Protestant Looks Into Catholicism: One Year Later

  • This video will be released exactly one year after the release of my video touring St. John Cantius, which not only changed the trajectory of my UA-cam channel, but led me down a path of investigating the claims of Catholicism. This journey has put me in touch with some of the brightest Catholic apologists of our time, caused me to read some incredible books, and perhaps best of all it has allowed me to forge friendships with some wonderful people. After a year of thinking, praying, and wrestling, I find myself faced with some of the questions I was asking early on, albeit with greater clarity on the arguments from all sides. I'm not at a point of reaching conclusions, but I wanted to share an update with you all as you all have played such a large part in this journey. Thank you all for the love and support every step of the way.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a UA-cam channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

Hey everyone! I wanted to add a few thoughts here in the comments. First, thanks to all of you who have been so kind and supportive throughout this journey. The journey of investigation is by no means over. Rather, when I realized it had been a year since my tour at St. John Cantius, I thought it would be a fitting time for reflection. That is the occasion of this video, not any grand announcements. Second, there will be two more videos in this series. Next, I will make a video on one year of looking into Orthodox. That will be followed by a video on why I'm a Protestant. None of these will be conclusive. Rather, they're a glimpse into my thought process. Finally, I'd like to add that this is a very imperfect video. I have so many more thoughts than I could fit into this video. It is incomplete in both its appreciations and concerns. However, it was a video I knew I could record dozens of times and still not be happy with. In the end I decided to just upload it as it came out on the first take. Thanks in advance for your grace and kindness. With much love, Austin.

I was raised Catholic. Married young, divorced young. In midlife (early 40's) went non-denominational. I saw most of the questions other Christian denominations have. This video touches on
John 6:53 Jesus says "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood you shall not have life within you"
Then at the last supper. Jesus says "This is My Body" - "This is the cup of my blood" - "Do this (the Eucharist) in memory of Me".
Then there Paul's teachings about it in 1rst Corinthians chapter 11 Where he speaks about "Sick and infirm and some died" receiving in an unworthy manner, thus bringing condemnation upon themselves for "not discerning the Lord's body".
Then there is Hebrews 5 :4 "Speaking on the Priesthood of Aaron. "No man takes this authority unto himself but only as called by God as Aaron was"
Then on Confession Read John 20 verses 19 Through 23.
There is much more. If you're interested go to the St Helena Catholic Church website on UA-cam.
Search for Fr Mark Beard videos.
He passed away August 2nd due to a car accident. But his homilies are very educational.
On Purgatory read Matthew 18 verses 19 Through 35. But pay particular attention to verse 34 and 35 and know that it is Jesus saying it.
      As well there is 1 Peter 3 : 18, 19, + 20.
      And 1 Peter 4 : 6
But again really try and process John 6 : 53. Jesus words not mine
We know every word of God is true. Jesus is not a liar.
The Bible says "There is One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism".
Then the is the words of Jesus to Peter.
"Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church," (note church being singular)
But do check out Fr Mark Beard's Homilies on St Helena Catholic Church website. He dives into why we do what we do.
Also if your interested another priest you might want to look into is Fr Chad Ripperger. He is as guest on a podcast hosted by 'Chris Stefanick'.. Fr Ripperger is an Exorcist Priest.
      But look up podcast titled
      Q + A with an Exorcist Part 1
(There are parts 2,3, 4, 5, and 6 as well.)
Fr Chad relates his communications with the demons in those who are possessed.
I know it can be a scary topic. But I learned so much from his talks.
As a life long (for the most part,) Catholic, Listening to what he learned from the demons in those exorcisms helped me to understand Mary's place in our spiritual lives
The demons hate her,. But truly informative stuff.
Also Fr Ripperger has a three Audio Series talk on "Generational Spirits" Also on UA-cam.
The Bible tells us "He will strike at your heel. And you will strike at his head".
The devil's had full knowledge and understanding of all that would come to be. In Short they knew that one day Jesus would become a man, and Mary would become His mother. But the demons refused to bend a knee to Jesus and Mary Both. Thus they said we will rule in hell rather than serve in heaven. Why? Simply because they were more glorious than any human. They are more powerful than any human. But God's plan was known to them. We have the luxury of having been born ignorant of the bigger picture.
The fallen angels had one chance because they had full knowledge of things. Luckily for us we don't, thus God's mercy for us is not a one shot deal.
I'm a nobody. Just a Catholic who has searched for the Truth. Hopefully these things help you sort it out
      God bless

@@R_manatee That is not really the best way to answer everyday questions. RCIA is for those who are actually in the process of formally converting. It is for those with the intention of joining.
It would not be fair to anyone involved. Those who are joining deserve to have fellow catechumens in class. Having the instructors diverted from the purpose of guiding catechumens would not be fair. It would not be fair to have someone who isn't trying to join be exploring his questions in the incorrect format.

I'm a convert from Protestantism to Catholicism. I cannot imagine wrestling with the complexities of conversion with an audience following me! It's a huge cultural and theological shift and then there's the dynamics of friendships and family relationships. In the end, there came to be a point where I couldn't not be Catholic (if that makes sense). Jesus called me in the Eucharist and there was no denying him. Most memorable part of my journey through the "Brethren In Christ" and the Espiscopal organizations. I am very thankful for this journey as well as being critical of it. My journey is similar but a very lite version of Father Donald Callaway's journey. I will always be a catechumen as I learn more about my faith. Thank you for your honesty Austin! The first year or two after I became Catholic I often fell into the trap of thinking that it was simply a matter of people hearing/reading the right thing or finding out what the Church actually teaches (and what she is). But thankfully I have realised that conversion as well as faith is always a gift from God. I can maybe help people by rooting out misconceptions, and more importanly by living my life as a joyful witness to Christ, but at the end of the day we have to let the Holy Spirit work in the hearts of all of us and be obedient and attentive to him whereever we are at.

*R Catholicism has nothing to do with God and His Words. R Catholic Church contradicts Scriptures in every possible ways!*
      1. Catholics say Mary was sinless. But BIBLE says Mary offered a sinner's offering. She was a sinner. Bible says Mary needed a Saviour. Lk 2:23-24, Lev 12:6-8, Rom 3:10.
      2. Catholics say clergies must be celibate. Yet BIBLE says Peter (supposed R Church first leader) had mother in law. Bible says celibacy is not a qualification for clergies. Mat 8:14-15, Mar 1:30-31, Luk 4:38-39.
      3. Catholics say Mary was forever virgin. Yet BIBLE says Jesus had brothers and sisters. Mary was not perpetually virgin. Mk 6:3, Mat 13:55, Mat 27:56, Mar 6:3, Mar 15:40, Mar 15:47.
      4. Catholics say confess to R priests in a box. BIBLE says nothing about confessing to priests in a box. Bible says confess to GOD only. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6, Romans 10:9-10.
      5. Catholics say drink of the physical blood of Jesus. Yet OT and NT both say do not drink blood. Acts 15, Lev 7:26.
      6. Catholics say pray to passed on Mary and "saints". Yet BIBLE says do not contact the dead. NT Church did not record a single case of NT believers asking passed on saints to pray for them. Deut 18:11, Isaiah 8:19.
      7. Catholics make and bow down to statues. BIBLE says do not bow down to graven images (statues). Deut 4, Exo 20:4-5.
      8. Catholics sprinkles “holy water”. But NT Church of the Bible mentioned nothing about “holy water”. There was no record of any Apostles sprinkling “holy water” on believers. Catholics claimed “holy water” came from OT. Yet Num 5:17 says “holy water” was water used to test adulterous women in OT temple. Hardly the same. Those were for Old Covenant Jews. Not New Testament Christians.
      9. Catholics say Peter was pope - bishop of all bishops. Yet BIBLE says Peter was just a leader of the Jerusalem Church. Bible says nothing of the office of bishop of bishops. Gal 2:9, Mat 16:18.
      10. Catholics say there is a seat of Peter. Yet BIBLE says nothing about it. Jesus said “not to lord over others”.
      11. Catholics has clergy priesthood. Bible says clergy priesthood was done away with in New Testament. There is no clergy priesthood in NT. Heb 7:27, 9:12, 10:10.
      12. Catholics preaches Works Salvation (faith + good works + partake R sacraments + submit to R pontiff + be in R Church + devote to Mary = to be saved). Yet Bible says “believe in Jesus to be saved”. Bible says Works Salvation is cursed. Gal 1:8-9. Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10.
      13. Catholics says they must do Penance to atone for their sins. Yet Bible says repent, confess and sins will be forgiven. Catholic Bible changes the word “repentance” in NT into “penance”. Original Greek NT does not use or mean the word penance. Penance = work to atone for sins. Repentance = change of heart. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6.
      14. Catholics say Mary went straight to heaven without dying. Yet Bible says nothing about it.
      15. Catholics say Islam and Christianity have the same GOD. Yet Islam doesn't believe in death and resurrection of Jesus and Trinity.

But, He did and I happily joined the Church. I didn’t struggle with the Papacy. I did struggle with Mary and it took another ten years or so until I could truly recognize Mary as my spiritual mother. Tad , it should not be that hard in understanding Blessed Mary ,. The reason it is so hard that 2 dogmas about Mary are not found in Scripture.
So they should not be dogmas , just stick to the Mary of the Gospels and not spend 1900 years like the Bishops to finally come up with a dogma of the Assumption.

@@mayvelynbalo8288 Yes, that's I think a worldwide problem for the Protestants, that they can't understand praying to the saints, but then don't have a problem with living people praying for them? As I've explained it, you should be thinking the other way around, after all, aren't people in Heaven much more capable since they have God's real favor, of getting your request granted, as opposed to somebody down here whom might be sinner central?
I will say though, not completely understanding the Protestant mind, that I think I can see it from a possible angle of theirs, and that is the stranger angle. IOW, all those long dead saints, never knew you, etc. whereas people down here might pray for you (IOW, strangers (saints) wouldn't pray for you). And that makes sense to me, but the problem is as I described earlier, they draw God's favor for sure, whereas you cannot be so sure about your friends. IOW, they won the battle and are up there in Heaven, so wouldn't they have much more sway in almost all cases than somebody still down here? I realize it's not a perfect argument, but as they are so wholly into God up there, how could they turn you down? If they are with God, they will do it, but it doesn't mean God will automatically grant it of course. Sheesh, probably half of our friends would mean to pray for you, and totally forget about it, especially if it were a new thing for them to pray for you.
I think also, some people concerning that issue, think too much upon the earthly scene, and just think the dead cannot help you. And yet, there's no people more alive, and more into God, than those up there. Now I'm not sure I would pray to either of my parents, no matter how well they lived, because I really don't know if they made it up there or not, but the recognized saints, there's no doubts. I'm sure the saints often take us up as sort of their children, especially considering so many of them were religious and never had children.

What pushed me away from catholicism was that Marian worship. Yes, I know technically catholicism does not teach the worship of Mary.
But somehow, every one of the women I met all they do is tell me and each other to pray to Mary and ask her to do XYZ and that if I would put her statue in a certain place in my house and pray the Rosary in front of it then she'd do this or that for me.
So much constantly about asking Mary to do specific things. Where to put the statues or paintings for her to do more for me.
      It was Never Jesus.
Then the infant of Prague. Oh man. I can't tell you how many told me in needed to have a small infant of Prague in my home and to care well for it, changing it's robes and offering special prayer , and that if I pray *specifically* to the infant then he would do XYZ. Not that Jesus would, that * the infant of Prague* would.
If I don't buy the blessed beeswax candles we will die when the prophecy of padre Pio comes true.
So, in my study I really did change my mind, and could no longer adhere to I western protestantism. I accept perpetual virginity and real presence of Christ in to he eucharist, baptismal regeneration .
It's just so bizarre to me that in all instances people are told to burry saint statues in the yard to sell their house, or dress and care for and offer personal sacrifice to the infant of Prague statue to get him to do things .
Theres more, but that's the most impressed on my mind.

      The Church!
To whom did Jesus promised the gates of hell will not prevail against, the Church or the Bible?
      The Church!
Did Jesus found His Church over man or a Bible?
Over a man name Simon whose name He changed to Kepha which in Aramaic only means Rock and which the Gospel of John transliterated as "Cephas", into Greek. It is important to note that Simon is never called "Evna" in Aramaic, a word that means pebble or small stone.
      JOHN 1:42
      42. He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).
So Jesus builds His one and only Church on Peter, just as Matthew says:
      MATTHEW 16:18
      18. “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Jesús gave a catholic mission to His One and only Church, to go to all nations, not to the Bible but to men, promising never to abandon its members, remaining with them until the end of times in spite of any imperfections of its individual members:
      MATTHEW, 28:19-20
      19. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
      20. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you Always to the close of the age.
      May God bless your discernment.

Hey Austin, I never comment on anything but felt the need to express my appreciation for your channel here. Your channel started to take off around the same time I started to have my own crisis of faith about my conversion from Catholicism to Protestant Christianity. I appreciate this video in particular because I have seen many debates and read a few books from people who are settled in their convictions and you can't help but feel the urgency to be as settled as they are and have all your questions answered. I confess I have been that guy who has been blown about with every wind of doctrine - going to Anglican, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Non-denom churches; visiting Catholic masses like yourself; and meeting with priests and pastors just to talk it out. It is a difficult trial to live through and if I ever saw you irl I'd buy you a beer (or coffee), shake your hand, or something. With all the polemics and polarization in the world especially on the internet, you stand as one of the few reasonable voices out there.
God bless you, your marriage, your family, and your ministry. I stand with you in your Protestant convictions. Keep up your work! I'm sure there are many like myself who watch but remain silent though your videos are a great help.

Beautiful words and synopsis. Both this comment and the video. Brother every thing you going thru is normal and good too but While it can also feel like a crises too sometimes. I was a pastor for decades and eventually became catholic and Orthodox. But then eventually left both. so I spent my lifetime struggling with it all too. It’s very difficult living in these times while also good because we have access and knowledge to everything now. It’s good that we question our faith and beliefs and logical thinking and reasoning and not just blindly accept everything. Plus also the sincerity to find “the truth” no matter where it leads us. But here I am as an older guy have been in many churches and decades of ministry and still struggling to understand and find where exactly this “truth” is fully found.

@@saintejeannedarc9460 hi friend, thanks for your post.
i left catholicism ultimately for a few reasons.
1 - they can't answer direct, clear and revealing Bible questions.
2 - their 'church' is so clearly described in Scripture, there's no mistaking it's apostasy.
3 - Bible says this 'church' doesn't not know God, love Christ nor walk in Truth - unambiguously this is proven.
4 - the teaching of 'hell', shows this 'church' truly hates our Creator.
5 - there is more, but this is sufficient.
yes, i do believe there are many catholics who will be in Heaven and are sincere and God loving Christians.
unfortunately, they have been brainwashed (as i was) and haven't done as 1 Thess 5:21 dictates.
while they are sincerely brothers and sisters - the system they belong to is the most demonic on earth.

I doubt he will be convinced, it takes a long time for protestants to let go of their cultural traditions and biases, & even then, their whole family & community will shun them, attack them, etc. It's a big leap that many take 10years to make, Austin in 1 year with a young new wife would never make that sacrifice. Like Jesus said, “Take up your cross and follow Me” - that' not easy for most of us. He would probably follow orthodoxy if ever, at least his community won't shun or ostracize him. Still better bec it has apostolic tradition though they're not united with the Body of Christ.

All the things you mentioned as not being fully convinced of in Catholicism are exactly the same for me. Though the Orthodox Church doesn’t have the papacy and though their teachings about Mary differ somewhat from Catholicism, I’m still somewhat stuck when it comes to Mary. Though I must say that after all my studies and visits to Catholic and Orthodox parishes, I do have a greater love for Mary and much more understanding and appreciation for her singular and unique role in salvation history. As much as I have at times so wanted to throw all inhibitions to the wind and dive in to one of these ancient churches, I realize that I am Protestant to the core but with major ancient church sympathies. I’m just not sure what God wants me to do with this. But one thing I know for sure: I love my Orthodox and Catholic fellow believers! L Jones, as a another Catholic who greatly admires Austin for all the reasons you stated and more, I have to insist that fellowship among Christians is not all that really matters. We're in the business of working out our salvation with fear and trembling, and we know that this depends in part on holding true beliefs about God's revelation. Since Protestants and Catholics differ extensively and fundamentally on many such beliefs, it is of paramount importance to settle them, so that believing rightly we might be saved. Hence we Catholics should care a very great deal whether or not Austin converts, precisely because ultimate spiritual destiny is at stake. The same holds in reverse of course: if Catholicism is false and Protestantism true, then we must leave the former for the latter again for the same reason.
Pluralism is the very atmosphere we breathe in today; but we know that Christ, being undivided, founded only one saving faith in a single community. We must therefore resist any tendency in Christianity that would reduce it to the lowest common denominator.

Earlier you intimated that you've sought to "step out of the way" when you've interviewed folks, but i want to say that even in that effort, I think we've all witnessed your genuine inquisitiveness and seen the fruit of charity as you've engaged with perspectives you perhaps didn't agree with. Last year I reverted to the Catholic Church and know what you speak if in terms of the difference in cultural emphasis on evangelism and desiring for others to know the Gospel. It is one of the things that I feel the Lord is restoring to the Catholic Church through the conversion and reversion of many Protestants to the Catholic Church. Know that you have a brother in me, a Catholic, who is zealous for the joy of the Gospel to spread through the world, in and out of the Catholic Church.

I just think you’ve done a great job, really. You’ve been an excellent resource for me, as I see myself in you in many ways. For the past few years, I have also had a huge spiritual journey. I’ve spent a year attending an Antiochian Orthodox Church. I’ve spent over a year thinking I’m Catholic. I’ve gone “back home” to my childhood faith of mainstream Lutheranism. I’ve hopped next door to Anglicanism, and I’ve even had bouts of such extreme frustration that I walk away entirely for weeks. My journey still isn’t over, and like you said, it’s a “can of worms I sometimes wish I hadn’t opened” sort of thing. But man has it been a powerful experience.
You’ve been great at what you do, and I just encourage you to continue trying to strike that balance of personal wrestling and professional questioning. Keep up the endurance. As I always think back to, “Israel” translates to “he who wrestles with God.” These questions aren’t easy, and God fully knows that. Just continue to pray for guidance. Ask for guidance on properly addressing that can of worms, and patience in the meantime. God bless you, my friend.
