The junipers in coastal California almost seem not to stop growing. So if that is the case, then maybe early March is my guess. In reality I find juniper grafting to have a wide calendar of possibility. Just be sure it's in the active season, and not too late in the year.
What is the best time to do this process? Thank you
around February - a bit sooner or later depending your local climate :)
He said during the growing season so whenever that is for your bonsai
For juniper a month or two into the growing season is good, though some good results can even come in early summer.

Is there a reason why you didn't laminate the cut into the main branch? The choice of that hat calls into question decision making tho, hahah, I'm kidding.
Hi this is Michael, it's certainly possible to graft onto the main branch or even trunk, but if it's as thick as this one is your success rate might go down a bit. Grafting onto a branch that is not much bigger than the scion itself will prove a better bet for success.
