Canon 5DS R Real World Review

- This is a "Real World Review" of the Canon 5DS R from the Grand Canyon. I had the pleasure of taking this camera along for the ride as we camped at the Grand Canyon. My goal as always was to review this camera in a real world situation not a lab.

Let's start with who this camera is for. This is a Landscape and Portrait camera in my opinion. What separates the 5DS R from the 5DS is the first one has a low pass cancelation effected in the camera. This means if you are shooting fine patterns it's possible that you may get some moire.
The 5DS R is basically the same exact camera layout and design as the 5D Mark III. This means anyone picking it up for the first time will not have any trouble figuring out how to use it. There are only a few subtle menu differences between the two cameras.

Hey Fro I do no regularly comment on youtube videos but I just had to say the way you guys upped the production value for this review is unreal! Very impressed and keep up the awesome work. Brother of the faith, Q.
Jonathan Quigley thanks.
Thanks Jared for real world reviews. So many spec chasers and it's all about getting out there and shooting. Love these reviews. I got a D500 last week from Allen's and couldn't be happier.
"You will never outrun 150k shutter actuations" is a crazy bold statement. I sold my 5D II with 280k shutter and my 6D is 100k already. 150k actually isn't that much - for working photographer it is just for 2-3 years, for those who shoot weddings even less...
***** two years on my 6D, closing in on 150k as a professional.
***** I'm no photographer, just do amateur astro imaging and when I heard the 150K estimate even I thought professionals could hit that mark and it wouldn't take that long to do so. I can only imagine he meant it for the consumer hobbyist.
John S If you are doing sports. Maybe if you get a lot of weddings and just take a lot of random pics.
***** I share my 5dmk3, 6d, 7d with 2 other photographer, we shoot on alternative days (1,4 I shoot and 2,3,5 the other 2 so when we aren't shooting we are editing) for wedding, sports, events and on average shoot 2000+ shots each person (about 6000 shots a week), the 150000 actuations only last us 6 months at most
***** Right! My shutter count on 6d is already 45.000 for a half year wedding shoots
Really nice job man! Dont worry about the haters! This is the cleanest review yet!
Jared, thank you for being a non-biased Nikon Shooter and giving this camera a great review.
1995billy Is this a joke? He is sponsored Nikon shooter, and ever since appearance on Scott Kelby's (Canons mouthpiece) show he didn't say anything negative about Canon.
ObelixCMM You do realize he's been reviewing Canon camera's longer than 5 months ago right? 7D Mark II review for example.
7D mk II review was requisite to make it to Kelby's show
6D
I'm not saying he didn't review Canon before, but starting with 7D mk II it changed. When he reviewed 7D mk II only pro Canon reviewers had access to it
FroKnowsPhoto StephenEckertPhoto this is probably THE SINGLE BEST shot and edited video by you - I salute that. Amazing work guys - love to see you evolve...Moving camera, DJI drone, backlit footage - just great!
Canon payed for everything, I bet
Antonio Alcala maybe some of the footage was shot by canon aswell and given to the reviewers as stock videos. But thats only an assumption.
Antonio Alcala Canon did not pay one penny for anything. I funded the entire trip out of my own pocket.
Rick Scott No, canon did not give us anything. Extra b roll came from VideoBlocks and audio came from AudioBlocks
Antonio Alcala like it matters even if Canon did. The video i beautifully done! Kudos goes to Jared no matter what. Jared Polin
Love the video Jared. You consistently produce high-quality stills and video content which makes it easy for me to take your opinion seriously and recommend you to friends. I want to be where you are in a few years.
Great stuff. Relevant even in 2022. I like you attitude about getting great results. I’ve always felt the same way and not so worried about 600 features just taking great photos.
Excellent video. The production value keeps getting better and better. Outstanding work guys!!
This is probably the best put together video you've done! All the "B" roll and music just amps it up and takes it to the next level.
Other reviewers need to do reviews like this. Excellent job. real world reviews are awesome. Thank you.
I get what youre saying Wayne, it like they are trying to manipulate, control one's expenditures when it comes spending on photo related stuff. Assuming, one would stay with them since they had the greater market share or the best product at one time.
This video makes me want to go on an adventure with my camera soooooo badly!
Hey jared. I know you were a Nikon shooter in the past. Nowadays do you shoot with both or you keep loyal to Nikon? This is a great camera and I wonder if you would choose it over the Nikon 810. Greetings from Brazil
Disagree on the 150k shutter actuations. You sounded too much like a salesman.
yup!
Fair comment, but I’d argue the point is valid. Hobbyists aren’t ever going to have to worry about shutter count because they won’t reach it. Professionals who make a living off their Photography won’t give a crap either because it won’t be their only camera anyway. If it is, it’ll have paid for itself 20x over anyway - by which point they’d probably getting something else too....
Hey Jared I don't want you to take this the wrong way but out of all the photos I've seen you take these are the best ones ever shot.
Jared. This is a great review video. I really enjoyed watching this video. I like to request if you can do a 5 min portrait video in the studio or in your loft (preferably with Maria) LOl showing how the 5dsr works shooting portraits of people & showing the detail of the camera. Thanks & again great video.
Bought one of these yesterday for my macro work at a ridiculously cheap price, can't wait to try it out.
Checking out your photos from the Canyon/Canon 5DS R. Awesome photos love it. I can't get over how far I can zoom in on the computer. I find a shrub or rock, zoom in then back it out, incredible.
Badass...finally a camera that is not being designed around video. A still camera made for still photographer. What a concept. I want one minus file size due to FTP uploads.
You mentioned this camera is UHS 1 compatible, but I assume that means it’s still able to utilize UHS 2 & 3 cards now correct? I know this camera is considered ancient now but I’m looking for a B camera mostly for events and high fashion studio stills to compliment my EOS R I use for studio and video and I’m very interested in this MP count for the price now!
I love the music, it makes me feel like I'm watching something on PBS from the 90s. :)
Jared, just wanted to say this is by far one of the best reviews of this camera that I have seen so far. Thanks for keeping it real bro. I brought this camera based on this review when I watched it last week. Peace
Those are some really nice shots; I'm liking this camera the more I see reviews about it.
I shot the Grand Canyons and the red mountains of Sedona 3 weeks ago and I must say.. I dont see any differences between this modern camera and my old Canon 5D Mark1!!
There are differences, modern one are just a hipe that costs a lot. 😅
I would love this camera for next week when I go up into the Rockies. Maybe I'll rent one next time I go. My 6D does alright and I shoot a lot of medium format up there. (Large format is a hassle, but I'll bring my 4x5 this time)
What an amazing review with such awesome production value. Love it. Was all of that music from audio blocks? Keep the great videos coming.
Very impressed with the resolution of this camera! I don't really like to crop images of you fill the frame correctly then there is no need but good to know that you could with the great resolution of this camera.
Really enjoyed the quality of this video, it's probably the best one I've seen from you guys, keep up the good work. The only criticism I have is that sometimes the parts in the loft were too quick and when it cut back to the broll and other parts it felt a little choppy at times but overall very nice video keep up the good work Jared and Steven abd thanks for all the great content you guys put out.
Great production quality on this video Jared. You stated you were going to step up your game in your videos and this proves you are heading in the right direction. Thanks as usual for all the great content
Just bough one only taken a handful of shots with it so far not even looked at them on the computer yet, but taking it out tomorrow for a good test, of course in England we ain't got the Grand Canyon, but we do have Bolton Abbey, if the weather is nice.
Bought this in 2015. Not that many issues with Moire, can count that on one hand. I often use it at night at well, mostly at night in fact. Got great results, not pushing the iso too far. Not an issue at all. But time changes and I will switch camera this year. I see the R5 is coming, but I also believe Canon has something more up their Sleeve. R5 might be sufficient though, with all the great RF-lenses out there.
This is a video I DID NOT want to end. I love the way you put the video B roll and the stills in there with the cool music. Very well done. Your loft scenes appeared to be a little on the darker side however. But nevertheless this is an excellent piece of work. Thanks for sharing this!
Gracebeliever077 The loft is exposed properly on our end.
Jared Polin OK. Thanks. Your Fro seemed darker to me....ahhh....culprit just doscovered. Wife changed some settings on the monitor I was not aware of. As you were. Problem solved.
Have to admit, hard not to sit down and take in the view and breathe in the air when in the presence of such a marvel.
I have about 1.000.000 shutter count on my 5d mark3, and about the same on 2x5d mark2 (don't remember how many was on original 5d)
Thanks Jared, first time I ever heard noise getting praised as an advantage. Wonders never cease!
Hey, really high production value on this one and also awesome photos.
One thing, though: I guess this trip was sponsored by canon? Just judging by the amount of vehicles / camp / and the fact that you are holding cam #21 in your hands.
You should really add such informations into the video description and / or say it in the beginning of the video.
If i'm wrong ignore this.
I also dislike that canon removed the headphone jack on those two... just an unessecary move imo, even if they are not meant for video because they are missing 60fps or 4k anyways.
I think your intuition, is right on, Jared only makes half ass crappy videos of cameras or lenses, on children soccer fields, and suddenly he has this huge production, surely Canon payed for this, and the Fro loooovees money so..
Antonio Alcala He needs to do full disclosure, then i'm ok with it. But i can't rely on information from him when i don't know if canon, rode or any other company with products he is testing is giving him money. When i know: Oh this video is payed for by canon, then it gets a lot easier for me to abstract.
Antonio Alcala +1 and I would add that this was not a 'review', it was an 'advertisement'.
Rick Scott Are you guys kidding me right now? Reading comments that say "the quality of this video is so good that Canon must have paid him". Get a life, seriously, get a life.
Rick, don't leave a comment ripping me and saying that I got paid by cannon and than leaving yourself an out by saying Ignore this if you're wrong. YOU ARE DEAD WRONG, DEAD. You leave a comment like this and someone else reads it and thinks it's a fact and says "oh he needs to tell us it's an ad".
Thanks
You guys are wrong. Completely uninformed. Jared has surrounded himself with talent and people who know what they are doing. The quality of the video is a testament to his passion and hard work and Steven, Todd and anyone else behind scenes. If you even listen to half of his stuff you know Jared does it his way, not what others want him to do. Get a life with the paid for by Canon stuff.
Brilliant as always Jared!!
Excellent review Jared, although I don't think I am ready yet for this camera, I am for now happy with my 5D MK III but who knows what the future will bring!
Incredible!!! What an awesome production!!! really higk quality review!!! Congratulation to you Fro and your Fro Crew!
I like to see a comparison with the new Canon 5DS and the latest Hasselblad. I was wounder if this camera with its high pixels has rendered medium format unnecessary. To see if Medium Format are really 20/30 thousand dollars better?
Rick Mentore No. It hasn't. Medium format is still medium format. There's no way a 35mm sensor can produce the same kind of image of an equivalent medium format sensor. Hell, just look at the difference in the kind of shots you get even with high quality film. There's just something the larger format does to the image that can't be emulated with a smaller frame.
Also your comment assumes medium format systems are going to remain at their current state. They won't, they'll also continue to improve.
Not really. The ability to get shallow depth of field at wider shots is one of the thing a full frame sensor cannot emulate (there are guides on UA-cam how to emulate it with compositing many full frame images of the same person... Crazy work). So for anyone considering wide open medium format his style it is a bit moot, there aren't lenses which give the same look. Same argument as full frame vs crop basically.
But in terms of what Jared showed us today, using it as a normal camera, shooting landscapes, of course you'd go with full frame (or crop!) over a big expensive medium format.
Crop modes can be useful in video, because practically no matter how much you crop you'll still have more than the ~2MP of 1080p video, so you can get "extra reach" without any loss in resolution.
***** Right but this is not a video camera. It makes sense in a 5D MArk III yes but not this camera.
Jared Polin Agree. But it's probably not going to be the last Canon camera that has this feature. The next cameras in the 5D Mark * and 1D-X series should have it. Canon should also push a firmware update to add that, because it's just software . . .
I just watched this video today, because I saw a used one for sale in the camera shop. After this review.... I may just buy it!
Jared I have watched many reviewers, but as a Professional Photographer for over thirty years you are the best I have seen John Deehan London
Fantastic review. Thanks for a wonderful video. It was a joy to watch. Your production quality continues to impress. Your team is doing a stellar job!
Hi +Jared Polin
Refering to the -why- of the crop modes/aspect ratio, the existence of those modes are closely related to the landscape photography style where photographers like me often prefer something closer to a 4/3 ratio than 3/2.
Thanks for the review. Would lens hoods have helped in the harsh sunlight?
Love your videos, the edition, the music. Keep that way.
Shoulda shot some people or portraits. The best way to gauge gradation between color shifts and shadows, is to shoot people. Any camera can usually make landscapes and stills look good. When you shoot people, thats when you notice the strengths or weaknesses of a cameras color and dynamic range.
This video is really quality content!
(Only one small tip/thing, you could use the Arqspin for the shots in the upper right corner in the end, as we seen with Raw Talk center cam some movement is great to make it more alive!)
Those photos are awesome Jared!
Another one of your awesome reviews👌
I'm leaning towards this being my next camera though I don't really feel like this camera is for me (I just can't explain it).... I've looked at it for a while. You can't go wrong with the R over the S, it's only like a couple hundred bucks more and will give you the option to turn the LP off if you don't like it. Come on, 50 Megapixels! Hard to resist. Personally my photography is all over the place: horse sports, flowers, landscapes, animals, lightning, car shows and no video expect on rare occasions. Having the option to change to a 1:4 or 1:6 can come in real handy for sport like turning for the stretch in horse racing etc,. The tracking system would also work well for car racing or horse racing, if you want to track the one on the rail it will lock to them and stay on if another horse comes rushing up to pass them - under a different setting you can change it bump back out to the rushing horse. Same premise for the cars.
I've looked at the 1DX but that is too much camera for me, I don't need 14 FPS for everyday shooting even though I'd love it just to say I have it. If the 7D Mark II was a full frame with the options like the 5DS R to go to a 1:4 or 1:6 I'd be all over that. My current camera does 5 FPS and I often feel like I need more than that so maybe I could deal as long as I don't try any other cameras. Don't know, maybe I'm just anxious about stepping up for a T4i to something better for my new job though I'll still be shooting more in my free time.
KVProduction92 You can't turn the filter on or off. It's always sensor stack will always be negating the AA filter.
KVProduction92 You can't actually turn the LP on and off as Chip said, but I've seen and heard a whole lot of people say that. I guess it needs to be made easier to understand. But they came out with two models for a reason. Still, if you have an actual camera shop near you, you should go and handle some cameras since you don't feel like this one is the right on for you. They should be able to point you in the right direction if your price range includes a 1D X
Why someone would dislike this very informative provided video??
What a great review and again I think it's pretty obvious Jared's ability to say pros and cons whether if it's a Canon or a Nikon or Sony with a great professionalism and not only to bash Canon and exalt Nikon as many believe!
But I think the real problem is that people don't wanna hear his/her camera has flaws!
So until we all together agree that no camera is perfect a Canon reviewer will always be regarded as a Canon fanboy who bashes Nikon and vice versa if he's a Nikon user!
But the best thing to do would be trying to see the pro photographer behind the brand he's shooting with and trying to see he's giving a honest opinion from his point of view!
Great job Jared as always!
Jared Polin wow the video quality of your videos has really gone up since Todd is onboard. Keep the good work man, those were amazing pictures thanks
Awesome video, very cool to see the the use of videoblocks and audioblocks :) very seamless.
Great review Jared. Supreme production and great images. Thumbs up!
5DS-R and Canon 11-24mm f/4 that's an awesome landscape combination!
Nice review good to see that the Grand Canyon trip tributes to so many awesome videos in this high quality.
Maybe a little excessive on the clips but okay. heard a lot of talking of the content, the this trip was giving, but never thought this much and i'll watch them all. "tv-show" was great
Great review! Very high production value. About the camera, 150,000 shutter actuations seems pretty low.
As always informative. Well done!
Great work man ! really good review !
I just check out those sample photo's Raw files. ( Grand Canyon 5dsr 181 ).
Few thing's what i noticed. When i zoom 1:1 it seems to have bit more noise with ISO 100 than what i have used to my another company dslr.
Another thing is that 35mm lens, is it really giving that much distort with edges?
Looks other ways good 8688 x 5792px is large image to crop true... but there ain't really anything what would me wanna turn back to Canon dslr's... Those are just so way behind other Manufactures, but i am not saying that there is anything wrong with Canon, just not for one to my hand... :D
Now that was a well put comment. Thank you.
Jared, if the production value of this review is any indication of the new upcoming show, it looks like it will be well worth watching 😊
Really appreciate the production quality in this video. Great stuff!
Jared, love your stuff dude. As a newbie I have a question. I currently have a Canon 80D DSLR, using a canon 16-35, Tamron 24-70 and Tamron 70-200. My question is if I switch to the canon 5dslr I dont have to get new lenses. My current lenses will work on the new camera? Thanks sie keep up the amazing work
I am an aviation photographer who sometimes takes landscapes as well. I typically take photos of fast moving objects "planes" sometimes somewhat far away. Do you think this camera would be good for that? I currently have a T6 which was a great intro camera but I feel like its time to upgrade. The 50MPs is what got me with this camera. Whenever I edited photos that I took with my T6, there was plenty of visual noise in the photo; that is something I am definitely wanting to get rid of. I heard the 5DS R has a good quick AF too so thats another reason why I am considering it. I appreciate any help in advance!
Opened the DNG files and was worried about how much noise was there, then I realized you messed around with the image in lightroom. The noise at 3200 isn't even bad, its about comparable to a 5D mark 2.
Great video, i like the idea of sharing the RAW files ....
Geee there's some terrible comments on here about Jared Polin even from those who have been sub'd to him for many years. If you are questioning his authenticity at this stage in the game then I have to wonder what are you guys watching? And no, I wasnt paid to say this! hahaha
Brilliant production and great real world review. Certainly positioned the camera as a niche camera - not an all around work horse. Would love to see you use it in the studio Jared!
Another great video mate... i will need to start putting aside the pocket money though, as these puppies arent cheap. Thouh, you have inspired me to head up the mountains west of Sydney and see what i can manage with a D7100.
I agree with the low light display on the Canon 5DSR internet display.
I find it extremely hard to see the internal display especially if I try shoot vertically ... I find myself turning the camera into Portrait Mode to see the display, set for the light meter, then turning the camera back into the vertical position to take the shot.
I was starting to think it was my eyes.
Is there anyway to lighting up the display?
Thanks
Gordon
Would really like to know which drone was used for the aerial shots! Really adds quality to the production!
Good morning, thank you for sharing your raw files. I must say owning a Nikon D810, after pixel peeping I found the images to have an incredible amount of noise even at 1:1. I would think that would make it difficult for landscape work wouldn't you ?
daryl desjardins I took both of those cameras out there and I am happy with both.
daryl desjardins the d810 has around 2 stops more of dr which is huge, its in the deep shadow that the 5ds suffers
Love Bror Svensson I would agree, I thought the 5ds would perform better, or should I say, I hopped it would have performed better. We all want more megapixels, but we want them clean.
when a7rii comes out it will exlpode the market
"I took them both out there, and I am happy with both" , what a convenient way to respond without affecting any body that sponsors you Jared, you sound like a corrupt politician.
So. Which camera is best for videos ?
Really great review, thank you for sharing your thoughts and putting this out there. However I am a little confused when you said dynamic range isnt part using the camera in the real world... to me dynamic range of a single raw exposure seems more important now then ever, especially with these high pixel image sensors. Would love to see some shots where you really pushed the limits of the sensors dynamic range, how much can you pull from the shadows before noise starts to get out of control 2 or 3 stops? Anyway great work and keep it up! Oh and looks like it was an aaaaamazing trip!
How about you expose correctly
Há, Jared, what tripod would you recommend for it? I like traveling and doing Urbex/landscapes/urban scapes etc.. but I don't mind carrying a bit of weight. Good for my shape! :D
Amazing Video. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Hi Jared!
Do you recommend the 5DsR for food photography?
Adrián Gómez I am not Jared, obviously, but I think that that is great idea. Imagine the details you get.
Fabulous review Jared, so down to earth!
+Jared polin you need the crop factor if you are shooting with crop sensor lens.
Crap lenses, sorry, crop lenses on this camera = you are misusing it.
huehuehuehue nice one...
The 50 MP means there won't be much moire, so no one needs the 5DS. The 5DSR with no OLPF is the sharpest DSLR there is.
What I like about you, is you're an artist using the camera as a tool, rather than worshipping a piece of hardware. Very well done.
Hey Jared how are you? I'm from Argentina. I'm using a Canon 6d for my fashion photography work. The only reason why I use this camera is the built in wifi function. I have several clients that need to see the picture at the momento is taken and sometimes I can't tethered shoot to my MBP because we are on location and I end up with my computer covered in dust and I don't have another one. I want to upgrade to a better camera with better autofocus, more mp (they crop images from a full body to a portrait) and I need wifi. But canon didn't put built in wifi on their new cameras. What do you recommend? Eye fi sd cards? External wifi devices? Thanks and I hope you understand !
Need Lightroom 6 to edit photos (unless u convert to dng file...instead of 50meg file, u get approx 42megs). And it takes twice as long to edit the larger files compared to 5Dmk3 photos. However, I love the resolution of the 5DSR photos. The pics r so sharp compared to 5Dmk3. It is my new primary camera.
PzTiger _ You do not need LR 6 to edit those files. I exported them to work all the way back to 4.
How did u manage that? I tried to import and lightroom 5 could not read file. Had to pay $80 to upgrade to lightroom 6.. then import worked fine
The production quality is much improved in this review compared to the last camera review (the last review wasn't bad either).
Another awesome review 😁 thank you JP
Great video, great camera. The grand canyon doesn't really excite me and isn't very photogenic in my opinion though.
Jared Hogie Are you saying you see one deep canyon you've seen them all? I respectfully disagreed, but to give the GC some justice shooting it from a few different locations will show it's different looks. One of the things I liked about Jered's shooting is bringing in the amazing clouds into the subject, in some ways they were as interesting to me as the canyon itself. But that just shows hes a professional and I'm not! I was really impressed with the camera's performance, the clarity and color rendition were mind blowing from my perspective. Even the tiny background mountains were tack sharp, I wish I could magnify the images and go exploring. A panoramic shot would have been cool as well.
I'm canon user. And remember when you talked about sometimes canon gives you photos little bit out of focus? I agree with you. But did you faced the problem with the 5Dsr?
Did you use any polarizer for the photos you took.Looks like you were using C-Polarizer?
best piece of content ever released on this channel!
Enjoyed the review, Jared! My next camera, for sure.
Jared, On these RAW files that I loaded.....did you take these shots hand held or on a tripod?
Such a helpful review, thank you!
It's a good production. I can see why the haters go on. But that's their lot in life. I thought this was a very nice review and you're not the only Nikoner, who thinks it's a great camera.
ChakraW Finally, I had to scroll this way down just to see this positive comment from a Nikoner. I mean those people (not all) are really haters and insecure shooters with fear that this camera really kicks ass!
Aside from the 5DsR (Not a landscape/fine art/portrait shooter), this is HUGE production value you've got right there. Did you start hiring a professional video production company for your channel? I certainly hope all your next videos are at this level, this sets the bar so high. Whoever shot this, this is amazing footage!
Wow great video guys!
have to give you credit bud, may well have just done the best review of the 5Ds/sr so far, and in my opinion one of the best to note over the past year or two, I may have to click that sub button and keep an eye out for more of these great reviews *thumbs up
150k shutter actuations is just an average. It's usually go over than that without big problem.
I have seen a 5Dmk2 go to 500k shutter actuations and keep going. If your shutter have problem, you can replace the shutter and here we go again.
I have heard of some camera that go above 1 millions.
love this camera, love to see its second gen. awesome for wildlife and birds and landscape
