I've heard it only once. At the time we had cats, which were well-accustomed to all the "normal" piggy sounds but when the chirping started, both cats and I sat right up in bed and we all looked over at the enclosure immediately. I can't tell you why a piggy was chirping - nothing was really happening - but it stopped on its own after about ten seconds.
I love the way Minni's ears go in sympathy with Lulu's squeaks! And Minni's squeak sounds just like some of my guinea pigs. I call it the 'squeaky gate' squeak! I had to wait 22 years before I first heard the 'chirping' noise!
I had to wait wait 22 years of guinea pig keeping before one of them made the 'bird noise'. IN all the miriads of guinea pigs I have kept,, only a few have reached 7 years. And only one has reached 8 years,. which was very recent.

In 20+ years of having guinea pigs, we almost never heard chirping... until a few months after our new rescue gave birth back in August to four babies. They all chirp from time to time, always at night, usually when the lights are off. They'll quiet down when a human comes over. Sometimes they'll accept pets; once, one ran over to me, looked at me, then to the spot I usually pick her up, clearly demanding a snuggle. I think what's going on there is that they consider us (humans) part of the herd, and sometimes feel distressed that one is not present. I was sitting there as they were born, they've gotten tons of socialization, and they've surely noticed that chirping causes one if us, usually me, to appear! It might have began as distressed but it seems to have become "summon human (without treats)"... we've caught them chirping while lying down. We're their family too! We're supposed to be there! 😭
I love when their ears go back when they wheek! Our boy Widget does what we call his piggy giggles. It almost sounds like a cat purr but with more voice. He does it every time he gets chin and cheek rubs.
I love that name. My piggies have an open cage concept and the alpha Smore will come running when she hears me chopping veggies and if I am sitting on the floor near the cage she comes for scritches on her nose. 😀
the screaming squeak was my dramatic princess piggy every. day. everytime i had food they’d scream at me. or when they wanted food when i woke up in the mornings🤣
Oh my gosh I have a guinea pig who wheeks like the unique one she is also really quiet when she wheeks I have never heard her be as loud as the other guinea pig
When we first got Ivory as a baby (she was taken from her mom too early) she would chirp all the time if the older pigs where not near her, only the adults if the teen pigs where near she'd still do it. She's fully grown now and still tries to cuddle her adopted mom even now
I really appreciate having a close-up as the piggie is making any kind of sound. I suppose that it's not possible to train a piggie to " speak" on command!? Wouldn't THAT be fun!!
My boys are definitely loud wheekers whenever it's morning or evening around breakfast and dinnertime they go nuts you can hear them all the way upstairs so I don't really need an alarm clock lol. They also get noisy when they are out of hay Fret likes going on the upstairs level of their cage and chewing the bars so the door upstairs rattles since it's looser then the downstairs door my mom jokes about it saying they're attempting a jailbreak.
I've caught my guinea pig chirping not once but twice I thought she was crying but it turns out she was upset thank you so much for making this video.🙂
My guinea pigs once heard a real bird out my window (my room is by a tree and I love the birds that live there). They were a bit weirded out and started chirping. I thought they were imitating the bird!
My guinea pigs used to chirp a lot when their cage wasn't set up properly... it was only at night when they were rank fighting or having their "special days". It was often the oldest of my girls, the one who would panic easily, and only when the boar chased her. She really doesn't like to get touched on her behind, so with the bad cage setup it caused her to get stuck and, of course, panic. The others only made the sounds like once. Since we changed the layout of the cage it hasn't happend once and I hope it stays that way. Even though I can calm them down easily by just talking to them, giving them hay or letting them smell my hand, it's like a nightmare to get woken up at 4 am by a panicked guinea pig chirping! It's really loud too. I always felt like a mother who calms down a crying child when I got to their room 🥺 I'm still glad we changed the cage layout
That is exactly how it feels! Waking up to the sound makes me feel like a mother who's child had a nightmare! Whenever I hear it I immediately get up and go check on them 😅
I'm so glad I watched this video a few days after you posted it! I have never heard my guinea pigs chirp until today, and I would have been totally freaked out without the knowledge you shared. My guinea pig, Rudy, sat in his hidey chirping after I put a new fleece tunnel in the cage in the spot where the older one is normally placed as part of the bedtime routine. The new tunnel is the same type as the old one, but, being new, it is much fluffier. I don't think Rudy likes it. When I placed the new tunnel in the spot, he crawled into it, crawled right back out, went into his hidey and started chirping incessantly. I immediately knew he was stressed and replaced the new tunnel with the old one. Then I picked him up and cuddled him for a few minutes. When I put him back in the cage, he went into the old tunnel and was content. Problem solved! Thanks again for sharing this great information!!
Your piggies are absolutely gorgeous. My piggies were going crazy trying to figure out where the piggy noises from the video we're coming from. They thought they were going to be making new friends ❤
What's funny about my guinea pig taffy is when She sees me, hears me, or when i am handing her food, she will Let out the most Adorable loud week of joy & it warms my heart hearing her, She's very spoiled & well loved getting all of the pets, Non noms, Roams, & is just sassy in general, like she thinks she's a human she is that spoiled, she's always very tame, i bonded with her when she was about 5 weeks old, I love my squeak potato!💖
I have encountered all of them!! The chirping is fascinating, happend twice during the night time. I indeed started to look around to see if a bird had someway gotten into the house. Only to realise it was coming from the cage. I felt a little bad for my piggy as it is known to be an unpleasant experience for them, but I also felt amazed. The dramatic scream happend with one of my girls that was bullied by her cage mate. Panick, running and hiding all while screaming exactly the same way Lulu did.
Thank you for showing Minnie's wheek! My new piggy pompon has done that since day one and I was terrified it was some kind of respiratory issue she could've caught on the way from the breeder to her new home. I'm really glad it's just her lil quirk!
Our oldest piggie made the chirping sound, we had no idea for the reason as it didn’t seem to be anything that was stressing him out and I’m sure he was wide awake, at that time, he was the only guinea pig
Hi ! All of your informations were super cute and I totally agreed with them, except for the chirping one. One of my pigs like to chirp quite often (more or less twice a week), and in periods of time when she’s not stressed at all. Instead, I would rather say she chirp to express a strong emotion, whether it is fear, joy, excitement, etc… She really likes to sing after a particularly good evening, when all the humans were around here and petting her or playing with her, and when she goes back to her to her little house, she sings, to express the happiness she had. It took us a while to figure it out tho, as she could chirp in basically any random day without particular stress going on
Our piggie sometimes used to do something we called “bagpiping”. He inflated himself up hugely and “wheeked” repeatedly, but it was so breathy and high pitched that very little sound actually came out, despite what seemed like huge exertion. Aww, we miss you, Munchies!
The freeze frame on this video is so flippin' cute. I just got a couple new piggies. I naming them Holmes and Watson. If I get to go to Heaven it will be on a meadow covered in piggies.
We have two chirpers in our herd; the Daddy and his Mini Me that looks just like him but is female. It only happens in the middle of the night and they don’t seem stressed. It does happen when she is in heat though and even with him though he is fixed. I have a few of them recorded.
I love Lulu's dramatic wheek. I heard one of my pigs chirp twice; we were on vacation and had taken the pigs with us, I think she heard something outside.
So cute!! I do have 1 guinea pig, that clicks, usually when she is being stoked, she just starts to click evey second or so, it's defo not a chutter or anything like that, kept guineas for 20 years and never heard one click like this
I have the loudest piggie ever. He was given up as owner's family complained about him being too loud. And he screams for veggies and attention! I've never had piggie this loud before, he can wake the whole house, easily! And is always proud when he does so. I have to stick to schedule to stop him begging for the food at 4am just because I turned around in my bed. Now he's counterconditioned to the sound of my alarm as signal he's being fed. But I hear him mutter to himself in disgust that he has to wait!

I've had my guinea pig for 4 years and she woke me up chirping, I always worry even though it seems to be another piggie stealing her food 😅 However, she's been making this noise daily when my partner is home (bc I'm in hospital) so I'm hoping she's missing me (especially as I sneak extra veggies from her sometimes 😂)

I've heard the thumping too. My late Chewy pig used to back himself into a corner and do a some repetitive motion where his back foot was knocking against the plexiglass wall, which acted like a drum and was loud enough to wake me up. It took a minute, as you said, to figure out where it was coming from.
Thank you for the info. I woke up at around 3:30 to my Guinea pigs chirping. I just thought it was my imagination until I watched this video and the chirping sound was exactly what I heard when woke up to the chirping. Now I know I’m not insane👌
The dramatic wheek had my kids asking if our little drama queen was making it or it was on tv. I had to laugh because said drama queen was watching and had a look of "veggies coming?" when it came on. And she does the same unusual wheek that nugget does.
1:50 I used to work at a petsmart and when I brought hay into the isolation room to feed the sick guinea pigs after giving them medicine, there was always one or two that would make this noise.
Thank you for the adorable sight of all your guinea-pigs lined up eating watermelon!!! So cute!!! 💕💕💕 The second sounds in your clip we thought of as a guinea-pig "crying". Our guinea-pigs made this sound if we kept them in our lap for too long, and they got desperate to pee. Or guinea-pigs wanted to avoid to pee on us, maybe more than what was really good for them. Maybe because of what happened the very first time that happened: ...I guess we were really to young to have guinea-pigs, when we first got them...especially my sister who is 4 years younger than me... ;) When we had just gotten them home from the pet-store each in an empty cardboard box, on our laps in the backseat of the car and carried carefully inside, we got them out straigt onto or laps, "to confort them", as we had no idea they'd probably been much happier to get to go hyde together in some hay, without human company. (Maybe one of our parents were preparing their cage, that we got from the pet-store in the same time as the guinea-pigs.) Of course, soon the terrified guinea-pig in my sisters lap, soon had to wee. My sisters reaction to that was to start to cry (very loudly, like the little girl she was at the time...). Maybe that made our guinea-pigs "traumatised" and for all future really unhappy to pee on us?? Anyway, if they made that sound, they were desperate to be put back and wee... For the "Give us lettuce"-squeek, we made the "human words transformation" (in Swedish), that they where calling "Maten hitåt! Maten hitåt!" (Meening: 'The food this way!' or 'Food here!') They especially did it when someone (whoever in the family) got in to the kitchen (where the piggies lived) to get breakfast in the morning (We all had different schedules, and they usually convinced all of us that none else had given ANYTHING AT ALL TO EAT...each and every morning... Gulable humans! ), or when the fridge was opened, or when the kitchen back-door was opened (through which we went outside to get them fresh gras from outside, in the summer when there were any. Our dad liked to provoce theguinea-pigs to squeek evenmore and louder, when he got them grass, by opening and closing the back-door handle over and over again. Me and my sister found that so cruel! ). Life is more fun with guinea-pigs as family members!!!
Thank youuu, the vid was super helpful! My Waffle makes this first noise, and it was hard to understand at first. We thought maybe she had some heart problems as it sounded a bit like she had troubles breathing, but the vet said she's okay. Turned out she has these kinds of panic attacks when her sister is a bit mean to her or when she leaves her - and Waffle always needs attention, she's literally the baby. Luckily, she's a big girl now and it happens once a few months now, and I just need to help her calm down and give a treat. Ans who said piggies don't have complicated emotions?
I’ve had some weird ones. LOL. One of mine sounded like an old Nintendo selection screen when he wheeked. (Woooop, woooopp, weep weep weep). I had another who used to silently wheek too, so all you hear was the wheek click and huffing air. lol. Another whistled back when someone was whistling in the house (like a human whistle). And let’s not forget the drama-bomb “huuuuuuuu! Huuuuuuu!” (Nothing dangerous is happening at all. Nothing). lol
I have one who chirps not sure which one but as soon as I hear it I check the herd. It stops when they see me and I give them a little pep talk followed by some kibble or hay wither they need it or not. The one I think it is, Millie likes to pester her family members until they get tired of it and retaliate. When I check the cage she's usually by herself which is odd.
Once my mom was freaking out because she heard a chirping noise coming from upstairs (where our guinea pigs are) I run up there and turns out one of my guineas was under the little blanket tent I had for them for the winter months and had thought she was stuck and had been chirping her head off. I lifted up a flap and she looked at me and ran over to me ;0; the sweet silly baby!
I'm glad you put the chirping noise that guinea pigs make in there because I kept thinking it was my parakeets. I have three Bird's🐦 & eight guinea pigs.🐹 Now I know it was my little piggie.👍🏼 Now I'm left to figure out who it was, & the problem!🤞🏼😁✌🏼
Thank you so much for this video it explained so much but after six years I've kind of figured the noises out. Nevertheless it always helps to have an experienced Pigger Confirm the weeks!✔ 🐹 week week week❤🎀✌🏼🖖🏼 THANK You! looking forward to your next VIDEO.
I'm late to this video. My girls would chirp a lot and when they did all the other piggies would stop and stay quiet. Someone once said it was like they were calling the mother ship. It's very strange. They just did it. Not stressed or anything.
My rats do the thumping thing too! It took me ages to figure out since my first few didn't do it, but I eventually had one who always scritched behind his ears while sitting on a top shelf, making a horribly loud whacking noise in the middle of the night!
I've caught one of my piggies chirping ONCE and it was such a surreal experience

Ive had pigs for 6 years and ive JUST HEARD IT its midnight here and i immediately texted my other friends, worried that something was medically wrong. I looked it up and google took me here wich im VERY thankful for! I asumed something was wrong with the water spicet (my male was sucking on it) but nope!
I was watching this with my guinea pig and he went crazy looking around after hearijg the intro
Oh Minnie, Sylvester & Maximus, we miss you so ❤❤❤
I have had four guinea pigs in total. One of them had high-pitched voice. omg my ears almost started bleeding everytime he asked for snack.. :DD
One time I woke up at 4 am to chirping. Genuinely thought there was a bird in my room. My Guinea pigs looked like they were just vibing though
3 30 am
The dramatic wheek had my kids asking if our little drama queen was making it or it was on tv. I had to laugh because said drama queen was watching and had a look of "veggies coming?" when it came on. And she does the same unusual wheek that nugget does.
1:50 I used to work at a petsmart and when I brought hay into the isolation room to feed the sick guinea pigs after giving them medicine, there was always one or two that would make this noise.
I love the weeks. You missed Guinea pigs cooing which means they are happy
One of my guinea pigs has a very unique wheek as well. She mainly does it for food. But sometimes just randomly too.
Such a great video :) Always love learning more about how different animals communicate.
Thank you for the adorable sight of all your guinea-pigs lined up eating watermelon!!!
So cute!!! 💕💕💕
The second sounds in your clip we thought of as a guinea-pig "crying". Our guinea-pigs made this sound if we kept them in our lap for too long, and they got desperate to pee.
Or guinea-pigs wanted to avoid to pee on us, maybe more than what was really good for them. Maybe because of what happened the very first time that happened:
...I guess we were really to young to have guinea-pigs, when we first got them...especially my sister who is 4 years younger than me... ;) When we had just gotten them home from the pet-store each in an empty cardboard box, on our laps in the backseat of the car and carried carefully inside, we got them out straigt onto or laps, "to confort them", as we had no idea they'd probably been much happier to get to go hyde together in some hay, without human company. (Maybe one of our parents were preparing their cage, that we got from the pet-store in the same time as the guinea-pigs.)
Of course, soon the terrified guinea-pig in my sisters lap, soon had to wee.
Gulable humans! ), or when the fridge was opened, or when the kitchen back-door was opened (through which we went outside to get them fresh
gras from outside, in the summer when there were any. Our dad liked to provoce theguinea-pigs to squeek evenmore and louder, when he got them grass, by opening and closing the back-door handle over and over again. Me and my sister found that so cruel! ).
Life is more fun with guinea-pigs as family members!!!
Aww you can hear gatsbe breathing and trying to muster a wheel that sound like a squeak to me
Love your show.
Ans who said piggies don't have complicated emotions?
one of my guinea pigs does the second one when my other guinea pigs go to close when she’s trying to sleep, very dramatic haha
Nothing). lol
I love how Lulu just sits there and squeaks rather than.. y'know.. move 😅 Mine would do the same when her cage mate would bother her.
Oh Gatsby is so precious!
Another cute video of your piggies. 😍💖
My guinea pig usually makes the super loud squeak when he's hungry haha
I have a guinea baby that is sooo so dramatic. She’s so cuuute
Once my mom was freaking out because she heard a chirping noise coming from upstairs (where our guinea pigs are) I run up there and turns out one of my guineas was under the little blanket tent I had for them for the winter months and had thought she was stuck and had been chirping her head off. I lifted up a flap and she looked at me and ran over to me ;0; the sweet silly baby!
hahah my 2 piggies have them all.except chirping..even the asthmatic wheeking sometimes..u missed out the helicopter purring..lol
One of my pigs always wheeks with her mouth wide open. They are very loud and very funny ❤️.
I'm glad you put the chirping noise that guinea pigs make in there because I kept thinking it was my parakeets.
I have three Bird's🐦 & eight guinea pigs.🐹
Now I know it was my little piggie.👍🏼
Now I'm left to figure out who it was, & the problem!🤞🏼😁✌🏼
Thank you so much for this video it explained so much but after six years I've kind of figured the noises out. Nevertheless it always helps to have an experienced Pigger
Confirm the weeks!✔
🐹 week week week❤🎀✌🏼🖖🏼 THANK You! looking forward to your next VIDEO.
One of my piggies used to chirp whenever the dog got too close to the cage. It really does sound just like a little bird!
I heard about a rare « song » they do, usually at night ^^ I watched a video on YT and that was impressive !!
