Wow just wow ..... Drumming as an art and sport have and continue to progress to sights unseen. I'm just in awe at the raw natural talent that seems to raise the bar year after year. Not only with chops but musicality as well. Just WOW !
I'm glad I came across this video, I see some folks trying to compare drummers, to this cat that cat, for me that's impossible! Now what I will do is be thankful of the ones I've been blessed to hear and shall I say even know about there are so many great's most I couldn't even name but had the pleasure of hearing. These are just a few of the names I could think of at this time. Billy Cobham, Harvey Mason, Mike Clark, Art Blakely, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Ben Riley, and so on and so on! All I could say good looking out young buck(MG). May Yahuwah continue to bless!
S Harrell Yes! he said that..but, I think he was stating that because he was old school!! The logical way to play the drumset is matched grip!! I just think he resented many of the “Rock” players because they refused to play traditional grip!! When he said that in the early eighties he was of the opinion that many players dumbed down their playing with stick twirling & theatrics, instead of technique!!!
Darryl took me to watch his uncle Roy play a few years back and hopefully we'll come check you out when you play back in Boston again. 👍 Ps, someone else commented on it but I have to ask again. What kind of hi hats are those? They sound unbelievable!
I think it's doubles but inverted and in triplets (the timing is probably "crushed" as well so the notes are closer together). r l l r r L L The capital Ls are accented notes and to me, the phrase is a bit awkward. But it sounds cool and it's a cool idea. You may want to try the Steve Gadd way first. r l l r r L R
tiluriso it looks to me like Carlitos del Puerto on bass, Steve Davis on trombone (who happens to be a friend of mine, such a great guy), and I’m not sure about the rest. Maybe Steve Wilson on Sax?
At toys r us dis bro brings joy no body better trust me true stories love him period when I grow up I want to be just like him I’m 61 now my father uncle granddad know his pop papa pa pop mr Boston & from chicky sonny Kenny Tony Lenny phiilly joe pa pa Joe AD Max etc etc this cat got it no joke I would like to just shake his hands I’ve done many his would become a dream come true seriously sorry grandfather can’t touch this dude 😂
MAN I have to say Marcus Gilmore is my new favorite drummer. His control and dynamics especially on the snare are really fun to watch!!!
RIP to one of the greatest pianist of all time!! such a loss!! What an honor Marcus got to trade riffs with this impressive man. Outstanding improv
This man could play anything he wants to. His complete freedom of expression is just incredible

His playing is unreal. I can't even start to transcribe it, no chance. So much stuff but still sooo musical. Love it!!!
Rip master Corea. Thanks for all the music you brought to life
This solo is amazing on the fact that he is using "less" to get more out of the solo in a groovy way... I love his playing
Remember Buddy Rich insisting you "can't get around" the set with match grip? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Exhibit A.
Wow, I didn't know Buddy claimed that. He was clearly wrong.
Yeah, I think so too. Here's one of the times he said it. ua-cam.com/video/v0V4Aqs2D48/v-deo.html
Yeah Ronald Bruner jr as well. Talk about getting around the kick. His solos on planetary prince are chop city
Whenever I read that quote, I think of this: ua-cam.com/video/PMy-NivwrJA/v-deo.html

Brother...I have watched this video a million times, and will probably watch it another million. It's pure genius! 🎧🎶🎹👍🖤
That snare is massive. Sounds killer
Hes playing straight Adowa rhythm of the Ashanti people from Ghana.
woooo
Thanks @Max Hahn Ive been checking out some Adowa rhythms because of this comment! Cheers!
He is speaking the African language on this one for sure!
First Comment!!! Marcus your my Favorite player NO DOUBT. I'll be so glad to meet you someday... :)
Guy sends chills down my spine when he solos. Never seen anything like it.
great work capturing this outrageous stellar audio superb colors I need that phone
Magic happens here! Hypnotyse! Marcus-wow.. with this band and Chick-wow twice!
amazing, also his snare drum is physically so deep, wow. very unusual
I think it's just 8", pretty usual
@@josteinv.jordet257 that snare drum is 14x10 :)
That is one tall snare. compare the height to the rack tom. that's insane 😲
That's how I have mine! I like my drums to be on a level playing field to conserve energy and keep consistency in dynamics.
With 16" hi hats
Marcus's grandfather is the legendary Roy Haynes...he learned well!!
@Frits Steeghs | LLN Nope, grandfather.
damn I keep coming back to this one, ridiculously heavy
Always so musical! Keep it up man
Very DOPE Mr. Gilmore! Respect ✊🏽
The traditoinal tom' s tuning is inverted , isn't it? The floor tom sounds higher than the air tom. Smart and artistic as always. Mind blowing .
Anyone know the sticking to those "flurries" on the snare he plays at 0:38?
Tu toca muito. Sou fã do seu trabalho junto com o Hekselman!!

Speedstack21 I think you mean his GRANDFATHER Roy. :)
Chris Peters
No he meant, “His Uncle” ... Darryl’s uncle, Roy Haynes.
@@arrjee9474 Sorry, the I thought it was saying Roy was Marcus’s uncle, judging by other people in the comments.
RIP chick corea
My Teacher my Mentor
I love you Jazz clasik
Well we definitely see "Evolution of Grooving"
I love the fat snare and those shells

3:35 on...
What drum set is this?
Not about the set brother, it’s the player!
Looks like Craviotto based on the lugs and ring
@@ColdSteel-dz3pf Oh most definitely lol, I just like the look/sound of these drums. I love Marcus's playing, one of my favorite drummers ever
Who is drummer? This super musically playing
to think about music competitively is stupid and counterproductive but who playing better than marcus?
no one
brian blade
Ramon Grech dude I was literally gonna type (excluding maybe Brian Blade) but didn't. I would say they're just different, blades feel is the best tho
I'd say most great jazz musicians are driven by competition, to be fair.
sumstufflol V.C and many more
Craviotto?
Eric Andre on bass
who's on bass?
Go Marcus!!!
RIP Corea...
6/8 rules☝️
