Grazie! Great video - we visited Italy in May this year to get married. Having never spoken Italian before, I started watching your videos at the start of the year, making a notebook of lists of words and phrases I wanted to remember, watching Italian films and listening to Italian music. I surprised myself so much! I didn't quite get to a conversational level, but I would often practice scenarios the day before and could quite happily walk into shops and explain myself in most situations (booking tables, ordering food, posting a parcel to England with a guy who couldn't speak a word of English) - and now Italian is my favourite language I have tried to learn and I'm slowly continuing.
This is so true. I’ve been learning Italian for 4 months and I can understand most of this conversation without subtitles. Context is key. Plus using the same words you know in different sentences really helps - rather than just learning vocabulary. Keep using the words you know in different sentences. You need to learn the vocabulary in the context of real sentences
Grazie per il video. Molto bello e utile come sempre. Volevo anche fare questo commento per dirvi che mi piace un sacco il maglione di Katie. Molto bello!
Just want to share my excitement for Katie and Matteo's Joy of Languages online school. I've been studying with them for almost five years and it is fantastic! I have had conversations with Italians -- short and spontaneous and for hours when visiting -- all thanks to Joy of Languages. Their course is set up so that you practice in just the way they've recommended and it works!
GRAZIE!!! I was trying to learn the 1000 most common Italian words with isolated flashcards but now I'm going to add context to each flashcard THANKYOU
Vocabulary is no problem; grammar is. English doesn't employ the subjunctive except for minor instances and most English speakers ignore it anyway. Its verbs are not conjugated (with rare exceptions) and its articles are not declined. I'm sure I sound pretty uneducated in Italian. It's one thing to understand the grammar but it's another thing to produce it spontaneously.
I'm Italian. In English, I find phrasal verbs a bit difficult. We do have phrasal verbs in Italian (e.g. "tirare fuori", "mandare giù", ...) but they're not as prevalent as in English. And also when to use "do" vs when to use "make", which in Italian are the same verb.
English is a different piece of cake but that doesn't mean it's easier than Italian. While learning English, I sweated blood to understand the zillions of tenses, aspects and whatnot. In my language, we use past, present and future (in everyday speech, it's mostly simple past and present as we just refer to the future in present tense). And the passive voice is considered archaic. So everything is clean, simple, straightforward, easy, nothing complicated to understand. Now compare that with English: all tenses have simple, continuous and perfect aspects... They use multiple past tenses... Not to mention completely mind-boggling, space-time continuum crushing things like "future in the past" (e.g. "He said he would do it" where you simply mean "He said he will do it") - or worse still, "past in the future" which I still refuse to accept as it goes against logic. Future perfect?? (E.g. "He will have done it.") How can it be "perfect" (perfect meaning "completed" in linguistics) when the whole thing hasn't even happened yet?! LOL
Perdón, eataba disfrutando este magnífico vídeo autodidáctico hasta escuchar la canción en 6:07; ¿alguien sabe cómo se llama? Una vez escuvhada, ¡juro deber haberla escuchado en algún lugar! Gracias por el auxilio 🙏
Mi piace molto questo video, semplice, e utile. Ho sorriso quando ho sentito "ave contesto". Mi ha ricordato i miei giorni nella scuola cattolica, cantando Ave Maria.
Grazie mille. Your video came at the perfect time for me (level 2 JOL and finding speaking to be very challenging and frustrating). But your JOL courses are excellent for learning as you give us "context" each day around The Storia and the subsequent lessons. I will continue to listen, listen, listen!
Dato che studi l'italiano mi permetto di dirti che l'articolo più corretto in questo caso è "lo" : "lo chignon " invece di "il chignon". Saluti da Firenze, Italia 👋
I have been wanting to learn Italian but always seem to waiver from being consistent. But seeing more of your videos makes me really want to learn it for real!
@@joyoflanguages.italianGrazie per la tua motivazione. You both are the best teachers. I am glad to find your channels Easy Italian and Joy of Languages 😊
I find that my progress is never consistent - some things I learn quickly, others can be slower. There’s always moments when I realise I’ve got the hang of something but didn’t realise until I’d been using it for a while.

Learn grammar as time passes by & gradually. Focusing too much on grammar initially just confuses you in the beginnings. I know it’s weird to say this because you may have an exam to pass soon, but generally speaking, doing this in the long run helps so much.
A terrific video as always! Thank you Katie (with your cute chignon) and Matteo, your videos are never dull and contain really useful tips. I raced through Duolingo and finished with the most motley mix of non sensical phrases 😅.
These videos are so helpful. You guys speak slow and the transcriptions of both English and Italian are super helpful. I've been writing down so many words on a spreadsheet. But what I'm finding is that I never go back to that spreadsheet and study them, lol. So, it seems to be more useful to just keep listening and transcribing. I find myself transcribing the same words like 30 times, and then I finally get it. But you guys are awesome. How much does the school cost?
Hail the context 👑! Even in our own native languages, we don't know every single word to live our lives with the language, specially with the younger generations creating new words. Always have to look up new words in my own native language 😂❤
Eu falo português e estou escrevendo em português. Parece que a maioria das pessoas aqui é falante de inglês. Sou estudante de italiano há 5 anos, mas não evolui devido não aprender bem a gramática.
I struggle to read the captions in Italian and English at the same time. So I must keep pausing. And advise on how to better follow along with what you are saying?
I recommend you go through the video and just read the English subtitles so you know what the video is about. Then rewatch it only reading the Italian subtitles to see how much you can get after having reading the English subs once.
