some of what he does reminds me of Steve Gadd's half time beat that would interweave paradiddles and double stroke rolls, but Gilmore does more different subdivisions and starting odd rhythm figures on upbeats
He was already in another galaxy but each time he travels a few hundred light years further. When one would program to compress the evolution of a musical instruments ability over decades of musical history in different styles in a performance of 5 minutes, the computer would probably crash after the operation “insert Marcus Gilmore rhythms”.
@@morbidmanmusic yea I usually have my bassdrum wife open tuned high but his sounds more punchy. Whereas mine sounds kind of “boingy” Thanks for the tip tho!
This cat gets it. The true 'power' in the rhythms we drummers play, is in the rests, not the notes, what? It's true. Tonight, go outside and look up, see all the millions of stars, 'space' as we know it, is 99.9999999% empty space, let that sink in.
@@tandrum719 Bass drum hoop has a trigger for the clicky sonar sounds, Marcus is using the rhythm of that and implying different subdivisions. 2nd Floor tom has a trigger for a chord sequence.
different regions of the drum are mapped to trigger different sounds and textures, so drummerslams can play the backing track like it's an instrument. where's my sticker?
Great sounding bop kit! The trend of the all maple compact kits are too punchy and bright to my ears. They definitely have their great points but jazz needs warmth.
The main ride is a 22" old Turkish K Zildjian. Secondary ride is a 20" Zildjian (don't know the specifics), 18" main Hi Hats then small bell Hi Hats as his secondary (played with left heel).
Everyo e who cant play like him : I felt it was just video of marcus warming up playing randomised beats and all..not a solo? So complex his expression, and sure he has amazing chops, feel and swing. however for me personally, not that anyone cares or asked for my unknowledgable opinion. But I'd rather listen to cats like, Steve gadd, Jeff porcaro groove and shuffle over this man's cosmic, interdimensional playing, Credit to him though man's gotta a different type of feel.
he's one of those musicians who changes the world everytime he touches the instrument
Different breed of drummer right there.
The evolution of what it sounds to go beyond the chops
Mark of an expert drummer is when I cannot intellectually understand it but I feel it
Man I really like this drummer. He's really smooth. Doing him. He's not a carbon copy of everybody else
I get more brain freeze from Marcus than any other drummer. Dude is in another galaxy
Even Kendrick Scott.. André Ceccarelli.. Lee Pearson...Damien Schmitt...Jimmy McBride.. Ludwig Alfonso...Amir bressler...Teddy Campbell..Mark Guiliana, Nate Smith...Éric Harland...,Jonathan Pinson... Will Kennedy..Carter Beaufort...Francesco de mela...Francesco de Rubeis...Vinnie Colaiuta...Dave Weckl...Horacio Hernandez...Chris Coleman...Eric Moore...Steve Gadd...Steve Smith...Simon Philipps...Jonathan Blake...Owen Ulysse jr...
I get brain freeze from Marcus playing but even more from Kendrick Scott playing.
@@lieutenantcolumbo114 Thank you for listing all of my heroes haha.
@@dominikn19 🤣 One common point dear Friend 🙂
This is the craziest thing I've ever seen. Awesome!
I won't mention his name here, but a well known jazz drummer said to me "Marcus is the reason why everybody thrives to be second."
Wow, so exciting! Grandchild of Roy Haynes as I know. Has a flow like very few.
Soooooo good 👍🏼 musical , expressive , different

Incredible!
Thanks for sharing..
amazing.
Nice set
Beautiful
Es el mejor, el campeón, el rey, el número uno.
lol the train im on is blending in with the ambience in the backing track
this is incredible! yoo
He is not from another Galaxy, in fact he is the reason this Galaxy was created.
Ah.....why is the Yamaha logo sideways on the front head?
He’s using Dave Throckmorton’s kit. Dave is just hip like that. Look him up sometime.
cymbals ???
How do I get my bassdrum to sound like this?
full heads, no hole, pitched higher, no muffling (mostly) 20 or 18" drum. Think of it as a melodic tom with a pedal.
@@morbidmanmusic yea I usually have my bassdrum wife open tuned high but his sounds more punchy. Whereas mine sounds kind of “boingy” Thanks for the tip tho!
the first step is make sure the logo is turned 45°

It's like Sun Ra (rip) said Space is the Place
So is every atom of which everything is constructed.
thought i was the only person who understood this tempo.
this is like mono/poly that forest song
im here
First one to identify what the track’s doing and why that’s revolutionary gets a sticker
hello according to your experience Marcus when he is playing as in this video he knows what he intentionally plays, or sudden thanks

can you tell us what it is? i think it has something to do with the click sound after he hits bass drum hoops.

Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a stage custom birch bop kit?
Maple Custom

What the heck was that for. Not sure what he is trying to teach us.
Deepest killer
Do you know what cymbals Marcus is using in these videos?

Rich Zabinski Jazz Thank you so much! And 18” hats?? Geeeeeeeez.
@@chrispysthename wait, 18" hats, that can't be right. I'm thinking maybe they were 15".
Rich Zabinski Jazz honestly I think you’re right. I’m pretty sure they are Keropes. They were huge. At least 16”
@@richzabinskijazz5232 Honestly, after seeing a video of him playing with 22” hats, I’m not surprised anymore haha
never buy used cymbals from marcus gilmore. the keyholing must be insane! one of the best drummer right now though

Tiny arms they called him
Too long and a bit boring. Drum solos 2 mins top, otherwise you loose audience.
Why are you watching a 7 and a half minute drum clinic solo, then?
What a insipid comment
Actually too short for us...
Your oddness is heartbreaking...😢
You don’t get it. It’s ok though. Maybe eventually you will
