Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 175: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. People love this game. People say it's the greatest game for the Nintendo 64. Some say it's the best game of all time. Really? Majora's Mask is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released in 2000 as the sixth main installment in The Legend of Zelda series and was the second to use 3D graphics. It's set in Termina, an alternate reality to Ocarina of Time's Hyrule, which is to be destroyed along with its inhabitants in three days by a giant falling moon unless the player can save it from imminent doom. But can the Nerd survive this game???

Hey said once that he will never stop this series. He said even if it slows down don't think it will stop. Since he said that he's been releasing them way more often then he did about 3 years ago.

Did you know that Majora's Mask's time limit was originally going to be 7 Days (168 Hours), but due to N64 hardware limitations, design choices, and the fact this idea was in the pre-planning stage, it was slashed down to 3 Days (72 Hours).

Nostalgia. It makes you remember things better than they actually were. I went back and played Road Runners Death Valley Rally and I completely forgot just how trash the controls were.

The end hasn't happened, so no. It didn't age well at all.
Fun fact: when the nerd said that he had to fight the twinmold boss again to get the heart peice he could have just reentered the dungeon and teleported to the boss room with the boss killed and the peice still there!
That is definitely his fault. This is far from the only time where you have to spend 1.5 seconds to actually find the heart container after beating bosses.
I think he did it on purpose to make a point about the game design. The game could simply ask "are you done here? Do you want to leave?" and nothing of this would be necessary.
@@monsterbroccoli884 There are 3 bosses before that who have heart containers after you beat them, so it would be inconsistent game design to not have one from Twinmold. Since you actually have to walk up to the light portal to leave, why wouldn't the game think you're done looking around. James was just exaggerating for a joke, so I gave him a pass.

@@V-Jes you don't need a strategy guy to know about that just talk to the scarecrow. whether you dance with them or not if you simply has to know more about the mysterious song he'll basically tell you that if you play this Song of Time backwards you'll slow time down and if you play each note twice in a row you'll move to the next 6:00 hour. You don't need a strategy to figure that out so the fact that he missed that obvious little tibit feels like a disgrace and a disappointment

Just to point out, Termina is an alternate dimension/universe which is connected via the Lost Woods, which is why it still has some similarity in the inhabitants to Hyrule

Majora's Mask is the only Zelda game with a Metroid-like saving system. You save with the song of time or the owls (this means, backtracking).
@@saricubra2867 And the owls are suspend saves, like in a roguelike game. Unless you're playing the 3DS version, in which the song of time doesn't save the game anymore, but the owls are permanent saves now. (And there's more statues scattered around that don't let you fast travel to them, but do let you save at them. Again, permanent saves.)

did everyone forget the song of soaring exists and can be used everywhere. or the fact even if you save mid dungeon in other zelda game its spits you back at the entrance or your house on the map and resets the dungeon?
As a guy who has enjoyed Majora's Mask almost since day one...
I loved this review so much.
James goes out of his way to explain that, while the game frustrated him a lot on a technical standpoint, there were elements he legitimately liked, including its style and lore, and that he doesn't "hate" it in a stereotypical online critic sense. He considers it a "love and hate" kind of experience.
Making it better is that, in typical James Rolfe fashion, he's polite and respectful about his opinions and observations, doesn't antagonize other people's opinions or views of the game, and actually raises valid points without coming across as rude or pretentious...and he makes it clear on when he's joking and when he's not.
Bravo, James. Bravo.
James is smart enough to know not to just make brash statements and shit all over his fans lol
I think he would have liked it if he actually played it when it came out. Everything from that era ages poorly which I don't think is fair to the game.
@@dhLord64 Some games from the N64 have aged decently. I think Paper Mario has aged remarkably well both in gameplay and graphics.
Hemade of lot of the problems himself.
For example it seemed like he refused to save at owl statues, when he mentioned that he ledt the console on for hours.
He could skip through the banker's dialogue by pressing B.
He doesn't need to regrind or rebuy all the arrows and bombs, you find them on your way anyways.

I have not seen these “people” you’re referring to.
I honestly feel this is a weaker one than usual.
This one was pretty weak. It didn't help it was full of mistakes and more or less just demonstrated James doesn't really grasp the games he plays very well. He also completely ignored a pretty important part of the gameplay which is the masks that don't transform you...IE the Captain Keeta race was difficult for him because he didn't have the bunny ears. It's a bad review when you don't even touch on a large component of the game.
Majora's Mask was the first game where I followed a strategy guide religiously just to get through the game. Over time, I didn't use it as much, and then it got to the point where I didn't need it at all. But I will say, the 3DS version of the game is amazing and it fixes loads of things from the 64 version. The clock is also easier to follow and you can choose specific times to jump to, but only going forward and not back. But it does teach you on how to deal with time and schedule things at specific times. The whole game is a cool idea. It just takes a good bit of time to get used to it.

You can save at the owl checkpoints for a temp save that closes the game. They're literally all over the place, there's no need to leave your console on overnight

Honestly I love this episode, with the Earthbound video it's easy to interpret James' opinion as a herd mentality to copy what others feel or think about it, but admitting fairly bluntly that he doesn't really like Majora's Mask shows that his opinions for both this and Earthbound are genuine. Not to mention the overall writing just feels really pure - playing a game that's frustrating for hours on end and treating it like an effort more than casually playing a game. Video games are fun but sometimes a hard one can get the better of you and can challenge your mental capacity and will to not give up.
Except he actually liked Earthbound in spite of the game being in a substandard RPG that gets by entirely on wackiness.
I found MM fun.

We need more N64 from AVGN.
He seems to hate all n64 gameplay mechanics. Even ones I think were done very well. I've already realized he's one of those people who didn't get into the n64 when it was out and will hate it no matter what. He complains his way through games that most people love.

The timer that the game revolves around is probably not what the majority would prefer when wanting something challenging.
I loved the timer because it helped immerse me into the world, and there were actual things at stake.
I think what the mass majority would prefer is to have a challenging time with the actual content and not against the clock.

I still love this game. But my repressed memories of that Goron jump at the start of Snowfall Temple and the whirlpool room in Great Bay Temple did not need to be woken up.

I disagree that the Nintendo 64's graphics are unsatisfactory. The low poly count and plain textures gave rise to a certain style, as long as you did not zoom in too much to character faces or stared at a wall.

The reason why the graphics catch so much hate is because they look at the games that tried to be realistic
Majora's Mask was one of the most interesting games to play before the internet was what we have today, no UA-cam guides to help out. I found it to be an experience, bought the Golden N64 controller and Holographic edition, completed everything, all without the internet. Pretty fun, odd game.

I love this. I know, generic, but this and OoT are generally my favorite older games to play. But as far as the hookshot, you shoot the tree on the turtle because it grabs onto wood. The ice arrows won't make ice too close to the room walls. Definitely love/hate with the more tedious/difficult things though.
