- This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
We begin our examination of the second commandment, to not take the Lord’s name in vain. Fr. Mike emphasizes that God has revealed his sacred name to us, and it is our duty to treat that name with reverence. He also emphasizes just how easy it is for us to take the Lord’s name in vain in our day and age, and how vitally important it is for us to treat his holy name with respect. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2142-2149.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

A few years ago, I heard someone say that whenever he hears the Lord's name used improperly, he silently prays the following, "Praise His holy name." I have started doing this as well. Watching television and movies, I certainly get extra praying done.
“Heck is where people go who don’t believe in Gosh!” I always cringe whenever I hear Fr. Mike use those two words as I was taught they are just as bad as saying the real words “hell” and God. They are just “substitutes” and Jesus said to let your “Yea” be “yea” and your “nay” be “nay.”
Whenever I hear someone say, “Jesus Christ” as a slang term, I always say:”Oh! He’s my Best Friend!!”
“Alabado sea su santo Nombre “
“Lord have mercy on us “ is another way to say when we hear the Name of God used in vain
I think that may have been something Padre Pios mother told him to do as a kid. I may be wrong though
Fr Mike, I am from Mexico and I am so happy to say that we don’t have a swear word for God…thanks be to God 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Praying for you Fr Mike and all here. God Bless. Claire.

@James_RC Yes! Amen! The "Holy Awe" at The Latin Mass is Beautiful! The demons Hate Latin Prayers! They sheek & wail in Pain when certain Latin Prayers are said. Latin is The Sacred Language of our Mother Church. You don't have to understand Latin, just being the Presence of God & Praising His Holy Name! God Bless!

Philippians 2:10
*These words are not mine.* These are the words the Ruach HaKodesh (YAHUAH's Set-Apart Spirit) uttered through me when I prayed to YAHUAH; asking him what *he wants* me to say, knowing the truth. To they with ears:
"Know that YAHUAH is the name of the Most High and YAHUsha is the name of The Son.
Come out of her, my people, who have fallen to the deceit of Constantine. Who know not my name and say they love me. I have made myself known. I have heard you and I am here.
There are many who are yours to be saved. I am he who knows all that you are. Come to me, here are they who are mine. Make haste to come, here are we. Give in to them who speak of me, they are yours. I am here for you. Know that all is for them, here are we.
Give not to them that are against me. I am he who sees all you do. Come to me out of her, all are here for me. Do what I say. Out of her, come. All are here."
Exodus 3:13-15 KJV
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
John 5:43 KJV
43 *I am come in my Father's name,* and ye receive me not: *if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.*

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and *touch not the unclean thing;* *and I will receive you.*
Isaiah 52:6-7 KJV
6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.
7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
2 Corinthians 6:1-2 KJV
1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
Romans 10:1-3 KJV
1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Romans 10:13-17 KJV
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 *How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?*
15 *And how shall they preach, except they be sent?* as it is written, *How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!*
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. *For Esaias saith,* Lord, *who hath believed our report?*
17 *So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.*
Nahum 1:7 KJV
7 The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and *he knoweth them that trust in him.*

Set a watch before my mouth a guard at the door of my lips 🙏🏻
I am certainly guilty of saying OMG and GD, but these days it just comes flying out of my mouth when I say it, so I ask forgiveness when I catch myself. I fuss at my adult children when they say JC. Using curse words is one of those sins I always have to confess every time. I'm still working on it and the Holy Spirit is helping me
Lord, I offer to You all the events of my past and entrust to Your care all that will happen in the future. Free me from past hurts and sins, and alleviate my worries about the future. Help me to meet You and Your abundant Mercy in this present moment alone. Jesus, I trust in You.

Every time I hear the Lord's name used in vain, I think to myself, "Holy is His name", so the blasphemy provokes a prayer. How I wish the writers of TV shows and movies would stop writing blasphemous words into their scripts and actors would refuse to speak them.
Thank you and God bless you Fr. Mike and everyone here. 🙏🫶📿🕊️🙏

Hello everyone & Happy Day 278!🙏😊
Hi Elizabeth 👋 happy day 278.🙏❤️
@@TrixRN Hope all is well with you. I appreciate all the prayers and things you share with me and all of CIY🥰🙏
Hi Elizabeth and All. Hoping Day 278 will improve as it progresses along. 🙄🙏
So clear how often we misuse the Name of the Lord. I am a culprit of this. Lord forgive me and I will do all my best not to repeat this sin. Thank you Father and all.
Fr. Mike I was also taught never to say OMG and it has stuck with me always. I thank my Mom and all who taught me that growing up.🙏
People misusing God's name has been one of my biggest pet peeves since I was little. My parents made it clear that I shouldn't do so. When I was five years old, I used to correct adults who would misuse God's name.
A huge pet peeve of mine also. Makes me wince
Amen and God Bless🙏📿🙏
I was taught as a child that Whenever I hear or read the holy name of Jesus, I bow my head❤
One shows respect for the Holy Name of God by blessing it, praising it and glorifying it. It is forbidden, therefore, to call on the Name of God to justify a crime. It is also wrong to use the Holy Name of God in any way as in blasphemy, curses, and unfaithfulness to promises made in the Name of God. Blessed be the Holy Name of Jesus 🙏
Thank you Father Mike 😊🙏🙏🙏
Thanks!
I’m praying for you Fr. Mike, thank you for praying for me 🛐
Such powerful teaching and oh so necessary ! I didn’t know or think about saying ( o my God ) as swearing for many years, I had a good friend of another Faith remind me of that fact and she always said o my stars, so that’s what I try to do, may she rest in peace ❤
Day 278. 🙏❤🙏
Wow fr Mike this has given me real food for thought and addressed areas of my indiscretion. Fr Mike you are my Mrs Anderson 🙌
Speaking his name in vain is like calling and hanging up. You wouldn't do that out of love, right?

Without giving way to fear
Love is greater.
Take the name of the Lord seriously! and refrain from saying OMG and if you take the name of our Lord in vain "Go to the Principal's office."

"Today, the Majesty of God is surrounding me. There is no way that I can help myself to prepare better. I am thoroughly enwrapped in God. My soul is being inflamed by His love. I only know that I love and am loved. That is enough for me. I am trying my best to be faithful throughout the day to the Holy Spirit and to fulfill His demands. That's me. God Bless.
Fr. Mike when I get to that point I say Oh my goodness.
My mother many years ago corrected me when I'd say "cripe" as a kid, telling me it was too close to saying Christ. She was so right!
I will never forget being told by someone years ago that Jerry Seinfield’s comedy routine was “clean” and he did not use foul language during the show. I bought got tickets and was horrified that while he didn’t used the “f” word, he took the Lord’s name in vain multiple times. I’m ashamed to say we stayed for the entire show but will never attend or watch any of his comedy shows again. Now when someone takes the Lord’s name in vain in front of me, I respond with “My Lord and Savior” or “Blessed be his holy name”. It’s still not easy though because many people have made dishonoring the name of God part of their normal vocabulary 😞❤️🙏
Blessed be God forever. Blessed be His Holy Name Blessed be Jesus Christ ,true God and true man Blessedcbe the name of Jesus Blessed be His Sacred Heart Blessed be His Most Precious Blood Blessed be Jesus in the Most Sacrament of the Altar Blessed be the Holy Spirit ,the paraclete Blessed be the great Mother of God ,Mary most holy Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception Blessed be her Glorious Assumption Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and mother Blessed be Saint Joseph her most chaste spouse Blessed be God in His Angels and in Saints .

Please pray with me.
According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)
Praying for you all.. God bless you .. ❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Hello there everyone and Father Mike I am very impressed with your GREAT teacher and SISTER (Nun
Nun 🙏🏻)it has certainly paid off
Day 278..! The Second Commandment..! I’m listening to this on Day 280… I am using the same post I used on that day. It is so relevant for today..!
‘Day 280..! The Christian Name..! Oh my..! This could not have come at a better time..! As I was opening the internet to practice the Psalm for today’s Mass there was a post by a daughter on the phone with her mother telling mom that her cancer was nearly cured. It would have been such an uplifting post, except for the fact that the girl was ‘cursing’ the Lord, as she was telling her mom the news. I could only pray for her, as I heard the Lord say, ‘forgive her Father, she knows NOT what she is doing.’ Cursing becomes such a habit, some people just do it without thinking. I prayed for her at Mass this morning’. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 With all of this said, your relating that story to us about going to the Principal’s office… hit home..! I recently went to confession… 2 days later, I thoughtlessly took the Lord’s name in vain. It hit me so hard, that I had to go to confession again..! 😔😔😔 I CANNOT WAIT to hear you again..! I am praying for all of you, especially Fr. Mike and MY priest. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless. ❤❤❤

Thank you Father Mike ❤ Love you all and God bless you!🙏❤️

2142 The second commandment prescribes respect for the Lord's name. Like the first commandment, it belongs to the virtue of religion and more particularly it governs our use of speech in sacred matters.

I just learned in recent years that to say O_ my G__ was irreverant to God. I said it so frequently in the past. Even the initial phrase. I always say have mercy when I hear someone say it. I am teaching my grandchildren not to say it. Even my 5 y.o. granddaughter will say omg when she is excited. I correct her immediately to say something else. It is used so much on tv.
Great lesson! Thank you Fr Mike!
Thankyou Fr.Mike. blessings blessings abundant blessings...I pray for you 🙏..amen PTL 🙏
Whenever I hear someone say, "Oh my God," I'll follow it with, "Blessed be His holy name." As a teacher, I would hear the students use God's name in vain often. I approached it in various ways to make them aware of what they were saying. One way was to follow, "Oh my God," with, "Where? He did say He was coming back." :). A Christian comedian once said, "No one ever says, 'Oh my Buddha."
Praise be to God our Almighty Father, the Son our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit❣️
Thank you so much Fr. Mike and Ascension. My continued prayers for all, God Bless 🙏🏻
Thank you Father. I learned something today that I did not know
Years ago I watched your "Why is Taking the Lord's name in Vain Wrong?" and your "Who Do Spend Time With" regarding boundaries and taking into consideration who we surround ourselves with because we can become the 5 people we hang around. Hopefully, I'm remembering correctly!
I wasn't paying attention to Ascension Presents channel but those were two videos I'd listen to, and would resonate with me similar to a with a newly found video of yours that I discovered from a Catechism in a Year commenter here: "If I'm Suffering, Is it Better to Never Have Been Born?"
God bless you, Fr. Mike and everyone here! Hope you have a light-filled hopeful day!
Thank-you Father Mike for this teaching! I knew wasn't good to use OMG but that it actually is breaking the 2nd commandment and it is very commonplace to hear it spoken frequently
Thank you Father.
And of course the principle of holding God’s name holy, as well!

" Holy God We Praise Thy Name! "
Thank you Fr Mike, God bless you!
To share your name with someone is to give them a certain kind of power over you, as you then become vulnerable to them. God has revealed himself to us in the name of Jesus, which is his essence, his presence, and his power. Hence, it is sacred. We should have fear and awe i❤n proclaiming his name as if we are before the Lord himself. So we must not become accustomed to holy things/names to treat them as common things/names.
Our prayer must be honest in calling out to God for help without using words of reproach, defiance, hatred or ill-will against God as He knows everything and He is good. 👍❤
DaY 278 ❤❤❤
Amen ❤❤❤
Praise to you God and Jesus Christ🙏❤🕊😇

I went to see Agatha Christie's mystery "A Haunting in Venice" because I thought it would be a clean drama. WARNING: A character uses Christ's holy Name in vain twice. 😢 We're sorry, Lord. IN NOMINE PATRIS ET FILII ET SPIRITUS SANCTI. +AMEN

Most precious blood of Jesus Christ save us and the whole world❤
For the past 40 or so years, whenever I hear, or see posted, someone unnecessarily using "God" or "Jesus", I always gently say, (or post) "Excuse me, but did you know that's blasphemy?" Usually, if in person, the blasphemer apologizes. If they do, I tell them, with a smile, not to apologize to me, but to God. I hardly ever hear anyone blaspheme around me anymore.
It’s one thing, when you don’t know the lord.
I grew up in a secular family, although because a friend of my mother was a believing Catholic I was baptized and first communion. But never went to church. I had to go through my young life without any sense of the almighty. Until I majored in my twenties did I began to change my mind. This time as a Protestant of course. It was to age 31 that I began to remember my moments in Mass and began returning to his Church. When I reverted I discovered I needed to be confirmed. This with teenagers, which i did. I finally could take the body and blood of our Lord.
Thank you Fr Mike. It’s such a bad habit. I’m trying to get my family to stop.
I feel when I say Omg that I’m asking God to help me never think it was a sin to say that 😂

Have you ever considered listening to Saint Faustina’s Diary in a year and/or EWTN Mother Angelica’s Classics to add to your Catholic learning?
Oh my goodness so much life guidance in conjunction with Father Mike’s Bible and Catechism in a Year!
I repent of saying "Oh my g***, G* D*it" and saying the name of Jesus when I am upset! I am so sorry, God. Please forgive me and cover me with the blood of Jesus. I hated hearing my name when I was in trouble as a child. Even now as an adult I cringe when someone says my name in a slightly disdainful way. We don't like it and God must not like it. Forgive us, God! 😭😭😭
Ave Maria
Pop culture has truly made it look cool to use the Holy name as a curse word. In fact, it's not cool, but because we see so many do it, we also do not realize the seriousness of it. I hope the world gets more people like Mrs. Anderson and Sister Barbara who guide children to do the right thing. The power and privilege of names are valid points. When was the last time you addressed a person of authority by their first name? We can't unless we were their school friends. God and Jesus Christ both have given us this privilege to call them in prayers to make the prayers and the connection more personal and strong. The examples of the VooDoo and the exorcism show the effect names can have on our spirit. Thus, taking God's name in vain is a serious sin with consequences seen in the future, even if not now. Friendliness or commonality of God and Jesus' name makes us lose the awe and fear for Them. It should be like how we respect and love our parents or grandparents, which makes us never call them by their first names or say their names in place of a curse word. I suggest simply saying, "Oh No!" "Oh my goodness!" when starting to recover from this sinful habit and then eventually, not saying anything at all because by that time, your patience and wisdom will be much more. The example of Job's situation is perfect because we all have our own life phases like Job's. That's our test, and we must pass it by staying calm, believing in God's promises, and staying faithful to Him. Honest and respectful prayers should be like a deep talk with a loved one near a fireplace where we tell everything to God and leave nothing inside our mind so that when God blesses us in the due season, He also never leaves no stone unturned for us (as always, because He is the merciful and graceful God). Thank you for this important analysis, Fr. Mike and Team Ascension. I am praying for you and for the fellow listeners. God bless
Beautiful reflection. I feel like Job at the moment, but like Job I trust in God that these things one day will pass🙏

I AM NOT VULNERABLE TO YOU.
So as society or individuals declaring divorce good they clearly go against this commandment. They that encourage divorce would be an offense against God by calling what He called together as His image to be lived out they then say we dont have to obey to its 3 ends. Even the couple themselves should not speak against the vows they made before God in giving themselves to each other in Him.

If the church doesn’t speak out and take action against abortion and sins of the flesh then it is blaspheming God’s name
The etymology of the word “gosh” says it comes from the word God. In the 1920s “jeez” was the shortened word for Jesus.
I so regret my prior experience.
Principal…😊
I recently was told by a priest, in confession, that saying “Oh my --“ is not a mortal sin. But it is and needs to be confessed, even if said on accident. Correct?
What Sister Barbara Ann will do when she hears Father Mike says oh my gosh ?
Hi, I have a question for Catechism Answers: Is it less grave to say the name "God" casually since it's a generic name for a supreme being or deity and not a name that the One true God revealed of Himself (like Yahweh or Jesus). Like isn't "God" less personal and specific to say? I grew up very aware that taking Jesus' name in vain was a sin against the second commandment but not so much with saying "Oh my God". Thoughts?
I never felt like I was saying something to offend him
Well, now you know He was offended.
So maybe we shouldn't have "In God we trust" on our money.
That's not a vain or irreverent use of God's holy Name.
