Knew nothing about Secretariat until i saw the film on UK TV. I love horse racing having followed it for over 40 years. Secretariat holds the stakes record time for each of the three races. His time of 2:24 for 1 1⁄2 miles in the 1973 Belmont Stakes also set a world record that still stands What a phenomenal horse.
@Tessmage_TesseraSecretariat's last two races were on grass, at 12 furlongs and 13 furlongs, winning both races against the best North American turf horses by greater than FIVE lengths.
@Tessmage_Tessera Other people can talk about Man o' War and Citation and others, and they always find reasons to downplay Secretariat, but REAL horseracing people know that Secretariat is, and always will be, the G.O.A.T.! Period. End of discussion.
I have watched this race more times than I can count. No other but Secretariat should be in the #1 spot. I actually felt sorry for Sham watching his total destruction in this race. Never has there been a Secretariat & while there have since been Triple Crown winners, they haven't even begun to touch that magic.
Secretariat was the greatest race horse I ever saw. I was 11 when he won the Belmont Stakes that day. I couldn't believe what I was watching that Saturday afternoon.
I watched it too and to this day, the hairs on my arms raise up and tears come to my eyes. You knew, even at such a young age, you saw something incredible and history being made!
Me too. I was 9 and was totally mesmerized that day. I'll never forget that day or that feeling. I truly believe there will never be a legend like him ever again. It was pure magic!
I watched it on tv also. We were stunned into silence. Every time i watch this race now i just cry. Secretariate deservedca much longer life. He will be forever one of a kind. We shall not look upon his like again.
@Tessmage_Tessera.....it was not exactly a miracle. Secretariat's heart weighed 22 pounds on autopsy. He had a very large efficient engine pumping blood to his perfect musculature. There will never be another horse like Secretariat. I was 23 when i watched this on tv. We all watched in stunned silence.

He was slowing down. It was the Derby that he kept getting faster each quarter. He was not a freak of nature, he was carefully bred. He was magnificent
@@fishinwidow35 well the problem is horses relax and slow down when they are racing without competition he would likely have ran at a faster pace if he was competing against another
Gerry Thompson…Secretariat was not slowing down. He was being hand ridden…..never touched with the whip at any point in that race. Turcotte could have picked it up at any point he wanted….and ran 2:23 or faster if he wanted. He was not slowing down. Take a look at the alternate footage. He was running as strongly as he was early in the race. The camera panned out to show where the rest of the horses were so it may have appeared that he was slowing down but he was not. He was pulling away all from the field even more in the stretch. None of them closed that gap at any point because his lead kept increasing. He slowed down after he crossed the finish line.
Gerry Thompson….you’re just the typical jealous HATER. Secretariat was being hand ridden and could have gone faster if he had to but Turcotte knew he had the record and he was still pulling away from the field. He was running easy and Turcotye knew and so do you. You’re just jealous but it’s okay. People like you need to be pitied because you got nothing else but to hate on greatness. Let me guess….you’re either a member of the Sommer family who owned Sham or a relative of Frank Martin because your jealousy permeates from your ridiculous comment. So sad for you.

Just imagine if they could have produced an heir!! That would be one for the record books. Too bad Bold Rule died a year after Secretariat was born. A full sibling would have been amazing.
@@shopahauliquewithjacquelin7025 Secretariat had two full older sisters. A 1969 filly, The Bride, career record 4:0-0-0, and a 1965 filly, Syrian Sea, winner of multiple stakes but not a champion; a very good race horse, not a great one. Man o'War had 4 full siblings. One was a moderately successful racehorse. Barbaro has 4 full siblings, all younger. Three have won $100,000+, but none reached a million dollars. 3-time champion Bold Ruler had 5 full siblings. One was a moderately successful racehorse. There are many, many other obscure or failed racehorses who are full siblings to champions. Indeed, I am unable to think of any full sibling pair in which both horses have been champions/great, although such probably has occurred at some point. There is the additional "problem" that Zenyatta, bred to stallions more successful than Secretariat, has been a major disappointment as a broodmare. (Secretariat was a good but not outstanding sire of racehorses, not the failed sire many perceive him to be.) Zenyatta's two sons were retired with no wins in a combined 17 starts. Her 2017 filly Zellda has yet to make a start, which is of course also true of her yearling daughter Zilkha. For reasons of size and running style, I am personally doubtful Secretariat and Zenyatta would have been a good match, although (as I have been trying to point out) genetics is always a role of the dice. Sec and Z would have been distantly related enough to have been bred together, unlike Ruffian, had she survived to be bred. Zenyatta, btw, also had a 2014 filly who died from a paddock accident as a weanling; a 2015 colt who died a few days after birth from meconium aspiration; and pregnancy losses in 2018 and 2021. : (
Risen Star should be on this list. Secretariat's boy running at the Belmont, destroying the competition. He should've won the Triple Crown but the way they ran him in the Derby took it away. He was a huge horse, much bigger than his daddy and while he was a well tempered horse, you didn't make the mistake of not respecting him. One of my favorites.
@@jongalatis3465, another great call was Rags to Riches winning the Belmont. It had been over 100 years since a filly took down the boys there and the screaming was intense, "A filly wins the Belmont, a filly wins the Belmont...". As they said, her pedigree was impeccable.
Cheryl Richards Agreed. All of them, any that were filmed, for posterity. I taped all the Triple crown races for years until the VCR kicked it. Need to get them onto disc. One day . . .
I know every word of the call from Secretariat's Belmont and I cry every time...the backstory, Sham, the politics of the American '70s. But this FEODOR?? Must Learn More! Australian horse racing is f'in' amazing.
Most famous racehorses are related in someway. Secretariat and seabiscuit where basically cousins. Man o war was seabiscuit’s grandfather, and war admiral was his uncle. American pharaohs great great great grandfather was secretariat. I love racehorse history
I think Zenyatta's 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic win should be here. It's the most impressive race I've seen, second only to Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes. She broke poorly and started off dead last and yet she easily breezed by all the other horses to win the race. She was the first and still only female horse to win the Classic. Watching that race still gives me chills. Also, she definitely would have won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2010 if she hadn't been blocked in and I'm still mad about it.
I have to agree 👍,now taking the Legend 'Secretariat' out of the discussion for a min!...In Europe they've had Sea the Stars and Frankel, but like u,I think 'Zenyatta'.was a fantastic Horse&such a 'Superstar' for racing in general!
You missed the point of this video - it's about horses drawing off and winning by large margins. Zenyatta's win doesn't cut it as she only won by a length.
Zenyatta was a contemporary thoroughbred. She's still alive. She did beat the Kentucky Derby winner and the Belmont winner. That's what makes her win so significant. Also, no filly had ever won the Breeders Cup Classic. She remains the only filly ever to achieve this. That race is spectacular.
FRANKEL He! He! ! Also great horses don't lose 5 races, and get thrashed 4.5L receiving 7lb, by ProveOut an average handicapper who's race record is, Ran 39- won 9. Who BTW in the Wooward Stakes, on sloppy wet going and not trying to run a fast time still ran the in 2.25.8 destroying Secretariat in the process. . LOL
@@protarget1 seceritairt won the record on dry dirt. Some horses have beaten his records on some races on different types of tracks, not the same type he was on.
I've always felt bad for Sham, if that horse raced at any other time it would have been a triple crown winner, but it just had to go against secretariat.and I guess they're both descendants of Eclipse.
protarget1 So why is Secretariat in the Hall of Fame and Prove Out isn’t? Secretariat win the Triple Crown after a 25 year drought and his records still stand after 47 years. He was unbeaten on the grass and defeated older horses in both of them. Oh and in the Woodward he defeated Cougar II by 11 lengths. He broke a world record in his next race the Marlboro Cup again defeating older horses.
Ok, I personally think that Secretariat’s Belmont Stakes run should’ve been number 1. I mean, 31 lengths there has been no horse on earth that has beaten his Triple Crown records. Again, that’s just my opinion.
That is certainly true. They seem to just be going by numbers. But I think his Kentucky Derby was even more impressive. He *accelerated* through the whole race! Each quarter mile was faster than the one before it! That is so amazing!
Secretariat's Belmont win was the greatest dirt track performance. It made the front pages here in Australia where we are mad about horse racing. Phar Lap did something similar winning a race at Randwick early in his career in the AJC Plate, breaking every track record from 8f on when opening up a 30 length lead. Eased down, he broke the Australiasian record by 6 seconds. Vain's 12 len win in the 6f Craven Stakes in 1968 was the greatest sprint performance I have personally witnessed, or seen anywhere. He ran 1m 9.8 on a badly rain affected track at Caulfield. I was at the track when Might and Power recorded the win above. The horse that ran 10 lens second won the now G1 Mackinnon Stakes the following Spring. His Caulfield Cup win was also astonishing.
Crazy thing I heard while watching Belmont this year. “All horses racing except one (which happened to be the longshot) were all in the lineage of Secretariat”. Blew my mind when I heard that
God, sometimes He throws a flower to tell us that He is there ... and Secretariat, one of His magnificent creatures, is a sample of the flowers that God shows us ... I will forever love the power and majesty of Secretariat .. .
Honorable mentions to Smarty Jones in the Preakness, Point Given in the Belmont American Pharoah's Preakness and Breeders Cup Classic, and even Risen Star.
Secretariat and Frankel’s performances are on another level to everything else in this list here (or any list). High level Group 1 company also. Secretariat’s a lot further at 31 lengths, but Frankel’s over a straight mile on good to soft ground. Both unfathomable performances. 🐴🐴
Frankel never really faced anyone. There were horses he could have taken on if he wanted to go looking for trouble but he stayed put and raced the same stock over and over. Sea the Stars was better...still never really put himself out there. Neither have much in the way of track, race or world records to show for their efforts. The horses from the 70s would have eaten these guys up...Spectacular Bid...
@@toddjohnson7133 Frankel blitzed the field in the 2000 guineas in a manner no other horse has done in over 200 years. He beat Canford Cliffs in the Sussex Stakes as a 3 year old. He beat Excelebration a couple of times who was his same age and the closest challenger to him domestically over the mile trip. He beat St Nicholas Abbey and Farhh when upped to 10f in the Juddmonte at York. He beat Cirrus des aigles and Nathanial in the mud at Ascot. To have campaigned him more aggressively would have been reckless. He was the best of his generation and it will only ever be an opinion to believe there was another greater.

Even tho I personally hate the horse racing industry with a burning passion I can still say that I’m fairly impressed with these horses races and speed. Very talented horses here.
Dont forget the victory of man o war in the lawrence realization, Man o' War won by slightly more than a quarter-mile - the official margin was 100 lengths - while setting a new world record of 2:40 4/5 for a mile and five-eighths. This broke the existing world record set in England by 1 3⁄5 seconds and lowered the American record by over four seconds.[41] This world record stood until 1956, when it was broken by Man o' War's great-grandson Swaps.[26]
And the official record notes that he was "restrained" while doing it! :) I know they wanted to take care of him, but I can't help wishing they'd really let him run.
@@Rennies-World I actually pointed that out in a post. Thank you. :) The owner didn't believe even in the Kentucky Derby, who knows what changed his mind for War Admiral, but that horse was his baby. I’ve read that Secretariat was actually ACCELERATING on the home stretch and over the line...after he died the necropsy showed his heart muscle to weigh a third more than average RACE horse’s heart...truly a unique creature, and arguably the greatest sporting achievement of the the last century. With all the advances and research into breeding, training, feed, medicine, workouts, and no other horse has come close to him in that race.
Why isn’t Rachel Alexandra’s win by 20 lengths at the Kentucky Oaks on here? Who put this list together and what kind of criteria did they use? Because it’s not making a lot of sense to me right now!
Or MoW winning by 100 lengths... Or Overdose winning with 18 lengths over 5f in just 0.54 secs. Or Kincsem record holder for almost 150 years undefeated 54/54...
For distance won no doubt Secretariat was epic because he shattered the record and was the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 25 years. But Feadors win was something...He so outclassed that field, he was the winner before he had his morning oats. But if you are going strictly on "Epic Races" you MUST include Silky Sullivan. No horse (except for the movie The Black Stallion) ever came from as far behind to win. Including Zenyatta and Winx. Oh, and Man O' War won the Lawrence Realization Stakes at Belmont, Sept 4, 1920 by 100 lengths.💥

I understand your point. The only problem with this video is the title implies that the list is objective rather than subjective. There are a number of significant races where the margin of victory was double digits so there is no reason why this top ten list should have any single digit winning margins.

Aside from Secretariats' incredible Belmont Win by 31 Lengths, in which he shot out of the Gate like a dynamo, and stayed in front from beginning to end!! His Kentucky Derby and Preakness Derby races, were nerve wracking, in how he came from the rear, to make up the time and difference to Win!! I Love You Secretariat, you incredible beauty, and Wonder Horse!!!
That pass on the first turn on the OUTSIDE in the Preakness was beyond unreal. He went from last to first in 15 seconds while passing the fastest horses in the world. Knew nothing about Secretariat until i saw the film on UK TV. I love horse racing having followed it for over 40 years. Secretariat holds the stakes record time for each of the three races. His time of 2:24 for 1 1⁄2 miles in the 1973 Belmont Stakes also set a world record that still stands
What a phenomenal horse.
What about Hawkster 2.22.8 in 1989?
World record on dirt
I'll never forget that race I was 15. Was that aired on Wide World of Sports?
I watched it on tv also. We were stunned into silence. Every time i watch this race now i just cry. Secretariate deservedca much longer life. He will be forever one of a kind. We shall not look upon his like again.
@Tessmage_Tessera.....it was not exactly a miracle. Secretariat's heart weighed 22 pounds on autopsy. He had a very large efficient engine pumping blood to his perfect musculature. There will never be another horse like Secretariat. I was 23 when i watched this on tv. We all watched in stunned silence.
“He’s moving like a tremendous machine”
Dan Patch was about 50 lengths better than any other horse at the turn of the century.

Secretariat got faster as the race went on. He was an awesome freak of nature.
He was slowing down. It was the Derby that he kept getting faster each quarter. He was not a freak of nature, he was carefully bred. He was magnificent
@@fishinwidow35 well the problem is horses relax and slow down when they are racing without competition he would likely have ran at a faster pace if he was competing against another
@@draggy6544 Quite possibly. He was very competitive

Secretariat was just a miracle.....Zenyatta is my next pick! Love that horse!!!
I would have liked to have seen Risen Star's '88 Belmont 15 lengths and the famous "he looks like his daddy at this point" line.
VegasUte It's on UA-cam you know. Or did you mean you wished to have seen it live that day?
Risen Star should be on this list. Secretariat's boy running at the Belmont, destroying the competition. He should've won the Triple Crown but the way they ran him in the Derby took it away. He was a huge horse, much bigger than his daddy and while he was a well tempered horse, you didn't make the mistake of not respecting him. One of my favorites.
Second best race call i ever heard. Of course 'his daddy' had the best. 'Moving like a tremendous machine'
@@jongalatis3465, another great call was Rags to Riches winning the Belmont. It had been over 100 years since a filly took down the boys there and the screaming was intense, "A filly wins the Belmont, a filly wins the Belmont...". As they said, her pedigree was impeccable.

All the way back to the great Phar lap from NZ
That afternoon in the Belmont Stakes - it was athletic excellence.
Secretariat. Out of this world . 👏👍🏆unforgettable. Salute 🫡
Secretariat 🏇 is a legend we will never see like him
FRANKEL He! He!
Some horses have beaten his records on some races on different types of tracks, not the same type he was on.

protarget1 So why is Secretariat in the Hall of Fame and Prove Out isn’t?
Concordo plenamente com vc. Big Red é imbatível !!
It's the greatest race ever won, but the video was made to put the largest margin of victory at number one.

What a crock of ----! Secretariat should, without any doubt, be #1!!!
Blew my mind when I heard that
He was a good broodmare stud.

Dont forget the victory of man o war in the lawrence realization, Man o' War won by slightly more than a quarter-mile - the official margin was 100 lengths - while setting a new world record of 2:40 4/5 for a mile and five-eighths. This broke the existing world record set in England by 1
3⁄5 seconds and lowered the American record by over four seconds.[41] This world record stood until 1956, when it was broken by Man o' War's great-grandson Swaps.[26]
And the official record notes that he was "restrained" while doing it! :) I know they wanted to take care of him, but I can't help wishing they'd really let him run.

@@SaraNightfire1 When MoW ran, the Derby want really a big deal in the racing world. But War Annual came along nearly 20 years later, and things had changed. Kentucky became more of an "Eastern" state, and the prestige was higher. Riddle definitely changed with time.

Why isn’t Rachel Alexandra’s win by 20 lengths at the Kentucky Oaks on here? Who put this list together and what kind of criteria did they use? Because it’s not making a lot of sense to me right now!
Because someone wanted to put a bunch of foreign races in there.
Or MoW winning by 100 lengths...
Or Overdose winning with 18 lengths over 5f in just 0.54 secs.
Or Kincsem record holder for almost 150 years undefeated 54/54...
Count Fleet’s 25-length win at the 1943 Belmont might have been considered for the top 10 also.
To everyone criticizing because a favorite horse or horses from a given country weren’t included, you’re free to create your own channel and post videos, you know. No one is stopping you.
I understand your point. The only problem with this video is the title implies that the list is objective rather than subjective. There are a number of significant races where the margin of victory was double digits so there is no reason why this top ten list should have any single digit winning margins.
Secretariat has my heart, I think he should me the first, but it's ok, we know he is the best

🔵Lilly, The video tittle is win by lenghts not best. Absolutely awesome finish
Secretariat was the greatest horse ever. He was declared the Greatest Animal Athlete of the 20th Century. He was the pinnacle of his kind.
He, Secretariat, made me think of a big Buick, slow off the start, but once it got going, it picked up speed, and momentum, and roared away, and nothing could come close!
I think we all were expecting Secretariat to behave in the same way at The Belmont Stakes, and he ended up shocking us all, when he shot out of his Gate like a bullet, and stayed in front all the way, only to keep gaining more and more speed, and momentum, to finish the Belmont Race by an incredible 31 unbelievable Lengths!!!!
I Love You Secretariat, you incredible beauty, and Wonder Horse!!!
He did start out in the back in the Preakness, but he took the lead in that race on the first turn, still early in the race.
That pass on the first turn on the OUTSIDE in the Preakness was beyond unreal. He went from last to first in 15 seconds while passing the fastest horses in the world. I was watching him from the very start of the race and I did NOT see Turcotte touch the whip (but maybe he did). That was all on Secretariat! And once he got in the lead he was on cruise control nobody was gonna be passing him that race was over right there and I knew it.

@@shopahauliquewithjacquelin7025 Yes... We know this. I do appreciate the news flash from 1988 though.
@@v4pilot331 Well not everyone knows that 3 of the top 4 times in the Belmont are held Secretariat and his son and grandson. You will not be the only one reading this. Additionally, probably one of Secretariat's descendants will win the Belmont today, since 6 out of 8 are descended from him with Rombauer being twice descended from Secretariat from both his greatest daughters, Weekend Surprise and Terlingua; and both Overtook and Bourbonic being the most closely related to him 4 generations back.
@@shopahauliquewithjacquelin7025 blah blah blah... class dismissed
Risen Star in the 88 Belmont? 14-15 lengths there...
Secretariat's Belmont should be #1 and his Preakness should be #2!
He only won by 2 in the Preakness
@@babygirl.yo.girl.6666 Right, but the second place horse (Sham) also broke the old Preakness record; and, it was a fantastic run from last place. If the Preakness were longer, Secretariat would have won by more.
Secretariat's burst of speed in the Preakness was a sight to behold. Last to first in 12 seconds.
Ruffian and Rachel Alexandra should be in the video though....
Where is Risen Star? His daddy (Secretariat) won the Belmont by 31 lengths, he won the Belmont by 19 lengths😮
I'm surprised that Rain Lover winning his first Melbourne Cup by 8 lengths didn't make into a world's top ten.
Mine that Bird had an amazing Kentucky derby race. His comeback was unbelievable
It should all be double digit winners on this list. Like Accelerate and Beholders Pacific Classics, Arrogates Travers, California Chromes Winter Challenge, Secretariats Candian International, Bertrandos Woodward, Rachel Alexandra's KY Oaks, Officers Zany Tactics, See The Moons German Derby, Slip Anchors English Derby, etc.
Some of those races could have easily been replaced 🤷🏾♂️
No one can beat my big boy secretariat, o god i got chills wathching sectretariat
Would be interesting to see top 10 toughest races around the world and which horse was arguably the best in that race.
Example: Grand National - Red Rum
Red ran 5 times, won three, came second twice
Red never fell at a fence and singlehandedly saved the Grand National race...a legend
what the HELL? How can you put Secretariat SECOND? yes, Feodore had a bigger lead but that speaks to the competition, not the horse
There will never be another horse like Secretariart!!! I had the privilege to actually see him win the Derby & he was sooooo incredible. In my opinion he is the best race horse ever to have been & ever will be bred!!!! He was so gorgeous & so incredible.
KADENA born 2019 $725,000 US at the Lexington yearling sale. Forget Secretariat. The breed of the century.
Якби поставили Секретаріата та колгоспних коней в один забіг то він приніс би і 100 корпусів.
The flow starting from 11:47 is really dope.
Secretariat was the greatest! In any other year Sham would likely have won the Triple Crown, so it isn't like Secretariat didn't have competition!
Some shared bloodlines there. Sham was just unlucky that Secretariat was born the same year.
Secretariat!.. regards from Puerto Rico
SECRETARIAT HAS TO BE NUMBER 1!!! HES THE CHAMP LEGEND
Old time New York race steward, Francis Dunne, was asked if Man O' War or Secretariat were the greatest he had seen race in nth America. His succint reply was telling when he quickly replied, "I saw Phar Lap!" [Agua Caliente Hcp, 1932]
They should have included Rachel Alexandra's 2009 Kentucky Oaks win by 21 lengths.
Agree she was a beast how could they not also the Mother Gosse & haskell she deserves more respect as a 3yr old not even Zenyatta could of beat her,the only
horse that could of beat her was Big Red she deserves more respect then what she is getting from the public & so call exsperts.
I think if she had had a trainer who was a Philly type trainer she lost alot of her natural gate ran more like a colt at 4 the extra weight didn't apparently help her lady secret was a small beast just Rachel Alexandra could of done wonders at 4 having a different training style just an opinion .
This whole list is incredible.. my top 3: Feodor by 49 lengths and obviously
Secretariat.. however, street sense was the most impressive because he was the only one that was towards the end of the pack up until the 3/4 pole; while the other horses on the list were either on the lead or just right off the pace the entire time.
No Rachel Alexandra wow she win more than 24 length .....
was a terrible field
For me the most memorable piece of commentating ever was undoubtedly in the 1973 Preakness, " He is moving like a tremendous machine...Secretariat by 12...Secretariat by 13 lengths..."!!
SORRY .. Please forgive my enthusiastic errata.. It was of course The 1973 BELMONTI meant to refer to Not The Preakness..!
Yup, the Preakness was...
"But here comes Secretariat, he's moving fast, he's going for the lead, and it's right now he's going for it!" Chic Anderson immortalized as well by his famous calls of the 1973 triple crown.
Here`s one no one got, Conquistador Ceilo!! 14 3/4 Belmont stakes and 5 days earlier he won the Met Mile against older horses in 1.33.1 by 8 3/4 lengths!!
Vincent Flauto Good one.
awesome memories, absolutely performer what a Heart Secretariat!!
Rachel Alexandra in the Kentucky Oaks and Mother Goose. Smarty Jones and Funny Cide in the Preakness. Bet Twice, Risen Star and Point Given in the Belmont. Damascus and Arrogate in the Travers. Frosted in the Met Mile.
I CAN TOP THAT. I'M THE TOP RACING HISTORIAN
KELSO= JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP! (WORLD RECORD STILL) COUNT FLEET= BELMONT= 25! L! MAN O' WAR= WIN= 100 LENGTHS.
@@captainamericaamerica8090 Oh brother I was looking for someone to bring up Man o' War's 100-length win. You do realize that race would have been a walkover, because no one wanted to run against him? So Samuel Riddle's niece entered her horse, who had just run THE DAY BEFORE, because the purse would have been reduced in a walkover. So her poor horse was sent out for a canter around the track so Man o' War would have at least one opponent. Hmm. Knowing that, maybe he should have won by more? lol
@@NavvyMom he was hold back, but didn't cooperate lol...
He also won at Belmont with 20 lengths
Secretariat - Big Red - was a Super Horse. The GOAT. It is just that simple.
