I've been playing Valve before Steam came out. CS 1.6, TF Classic and HL2 all the way is the peak. Also Orange Box is the second peak. I love these videos, they are so unique!
Nah he also worked on 3.0 he also didn't "leave" he was fired. He 0-dayed 3.0 by accidentally leaking it, which resulted in his termination from the company.
Valve decided a long time ago they wouldn't make a new game until they could truly change the landscape of gaming. Got to a point where the hardware wasn't allowing that. So time to make hardware.
So pretentious and obnoxious, we all collectively mocked James Cameron for going on two decades after he insisted technology needed to “catch up with him” to make his stupid Dances with Wolves but in space movie. Nothing about the Half-Life series or the story therein needs some stupid gimmick or “revolutionary new tech” to be good or to justify a new installment. A new installment is justified by leaving people on a fucking cliffhanger 20 years ago! Fuck the stupid gimmicks and the perceived need for them, I see all that as full on excuses or a true signifier for how stupid and deluded the high ups at Valve are. People kissing Gabe’s fat ass and worshiping him and telling him how good his shit smells for twenty years has not helped anything or anybody.
@@eniteoa they decided this when they made half life 2. its not a 'justification', valve really thinks they have something revolutionary to offer every time they release a game. artifact included; sometimes you just miss, right? i doubt valve is about money and ever will be. per person theyre more profitable than any company by landslides. landslides plural.
@@zippityzbrakejust adding on with Alex they added VR into the source 2 physics engine. You can shake a bottle full of water in that game. And that same engine now runs dota and counterstrike. Not to mention their new moba game that’s in testing. Valve works on valve time, they do what they want when they want. They scrapped left for dead 3 supposedly months before it could have been fully released. Years into development. Their employees have massive creative freedom and freedom to work on what they want. It’s why they have been so consistent over the years. And don’t get me started on all the dev friendly things steam alone has that is revolutionary for the gaming industry.
so basically, half life 3 will never come until valve comes up with some kind innovation that it can use half life to demonstrate edit: and no, half life alyx doesnt count. hla is like some weird limbo of half life 1.5 and 2.5
@@timecubed yeah it's rly difficult to predict what meaningful innovation would get valve to make hl3. hl1 proved that you can make a linear fps with a plot hl2 demonstrated proper gravity physics hl:a was valve's hat in the VR ring so now what? we wait for the source 3 engine? but even if somehow, I was right and hl3 will come once we develop the source 3 engine, what innovation would source 3 do?
It's not just the technoiogy that made Half Life top the charts, it was it's over-the-top storytelling and intricate world concept, that even at 50%, it'll make a lot of AAA titles today look like an episode from Sesame Street.
1. Valve co-developed Left 4 Dead with Turtle Rock Studios, they committed roughly 100 staff members to its development and were involved throughout its life cycle. To say it was made by Turtle Rock is inaccurate. 2. Portal is a Valve original product, it just uses a mechanic from Narbacular Drop. That doesn't stop it from very much being a Valve game through and through.
@@chpsilva after they were hired. The only thing that remains in Portal from the original game that got them interested was the portal concept. With the other games (e.g., TF, CS) they kept a lot more than a single feature.
yeah, crowbcat's video on Back 4 Blood and Left 4 Dead is probably a perfect video to show how important valve's involvement was with the Left 4 Dead Games.
I think the scarcity is part of what makes Valve's games so good. They're not being forced to develop a game they don't want to produce. The fact that they can produce it on their own time, especially when they get to flex their latest innovations in games technology, seems to be what gives Valve games their polish and loved jank. On top of that, you'd get bored of it if a Half-Life game was released every year.
I'm pretty sure they talked about this too. SOmeone (or gabe himself) said that they WANTED to make a new Half-life game, and even tried to, but they lost interest because it felt forced onto them due to the demand and such. (and also probably the fact there wasn't much new to it in terms of tech)
on the contrary when Valve games were good they came out frequently. now they rarely come and when they come they're mediocre and driven by some agenda (Alyx exists to push VR, CS2 exists to keep the lootbox skin ecosystem alive in competition with Valorant).
This mental gymnastics is so funny to me. “It a good thing to not get games. I like them because they don’t make games” absolute brainwashed losers worshiping Gabe.
Very true. Their decision to stay private bodes very well for consumers. They could've easily made an IPO and rack in a ton more money but it seems like they care about autonomy and quality more which is really rare to see.
@@mifiamigahna i mean, gabe is no longer living in US & stay at NZ, His age is no longer in prime condition for gaming industries. That mean he no longer handled Valve
He's getting old and also the dude is not prime example of a healthy physique. The day he retires, is the day PC gaming dies. Valve will be sold to the highest bidder and it will all be over
Valve can save mobile from Chinese like Tencent, hoyoverse etc evil capitalize which we think evil like ea , Activision etc but are just copying Tencent evil modle. Like valve made BP on Dota but Tencent copy it made efficient evil capital version of Dota BP on epic & mobile game now every west studio has it. they experiment on mobile game like skins or BP to link with meta changes, slow brings evil solution to pc. They even tried to experiment win fps cap to add hidden pay2win. Like valve made skin on csgo but Chinese too it to next lvl added hidden pay2win like hidden aim assist . Chinese are spending crazy money in gaming because they can make crazy robot like devs army just like they own most of manufacturing chain buy abusing capitalize efficiently. Tencent name have become so evil they change name to lots of different name & new publisher
I came back to wanting to play a quick fps game and tried to load up CSGO to find out it was CS2 now, but it's broken on my PC for whatever reason it crashes. So I just decided to load up CS1.6 again and have been having a blast a couple nights a week playing like I used to as a teen. And my kids are playing Portal 1 right now. The games are dated, but timeless in mechanics.
Nailed it at the end. Valve became a massive business after being a platform. Steam no longer has an unfair advantage with platforms like Blizzard, Epic Games and more creating their own alternatives. That's why I think them going into hardware is a way for them to become a dominating platform again (Steam Deck, VR, etc)
A good way to summarize what Steam did for Valve. Literally gave them a life time of money to spend all the time they need on projects. No rush to release games on a time or have publishers breathe down their neck.
they just decided to not turn passion projects into cash cows, but to make a cash cow to fund passion projects. hl alyx is very much a passion project imo
@emperorfaiz how? That's literally what they are. Hl alyx is literally just a vr demo thing. Not even a full game experience that everyone who doesn't have a vr can experience. They haven't truly made a New game in a long time.
The fact that half life 3 will come out only if there is a big pivotal point in gaming as now they only release stuff from the half life universe once they are aware that a new set of hardware is easily able to be able to consumers makes me think they already have an idea on what a potential half life 3, portal 3 or even tf3 could look like. The only thing stopping them is we haven't reached a nother pivotal point in gaming history for them to want to release one.
I looked at your channel icon and thought Valve was uploading a video on why they don’t make games anymore, which just seems like something they would just do, which makes it even better 🤣
I think the main things that makes valve so good is that they just know their customers better than anyone else, they are willing to do things just for the sake of making things better for the consumer and they try to add or improve things that you didn't even know you needed. For example, a relatively recent update added some new features in the steam overlay such as being able to take notes while playing or pinning windows to show in game, this is something I think most people wouldn't think they would need until it's there and they realise how convenient it is, but this directly doesn't make them any money. They do what they can to improve their service as much as possible because they know by providing the best service with the best features for their consumers they will end up making more money.
@tainttracker7556 A funny extra feature here is that Steam is also one of the only platforms of the one you mentioned where you could still launch a game through Steam if it is bought on the other platforms.
Playing HL2 right now. Gordan's escape from the city in the boat is a brilliant sequence. Valve paces their games without overdoing or undercutting anything. I smile every time I see the factory smoke stack crash into the water.
Valve is focusing on making Windows Compatibility Tools for Unix and Unix-like systems since 2012. They're the ones who made gaming on Unix systems as good (sometimes even better, for example; Dying Light on Laptops) than gaming on Windows because theyve made Proton and contribute money and code to the Wine project. Windows Compatiblilty Tools help devs and unix gamers, so, I assume when they perfect that in a couple of years (hoping that microsoft doesnt make a big change in their NT Kernel), well most likely be seeing Half Life 3.
Well, it's doing it not without self-interest. It wants to free up gaming and Steam from the Microsoft platform monopoly. Hence basically making a separate OS for gaming.

we won't see HL3 from that. That is not the type of technology they show off in their games. It's not really visible and doesn't really change gameplay other than the fact that it can be played on Linux. HL1 showed off their GoldSrc engine, with scripted sequences, more advanced animations, and unprecedented levels of interactivity. HL2 showed off their Source engine, with incredible (at the time) graphics and a real time physics engine. HLA showed off their Source 2 engine and how well they've made it work with VR, with incredible graphics (given that it runs well in VR) and a new physics engine built by them. HL3's new technology being "it runs on Linux despite being developed for Windows" doesn't sound very impressive, even if it is. We'll see HL3 once they really have something new to show. And once they are confident enough to continue the story...
The owner of Valve is living his dream. He and his team created revolutionary game titles several times, created a platform for gamers to buy and communicate with one another, and then released their very own console. This is the literal definition of growth. He’s slowly becoming the guy who created Gregarious Games in Ready Player One. Half-life 3 was a sacrifice for innovation to be made and if we never get another Valve title so that the industry can be steered in the correct direction by actual gamers, then I'm with it.
Having a revenue outside of making games (Steam) helps them to stay profitable without having to resort to making games every year, a privilege which other game publishers doesn't have
i respectfully disagree that companies need to make games every year to stay profitable, maybe indie ddevs, ubisoft, EA, etc only do for greed, look at rockstar 10 years to make a new major release of gta, they learned to make money from gta online, but people don't hate they like they hate EA, is possible to profit without shit games every years, or excess of predatory praticles

And it's the exact reason Epic Games is their only true competitor. They have a similar thing going with Fortnite. And they will burn as much Fortnire-cash to get the Epic Games Store up and running as they need to, because they see the value of their own store. They want two money printing machines. Other Game devs and publishing houses have tried the same or similar, but they just don't have as much expendable cash to burn as Epic has right now. And thus inevitably failed.

It was even more revolutionary at the time. There are things which we take for granted now that were introduced in two revolutionary FPSs, released only a few months apart: Half Life and Unreal. Both used environmental storytelling in a way no other FPS to date had. No more roaming a poorly-thought-out world shooting generic enemies - these games put story as an equal element to combat, and told it through level design. Both used a new level of AI sophistication. Earlier games just had enemies wander around and shoot at the player, dumb as rocks. Unreal enemies would actually dodge incoming projectiles, something entirely new. HL took it to an even greater extent - while most of the aliens are dumb beasts, as you'd expect, the human enemies could effectively use cover. A lot of it was actually hints in the map telling them where to hide. It modeled sight and hearing senses, and the marines even had squad behavior - if one member sees the player they can call to their allies to come and assist. The graphics were also the best around in 1998. Though they look pretty crap now, naturally. There have been updates that modernise the graphics.
@@vylbird8014the AI in HL1 still holds up. And yeah I’ll never forget the opening of that game, the sense of being inside something greater than yourself (reinforced by your character being unremarkable at that point) was really new and immersive. Unfortunately scripted scenes wore out their welcome over the years, which makes it hard for modern nerds to appreciate the storytelling. Sort of like The Matrix-you can’t see it for the first time unless you saw it when it was new, because you’ve already seen so much of it in other movies. If that makes sense.
I'd like to believe that Gabe's strategy is to create awesome and affordable hardware like the deck to make tons of money and then advance technology further. After that, Valve would have capable hardware to run the next gen engine on which HL3, and possibly other games, would be built on. A guy could only dream... I just finished the video and... yeah
The way i see it, the Entropy: Zero 2 team has a good chance of getting hired by valve. If you dont know what that is, its a half life 2 mod which tries to evolve the story and push the narative of the game. Its the closes thing to a 3rd part of the game and i truly believe that they have a chance of being hired or atleast noticed because they really made a fantastic mod which feels like a separate game.
While i definitely would not be opposed to it, I doubt it will happen. It definitely does connect opposing force and portal to half life naturally (when it never did feel natural) but i also think it messes with the cannon to much for Valve to actually cannonize. Unless they want to go a way different direction in Half Life 2 episode 3 or half life 3
@@gevurahel I knew about entropy 2 even before his video and I even did a presentation on it in my class, although it wasn't nearly as long or detailed as pyros. But yeah I knew about the mod before he even played it
Valve doesn't need a bunch of modders to evolve the story of the franchise they started. If Valve wanted to they would released the 3rd game already. They obviously already have the money, talent and manpower to do it but it's not in their interest to make it at the moment.
´´They won´t make it just to make it´´ is a very nice way to put it, its somehow comforting that there is still game company out there that doesn´t massively produce games just because they can. This makes every valve game a classic which you can´t say about most of games.
I think the part where Valve let the community do it for them is a little misleading, they really work and create the titles, sometimes changing almost everything in the project (this is the case of Portal, the only thing from the original project is you go through a portal and exit another). One good example is that Turtle rock studio claims they are the creators of Left 4 Dead, but if you count how much employees Valve had in Left 4 Dead, you could easily say its a Valve game, loved by players and commercial success. When you compare to what games Turtle Rock did alone after they split with Valve, only commercial failures (Evolve and Back 4 Blood). I think the best way to put it that Valve sees the potential in other developers work, hire them and work together to bring something amazing.
This is the comment I was hoping to see. Valve developed L4D in cooperation with Turtle Rock, they committed somewhere around 100 employees to the project and were involved throughout its life cycle. They didn't just show up at the end to slap their logo on it, it's very much a Valve game. Like you said, this is obvious enough when you just look at Turtle Rock's subsequent attempts to make a game without Valve's co-development.
Though I miss the hype that surrounded regular Valve releases, I do appreciate Valve for going from revolutionizing game genres to trying to revolutionize game technology with their money.
If Half Life 3 comes out, it'll be an even bigger anticipation of a game then Cyberpunk or GTA VI combines. Probably. Who knows what would happen to the internet if Valve out of nowhere dropped even a small teaser for Half Life 3.
Cyberpunk maybe but i dunno about GTA6 even if the game (Half-Life 3) will be a revolution in term of graphics, gameplay, story. Open world is a trend and Valve is already abandoned their game for so long man.
People still care about gta? Maybe back in 2014-2019 I’d of believed that but nowadays i don’t think any of the minuscule hype I’ve seen for it so far will last

Im pretty sure Valve has tons of tech demo's and proof of concepts inside their doors, they just wont work it out or release anything they deem unfit for Valve's reputation. They care about games still, but they are really careful with their brand.
You are correct. They have a hyge graveyard of games that never saw light of day. I thought that was public info but some youtuber covered it. They scrap like 10 projects for every game that gets released. In truth, not being accountable and their pursuit of perfection kinda ruined their ability to make games. If they didnt have steam, theyd have gone out of business long ago
@@davidlapointe4710Thats a sad truth. Atleast Valve still lives. As a game company I consider them the best. They better not release a game than to release a bad one and I'm 100% on board with that.
In terms of Half-Life 3, I think we're actually closer than so many people realize. I think the next innovation Valve is gonna start pushing is probably AI in their games (for NPCs or their game director) or a Linux based distro as a standalone OS for their users. I think either of those things will 100% come with a HL3 and most likely in the next 2-3 years. I would not be surprised if Valve is looking into utilizing AI to make more believable NPCs and an OS designed to free up enough resources to give that theoretical AI the best chance at working.
It needs to be said that they don't just "buy successful games": L4D got improved immensely through valve playtesting and staff, as demonstrated by Back4Blood, which had no valve support.
Let's face it, we will never see a Half-Life 3. It was good while it lasted, Valve games will always be my favorite ones. Valve is now doing Steam and hardware. RIP Valve, you will be missed in gaming world.
They can take all time that they need. We came to such state when we are actually not waiting for anything from them but when they release something, I know it'll worth my time and money because well.. it's Valve. Valve never ever released an awful game. Every their game is precious and will find its fans.
In my eyes, as far as Valve games are concerned, in my eyes, Valve can do no wrong. They've pumped out timeless classics I'll be playing quite literally until I'm no longer on this planet or I'm not physically able to game anymore. Their games, most notably the Left 4 Dead and Half Life series have such a special place in my heart. God bless the studio and this team.
To my memory, Gabe has been partaking in neurological research and its connection with gaming. Considering Valve seems to only make games when it's innovative (HL1, HL Alyx on VR) I think HL3 will incorporate VR with controller-less gameplay. Why use your hands when you can use your brain? I figure Gabe wants to make the first true alternate reality experience, straight out of a dystopian future. Amazing.
I remember when I see theme on forum about "When HL3 will release". With vote 3 option - 2007, 2008 and 2009. And I see it at 2009 and think, "nah, maybe 2011 or something" :D
Valve followed a similar path as ILM. Instead of just showcasing special effects in Lucas films, they established themselves as a special effects house and sold them to anyone that could afford the technology in their movie. In doing so it also spawned other studios and helped create thriving special effects industry. VGalve can make infinitely more money as a software distributor than they would ever make as a game studio. It also gives them money to take on any project they would like without worry about deadlines that currently plague the industry with subpar games on release.
There are always multiple answers to this but one of them is probably the Steam revenue. From my view, I see they are trying to maintain the steam platform by supporting the community on their platform and capture newer potential market outside of window. That is why the steam deck exists and so is Steam OS which is build upon Arch Linux, a distribution of Linux. Since window now has multiple competitors like the Epic Games Store for an example. I don’t know, this was just my opinion.
idk man, they made steam machine(using linux) 10 years ago, competition didn't existed, they made proton(what steam deck use to play windows game) 5 years ago, before any competition
@@off1cial_.19 to be honest about that game store ( EGS ), it just felt barebones with features. Steam just felt more than just a game store, it’s an entire community or a social app itself. I’m just saying even if Epic Games Store is not a big competitor yet, at least Steam is still testing new grounds in the market and not being anti consumers about it. That’s something good to see.
Nearly all valve games are instant classics. They have more "classics" than multiple companies combined. And i think they want to keep it that way. Especially with their crowning achievement being the Half-life games, pushing boundaries and setting new standards with each release
"Why Valve doesnt make new games anymore" >Literally working on a new game for quite a while, being played in alpha state by various people as we speak
I mean, they released HL Alyx 3 years ago and have since been working one multipe titles: CS2, Neon prime and HLX (which according to recent rumors might be a sequel to HL Alyx and will be released with the Deckard).
Half-Life 3 was officially canceled in 2015 which is why the story writer came out with epistile 3 in 2017 due to frustration. That is the closest we will ever get to an official continuance of the series other than alyx
Valve doesnt make a new game mostly a half life game until they know that said game will push the limits on gaming. Half life 1 pushed fps games as a whole. Half life 2 showed off game physics possibilities. And most recently half life alyx which showed that vr games have potential to be just as good as flatscreen. I hate to say it as i loved the half life games but half life is kinda a glorified tech demo. Pushing/showing game advancements
I remember when Half Life came out... There was nothing like it. From the opening moments it was clear I was experiencing something special and revolutionary.
"Okay, finished the video about Valve not making games, that's off my list." "Hey, did you hear Valve is making games again?" "What" "Valve is making games again" "What" "Half-Life 3 (HLX) and like three other things" "What"
Valve needs to make another VR game, Half Life Alyx was good but it was the skin of the apple, it not even scratched the surface of what VR is capable of. It was a great game and the best VR has to offer as of now but there are so many things it could expand on that would yet again change how players view VR.
If Valve releases Half-Life 3 only for the steam deck they’ll break my heart. I had to wait multiple years since HL2 was released as my PC at the time couldn’t run it. When I eventually got to experience it, it was otherworldly. I still remember how terrifying was that first ever visit to Ravenholm, or the battle against the gunship in Water Hazard. Valve could release HL3 in Source 1 engine and most of us would he happy.
i like how we justify valve laziness in making games by anything..ThEy JuSt NeEd NeW tEcHnOlOgY....YEAH F OFF..with that logic we would still only have like gta IV valve just sits on ass and still gets praised
would you rather valve be sensitive about the games they create, or make soulless cashows like every other company, EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc@@catgaeming2025
Even when Valve upgraded Counter-Strike from Source 1 to Source 2 engine, it's also for the sake of keeping their second money printer alive (CS skins economy keep generating them millions each month). Maintaining the aging Source 1 engine is a pain to do for them (just look at the some of the source codes that got leaked) and upgrading it to their latest engine eased some of the tech debt for them. And then there's Neon Prime which is still in development, that I believe is another Game as a Service from Valve. They will exploit the heck of that game through skins economy or some kind, I'm genuinely sure of it.
Valve has had trouble making Left 4 Dead 3 and other games for a few key reasons. First, they use the Source engine, which isn’t as advanced as newer game engines, making it harder to create innovative games. Their flat company structure allows for a lot of creative freedom, but it can also lead to projects being sidelined or losing focus. Additionally, Valve has shifted its attention to maintaining popular games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike, rather than working on new ones. Plus, there’s also a lot of pressure to meet high expectations after the success of previous titles, which can delay development. All these factors make it challenging for Valve to release sequels and new games.
Valve cares about quality, innovation and don't really want to cash grab like most companies do. They created few games but all were classics. They started with source code to Quake engine and they also promoted Mods that became franchise like Counter Strike or even the fanmade 'Black Mesa' remake of Half-Life. Only maybe Rockstar and From Software comes close to Valve in terms of quality. Would love a Half-Life 3 or a new Left 4 Dead hope they make it happen or let the modders do the job
"dont want to cash grab like most companies do." and immediately shuts down csgo and force gamers to buy better pc and play csgo2. and their newest game is a mutiplayer (again)hero shooter. not sure if that correlates to your statement. they have changed.
Short answer, they make more money from Steam in just a couple of months than they would from a brand-new game in its entire lifetime. And that's excluding the investment that goes into the game development and its marketing.
fun fact: uncle gabe is actually one of the first trying brain interfaces in the hope to put it in hardware... this stuff is from a decade ago but imagine valve releasing a vr headset that can do everything without controllers..
Speaking as someone who spent time in the game industry both as a studio and indie dev, considering all the turmoil as of late with studio shutdowns and IPs being canned, Valve should put some of their money into making a "Steam for game devs", a way for small / indie studios to be able to fund their projects. It would create an even bigger market of games for Valve to sell on Steam, and would help ensure the industry doesn't create miserable living conditions for the people actually working on the games.
Alyx was a stupid gimmick that uselessly retconned the story and elucidated nothing, didn’t move the story forward. It is reasonable to not accept bullshit microwaved leftover tech demo nonsense that shits on previous story that people actually care about more than stupid ass gimmicks. And if you care more about the gimmicks then fine have fun in your VR goon chamber for the rest of your life praying to Gabe!
Honestly, Steam gives them a huge advantage of they ever make Portal 3 or HL3 etc etc...given how much they get from the platform, they have damn near endless funding for game development. Honestly I think that's why the overwhelming majority of their games are a hit. Aside from hiring talented developers, the teams are given as I said relatively unlimited funding.
I recently replayed Half Life 2 ...it still holds up in 2024. The graphics are still good. They managed to pull the the Global Illumination way before anyone else got around it in a professional level. It does show its age, but still a seamless experience and worth your time. It reminded me why I was so engaged with this game. It's not just the pretty graphics, but also the physics puzzles that aren't really found in any other game. Most modern games are simply a fps sample asset flip with some nice looking graphics, but that is all. Mostly tired of this type of games, because they don't offer any additional value. If there only was half life episode 3 and half life 3 ... that would be great.
My money is on AI integration. If you've seen the Skyrim mod that uses ChatGPT to implement improv conversations, then you can imagine what a fully socially interactive Half-life 3 could look like.
There's no need for them to make new games. They have a dominant platform that's making them a fortune. It's so dominant that they quit valuing and respecting their customers years ago, because they don't need them bad enough for it to be worth it.
@@baconandx1858 yeah but like, same goes for games.
It's just a justification they gave. In reality they have made a transfert between creativity and money.

I think the scarcity is part of what makes Valve's games so good.
They're not being forced to develop a game they don't want to produce.
The fact that they can produce it on their own time, especially when they get to flex their latest innovations in games technology, seems to be what gives Valve games their polish and loved jank.
On top of that, you'd get bored of it if a Half-Life game was released every year.
passion projects make the best games imo. Alyx was very much a passion project from the dialogue, the characters, and all the fun things in it
I'm pretty sure they talked about this too.

Valve can save mobile from Chinese like Tencent, hoyoverse etc evil capitalize which we think evil like ea , Activision etc but are just copying Tencent evil modle. Valve became a massive business after being a platform. Steam no longer has an unfair advantage with platforms like Blizzard, Epic Games and more creating their own alternatives. That's why I think them going into hardware is a way for them to become a dominating platform again (Steam Deck, VR, etc)
Ah yes, and those platforms still sell their games on steam
A good way to summarize what Steam did for Valve.
Literally gave them a life time of money to spend all the time they need on projects.
No rush to release games on a time or have publishers breathe down their neck.
Would be interesting to see Valve bring HL: Alyx to PC, but somehow innovate the feel of VR into gameplay.
they just decided to not turn passion projects into cash cows, but to make a cash cow to fund passion projects. hl alyx is very much a passion project imo
@damsen978 That makes no sense
@emperorfaiz how? That's literally what they are. Hl alyx is literally just a vr demo thing. Not even a full game experience that everyone who doesn't have a vr can experience. They haven't truly made a New game in a long time.
If Valve were 3DRealms, we'd have never seen Duke Nukem Forever. Technically, we never did see a 3DRealms's DNF, but that's a different story.

Valve is kind of a proof that private companies get to keep their integrity, while public companies generally succumb to the greed of investors.

I was blown away when I first played HL1 in 1998. This game was ahead of its time
It was even more revolutionary at the time.
There have been updates that modernise the graphics.
when i first played half-life 1 on my pc i wowed at the graphics same on half-life 2
@@vylbird8014the AI in HL1 still holds up. And yeah I’ll never forget the opening of that game, the sense of being inside something greater than yourself (reinforced by your character being unremarkable at that point) was really new and immersive.

While i definitely would not be opposed to it, I doubt it will happen. It definitely does connect opposing force and portal to half life naturally (when it never did feel natural) but i also think it messes with the cannon to much for Valve to actually cannonize.

There are always multiple answers to this but one of them is probably the Steam revenue. I hate to say it as i loved the half life games but half life is kinda a glorified tech demo. Pushing/showing game advancements
I remember when Half Life came out... There was nothing like it. From the opening moments it was clear I was experiencing something special and revolutionary.
I think they should try nonuclidian geometry. That might be the big enough push
They can already do that using Portal 2's world portals. Stanley Parable makes heavy use of it.
Makes sense. Remember that tiny Portal spin-off they made to help introduce the steam deck?
yeah sure lets buy like 500€ hardware to play small portal spin-off
@@catgaeming2025 You can still play the game without the steam deck
I am currently playing playing half life alyx and its by far the best vr game .
By the credits of that game, I was on my knees

"Okay, finished the video about Valve not making games, that's off my list."
"Hey, did you hear Valve is making games again?"
"What"
"Valve is making games again"
"What"
"Half-Life 3 (HLX) and like three other things"
"What"
I wish more people acknowledged source filmmaker, there is still nothing quite like it, and as a kid I would watch so many sfm shorts.
It might sound like a stretch but I think Source Filmmaker did more to get people into 3D animation and filmmaking than actual 3D films.
"We use to make games, now we make money."
Steam Deck is literally a laptop merged with a controller. If it runs on Steam Deck, it will run on any PC.
@@Skeletons_Riding_Ostriches the idea behind my comment was HL3 released as Steam deck exclusive. That would be pretty shitty
@MrPrajitura we have people who can port it to pc, and improve all the stuff
So... We just need to find or create innovative technology and give to Valve so they will make new game (probably HL related) to promote that tech.
i like how we justify valve laziness in making games by anything..ThEy JuSt NeEd NeW tEcHnOlOgY....YEAH F OFF..with that logic we would still only have like gta IV valve just sits on ass and still gets praised
would you rather valve be sensitive about the games they create, or make soulless cashows like every other company, EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc@@catgaeming2025
I assume this was before hl 3 and deadlock leaks
5:54 🎵"Wasn't easy keeping busy. Every season brings another reason not to make a game" 🎵
They literally dropped counter strike 2 a few weeks ago lol
That doesn't even count as making a game, they just updated the engine and deleted bunch of stuff from the previous version.
@@bezdomny5882waw so if i make a remaster of a game it doesnt means im making a game at all
@bezdomny5882 they rewrote the code for the new engine but yeah technically not a new game
Cs2 is lietrally the same game with major update.
Even league of legends changed more in 10 years than cs2.
CS2 is kust updated and rebranded CSGO
Aged like milk, like many times before
true
Laughs in deadlock
Eli: "Come on Gordon we got work to do"
Gordon (in sign language): Nah, we'll wait until Valve makes a new innovation to justify continuing our saga.
Valve's likely product path.
1. Steam Deck (portable high-end graphics) - DONE
2. Wireless VR Headset akin to Apple Pro quality (light weight, processing streamed from the steam deck)
3. Orange Cube (Half Life 3 VR, Team Fortress 3 VR, Portal 3 VR)
Short answer, they make more money from Steam in just a couple of months than they would from a brand-new game in its entire lifetime. And that's excluding the investment that goes into the game development and its marketing.
Cause value can’t count to 3
Hopefully we get that iconic Valve startup logo and jingle in a future Half-Life game...
fun fact: uncle gabe is actually one of the first trying brain interfaces in the hope to put it in hardware... this stuff is from a decade ago but imagine valve releasing a vr headset that can do everything without controllers..
But wouldn’t various stray thoughts cause such a control system go haywire? Sounds very annoying. Possibly not even possible to do, though.
Dumbass gimmick. Who cares.
they just made Half-Life: Alyx, they still make games. Also CS2 just came out, they still make games.
Didn’t valve make aperture desk job though? That was like a year ago but still.
that half life 3 menu at the end of the video just gave me like something i cant even describe.
"they don't have to" saved you 8:31 of your time
Speaking as someone who spent time in the game industry both as a studio and indie dev, considering all the turmoil as of late with studio shutdowns and IPs being canned, Valve should put some of their money into making a "Steam for game devs", a way for small / indie studios to be able to fund their projects. It would create an even bigger market of games for Valve to sell on Steam, and would help ensure the industry doesn't create miserable living conditions for the people actually working on the games.
People keep saying Valve doesn't make new games and then they released Alyx. Merely 2 years later all of that just come back again lmao.
Alyx was a stupid gimmick that uselessly retconned the story and elucidated nothing, didn’t move the story forward. It is reasonable to not accept bullshit microwaved leftover tech demo nonsense that shits on previous story that people actually care about more than stupid ass gimmicks. And if you care more about the gimmicks then fine have fun in your VR goon chamber for the rest of your life praying to Gabe!
when will they make full life?
Fun fact, Valve is working on a new game.
A valve can be rusted by steam.
Why would they? Steam is a phenomenal gold mine to milk. An endless one in fact.
Little Fact Valve Does'nt know how to count to 3
SteamOS on steam deck is version 3 checkmate
hey!what is the first 2 trailesr you used in the vidio?i really want to know!
so cs2 wasnt a game
nah
Its just a tech demo
it says «new games» and cs2 is not a new game its a refresh on an old game
There's no need for them to make new games. They have a dominant platform that's making them a fortune. It's so dominant that they quit valuing and respecting their customers years ago, because they don't need them bad enough for it to be worth it.
Valve isn't a game company, but a software company.. They just so happen to be amazing at making games
I mean idk they did make hardware multiple times
@@baconandx1858 yeah but like, same goes for games. Sure they made a few video games but it's mostly to showcase the source engine, or how good steam as a launcher and a quality video game marketplace is.
I mean why else did they make half life alyx right after introducing source 2?
Hardware is sort of like a side thing tbh. they don't focus on it. Besides it's still a pretty good idea to make a steam deck, portable gaming was an open market so valve took advantage of it and got a bunch of sales
@@pissedoffbucketguy9115 i'm pretty sure they were a game company until source 2. that stuff was unstable so they didn't dare to create any games on it for like a decade. thing's changed when hl alyx got the interest of the majority of the employees, so in order to develop it, source 2 was consequently improved.
here's hoping this would turn them back to a game company
@@pinuss I think it's that they started off as a gaming company, and went onto a different path since they realize they didn't need to depend on their games to make profits.
Like that one song with the lyrics "The valve has been corroded by the money" (aka steam)
Though being optimistic isn't all that bad. Half life alyx, csgo source 2, and the handful of updates tf2 is getting could be a sign of bigger or notable things in the future. But yeah they mainly focus on software
