How Much Does A Custom Fitting Actually Affect Performance?

  • Are custom fittings worth it? I headed to Ping's European Fitting Centre in Gainsborough to find out just how much I could gain from using a custom fit driver compared to one off the rack.
    My fitter Paul Rymer got my dialled in in not time and all and the results were very interesting!!

    Have had three fittings in my life (twice for driver, once for a 5W), I can honestly say I’d rather have invested in lessons. I think the only thing the fitters did was help me find a shaft that worked well with my swing. But that did nothing to help with slices, hooks, etc.
    Get lessons first and then get the clubs tailored to your refined game.

    • @hannahholdenNCG

      Fitted clubs can't completely stop all bad shots but they should really help with shaft choice for correct sequencing and lie angle for good ground contact. You can also influence shot shape but this is more helpful if you hit one shot shape. Lessons are always king if you're looking to improve.

    Clubs are ridiculously expensive at this point. If you have the money, by all means get a fitting. Do you know what getting a fitting will do for you?? Take more money out of your wallet. They will ALWAYS upgrade the shaft to something ridiculously priced. Unless you are a really, really good golfer, or very short or very tall, or a very serious bad golfer, I doubt you will save many strokes from a fitting. Like a lot of other people are saying, spend the money on lessons instead. Older clubs work great with a decent swing. If you really want to save strokes, learn how to chip and putt.

    1. Fittings at reputable places are free. 2. If you are really erratic, there is less value in a fitting because the measured parameters jump around a lot BECAUSE of the erratic contact. However, if you are NOT all over the place, they are not worthless because they can help you determine best club head weight, shaft weight, and flex that might help decrease some of your variability.

    I bought a stock driver from a mate and switched out shafts , mainly via weight , until i found the one that put me in control .
    Stock shaft was a 65 s (actual 69) it gave me lots of fades and pulls ,so i put in 45 r gained some feel and distance but hit a lot of high shots so put in a 53 s (actual 55) and bingo baby draw rockets.
    New but outdated shafts are being given away on e bay .
    My rules for testing were keep to the same shaft profile ( mid/high for me ) and stay at standard loft/lie .
    Shafts really do matter its staggering how they affect your feel, speed and shape .

    As an amateur golfer there are two or three keys aspects as to why we don't get a 'quality' custom fit. Firstly, the 'quality' custom fit centres aren't all that well available, and certainly not to the extent shown in many youtube videos. Secondly, the cost....fitting centres only hold the newest clubs and lets be honest prices are going up and up year on year, to the point of being unaffordable to most when playing for fun. Here you are a Ping centre where 14 clubs is probably going to set a player back £3k or £3.5k when fully fitted. Finally....because we are all constantly changing, and 2 or 3 years later we have a different grip, different stance, different technique from a lesson or two......and we've then just lost a fortune because we now need something different to suit everything which has changed since the last fitting. So we continue to search the second hand market for 1/2 price bargains of clubs that are 'good enough' for our needs as a casual player of golf for fun....

    • @AllTradesGeorge
      @AllTradesGeorge 3 місяці тому

      I don't think I've spent as much on my whole second-hand golf kit as it would cost to get a custom fitting for a single club, much less the club. Getting a fitting and brand new clubs would blow my golf budget for several years...

Swung a few different clubs and he made some adjustments and I left with the 2 clubs that I was most consistent with. Really cool dude took his time and it was free. Every place I’ve been to after that the sales people really could give a care less. This is what I think works best for a beginner.
    I have a buddy that got me into this game that shoots 80- hi 80’s every time we go out. He would benefit from a fitting. I keep telling him but he’s stubborn, dude still swings old Skool burner irons, Dunlop wedges, tsi1 driver. Nothing fancy in his bag but the dude is consistent. With a proper fitting I think he could get down to mid 70’s quick.

Also going to the same fitter fairly regularly helps build some familiarity with your swing and narrows down the focus for the fitter in terms of what they can do to optimize your results. ....And of course the obvious - he's likely a very skilled fitter as well!

    I also believe that fittings are not helpful to players who are trying to improve their swing and have not yet “grooved” a swing. Too many variables might change in that time. When you’re happy with your ballstriking THEN you can fine tune your equipment to improve your game. To do that beforehand would be a waste in my opinion. My friend is a 20+ handicapper who just got completely fitted and spent over a couple thousand dollars.
    But, his game has not improved because his swing is the issue. If he really wants to get better he needs lessons and practice. But, his custom fitting based on the 20+ handicap will mean that his lessons and practice will be limited by the changes he already made.
    I just think that’s a backwards way of playing the game. IF you’re content being a weekend warrior who has no intention of bettering your game, then by all means get a fitting that can help straighten your slice a little bit, elevate your shots, etc. However, don’t suddenly decide to become a better golfer, because you’re going to be limited by the “ custom fitting” you had.
    Hannah already has a grooved excellent swing. She definitely can be helped by a custom fitting as you see in this video. But, the fitter basically admitted that it was easy to help her because of the consistency of her swing. Unless you have that before seeing one, I just think you’re potentially going to be wasting a lot of money.

    Great video, I guess it is a lot easier to fit a club for someone that swings as stable as you do.
    For those high HCP thining a fitting won't help them think again. I'm a 35 HCP so my fitting session was much longer than yours :D
    Even though i'm a lousy golfer, getting fitted irons helped me. I was happy with my old randomly bought clubs, they served me well, but my fitted 7 Iron gain me on avg. +4 mph swing speed, +23 mph ball speed, +40m carry, but most importantly I trust my ball to go up in the air. So now I enjoy training and playing more.
    I just got a fitting for my driver. I sliced my old driver and now I bought a new driver that I also slice... But I feel like the driver is easier for me to control and manipulate. Sure I need to go get lessons or wantch some more youtube. But confidence in your equipment helps training, help you lower your score.

    For 3 strokes what was the cost from off the shelf to the custom fitting including the shaft? Is that shaft an off the shelf option for the driver or is it an expensive upgrade option? Very interesting video but I would like to see if the next day or next week you tryout the driver. Do you hit the ball the same or are you going to need more adjustments? The average player does not have a consistent swing to repeat, so day to day your results with the same clubs is unpredictable. You can have the clubs fitted to your swing that session but your engrained swing will take over in the end. If you are a pro or excellent amateur golfer a club fitting will definitely improve your ball striking as they can repeat their swing!! I believe lessons help more than fitted clubs to improve a players ability....

    I didn’t do a fitting but I went to the PGA Superstore with a buddy who was set on getting a Ping SFT. I was looking for a driver and gave them a whirl. Guy that worked there looked at my launch and spin and went and built me an LST in 9.0 turned up to 10 in a low spinning shaft. I bought it that day. Absolutely love it. 330-340yds in the SIM and it’s pretty close to that on the course. My bag, now that I think about it, is like 90% Ping. Gotta love the forgiveness.

    Interesting video - but it isn't really how much does a custom fitting add when you change to a different head....you could have just picked up the 10K head at the beginning....anyone going in to spend $800 on a driver is going to hit it in the bay against a couple other models and pick the best one.

      We changed the shaft, loft and head option to optimise the numbers. The point of this was to show that just picking a driver out of the pro shop (which lots of people still do) is not beneficial and you should get fit

    • @chrisgilligan4968
      @chrisgilligan4968 4 місяці тому

      @@hannahholdenNCG Don't get me wrong, I'm totally a believer in the fitting process. While trying a few heads is very common in the fitting, it isn't really part of the customization that you get in a professional fitting. I just thought that you would focus the vid on the gains achieved through optimizing the shaft, the length of shaft, picking the right lofted head and using the sleeve to dial in the loft to optimize the launch conditions.
      There's no doubt that different heads will suit golfers differently, but I think even modestly serious golfers try a few out at the shop to compare before buying the "off the rack" driver.

      Fittings are necessary to play your best, but do it after you’ve had proper lessons, played a couple a couple of years or a certain number of rounds, and your swing is relatively consistent. Then go get fit. This is what I did some years back and it did wonders for my game. The Ping technology, along with most of the other large manufacturers, is quite amazing. It’s been five years since I’ve been fitted, so this year I will get fit again. My handicap has dropped quite a bit over those years, along with my swing improvements, so my clubs need to change as well. Kudos to you, Hannah, for finding your optimal fit. The really hard part about fitting is finding someone knowledgeable that you can trust, who is truly interested in what’s best for you and trying to up charge you to make more money. That said, the onus is on each of us to have some knowledge about proper fittings, so we know what to expect and what numbers are really important, and it’s not the longest distance that’s most important. Cheers.

    I recently purchased a Ping g430 max. The fitting amounted to the salesman looking at my Ping 3 wood and saying 'yea that will match the g430. It took me a bit of practise before I was able to get some extra distance. However I was getting a dispersion considerably worse than Hannah's. I have since done my research and discovered that a shorter club length would be the way to go. I am not a tall person and my WTF is shorter still. I have managed to acquire a new new Tour AD shaft which is 2" shorter than the standard length shaft that came with the G430. I have only had it a few days but it feels way more comfortable. I have only used it on my net with a range monitor. And so far it is giving very consistent distances. I will seeking more professional advice advice on some tuning of my club. It won't be from the franchise where I purchased the club.
    I would not recommend an off the shelve purchase.
