  • Should you get fitted, or should you get lessons first? A very hard question to answer for most golfers...
    Well in this video we go through everything to consider when thinking about that exact question, as well as some delivery information to be aware of if you are getting fitted but potentially will benefit from changing something first...

    I would say do a baseline online fitting before the lessons. And then after the lessons fine-tune the fitting.

      it's a process. swings change over-time so you should consistently be checking your fitting

    This is the best explanation of club delivery and result that I have seen on UA-cam. Thank You.
    I have been wanting to get fitted for new clubs. When I’m hitting well and consistent I’m only 2-3 over par. But being older the body isn’ t always feeling up to par. So I often experience all those swings mentioned in a round. You have given me more confidence in what to ask and look for when getting fitted. It seems like most fitters want to put me in a club that gives me more distance. I typically hit a 7i 145 carry. But the rest of my clubs are pretty evenly gapped. Since lowering my handicap I would like to get into a more player iron. As you are aware player distance irons are stronger lofted.
    It would be great to see you do a fitting with a slower swing speed showing the difference with various styles of irons. Have a great Christmas. Ric

    Thanks so much for the honesty. Most other fitters would never tell you to get some coaching first, then come back for a fitting if you're trying to improve your game. Never thought about high handicappers with game improvements irons and how those irons may actually be hurting their game. Again, thanks for sharing and being hionest, you're a rare breed. Cheers.

    This is super educational, thank you. I have seen shot stats and had no ability to really comprehend how the club delivery and impact would affect the numbers. I am recently retired, and I am ready to play more golf, so ready to replace my ping G5 clubs. Your spot on, I need to go for an analysis and possible lesson ahead of fitting. Now I feel more prepared and educated. Cheers mate, very well done.

    When I went for a fitting at EP Ross gave a lot of help with regards to the swing itself, so the fitting does also contain some coaching if you’re not getting everything out of the stick in question! Get down there guys!

    i’m coming from a set of cleveland ta7s from like 2002. much more traditional (and sensibly gapped) lofts than most of the game improvement irons i see today. any recommendations for a slightly more “forgiving” club that is still gapped sensibly????

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 місяців тому +2

      My go to for that would be the P770 or Apex Pro. Still fully hollow body construction but more traditional lofts 👌

    What would you recommend for me? I have this dilemma myself I've never had lessons currently a 17 handicap, with standard length clubs burst 6ft 3in I'm sure I need longer clubs as I'm bending over too much in my swing at the moment so do I get fit first then lessons?

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  5 місяців тому

      Get fitted by someone honest who will tell you if now is the right time to change or not, or if it's really making that much difference to you. That's the only advice I can give really mate 👍

    • @chrisroadknight
      @chrisroadknight 5 місяців тому

      My thinking was a fitting first so I have the right length clubs for me, otherwise I could inbed bad habits in my swing with the current too short clubs which I don't want to do

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  5 місяців тому

      @@chrisroadknight hmmm possibly. Might make you crouch a bit more but as soon as you get longer clubs you'll just adjust anyway. Purely from a delivery perspective the length won't necessarily hinder you from getting to a good delivery and learning to be skilfull and control the club. So I'd say I'd would all depend on if it's worth changing now. Because if the delivery isn't in a good spot (i.e angle of attach to shallow and too much dynamic loft at impact) it would be worth sorting that out before buying new clubs because as soon as you do sort it out you'll be buying new clubs again

    Thanks for the info! I’m a high handicapper and I’m getting fit today. I’m not looking to buy new clubs but I just wanted data to see what information could help me with my swing.
    I don’t have many swings where it’s an obvious slice or hook but most of my bad shots are going to be pulls and pushes and when I do have a shot shape it’s typically a fade.
    My main concern about getting fit at this point is that my swing is very inconsistent and I’m not just talking about fat/thin, slice/hook, etc but rather the actual swing itself.
    Since I’m already going to get fit your answer for me would be too late but for future reference and for other players in my particular situation what would you recommend, the fitting or a lesson first? Should one at least have a swing identity? Or would the footing help identify your best swing form? Hopefully the question makes sense.

    you are absolutely 100% right I just had a brutal experience going for a driver fit I was really excited but I have never had lessons and I have lately struggled with leaving the driver face open. The results I was producing were useless and the fit was ended early. A brutal experience for myself and the fitter. If you cannot consistently produce a golf shot with the club you are getting fit with it is not the time to do it. Another piece of advice, don't get fit just before the season starts (if you have winter) because your swing may be totally out of whack. Best to get fit at peak season so your clubs will suit your real golfing ability and not your hack at the beginning of the year. I hit my wedges, irons, hybrids and fairways great and could definitely be fit for those. But as far as driver goes it's way too brutal.

      Not everyone that finds the sports can afford new clubs, nor if they are going to stick with it for an extended period.
      So yes eventually you should do both, but not right off the bat.

    I think one of the biggest problems nowadays is that all the manufacturers constantly talk about CUTTING spin being a good thing. It CAN be a good thing, but to get the optimal launch, distance and landing angle, every ball needs a certain amount of spin to be optimal. Most situations on course will lower spin, so to try and gain distance by cutting spin is quite dangerous and can cause some big dispersion issues.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  7 місяців тому +1

      As you say it completely depends on the player and scenario. There are so many variables which is why weighing up everything is so important. One thing I will say is Vs indoors the ball will spin quite a bit more off the fairway. I've taken the quad out many times so I know what to expect out in real world Vs in the bay and it definitely spins more off grass. Obviously rough, wet conditions ect will play a part in reducing spin but generally speaking it does spin more

    @epgolfstudio I was wondering if there are any criterias that you should get re-fitted. E.g. if your handicap has dropped by a certain amount or other things that might be a sign to get re-fitted.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  7 місяців тому +1

      Biggest thing would always just be swing changes. If you are having lessons and you change something like angle of attack, delivered loft, path or speed significantly then you’d need to re look. It’s very rare the clubs that you play are linked to your handicap

    Great video! So what do you do when you have a high handicap golfer who needs maximum forgiveness but he/she swings slows, launches low and spins low? No way are they going to stop a ball on the green.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  Рік тому +7

      I just fit them for the right clubs for the best ball flight. Obviously I'm not going to fit them into a blade but something in the middle.
      The whole concept of forgiveness is a little twisted in my opinion within golf consumers.
      How much more forgiving is the Stealth then the 770? Not that much in my opinion.
      And it completely depends on your miss, most amateurs will hit thin or fat a lot, in that instance the club doesn't make much difference, or miss left or right, again the forgiveness of the club plays into that miss very little.
      If we are talking you hit it in the toe or heel the drop off you will see from a 770 Vs Stealth is far less than most would think. And that for most people is what would constitute forgiveness. It's just marketed very well.
      Plus if you have a low spin ball flight with no control or stopping power with excessive curvature when delivered badly that would constitute a less forgiving club in my opinion for that player regardless of handicap.
      So I think this is one of the biggest issues in fitting, fitters buying into the marketing from big brands and putting consumers in a box based on handicap and not what they actually need to improve in golf long term.
