- In some aspects, Generation Zero is a competent product. The guns feel nice to shoot, the game is pretty to look at, and sound design is on point. But aside from technically performing as a videogame, there’s just nothing that exciting about playing it. There’s nothing particularly interesting about what Generation Zero does or how it does it. L
ooking back at developer Avalanche’s previous efforts such as Mad Max and the Just Cause titles that just oozed with personality, it's strange how vanilla Generation Zero is. Here’s hoping that Avalanche Studios can take this good idea and create something great out of it in the future.

He meant with “lack of personality” as there’s no clear point as what to do after. I can go ape shit with zombies vs robots on Venus during year 3000, unique? Yes, but if my game has no clear purpose, then it lacks the personality, even if the game has a lot of fun things to do.
that is just the outer shell, a good idea, not more. but on the inside it's lacking fun and personality.

Bethesda originally did a Terminator game decades ago. If they could get rights for it again that would be on such high demand. Ive often thought myself why this doesn't already exist.
There is one already. It's called Terminator: Resistance. I would highly recommend trying it out. It is a bit clunky and the animations are kinda lame, but it really immerses you in the post-apocalyptic world dominated by Skynet. Also, it's not really open-world, but it does have quite a few side quests and allows some degree of exploration.
It's basically theHunter Call of the Wild with robot deers.
I just love their graphic engine.
I really like the game. It's easy to pick up and doesn't consume too much time.
And it only costs 35 - 40 bucks...
Thats good. It seems to understand what works with a Shooter Looter. The only thing missing is some sort of little story, shame given that looters work well with narratives, Aka Diablo and Borderlands, but if gameplay works well? There is no real problem.
I really agree to you and I also have to say it is optimized pretty well for pc. I only got an i3 with 2 cores, 3,9 GHz each, combined with a GTX 1050 ti and 16 GB of RAM and with everything maxed out I constantly get 30 - 40 frames per second.

Have been playing the game for around two hours with my friends and we're having a blast. You can experiment so much with items you pick up. It's a easy game to play with friends, not so complicated and i feel relaxed when i'm playing it. Also living in Sweden makes the game so much more fun.
I think I can like almost any game for the first few hours, but how about now a week later? Still worth it or nah?
It still worth it, many places to explore and bigger robots after a while. But I always play with friends, so we make the game fun :-)

Regarding that the houses look the same ... in sweden because of the welfare during the 80s they mass-built houses after the same drawings to keep up with the increase in population, so some streets could have a dozen exactly identical houses with the same construction.
1. You are right about Sweden having just a few standardized house models that were extremely commonplace throught the post world war 2 era.

Why do people keep on calling it a "survival" looter shooter?
There are literally NO survival elements in the game...
It is an arcade shooter made with co op and loot in mind.
And why does no one mention how it is half price compared to Most other new releases.
Or the fact it is NOT a AAA game meaning it had neither manpower or budget of a AAA game.
Everyone Reeeees their ass of as as soon a game has rng lootboxes and mt's in it (as they should).
But at the same time NO ONE mentions the fact you FIND all cosmetics while playing this game while at the same time.... no lootboxes or mt's.
It is the same fucking principle as fostering a dog or a child, if you Only tell it when it does something bad but never acknowledge when it does something Good you Will fuck them up.
This game should be fucking praised for these points alone.
You get a full game with no lootboxes or mt's in sight.
Decent story, amazing gunplay, graphics and soundeffects.
And all this for 40$...
But no, lets just hold on to our dicks and hope for that next 80$ Anthem wannabe containing lootboxes, season passes and microtransactions.

@@biikuajet I agree dude I absolutely love the game it has a certain charm to it even playing solo it has I nice horror feel to it creeping around rhe machines and just exploring is a dream for me there is lots of mystery to unfold and secrets to find, and the coop is an absolute blast

Well me and my grandson have tons of fun playing this. Though can get a little scary for a 7 yr old lol. Not to mention dying a lot because he's hiding directly behind you so you can move. But still loads of fun playing coop. Like that it's a good shooter without all the adult language. For $19.99 I couldn't pass it up.

I started playing this game with a friend of mine yesterday - 9 hours in and we thought we had spent maybe 4 or 5 hours playing the game. Just goes to show how, in my opinion, the game is a lot of fun and you'll lose track of time while playing it.
I got the game today and played for about 2 hours and felt like even thiugh its not completely story driven. I feel compelled to loot and find more notes or places like citys with more information on what is going on/happened. I really like it so far and actually enjoy the feeling of being alone, with my brother ( who I have been playing with) facing this mysterious world. I couldnt believe it was like $40 newly released canadian, I usually pay $70 - $90 and up for new games.
I'm about 35 hrs in and through 3 1/2 regions. I'm still enjoying it. I believe I've collected all collectibles too, but some dont give an indicator they are there.
It is man I'm really enjoying this game. It's a fresh new idea from the rest of games.
Good review though I generally disagree with criticism on AI. My experience thus far is one were I have to be constantly aware of my surroundings when fighting machines. Dozens of times I have scouted out a location looking for any machines lurking. Only to commit to an attack and be surprised by enemies lurking further away being drawn in to the fight. This is certainly not your typical run and gun FPS. If you don't put some thought into your approach you can easily find yourself overwhelmed and torn apart. I for one am loving it.
Is there an option to change the view so we can see the whole body of our character while in action? or not?

Spent almost 12 hours straight playing this game and i only covered archipelago, barely even scratched the surface of the south coast

Update: now explored all of the minken bunker penensula, still doing a few missions left from the war board, if anyone reading this has a question on where stuff is i can most likley answer them

@Spoggi99 That depends so much of the player and the mood he or she is in.
In short, it is very subjective.
If you like to play alone and have more challenge then go for solo but if you like company and make the game easier then go for coop.
Personally I like them both but they definitely have different feelings.
Btw. that coop is 4 players at max.
I've only played 2 player coop and I expect that 4 player coop might be indeed fun with right players.
I like open games, that doesn't tell you what to do or what needs to be done all the time so this game is a must buy in my book....besides I love robots :P

I've played the game for 14 hours and I wish these UA-camrs would play with other people if it was a co op game and maybe learn more about the game not just the first hour or two of gameplay
IGP did this with one of his friends and it's pretty funny hearing them banter back and forth
The online dosent work muitplayer. I tryed loads keeps saying try again later timed out but when I play other games it works online.

If there were some problems at multiplayer on some platform 4 months ago, the problem isn't there anymore.

I’d almost agree if the price was halved.
But it’s still a lot I paid to loot the same house, barn, garage and bunker over and over again. Every house has the same items in them. Every person in 80’s Sweden had the exact same chess set as well. Every one of em.
Dying does nothing in the game whatsoever. Therefore you may as well be invincible. The game crashes a lot and has a crazy amount of bugs.
It feels incomplete.

You see these enemy's and you discover new creative and fun ways to fight them because they don't instantly shove new enemy types up your bottom

best game i've played in a while, look into what it is before buying it is the only thing you'll have to think about before buying. The co-op is a shit ton of fun!
Has this improved much by now? I see it has DLC and a couple of new weapons but what worries me is it seems to largely be aimless wandering with nothing to do except that barebones main quest.
Two things not covered...is the ending worth reaching? and what happens aftwards...meaning how does the journey continue for veterans?
It's been mislabeled.. This is NOT a survival game in any shape or form.. We are fragile but invincible beings. You do NOT have to fear anything so as long as you have a stack of those abundant stims in your inv. No hunger or thirst mechanic. No building mechanic. No survival. Everything is AMPLE, even ammo.
It's a hunting game. A combat hunting game. The object is to hunt robots and gain levels and equipment to hunt them better.

@@dianuevo8925 its probably because it lacks what Fallout lacks... a few NPCs to spice the world up or some different story or narrative driven enviorement: example: since this sweden it could have been cool to enter an IKEA and finding a Minimalistic Robot, i hope they update the game with some stuff. That way it would be a kickass game.

I generally agree with your reviews. However, I'm loving this game so far. Admittedly, I'm only a few hours in, but I love the exploration aspect. The developers have done well in making you feel tense and apprehensive in a post-invasion apocalyptic world. I've not experienced robots in walls yet. In fact, the AI is good so far. They stand off, rush, circle....keeps you on your toes. I just need to work put how to use all this stuff I'm picking up!?

Great game smooth and fast pace looks amazing feels amazing solo is nerve racking co op easy but so much more fun having friends to play it with personally I say well worth £35 all day
So basically its a Swedish version of Red Dawn but with Robots while having the gameplay depth of No Man's Sky when that was released.
I think the open world in the generation zero is good. The story it's the open world. You are going to find out what is going on. That is the story. HAVE FUN GAMERS!!!

To find what’s going on you have to use your brain, there will be no glowing big arrows leading you. I like it!
It’s immersive and emergent storytelling. Like DayZ back in the day, the stories are about what you find and how you survived (or didn’t).

What i have seen is everyone is not paying attetion to the story and the loot they just killing robots over and over again but if you started learn the machenics and learn more about the game you gonna have fun. I have played this game for a weak now and im still enjoying it btw meeting thos small robots is not a bad idea just wait until you meet the hunters you just need to be wait and prepare for the big changels. I give the game 9/10 just cause of the bugs in this game
This reminds me a lot of a "Dark Mirror" episode I have watched about a year ago. Northern European setting, killer robots roam the country, the last survivors are struggling to live on and there is no explanation whatsoever.

How is the gun play is it more like BF or maybe COD? Or is it more akin to something like metro or fallout games. I’m asking about ps4.
A little in between, maybe more like dying light, it has a good weighty feel but isn't on point arcade shooter like cod or titanfall, but it's not shoddy like fallout 4.
The thing with the houses In sweden most houses in one and same area usualy had the same decoration
Overall I'm really enjoying it - I quite like the bleak empty world ...creates a great contrast when finally some action does come. I prefer it with no music - much vibier. My main gripe is as you mention - how all house interiors are so samey - a real shame...would have loved the devs to have taken a bit more time to create some diversity ...and to be a bit more imaginative in where the loot is stashed - it's always the same kind of locations...all this serves to remind you its just a game - which is a shame considering the hard work and effort that's gone into the countryside environment...every part of which is diff - they should have gone the extra mile and made the buildings/loot stashes all unique too.
I don't really mind about all the comments saying that it doesn't have a story, sometimes all i want is just a game where you can go around, obliterating robots that try to kill you. Is the game pretty good in that area, or no?

I early decided to support this game because I'm swedish, and swedish venues, albeit fictional ones, aren't too commonplace in gaming. I'm loving it because of the setting and atmosphere, it feels kind of like home, exploring the environments of my early childhood. Imo the devs nailed the rural setting. That being said, I agree with the review. If I weren't a swede I probably would consider this another quite generic shooter with not a whole lot going on in it.

They're called runners and seekers... And there's different types of EACH enemy that totes different weapons/armor/and sensory equipment. The gameplay loop only gets boring if you don't experiment. There's TONS of tools at your disposal, get creative and it'll be extremely fun. And the houses have the same layout but they look completely different with different furnishings/loot/and colors which mixes it up....but to each his own :P also there's different variations of ALL loot, different versions of the same guns, attachments, and clothing so you'll always be looking for more! Also some clothes have certain buffs such as fire resistance or bullet resistance, there's layers to what's here and it'll keep you coming back for more
Red dead 2 is shooting people over and over every 10 seconds and it has the same interiors but it's still good. Same with fallout 4, skyrim, pubg, and pretty much every game....you have to make it fun. Also just wanted to say the details in this game are amazing, the brush moves and lays down when you walk on it, if you see lightning in the distance it's most likely headed your way, the particles look amazing in your flashlight and the shadows are incredible, night time is actually dark as hell, it's not scared to use incredible lighting effects, and the day night cycle lasts hours each which is such a relief, the atmosphere is done VERY well in my opinion....i just like the game a lot and if anyone's skeptical definitely give it a try it's a lot of fun if you like finding cool shit and taking your time exploring and taking in the scenery

I still have leftover money from my birthday and i REALLY want to get this game, but then i read all the bad reviews and i was pretty disappointed. So then i went around the internet looking for reasons to get it and found quite alot of people talking about how good it is. If you could tell me the reasons to get it, that would be much appreciated :)
@pepenguin guy Well after the release there have been 4 major updates, one hotfix and smaller fixes, changes and tweaks.
The game just doesn't have the issues it had on release.
Look for Generation Zero update blog from net and you will see how much they have worked to make the game better in so many ways on every platform it has been released.
Avalanche Studios do listen player feedback.
They just got August major update out which has solution for inventory. Now every safehouse has a chest for stuff.
They also added bikes for faster traveling at some point.
I don't know if it's me, but I play this game feeling such an atmosphere of constant tension. Trying to keep my eyes peeled, sneaking around (prolly more than I should but hey) trying to be as stealthy as possible/trying to plan ahead as I can. It's definitely a fun game for me (no knocks on your review). Something should be said for the rather unreliable "grab/use" function though 🙄
Does this have *base building?* That would be amazing.
Imagine a 7 Days to Die kinda game, but with robots and better graphics. *Building a settlement (either Fallout 4 or 7 days style),* surviving huge but rare robot encounters, rewarding loot for harder hunts... survivability with food and hunting.
That would be my kind of coop survival game.
it does not have base building, sadly. but i agree with you! a voxel based game like 7days to die with robots and without all the glitches and bugs would be amazing.
Bases would seem really dangerous to use. Bring nomadic is not always easy, but at least you can keep running. Having a base would mean holding up against lots of the robots, and hopefully the ao would be smart enough to send more big ones at you if you make a base.
I personally love this game and I played a little bit of it and it kept me on edge because of the robots and trying to use my stealth mode but it’s not a bad game by all means but I don’t think it’s boring by any means. I just think the game needed to use more of the co-op mode or used more multiplayer to be more fun but I played this on single player mode and it kept me on the edge and wish I had a friend to play with me.
my only real problem of this game is the bugs. I ave completed 5 mission "thta are not complete"

The problem with this game is bugs and a lack of support and updated since its release. Beautiful game and i love the idea. Sound and sound track is optimal. But lack of story and environmental variety. Please developers do something about this
I believe critics play a very important role on telling what the game is lacking, so that developer can take notes to improve their games. As customers we would like to get what we want to expect from and experience the games and eventually become satisfied after buying the game.

I was looking forward to this game but every review I watch seems to paint a "Fallout 76 just not as broken" picture.
Put about 4 hours in yesterday with 2 friends. Is not very challenging but is fun as hell so far. Enemy variety would be nice, maybe some building.. perhaps take a note from fallout and build some survivor settlements in the future to give more to do but overall we've had a good time so far. It plays like an open world left for dead and I can get behind that.

I bought this game only for the excellent views I may find while getting baked higher than Everest. Jk, it's really a good game!
If they added things like crafting where you have to sometimes craft things like med kits, throwables maybe even ammo types since civilians were suppose to be prepared and trained for combat and shit. Also maybe make ammo more scarce but not to the point where you only have one full magazine at a time. Possibly cars with fuel to combat players feeling bored by constantly crouching and moving slowly everywhere. Maybe even add different game modes like survival, vs (like l4d) or perhaps you could have morally questionable things like you come across others and you have to decide whether you want to help them, leave them or kill them for their stuff

Imo it's great especially if you have friends to play it with. I was playing it yesterday with a buddy and we thought we had spent maybe 5 hours on the game but we had really played it for about 9, and as the old saying goes, time flies when you're having fun

Also heared that when in coop, if ur both not on the same progression, it wont save for the guest , only for the host so im abit worried abt that if i ever wanted to join someone for some coop fun !
@@ramsr3657 That is true; it doesn't seem to save your progression when you are in Co-Op with someone, at least when it comes to the map, unlocked safehouses etc. I'm not sure about quests because we kinda skipped over those yesterday. And I don't know how the game would be solo, so far essentially all of my play time is with friends.
This game is dope! Avid gamer who's glad to find this game Dec. 2023 for PS4. Developers really know how to world build and create a sense of immersion. Guns are fun to shoot, stealth is back and fun again, ease of play, fun multiplayer. Would like a sequel with exact same gameplay mechanics but just more skins/varied environments.
Also this isn't a Triple A title, it's very ambitious for what it is.

They should of added survival mechanics as well, food drink sleep. It would at least given some purpose to your daily survival.
To me personally it is a freaking awesome game. I'm runming a x box one x on a 4k hdr uhd television with this game and the world is more realistic then any other video game I've played . the guns sound like guns and even walking on the land sounds so realistic. There are a few bugs but not game breaking like fallout 76. All in all it's a dame great video game i score it 8 out of 10.
I like this game. I was hyped before release and its fun. More challenging solo but coop is fun. Same houses look is annoying but challenge and fun is there. 8.5/10

Although there is no need for a full storry campaign it would bee nice with more small stuff, clues to better loot and untold short stories of the people that was before. A car abandoned by the road shouldn't just bee there because it looks good, it needs a backstory, possibly one that you as a player can "follow", and you dont need written letters or audio recordings everywhere just some small hints that might leed to something nice and connects the world together...... Maybe a small advertising for a gunstore in a newspaper, it will probably be looted but maybe you can find a address for the owner, and find something cool at his/hers house. 🙃

Also when starting a new game with a second character, you're dropped straight into the game world where your first character left off, first story & side missions all gone :| and not even weapons/gear you get from the first house, because your first character took them all lol

I just bought this for my PS4 and i cant wait for it to get to my hands, this game is fantastic from videos i saw i have no ideas why people hate this game.
They shoulda made this like the forest. Survival open world with at least somewhat of a story to go off of

As the video states it's a good looking game with repetitive gameplay. Still I enjoyed my time wandering over the huge atmospheric map although the combat can be unfair after the latest update.

I've spent about 7 hours in game. So far it seems to be a bit repetitive. You walk to a location clear the enemy, loot everything, and move on. It's a good game to kill time but it really lacks things that other post apocalyptic titles offer. I picked it up for about $6 on Steam so I can't complain about the price but it really needs a boost in a variety.
