Summary:
First up I got tongue tied twice in this video, first bit was when I said that the game has 5 or 6 weapons, I mean weapon types and then at 4:16 I mean to say ran out of inventory space not ran out of ammo. I thought posting here would be better than a re-edit.
So the game, well it's great fun until the inevitable bug happens, it's immersive until another bug happens, the combat is great until you crash but the looting is just garbage. Copy and paste houses all with the same loot boxes, all containing the usual stuff, ammo, flares and first aid. After a couple of hours you find looting utterly boring, especially as you run out of room so fast due to the ridiculous ammo types and lack of inv room.
This is a huge shame as the game occasionally oozes atmosphere and fun but when it's constantly ruined by bugs and mundane ridiculous game decisions such as tee shirts offering bullet resistance, if they are white, or a pink leather jacket offering blast damage but a brown one does not, well it just makes the game look silly.
I hope the devs continue to fix and update the game as it has huge potential and can be great fun if you don't mind all the bad points I mentioned. FYI my play time was around 13 hours not including closed beta time.
Entertaining as always! Keep up with the awesome work but relax when ya need it brother. My friends and I love your content here in Canada and the US. For anyone that didn't experience the 80's, ya missed out. *Ding!*
can you come back to the title in a couple of months and see if any of these bugs have been fixed?
Thanks again for your honest opinion!
I grew up (bubble-free) in the 80's too and I agree, it was the best time to grow up. Period.
Wish we could have a pint and a red-wine and go into nostalgia-mode.
You keep talking about mechs but there are no mechs in this game. But I tell you in which game there are a lot of mechs: Mechwarrior: Online. Come play Mack, we miss you.
Also did you mean 'Safe Space' rather than 'personal space'? I was around in the best decade too and if someone got in your personal space even in the 80s it could cause problems just the same as now, unless you were a Japanese tourist, as they seem to have an entirely different concept of personal space.
The developers wanted to make the game realistic, so they gave each house the same furniture. It is common knowledge that everyone in Sweden buys their furniture in Ikea.
My thought exactly. All houses are hand modeled, one can notice furnitures can be shifted by as much as 5cm between houses.
@@alexeveryman5080 😂
You're not wrong
Fun Fact : 7 days to die is still in alpha
The developers don't know how that engine works...there is still frame drops in 7days. I cracked it and i was disappointed....good concept of a game...but eventually becomes unplayable due to bad optimization
@DoGgsbollox Why have you given up on 7d2d? It's probably the best zombie survival game. If you don't like the latest version, you can go back to version 16.4, and stick to that. It has crafting, scavenging, building, good zeds, and very long game play before you reach endgame stuff. Especially if you don't use cheats, and disable airdrops and play the proper difficulty mode.
Is it really? It’s full release on console..?
@@DWAC no its in alpha state on consoles also
I was done with that game when they made it so that you get planks by hitting a tree fit your fist,
instead of like the old days when you chopped a tee down and got logs that you then refined to planks..
And other similar simplifications that completely ruined the immersion..
7days to die was fucking great fun a year or two into developement.. and then they fucked it up..
This game disappointed me so hard...i finally know how my dad feels about me
Oh dear.
Finally you feel my pain, you little shit.
@@souldry lmao
It's been one year and I've heard that the developers never gave up, slowly increased assets, added a crafting system, lowered the price... I'd love to see a short revisit review Mac.
The developers have a blog for the game where they've stated that they plan to do much bigger updates within the future so let's hope they hold to their word on that.
Aye Mac, give us a revisit please. Preferably from a solo perspective as I have no friends 😜
Might be worthy if it was Early Access but game devs should really just say they're Early Access. Not release buggy games as finished products.
Have they fixed the bug? I was interested in this but my mate got it on release and there is/was a game breaking bug near the end which completely ruined his game and I forgot about it. Same with Alien Isolation
Ahh yes the 80s. When working a job actually paid the bills.
True that !!!!
Hey, welcome back to "personal space."
I'm your host Phillip Jacobs, and let me tell you, I care about my personal space.
ME TO
Ants in-my-eyes Johnson is better.
Theres one personal space!
Let's get all personal space up in here. 😄
Let me tell *you* Phillip, your personal space is getting too close to my personal space so I'm gonna need you to dial back your intensity there buddy.
I've been watching your videos way too much, I found myself in Asda the other day looking at snacks and said to myself "Asda own brand crisps...are they worth a buy?" In your voice of course! 🤣
Anyhoo, I'm glad that you reviewed this game as I was wondering whether or not to get this. I think I'll leave it until the bugs are fixed or it's on sale for a few quid.
Lol. Buying new socks, are they worth a buy? Lets read the words the words, of the manufacturer.
That’s adorable
Did you read.....’the words, the words.... of the crisp manufacturer?’ 😂
Next time bring a bell and hit it like a .....;)
Im going to do this from now on
********* 2021 UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM ********
I bought it recently after waiting a while so they could add more content and... well, I might say it's pretty damn fun now, most of the technical problems were ironed out and there is actually more content in the game, like a robot type called a rival that evolve over time, if you don't deal with it for a while, they actually level up and learn from the fight they have with you if they end up being victorious, they added a bike into the game, they added unique experimental weapons which are a tier above yellow, they added challenges which award you with bragging points and even some exclusive cosmetics rewards.
Overall, the game evolved quite a bit since it was released, the first updates seemed to be mostly about fixing the game but now, since the start of September, they seem to be focused on adding more content now that the game is mostly fixed
**May 2021 UPDATE**: Welp, it's been another year now, almost 2 in fact (Christ almighty time flies so fast it's insane...) and the game just kept becoming better.
2 Major content DLC's were released, Alpine Unrest and FNIX Rising, both of them added an actual story and NPC's to the game with FNIX Rising setting up the main long-term antagonist for the game moving forward
1 minor weapon DLC was released, U.S weapon pack which added 3 new guns, the M9 Berretta, the M60 (The Pig) LMG and the M16
several free content updates were released and added stuff like Crafting, the apocalypse variant of machines and tons of evolution to the main map.
And now, a new Massive free update is about to be released tomorrow called "Resistance", which adds actual base building, an evolved map transitioning the game's time period from 1989 to 1990 and another paid weapon pack called "Soviet Weapon pack" which includes an RPG-7, an SVD and an AS-VAL
Thank you !.. For giving us an update
Have they fixed the bug? I was interested in this but my mate got it on release and there is/was a game breaking bug near the end which completely ruined his game and I forgot about it. Same with Alien Isolation

There has been a decline in fun since the 80's
since vine got deleted

there was alot of nasty things going on during those times. also kids did horrible things to each other too. like getting bloody beatings and stuff the 80's had there serious negatives as well. but people were always hush hush about it. unlike now where everything is out in the open and its making all the softies go nuts cause they cant believe this is the real world.
Fucking lefty millennials.
I’m watching this video while I’m naked and I’m humming macks ending theme tune with a crazy look in my eye
This game looks sooooo empty and bland. Shame really
Hologramix 1
it really is the movement and difficulty is great. just way too many items to use for revive makes it not feel hard since u can just get back up like 15 times. also i heard the ai is good too. such a shame all i see the devs do is show off lives streams in the update section of steam. guess im not buying it if they think that is a priority
Because it is.
it looks like it needs another year of development. like add more variations the houses and maybe more items.
Until you play it, and learn its fucking awesome
"We didn't need personal space" - Mac 2019
They did the same scam back then with "TheHunter Primal", which was an Asset Flip from "TheHunter Classic".
While "Generation Zero" is an Asset Flip of "TheHunter Call of the Wild".
And again people fell for it.
I was wondering why everything looked like it came from COTW.
@stevie bops but is it not Avalanche that made it? Just cause, madmax and rage 2? Maybe aint them that made this then I'll have to Google it.
@@-aleeke-2526 Its a confusing mess, Avalanche and Emote games launched Hunter Classic, then Avalanche bought the sole rights to the Hunter IP and made a new studio, Expansive Studio to make Hunter Primal and later Call of the Wild published by Avalanche, that is why they look so similar.
I thought this title looked familiar and it is, basically asset flip mechs for deers instead.
Fucking love call of the wild but this looks pretty dumb.
The way the smaller mechs move remind me of that one black mirror episode
I hope you cover Outward...I thought you'd be all over it lol.

Glad I got Outward rather than this.

Can you review Outward?
"Back in the yeti's"
"In the yeti's guys in the yeti's"
I think the game loses most of the atmosphere when you're playing with other people. Playing alone, inventory mechanics and recycled assets aside, I was really enjoying the quiet tension. Honestly I didn't play that far so I had the benefit of not knowing how the diffculty and robot units would escalate, it gave a really nice sensation of thinking you're being watched and hunted, not knowing what's over the next hill or corner.
Fully agree. And it relies much heavier on stealth and tactics than straightforward shooting like many other FPS.
You're a legend. I was just debating whether I should buy this game or not.
@dustisdeadbodies85 Probably console.
You should definitely take a look at this again. I just played through it on Xbox and it's so much better than it was 2 years ago

Being 8 in the 80s/90s "Ok mum I'm going out someone's mum will feed me see you next year."
In my country kids took themselves to school and came home on their own. Our parents used to tie the house key on a string and put it around our necks and tell us to go play outside. We met up in small or large mobs of kids and beat a raggedy old plastic ball up and down the street all day. There were very few cars back then so we could play football minigames using the street as a court. Then in the mid 90s i discovered video games and that was the last time i beat a ball on the street. Video games ruined my social life and i am still an addict to this day. Ah, went a little dark there...
Anyway 80s were fun! Great music, great films and people just hung out on the streets more playing boomboxes, going to cinemas or just plain walking on a nice boulevard.
Please do an outward review! You are the only reviewer I trust.
i just hope people don't pull a ign ..... thinking the full back pack on is ok i mean u not pointing a gun and simply pulling a trigger .. you need to drop that heavy ass backpack so you can save stamina swinging a heavy sword or block with a heavy shield. why use 300 stamina when u could have just used 3?? then complain about it ign pisses me off.they need real gamers.. that know how to read a hint
Is this what happens when you follow the Bethesda model for game making? It just works, right?
Thumbs up for the 80’s 👍
"Welcome to 2019 Sweden. The native population has disappeared, and hostile machines roam the streets."
Hostile things are roaming the streets yea but they are not machines.
Just wanted to say thanks. I don't have a ton of money at the moment and you greatly help to inform my decisions on purchases. I was happily surprised to see that you have the same setup I have down to the mousepad. Neato!
Can you link the new PC you got?
Where are all these guns coming from in 1980's sweden?
This games completely broken, you can simply fast travel to where you already are and all the loot containers refill with the same loot. So you can walk out of the first town with 2000 rounds and 999 health kits in about 60 seconds
i join a multiplayer mission, and when the host ended the session, i go back to my campaign, and all of my unsolved missions just gone, i've revisit the missions location, still nothing,
there was 1 time, i lost all of my loot, even my character is invisible, not only after i create a new character, and my old character is back with all of the loot.
i wish the game have less bug, i am 24h in it, i only explored like 1/4 of the map, maybe even less
I had fun in the 80s and I have fun now. Sounds like the non-funners have gotten into your personal space Mac. {ding} :D
I posted about this game on the PS4 forums, I simply said I dislike it when games put a damn yellow glow around things you can use, do they assume we are morons and can't figure out what we can pick up? The hate I got back was staggering. Needless to say, I will not be returning to that forum.
the 80's Girls wore Jeans that were so Tight they looked like they were painted on ,
Mac are you going to review outward?
Give it a year of post launch support and fixes, then grab it during a sale.
or just get it through Instant Gaming after 2 months the price will drop significantly
Mac have you given any thought to review OUTWARD? I think the game would be right up your alley and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

@@Mark-rv6ht Very funny calling people who can't have guns cucks. Why is it you americans haven't started the war, you have weapons en masse. I wonder.

It was like that in the 90's, my decade. All went downhill in 2001 when suddenly people started getting funny about beliefs. Then everyone wanted a slice of that oppression pie.
This game deserves a re-review, as of 2/5/24 they just posted another hotfix and continue to post resistance reports of whats going on with development (last was 1/26/24). You can get it dirt cheap and the DLCs...worth it.
Great review as always my man!
Has this game been updated?
Does anyone knows how to safely download old games? For example i want to download:"Captain Claw",but the sites from witch you can get it do not seem too safe, even tho they are "secure".
Any review about Sekiro? Although I've bought it already but wanted to know your opinion about it. I'm having a hard and fun time with it
Have you played it recently? I saw a video today, they have some base defence mode and stuff, seems to be quite updated.
is this a reskin of far cry 5? has the same ui and graphics style
Any chance you'd review Outward?
Here in BC there were only about 5 different types of houses built in the 80's! We used to joke about it, and we called them "BC box houses"!
The "suspicion indicator" looks like it's from Far Cry! It does look like it has potential, but as you said, not ready for release. Too bad really, cause it seems like it would be a lot of fun once the bugs are worked out.
Great review as always Mack!
Have a great day!

Now its BC Box in the sky, aka apartments (;
hello from 2024 - I have put in 7 hours so far and most of your complaints are still valid. Buildings are still copy n paste all over the place. AI isn't good as you said, mechs don't flank or find a better way to kill me. SOund is spot on as you say, shotgun combat is great. Mission structure is still all over the map/section. haven't said all that, I can't stop playing until I finish the story, I actually want to find out what happened. :) No crashes, no obvious bugs that I've seen besides invisible NPCs
Been wanting to buy this, but had to wait for your video on it
should i buy this on sale?
Has the game improved from its release because its on sale and i want to buy it
"Too many ammo types"
You say that like a bad thing, dawg!
Can someone explain me how a 12ga pump action can be semi automatic? I'm a bit triggered over here.
Pun intended?
The only thing I’m experiencing which I imagine will be patched this week is the detection through walls with some of these mechs. Also the mech that I kill getting stuck in the door I could do without. Other than all that I love this game. I don’t need much more than what they’ve provided here but I’d love to see them expand it.
Mack is this going to be revisited?
Hate it when they don’t have lean in FPS games.
5:10 This save space you were talking about. :)
Nice review Mack, thank you. Ahh such a pity about the bugs, hmmm hopefully the developers will improve upon what is a good game. Needs more development time. Love your comments about the 80’s. Yes great decade, no narcissistic social media, no diversity, no inclusion, no political correctness, bands actually played instruments, remember what an instrument was ? !. People could actually boil an egg and use a screwdriver ! not many of those skills left today ! lol ! However step forward to the future of 2019, and I cannot see any hover boards down the street ! tell Marty !
Mac is right the 80's were the best years and also had the best music!
Worst music* lul
Slayer were amazing back then. The pop music was terrible.
@@13_faces Yeah, wayyyyyyy worst!
Oh man! I've been waiting like a basket case for this video
*Edit:* I started sweating when I seen the ammunition mess. Then when I seen how respawning works, my decision was made 🥺
I was going to pull the trigger and buy this game but I needed to be convinced by watching ytubers play and I have watched a good many hours.
It was difficult to pinpoint why I did not but I think you have made a pretty good estimation, the problem was not just one big thing but a collection of smaller ones.
What attracted me initially was that it was a survival game without zombies, oh am I so over zombies, so that was one boxed ticked but for whatever reason it is very much a rinse and repeat, I know most survival/adventure games are but at least try to make the missions differ a little more.
The copy and paste buildings do make it feel more beta, although they do start to vary a little the farther north you go and when they are non interactive they become just scenery, the map generally looks good and the story line is original but I just do not think it is engaging enough and I so wanted it to be I just wish I had the answer to make it better, I do want to encourage the devs to keep at it though because they clearly have the skills.
I remember playing this at PAX 2018 and noticed parts of the mechs could be blasted off but nothing was happening. I asked the booth-dev about it and they said the Mechs weren't at the point where they were programmed to react to damage appropriately (eg the propane tank would fall off and no explosion) which sounded like you could attack limbs/eyes/weapons and disable them. Disappointing they didn't bring the Binary Domain level of damage modeling-shoot off an arm and they'll drop their gun and use their other arm to pick it up, remove a foot and they peg-leg around, leg and they crawl...
Kind of like the original stalker game when it came out? Really atmospheric, great fun, lots of bugs.
just with the personal space section you earned my like
I was hoping Mech-ABBA would be the ultra boss. All four of them badly welded together.
Yeah, and when you take down the final boss its speakers play; "Waterloo - i was defeated you won the war"
Mack my friends have finally bought this game and im wondering if you've looked at this game since you've reviewed it as im unsure whether to buy this game or not
Curious how you feel about the updates, devs have put a lot of love into GZ.
Great review Mack, as per usual.
Hopefully mack checks out Tabs or Outward eventually. Great review as always though!
Generation Zero Game Review and insightful social commentary lol
oh there is a few underground bunkers and an air field landing strip too.
I picked this up for £13.99 on the PS store and it's a fun game to play with friends. Loads of the bugs have been fixed but still have the issue with too many ammo types for one gun.
I wish ammo, medkits, all resources were a lot harder to find. That would raise the tension level. As is I never worry that I will ever run out of anything, and because of that, the inventory fills up so FN fast.
Hey Mac, just wanted to say thanks for your unbiased opinion. I know you really really wanted to thumb this up but couldn’t, because of the huge issues. Thank You!
Love the 80's rant...so true HAHA! You are the Best! My go-to for info on games!
Thank you for saving me 30$
Looks similar to the half life concept, Trouble is back in the day Half life for example it didn't have broken issues, it played correct it was story driven full of immersion, but today it's to quick to push out to the market give us the money attitude, and long bug fixing times, where it shouldn't be, This is why so many games fail today because of this. Good review mack Nice job.
Overall the mechs and thier mechanics were great but that's where the greatness ends, after they had focused so many of thier resources on mechs you can see that not much else was worked on in the same caliber.
Damn, you hit the nail on the head regarding people today and groups always needing to find something wrong with everything. People now are just raised in bubbles and coddled endlessly, mix that with social media and the fact that putting your opinion out there is only all too easy, everyone has to find a problem. Hell, this comment in and of itself is ironic because here I am on a UA-cam video displaying my disdain for the world we currently live in..!
Any chance of a 2021 review of this? Is the game any better these days? 🤔
As a player of TheHunter: Call of the Wild, I am REALLY excited for this game to reach its full potential. I'm taking this game as a work in progress - not a bad thing... very few games actually get released finished these days. The game really comes into its own as a group. The mechs movement is so fluid - it almost gives them an eery feel. Couple that with awesome sound and environmental effects and this is a game you can get immersed into. It's a slow burner though so stick with it guys... I'm hoping this is one to watch in the future...
After four years they still keep updating the game and the price is lower too. 25 dollars, but it goes on sale every ten seconds for just 7.50
Mack, please re-visit this game. It has become an excellent game full of immersion, beautiful weather effects, visuals, tactical combat and stunning robots. I think it is an absolute masterpiece except for a few UI issues and the challenge which is a bit too much at times (but will be addressed in the coming patch). Cannot believe that there are so many negative reviews out there. If this game would've been made by Ubisoft and it would've been hyped up, everyone would give this a 9/10.
Mack, Mack, Mack, Mack, MACK! Why haven't you reviewed The Talos Principle? I'd love to see you try that.
Mac I Feel the same I want to love this game so much. I enjoy so many aspects of it. I unfortunately have Game breaking bugs. I get booted to desktops so many dam times as ridiculous I'm given a little break right now and I'm going to revisit in a couple months hoping that they fix some issues. And I hope that you fix some issues yourself and are feeling better I love your content! I just went through some stuff myself recently trying to get back on track!
Ammo argument....... don't get it. Choose 1 type of each and don't collect the rest?!
We miss you Mac
I'm sure the Bug free DLC will be availble shortly, combined with the extended inventory DLC and the COTW ATV DLC. Yes in answer to your question, i have experienced these devs before ;-)
Outward wab?
AHH the good old 80's, out the door at 8am and not coming back till the street lights came on.
School discos with way to much brut on.
And way too touchy cuddles of uncle Pete.
Good times.
The 80's and 90's where the last big party after that needed a permit and you don't get one .. People don't like other people to have a party because they don't have one..
One thing video games never get right is the rocket launchers. Firing a Gustav is literally like shooting a cannon off your shoulder, but they always sound like pop guns in video games.
The 80's were the Best, Mac.
Mack when are we going to get a Crusader Kings 2 throwback review? That games right up your personal space
I am going to be a wheelchair bound old man shitting his diapers and still playing Crusader Kings 2. Paradox make some amazing games.
What really bothers me about all the ammo types in the game is that half of them would realistically be completely useless against metal machines. The only reason they have all those ammo types is for "realism," but shooting birdshot at a human person about 30 feet away would leave them annoyed but not much else. What the hell is it supposed to do against robots?
There's also the .32acp, with is basically the type of bitch pistol hookers keep in their purse. And then they have hollowpoints in .32, which is _designed_ to not penetrate. So the round itself is too weak to anything, and then they add in another round designed to do effectively less.
Brilliant.
The birdshot is pretty much worthless until late game when can acquire an experimental shot gun. With it birdshot pellets turn into mini-explosives, causing huge damge in a wide cone.
They've done some patching lately. The game is much better now and is on sale on Steam. Imo this is a great game. Very atmospheric, awesome music, great stealth and tactical shooting, the mechs are amazing. It feels like Stranger Things FPS. You should revisit Mack! You are still spot on regarding the 80's, but I don't agree that this game is bugged anymore. In fact, it has turned out to be the fantastic game that you said it could become!
