I'm a Protestant and I started playing the organ for a Catholic Mass. I am listening to Fr. Mike and the Catechism in a year. I started listening to it to better understand the Mass. I've stayed with it and learned so much and absolutely respect Catholicism.

May God bless you for what you do. Do you not long for the Eucharist being so close to the real presence of Jesus? As a Catholic, I often think of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Their hearts burned and Jesus vanished when He broke the bread because He became present in the form of the bread.

In January 2020 I went to the holy land, as a lifelong Methodist, with a group from the Catholic Church, including their priest. When I walked in the footsteps of Jesus (literally) I realized I was missing some thing. I begin to know that the Methodist religion was not the answer to the Bible for me, but that the Catholic religion was. I came back home and joined the Catholic Church at the age of 68. My life has been changed forever🙏🏻. I realized that the whole Christian world was Catholic for 1,500 years. That completely changed my perspective. Everything I had heard previously about the Catholic faith was just not true. Reading the catechism must have changed your view as well.

I am (almost) 51 and I'm right there with you! I grew up Methodist and finally realized during the lockdown that it wasn't the answer for me. After many years of quietly loving Mary (the way I wasn't supposed to, according to Protestants) I converted. I have found SO much more prayer and scripture reading within the Catholic religion than I ever thought there was. It's amazing and beautiful.

Mary is a stumbling block to Protestant brothers and sisters. Catholics just happily embrace her as a gift from Jesus. She always desires for us to find and love her son. She was created for Him and she never veered from His Will. She is the example of how a human can follow Jesus.

You are so right about Scott Hahn & Brant Pitre. The knowledge they have, and share is truly at another level. They know how to connect the dots giving us a much clearer understanding of Catholicism using scripture, the Catechism, and the writings of our church Fathers. Listening to this has warmed this old mans heart, you ladies are so spiritual, what a gift to the world you both are. Prayers for you both, with special intentions for Anna to find her way home to the one true church instituted by Christ our King.

In regards to Mary, im a convert too, one of the most profound things i heard was during a homily. The priest mentioned how some dont want to give in and embrace Mary. He said imagine Jesus as a child and how he would when he saw his mother run up to her and embrace her and as he grew up how much he loved his mother, even in his dying breath making sure she would have someone responsible for caring for her. Ask yourself if as Christians we are supposed to imitate Christ ask oursleves if we love, cherish and honor Mary as much as Jesus did in his life here on earth.

As a former Evangelical Protestant now a Catholic, I can honestly say the primary reason that Protestants reject the Marian doctrines of the faith is a profound ignorance of Scripture, especially the Old Testament. As an Evangelical before, I really never had an appreciation for or a complete understanding of the Hebrew canon. It was always confusing until I discovered the meaning of the OT types, pre-figurations, and monarchy. Protestants are at a distinct disadvantage still simply because they do not have a comprehensive theology of Mary, the Eucharist, or the New Israel. I recommend "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary" by Dr. Brant Pitre. "Love righteousness, you who judge the earth; think of the Lord in goodness, and seek Him in integrity of heart; because He is found by those who do not test Him, and manifests himself to those who do not disbelieve Him." Wisdom 1: 1-2.😀

Anna, think about apostolic succession this way.
The hands that are placed during Confirmation (the Protestant equivalent of being saved) trace all the way back to Jesus.
The same with the Eucharist - the hands that prepared the host trace all the way back to the Last Supper.
    That’s pretty amazing.

One of the great joys I have in being Catholic is belonging to this huge community of believers ... both globally and throughout history. A dear non-Catholic-Christian lady shared the Easter Vigil service with me this year. When I mentioned that this same service was being celebrated in every Catholic Church throughout the world, her eyes just bugged out. I hadn't thought about it before, but Protestants don't have that. Their history only goes back to the founder of their denomination and for some churches, may not extend past their individual pastor's flock ... until he says or does something that splits the congregation, something I've seen happen too many times just in my local area and in my own lifetime.

Love this ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥. One caveat on the reformation; a lot of bohemian and Scandinavian princes and rulers adopted Lutheranism as their belief system and made it the church of the state. Calvin ran Geneva like an authoritarian church state. Same with Anglicanism, Henry VIII was madly in love with Ann Boleyn, the catholic church refused to annul his marriage, so he simply declared himself the supreme pontiff of the new “church of England”. I would say Protestantism grew because it was supported by many politicians/monarchs.

Her role is similar to Bathsheba's was during the reign of her son Solomon. Brings the concerns of the family/"Kingdom" to her son, the king. Read Kings to get the repeating history of the Queen Mother in Judah (in the line of David).

I am Catholic and I believe that the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is the proper literal interpretation of the gospel and that it was divinely instituted to the apostles at the Last Supper. What I find absolutely fascinating is that the only two churches that believe in the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist are the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. And those are the only two churches with true Apostolic succession. The literal interpretation of the Eucharist (this IS my body) is so plain to see in scripture that I am stunned that no other church makes the claim of Christ’s true presence in the Eucharist. It would be so easy for a Protestant pastor to say “I have the authority to transform the bread and wine into the true body and blood of Christ, I don’t need authority from the Catholic or Orthodox Church.” But no other church outside the apostolic churches will make this claim. One reason is that they do not believe the doctrine but in this I see the hand of God working. The Lord has, in my opinion, protected His holy sacrament from those who do not have His authority to preform the sacrament. Protestants, by in large, read the gospel literally. It’s so surprising to me that they do not take Christ’s words at the Last Supper literally. I think this unbelief itself is the work of the Holy Spirit to protect the validity of the sacrament. Having said all this, I think Protestants get A LOT right about the gospel and they adore the Word of God. They are true Christians. I just think their blind spot with respect to the Holy Eucharist is amazing.

    • @pete8684
      @pete8684 Рік тому +2

Excellent write up. The other thing I'll add is that the old covenant wasn't just for the Isralites to sacrifice animals for their sins but they were required to it eat it as well. Which is a typological transition when it comes to John 6 - Christ doubles down on those who found the teaching too hard when He clearly states that one must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Now Leviticus forbids the drinking of blood but also states that life is in the blood. Back to John 6 and Christ states that unless you drink His blood you have no life in you.
It is clear that one must have faith like the apostles who accepted this teaching literally. There was no explanation required because they eventually understood the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.
And if someone really thinks it's symbolic, why is St Paul warning people about being guilty of consuming Christ in an unworthy manner. How can you eat and drink Christ in an unworthy manner if it's symbolic.
      * “Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ, which have come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God... They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, Ash that suffered for our sins and that the Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes.” [St. Ignatius of Antioch - Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6-7 (c. A.D. 110)].
      God bless.

This is the most amazing podcast I have seen in a long time. This literally is the KEY to the churches moving forward into the kingdom
of God. My mother was baptist and my dad was catholic and I am both. I was baptized Catholic and took my first Holy communion at age 8. Got born again at age 12 in the Baptist church. Would not trade any of those experiences for anything. I have always thought that the protestants
would bring balance to the Mary dogmas if they would study the scriptures about her and meditate with the Holy Spirit's help. Mary is the first fruits of the bride of Christ (Revelation 12). She is the answer to women being over sexualized in our culture. Catholic men treat me with more respect than protestant men for the most part and think it is due to reverencing Mary. Womanhood is supposed to be reverenced. Years ago it was culturally frowned upon even to swear in
the presence of a woman. Catholics and protestants together is God's will for this time.
In the Middle Ages it was common to say to people in conversation I pray thee, meaning I beseech thee as in a strong request. It was not reserved for speaking to God and if you read books
written in those days or about those days(Robin Hood) you will find I pray thee in common usage as people communicated to each other. It did not have any thing to do with worship. Example: I pray thee, come to the meeting in Nottingham Square, or I pray thee , come sup with us today. Etc. Pray meant to beseech intently to people or to God. It did not and still does not mean worship. It stopped being used in common speech, but in the Catholic Church it is still used to communicate with the body of Christ in heaven and to God.
Jesus spoke to saints Moses and Elijah on the mount of transfiguration. Jesus told the Pharisees when they mocked Him about speaking with Abraham, "God is a God of the living , not the dead."
The real misunderstanding between Catholics and Protestants is about the mysteries of the Gospel. Mystical truths which the Church is careful to examine for authenticity. here is an example of mystical truths: Jesus is the Living word ( nothing ceases to exist it only changes form)
He is the Written Word , the Manifest Word, the Eternal Word, The Word Made Flesh, the Word made Bread and Wine
.Many protestants do not believe in the five fold ministry.(Jesus ascended on high and gave gifts to men ..etc) The priest is supposed to be 5 fold ministry APOSTOLIC. Authority. Some Pentecostals
especially charismatics believe in the restoration of Apostles and Prophets.
There are many other things I could say, but not enough room in comment section.
    Blessings.

Maybe you'll like to know that in Italian, in today's current language,
the expression "ti prego" [literally in English: "I pray you"] simply means "please..."
We use this verb in at least 3 ways (besides the religious meaning of the verb "to pray")
      1) please - as a kind request to someone. Ti prego = "Please give me that glass over there"
      2) please - as a strong plea to someone.
Ti prego = "Please, I urgently need..."
      3) Ask - in written formal letters or emails from companies or public authorities or from a medical ambulatory. For example:
Noi la preghiamo [literally: We pray you] =
"we ask you to come to the medical examination at 11 a.m."
Or "we ask you to join the meeting with the mayor at 5 p.m."
      God Bless
Thank you for your message - meditation.

... and here is another very popular phrase in Italian:
"Vi prego, fate silenzio!" = in English "Silence, please!" - but the literal translation from Italian is "I pray you, silence!"
      (Obviously talking to a group of people 🙂 . It's not a religious prayer 😁 )

When the Holy Spirit Decended on the Apostles at Pentacost, they were endowed with the power of tongues and the powers to actually go out and build The Church from the ground up. They, in turn, created the Church and the Bishophood, if you will by passing those powers onto their chosen Bishops. And so on and so on. Much of this is included in the early Church history which you indicated you want to learn more about. Perhaps the best argument for Apostolic Succession is simply the number of Protestant Churchs that have popped up and continue to pop up. The process of becoming a Bishop is very defined, and takes the powers of the Bishops to pass those powers on to new Bishops. There is no such requirement for Protestant ministers. Literally, anyone can start a new protestant Church tomorrow and call themselves a Minister. We don't believe that as Catholics. The Priesthood is not just a club of good ole boys who like the same thing. The Priesthood is a very special position endowed with powers that are passed on through Apostolic Succession give authority to the Priests. If you ask a Protestant minister from where they get their authority, it is either self-given or poo-poo'd as not important. Once you accept that early Christianity matters, it becomes harder and harder to deny Catholic teachings. I mean, the Catholics have had 2000 years to debate and figure it out. And all of the Catholic teachings come as a result of the common types of challenges and questions that you are asking.

Thank you so much to both Sara and Anna for this conversation. This is an amazing time in history when some of the wounds of the Protestant Reformation (or the Protestant Deformation, as some call it) are being healed. As Christians we should be loving each other even if we disagree with each other's theology. Speaking of loving each other, there seem to be some Catholics for whom loving Pope Francis is a challenge. Within Catholicism, there seems to be a lot of tension between Catholics who want to keep things the same and Catholics who want to change things. I pray that God would help those two sides to love each other too.

I love your open mind. As I said early on, you will convert to Catholocism before this is all said and done. May a recommend a free online course from Hillsdale College called Ancient Christianity. I found it very helpful. Christians today are mistaken in thinking that Christianity was defined with the Pentecost and that cannot be more mistaken. Early Christianity was very difficult with lots of persecution and infighting by the Bishops. Outright challenges to the Apostles teachings and interpretation of who Jesus was/is, who Mary is, was, and how to worship were not cut and dried during a 3 year minister by our Lord Jesus Christ. The Protestant Reformation was a horrible break in The Church, as was the Chism between the eastern and western church. But you are right, I went down these same rabbit holes. The more you learn the more you will realize, as many many have, that everything leads back to Catholicism. Yes we have some very negative history but that is due to the sinful nature of man, not the teachings. Jesus wants all of the denominations to be united under one Kingdom of God. I pray every day it will happen. The more you know, the more everything leads to Catholocism. God Bless you. You do know you can go through the RCIA process without committing to join the Catholic Church. You can decide to leave the process at any time. These classes typically start in September so now is a good time to contact your local parish to get more info. Guess what, the Catholic Church recognizes your Protestant baptism, so we aren't totally divide. God Bless!

She is also our intercessory to Jesus as all the Saints are. We can talk to her as a Mom to her Son and about her Son. I learned in RCIA that we don’t pray to Mary we pray THROUGH Mary to her Son. I don't have the answer to why apostolic succession is required, but I find it hard to digest how just graduating in Theology qualifies anybody in the protestant circle to be a pastor. Apostolic succession in that sense I think is important for it's validity. Human at list in this life won't live forever so they need successors.

God needed Mary’s fiat for his plan of salvation because it was through our free will that the human race rejected God and therefore, it must also be through the corporation of the human race for our salvation. God will never violate anyone’s free will because his highest attribute is that he is Love. It was through a woman that sin entered the world and it was through another woman, Mary that salvation came through Jesus, Ga. 4:4. And it was through Adam disobedience but Jesus the new Adam obedience that salvation came to the human race. God need Mary to freely choose to be his mother. At that point Jesus became man he could act as both priest and victim to offer the perfect sacrifice to bring about the salvation of souls for all those who respond to his call of repentance and communion.

So good! I noticed Anna said she contemplates Mary’s faith as something beautiful. I like that. But! I wonder what that contemplation would look like when it focused on Mary’s love for Jesus. Love is the greatest of the theological virtues, not faith. Luther seems to think faith is the greatest of the theological virtues and what everything the Bible hinges on. I would say love and the two laws that say you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul, and that you should love your neighbor as yourself. Luther seemed very preoccupied about salvation, and for some reason this bone he picked about who is and isn’t saved, makes it so easy to condemn and save others.
My brothers who walked away from Catholicism also wonder about the necessity of apostolic succession in validating the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Gonna have to think about that one!

Their traditions go back to Jesus time and the time of the early Church. Very few evangelicals and protestant study the history of the early church. They usually end with the apostles. But writers after them explain teachings and practice of the early Church. Almost all of them were bishops, people with a great oversite of the happening in the Church. Just go and explore that.

Prayer means to request. Worship always involves a sacrifice. When we pray to the angels, saints, it’s to ask for there help. So you can say we are praying with them. When Jesus prayed in the garden of gethsemane during his passion to the Father. The father sent Him an angel. Jesus didn’t say to the angel I don’t need you, I can go straight to the Father. When God estimated his covenant, it was to undo the effects of the fall and bring heaven an earth together.

For Apostolic Succession he named names Simon his first Rock of the church, in Acts when Matthias is voted in to assume the office of Judas Iscariot it is established that ALL offices will be successional in nature with the new holders being prayerfully elected with the Holy Spirit's blessing. You are Peter and upon this Rock, I will build my Church. Jesus specifically chose 12 men who were the 1st Bishops and Peter was chosen by Jesus as the 1st Pope. The reason Roman Catholics recognise the Orthodox Church's Eucharist, is because there was an unbroken succession from one of the apostles. Only the Bishops are given the authority by God to ordain Priests. When Martin Luther left the church, he knew that his future followers would not be receiving the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Apostolic succession is important for transmission of the faith. Otherwise, you have the situation the protestants have, inventing new traditions. Apostolic tradition hands over the teaching about the real presence, but also the true and the right worship where this is celebrated. The liturgy of the early church was preserved until today. Churches with the apostolic succession have preserved the structure: readings of the bible (many people at that time were illiterate), homily ( explaining the teaching of the Church and encouraging brethren in the time of the persecution) and the Eucharistic meal ( Lords supper). Laying hands was the practice of the transmission of the holy deposit of the Church and empowerment of the person for the ministry. ( See Elijah and Elisha, anointing of kings and priests in the OT and Paul's warning not to lay hands to quick to someone).

I just happened across this video in my UA-cam feeds. You are both very sweet and it was so interesting listening to your conversation.
I must say that the early Church looked nothing like today's Roman Catholicism. Catholicism is definitely a salvation through works religion (definitely a religion). Most Catholics have never even read the Bible. They are not encouraged to do so. The Gospel of salvation is so simple. One must be born again to be saved. The Catholic church is definitely a mission field.
I grew up in Italy to missionary parents. One of my friends from high school (a Christian boarding school) is now a Catholic priest and I've been conversing with him through Facebook for a couple years now. Ugh...there's so much I want to say!! I do believe some Catholics are saved, but it's usually someone who grew up deeply steeped in Catholicism and one day became saved by the Truth that is in the Bible...and usually they can't let go of the Catholic title (the name only, not the practice) because it's part of their heritage (?...I'm not sure how to explain what I'm trying to say) like Italians.
