I was a Placing judge at Hawthorne that day. I'll never forget this race. We all three just stared at each other. We'd all judged Thousands of races and were stunned. @@dehere111 hi Rick, hope you are doing great. I have great memories from those years. I hope I could go back in time and relive those days. My dad didn't have a car. We used to take the blue line usually from Division street to the Cermak and Cicero stop. Then we had to wait for a bus which I dont remember the name not sure if it was 54B it was something with B I believe. That bus stoped infront of the track. Then we walked to the track or sometimes take a shuttle inside Hawthorne's parking lot. While in the track (Hawthorne), I watched the race with him and root for the horse he played, sometimes I would play arcade machines. We often used to seat by the bleachers on the second floor or go to the third floor. Sometimes I would go by the first floor outside by the fence and yelled at the horses when they turned to the final stretch. We preferred the flat races over the harness. Two Jockeys from back then: Mark Guidry and Juvenal Diaz. We used to go to Arlington as well. We used to take the Metra to Arlington park.

My father had a horse named Slack Rack when I was a kind and he could not figure out the start to save his life.(After one of his wins, they had to get him okayed out of the gate before they could run him again.) He'd win from a mile back and, man, it was so exciting to watch him run even in those cheap races. Donna was great. If you like come behind horses, she did it at a 6f sprint, but it you reallly want to see an amazing come from behind victory in a long race, watch Calidosciopo in the Brooklyn Handicap, on a muddy track, come from so far out of it that he was out of the picture for most of the race, but started to pick em up and lay them down one at a time and win by a length!! Very good Joseph Weil. I remember having my best Breeders Cup day ever at Monmouth when Midnight Lute did just that at 12-1 I believe. Not only did I hit the win, exacta and pick3 but I told my boss that I liked him and he had me put down a thousand for him. I got quite the bonus at Christmas so I'll never forget that call. Thanks for the reminder!
Cherokee Run was a nice horse. It's going to be interesting to see where this goes. If this filly ever gets to the filly Triple Crown, she'll probably be the first horse to have a UA-cam fan base. Glad she came back ok after her second trip.
For all I know, they could very well have used a 'buzzer.' But unless I am mistaken, I believe this was a maiden race, Donnaguska's first start, these kinds of things do happen more occasionally in races with young horses, most being first time starters, you can have an idea how a horse will run, but it's really impossible to predict she would have a huge kick like that. She could have even been spooked by an outside stimuli accidentally into going faster, into an almost 'flight mode.'
Check out Calidoscopio's Brooklyn Hcp this past June, or some of Silky Sullivan's early races in '57/'58 where he'd come 25/40+ lengths off the lead and go by them as if they were walking...
buystocks, DonnaGuska has had 6 starts 2 Wins 2 Seconds 0 thirds and 2 off the board. We have her intered for a race on May 9th for the 9th race. I'm not sure if she's drawn in yet or not. Talk to Ya soon. Thanks, donna hays
OK, here's the scoop. At 2:20 Donna is dead last. At 2:22 her jock starts to whip her. Notice she is on the LEFT lead and hasn't changed for the home stretch. At 2:27 the jock gives her a couple more swipes. At 2:30 the jock pulls hard on the right rein, forcing her to finally switch to the right FRESH lead. THEN she has the kick to the wire. Racehorses are trained to switch leads to the new fresh lead for extra kick down the home stretch. She looks reluctant to switch, finally does, and zoom!
Jmarttt, We're trying to find a race for DonnaGuska now. So far the guys (Billy and Joe) haven't said anything, but i haven't ask them today as of yet. i always post on here as soon as i know something, what day and all of the other information. Thank You for asking. donna hays
If you remember Brian's Time, a little stretch running horse who normally trailed the field afer leaving the gate, this filly's performance comes up like that. The interesting thing is the final quarter in 21.4. Seems like she just galloped early on and didn't blow out until after the turn. That the kind of "freight train" runs that have people tearing up their tickets before they see the end. Nice filly!
Hello Fifikusz, Donna is taking some time off. She hurt her foot on her last race. She's still green and we want to take a lot of care with her. Not only for the injury, but because we really care about her as we do all of our horses. THANK YOU for asking about her that really means a lot. Take care and I'll talk to ya soon. your friend, donna g. hays
Ive bet on horses since 1988, and ive NEVER seen a horse come from that far back that late in a race. She must have been 10 lengths in back of the second to last horse at the top of the stretch. Yeah, the front end was dying, but you just don't see closes from that far back with that little of time left in a race. Incredible, and I wish I had 50 across on it. :(
Lol. No Ive never heard of that horse. Zenyatta came from way back, yes, but not as far back that late in the race as this horse was. Ive seen tens of thousands of races in my lifetime and ive never seen a race like this.
+LightningJanitorial rewatch her only loss in the BC Classic. She was 31 lengths behind the leaders. She came back like a freight train just to lose by a nose.
10 lengths is nothing try 41 lengths. That's how far back Silky Sullivan was in the 1958 Santa Anita and made up the whole 41 lengths to win by 1 length.
Silky Sullivan closed like crazy, as did many a horse, and probably from farther back than this horse. What youre not understanding is that this horse was that far back with so little of the race left. Silky Sullivan closed from way back in the 58 Santa Anita derby, sure, but at the top of the stretch hes only 4 lengths off the lead. The anomaly about THIS race is how far this horse was from the lead when it made its move. It simply doesnt happen.
Fifikusz, Billy told me today that DonnaGuska is gonna be off for a little while longer. She has been off for 70 days and they want to make it 90 before they try to run her again. Maybe at Turfway, just to make sure that she's healing properly. We haven't been pushing her. Also, Billy told me that since I love this horse so much that he might put her in my name. I will be so very happy if he does. Talk care, sorry it's been so long for me to write. donna hays
Hello Christine, I didn't know if Joe called you or not. DonnaGuska will be running tomorrow at Turfway in the 10 race she #8 I think the race is around 5:00 est. The race she's in will be with horses that have run multiple times. Hopefully she'll do good. I don't know if we'll make it or not I'll let you know if Billy and I will get to make it. donna
ancestralblue, I'm not sure about the rest of the pedigree, I will ask Billy though. Yes, it was her very first race. We couldn't get over how well she did. The dealings I've had with a maiden horse they normally wouldn't pass one horse, much less the whole field. Thank you, donna
fifikusz, Sorry it's been so long since i've gotten to check back here, i've been sick for the last month. DonnGuska, is doing just great. She's been trraining great too. We've been trying to find a race for her. The guys think they might hold off until Keenlend (opens April 3rd or 4th) or Churchill Downs (opens the day after.) If i here any different i'll let You know. Have a good week. donna
Jmarttt, Your right about the synthetics track. We knew that going in,but we just couldn't find a race at the time to put her in for her conditions. The wide trip around the whole track didn't help either. Billy said that no horse could go wide the whole way around the track and get in the top of the field. Nobody can be as upset, angry, embarased as much as we are. Watch the race if You will again and see what You think about being wide, let me know what You think. Thanks, donna
@fastazzu2222 Thanks Donna! I'm sorry to hear that she's not ready. What do you mean by "When they put her in the rail"? When did that happen and what happened exactly? Is or was she physically hurt or is it more a fear thing? Have a good holiday too and take care of yourself and Donnaguska.
oexplayer68, Donna's only been training on the dirt track. Billy thought it would be better to keep her on the dirt track since that was her first time out. Yes, we've had a couple of offers for her, Billy just isn't ready to let her go. We don't even know for sure what we've got. Thank You for Your reply and the Good luck wishes. donna
Jmarttt, i'm donna, the owner (with my husband billy) of donnaguska. We entered her in a stakes race, but she didn't draw in. Every time know when we're gonna race her i always post on here, since a lot of people have ask me to let them know when she will race. She ran second her last time out. Thank You for Your reply. donna hays
The pace was very fast….she was far back enough that she rounded the final turn by herself and just slingshotted off it….like Secretariat did on the first turn in the 1973 Preakness stakes….then he came right up the inside, saving a lot of ground. Perfectly timed.
Echo of Silky Sullivan! I'm surprised to only seen about a half dozen references to him. I remember as a kid watching a race on TV with my Dad. Silky Sullivan was so far back that they had a separate camera on him so you could watch him in a separate little window in the corner of the screen!
Hi Christine, We're gonna try to enter DonnaGuska at Turfway Park. If she draws in Billy and i will probably head up there. As soon as i find out if she drew in or not i'll let You know. donna hays
hey! i can argue and dont know if theres any video here at youtube at the moment but theres a horse name ''el equilibrio'' in my crountry puerto rico that he use to run 30 something lenght behind and he always find hes way home!
Buyystocks, Thank you, she's run 6 times. 2 wins,2 seconds and no shows. 2 off the board. Billy, was happy with her race, he said that she was a little tired after her run. She hasn't run since February and they haven't pushed her. No use using her up, she to good a horse for that. Take care and thank you for your interest in our horse. donna
MissingMoy, i have to admit that i've watched it a few times myself. i just hope that she does half a good the next time. Especially after what happened Thursday. She seems to be doing great. donna
No matter what you may think of horse racing, THAT was an exciting turn of events. And I note, I did not see the jockey using the whip on the winning horse. But everyone else seemed to be flailing away at their horses like mad. Maybe that says something about how you REALLY ask a horse to give you everything. It's not a demand. A really good horse doesn't need the whip,
Zenyatta won all of her 19 consecutive wins in the same fashion...She just missed going 20 for 20 in her bid to win the Breeders Cup as she was so far off the pace it was to much for her to overcome...
I watched the replay about 5 times and Donnaguska won all 5 times, wow!

It's going to be interesting to see where this goes.
If this filly ever gets to the filly Triple Crown, she'll probably be the first horse to have a UA-cam fan base.
Glad she came back ok after her second trip.
Nameofthepen,
Thank you for your reply also.
I think he was wraped up in the leader and the second horse. :)
donna
I have just watched this race for the second time and I was convinced the winner couldn't do it again BUT IT DID!
What a horse.
Hello Christine,
Thanks for the reply, that's what we thought.
Still no news on the next race, but i'll keep
You informed.
Have a good week.
donna
Omg she came out of nowhere! Amazing!
buystocks,
DonnaGuska has had 6 starts
2 Wins 2 Seconds 0 thirds and 2 off the board.
We have her intered for a race on May 9th for the 9th race. I'm not sure if she's drawn in yet or not.
Talk to Ya soon.
Thanks,
donna hays
lol i love the call at the end! "Where did she come from!?"
She looks reluctant to switch, finally does, and zoom!
shammiedog yes
A Silky Sullivan finish!
Jmarttt,
We're trying to find a race for DonnaGuska now.
Nice filly!
Hello Fifikusz,
Donna is taking some time off. She hurt her foot on her last race. She's still green and we want to take a lot of care with her. Not only for the injury, but because we really care about her as we do all of our horses. THANK YOU for asking about her that really means a lot. Take care and I'll talk to ya soon.
your friend,
donna g. hays
ancestralblue,
I didn't know if you knew or not but donnaguska will be in this Monday,
Thought you might want to know.
donna
wow that is unbelievable ive seen alot of races but i have never seen a horse come from that far back and win.
Love that long stretch at Hawthorne!
LightningJanitorial You ever heard of Zenyatta, she did it on a regular basis!!
Thanx John, good video.
Fifikusz,
Billy told me today that DonnaGuska is gonna be off for a little while longer. She has been off for 70 days and they want to make it 90 before they try to run her again. Maybe at Turfway, just to make sure that she's healing properly. We haven't been pushing her. Also, Billy told me that since I love this horse so much that he might put her in my name. I will be so very happy if he does. Talk care, sorry it's been so long for me to write.
donna hays
Omg that's a great come back!
Hello Christine,
I didn't know if Joe called you or not. DonnaGuska will be running tomorrow at Turfway in the 10 race she #8 I think the race is around 5:00 est.
The race she's in will be with horses that have run multiple times. Hopefully she'll do good.
I don't know if we'll make it or not I'll let you know if Billy and I will get to make it.
donna
ancestralblue,
I'm not sure about the rest of the pedigree, I will ask Billy though.
Yes, it was her very first race. We couldn't get over how well she did.
The dealings I've had with a maiden horse they normally wouldn't pass one horse, much less the whole field.
Thank you,
donna
HOLY CRAP. THAT WAS AMAZING.
fifikusz,
Sorry it's been so long since i've gotten to check back here, i've been sick for the last month.
DonnGuska, is doing just great. She's been trraining great too. We've been trying to find a race for her. The guys think they might hold off until Keenlend (opens April 3rd or 4th) or Churchill Downs (opens the day after.)
If i here any different i'll let You know. Have a good week.
donna
Jmarttt,
Your right about the synthetics track.
Thanks,
donna
@fastazzu2222 Thanks Donna! I'm sorry to hear that she's not ready. What do you mean by "When they put her in the rail"? When did that happen and what happened exactly? Is or was she physically hurt or is it more a fear thing? Have a good holiday too and take care of yourself and Donnaguska.
She sort of reminded me of the queen, going from last to first! She did that in impressive speed and time!
Amazing watching how this Horse picked up the pace when he switched leads in mid stretch...Soon as he switched leads he went into turbo gear
"Her lead
oexplayer68,
Donna's only been training on the dirt track. Billy thought it would be better to keep her on the dirt track since that was her first time out.
Yes, we've had a couple of offers for her, Billy just isn't ready to let her go. We don't even know for sure what we've got.
Thank You for Your reply and the Good luck wishes.
donna
Talk about hitting the after burners
Jmarttt,
i'm donna, the owner (with my husband billy) of donnaguska. We entered her in a stakes race, but she didn't draw in.
Every time know when we're gonna race her i always post on here, since a lot of people have ask me to let them know when she will race.
She ran second her last time out.
Thank You for Your reply.
donna hays
fifikusz,
You're welcome!! i don't mind a bit informing You about her race.
Thanks for the best of luck wishes.
donna hays
Jmartt,
Just wanted You to know that DonnaGuske will be running this Friday at Turfway park in the 10 race.
donna
The pace was very fast….she was far back enough that she rounded the final turn by herself and just slingshotted off it….like Secretariat did on the first turn in the 1973 Preakness stakes….then he came right up the inside, saving a lot of ground. Perfectly timed.
My dear, this was a 6 furlong race, a sprint, of COURSE the pace was fast!!. This is asinine to compare this to what Secretariat may have done.
Echo of Silky Sullivan! I'm surprised to only seen about a half dozen references to him. I remember as a kid watching a race on TV with my Dad. Silky Sullivan was so far back that they had a separate camera on him so you could watch him in a separate little window in the corner of the screen!
Ive never seen a horse close so fast, it had to be spooked by something or a damn good rider! 👍
HAND RIDE DOWN THE STRETCH??? WOW????
Hi Christine,
We're gonna try to enter DonnaGuska at Turfway Park. If she draws in Billy and i will probably head up there.
As soon as i find out if she drew in or not i'll let You know.
donna hays
I just did a little research on Equibase. This was her first lifetime start, which I suspected, do to how green she was running.
hey! i can argue and dont know if theres any video here at youtube at the moment but theres a horse name ''el equilibrio'' in my crountry puerto rico that he use to run 30 something lenght behind and he always find hes way home!
Buyystocks,
Thank you, she's run 6 times. 2 wins,2 seconds and no shows. 2 off the board.
Billy, was happy with her race, he said that she was a little tired after her run.
She hasn't run since February and they haven't pushed her. No use using her up, she to good a horse for that.
Take care and thank you for your interest in our horse.
donna
MissingMoy,
i have to admit that i've watched it a few times myself.
i just hope that she does half a good the next time.
Loved Zenyatta, was a champ.
