Nashville Songwriters / Mia Morris vlog #19 - Nashville Artist, Songwriter, Multi-instrumentalist
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 бер 2020
- I’m beginning to get some understanding of the job and business of Nashville songwriting. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve played or written with 14 songwriters that have had hundreds of their songs recorded and somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 number one hit songs. (I didn't count the 24 #1's that Rich Redmond has been a part of with Jason Aldean). It’s a bit strange to wrap your head around the fact that there are professional songwriters, especially if you’re like me and grew up on mostly rock bands that put out music that they wrote themselves but it’s a really big deal in Nashville. For a good example of what I’m talking about, even in rock music, check out a few of a very long list of songs that Desmond Child was a co-writer on: You Give Love A Bad Name, Bad Medicine, I Hate Myself For loving You, Living On A Prayer, Dude Looks Like A Lady.. it goes on and on.
I completely understand and appreciate the fact that the creative process of writing is where everything starts in music and I intend to be a part of it. Here are a couple of fun facts that I’ve learned about songwriters that aren’t really in the vlog. - Some of them sing really bad and can only play their instrument enough to make chords. - Some of them are incredible players and singers and for whatever reason, they didn’t make it as an artist but got to make songs for decades that the world knows. - Most of them look like everyone else and live very normal lives besides what they do for work during the day.
The other sections of this vlog show a Loud Jamz gig that I was a part of on bass and an afternoon gig down at Blake Shelton's club on Broadway. On the walk to the Broadway gig, I talk a little about the difference between what most tourists see and think of as the Nashville music scene and what I’m learning about the Music Row and songwriter music scene. They have less to do with each other than many people think. I’m happy that I get to be part of both.
I’m 15 years old and I want to be a professional musician when I grow up. I try to play lots of instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend a lot of my time writing and recording. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 5 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing music, keep loving it and keep getting better.

Thanks for another episode of “Mia’s Musical Mystery Tour,” Mia. 😁...I gotta say I would never know Nashville if you hadn’t taken me behind the scenes. I can see why you love it, its a musical haven for musicians, but I’m sure it’s competitive too. It’s all great experience either way. Sounds like you were playing with Janis Joplin in one of your sets Mia ! She’s got great pipes as they say. Hope your well as your family. You and dad are a great duo. Till the next episode of “ Mia’s Musical Mystery Tour.”
you're right on - this town either inspires musicians to get really good, or ends their dream.
Mia Morris somehow I think you’ll be in the music business one way or another, regardless if the powers that be give you a big platform or not. You’re too talented but mostly it’s in your heart and soul, which means you will create music no matter what.
Thanks for the excellent upload Mia. You are really rubbing elbows with some heavy players. Nice to see you behind the wheel. Mia take care and stay well, we all love you! ❤❤❤
thanks Jeff - be well :)
This is really cool Mia. As far as I'm concerned you' be already made it. For your age, when girls your age are obsessed with boys, you have matured way, way beyond the kid stuff. You are a pro musician and there are thousands of older songwriters and musicians who haven't accomplished what you have. You are in the right place at the right time. Keep going!
Very much agreed.
Although we keep moving forward, whether it’s with the same pursuit, to further refine your skills and techniques, or to take on a completely new interest, to once again attain the same level of mastery to conquer yet another interest.
Your entire life is in front of you. To live a good, full life, you may want to set yourself up to be well rounded. To be able to show for mastery of a completely different interest in life will show of a history for yourself to others. Proving more than you have mastered percussion. It shows which anything you apply yourself to, you then are able to fully attain mastery of the subject. This makes you “ultra-valuable” in life. And, that is a history you have made for yourself, and an investment you have made in yourself that will pay dividends.
It is nice to watch the progression of talent, professionalism and direction of an upcoming lifelong talent no matter where you choose to go in life.
That's certainly my plan - things are gonna be weird around here for awhile but I'm still gonna write and record full steam.
That's pretty deep to consider since I mostly feel like music is my one trick but I will say I have figured out that you can learn to do anything that you're willing to put the work into. Thanks for the encouragement and solid advice.
@@miamorrismusic Anytime, we are all very proud of you and cheering for you.
thanks for another good video Mia, it does so well to play with good musicians and excellent voices :) GV Mia and protect yourself 🥁👍👻

Awesome to see you are so in demand by big names in the business - it had to come!
You have taken great steps in your climb in the music industry, and in terms of the old apprenticeship system, I'd certainly place you at the Journeyman phase. Soon you will have your first independent hit, and become a master craftsman, and that could happen any time!
I hope your gigging isn't too badly affected by the difficult times, and that you and your loved ones stay safe.
You are better placed than many to work online and keep busy even if actual gigs get restricted, so be prepared for it.
Be careful not to act as a carrier and put the older generation at risk. Lack of adequate testing in both our countries means that you could be infected and not even know it.
Some of us (I'm on 4 months quarantine, for example) are relying on great online content like yours to keep us sane in the coming months.
Stay safe, and stay busy, much love from the UK.
Hey Phil. We are taking the social distancing seriously in our family now. I hope you stay healthy and entertained. All my live shows are cancelled at this point but I spend the bulk of my time writing and recording now so I can do that. Who knows when or if school will be happening next..
Rich is a real hoot and a monster groove drummer, and you were locked in tight with him. Proud of you! 👌♥️
He's a great energy even when he's not playing - just a fun dude.
Mia, you are right where you should be...right up there on stage alongside some incredible talent!!!
Be careful and stay safe during these trying times. I'll being looking forward to your next video...you are already going places! Great work on the bass!!👍👍

Our little girl is driving, lol!! Killin' it once again on bass! And all those great songwriters! That's how you do it. You're on your way to being in the #2 Nashville music business (on YOUR list, which is #1, of course). So happy for you! Go Mia!!! 🤘🤘💖💖🔥🔥
Very nice - I like that you understand that really is my goal. I'll work anywhere I can if it comes to that but I'd really like a spot in the real game.
@@miamorrismusic You're gonna make it there. No doubt in my mind. You just won't settle for anything less and that's why you will. RESPECT. ✌🙌
Eventually this day had to come. Mia is driving! Ha ha ha ha. Ten and Two!!!!
not quite on my own - yet..

And lastly, as long as you get those chills, you'll always have what you need to succeed. I have to believe all the greats still get those same chills 🤙
I love that song and couldn't believe it when I went back to look back at the footage :) the chills are pure magic to for me.

I love your update videos Mia. The only thing I enjoy more is a Mia Morris original song. 😁 You gonna treat us to some new music videos anytime soon?
man, I've got the songs.. I've been putting off shooting vids but I'm gonna get on it in-between writes in the next couple of weeks.
Mia I have following you for awhile and I’m so excited for your growth and success. Keep on following that dream. Hope to see you in person one day soon.
I hope I get to play enough to make that doable - thanks.
As much as we all enjoy the video content (you crushed it on bass), I also greatly appreciate your written content. We can learn about some of the current ins and outs of the music biz in Nashville basically right along with you, as you experience them. I find that hugely entertaining and aspiring writers and players would be well served to pay attention to what you provide through your well-written words here. I appreciate your insight. Great job, Mia.
I really appreciate that David. I find this stuff absolutely fascinating so i'm not a very good judge of what most people would find interesting. :)
@@miamorrismusic Your instincts and/or intuition seems good so far. You are still learning to trust them. Some mistakes may be made along the way. Keep learning. Trust, then verify. Men call it 'gut instinct'. Women call it 'women's intuition'. Call it what you will. Believe 'it' always has your best interests at heart. Trust it. That philosophy hasn't let me down yet. You'll be fine.
It was great set of performances, Mia! However, during our current Covid-19, please do not shake, high-five or touch another person too closely. The Corona *elbow shake* is about as far as you want to congratulate a great performance. Take this time seriously until this gets beyond us...
Awesome. You have a reality but most young people dream about.
thanks - I hope I can keep it going :)
Most everything live has been cancelled here in Columbus, Ohio.
And biblical rain. Thanks for a little sunshine❤🎵😂
heheh - that's a funny rain reference, thanks for the smile
Awesome...that was so cool
thanks for watching.
High Road Easy is a killer tune. I'm sure Sass Jordan would approve of that cover and Michael Klooster was crushing it on that keyboard. Nice tone to it, sounded like an old B3..
he uses those old organ sounds all over the Smash Mouth hits.. very cool.
Great job as always Mia. Playing Gigs and Missing School should be your motto.
can't do either for a bit, looks like...
@@miamorrismusic Yeah, were all stuck at home. At least Frisco will be happy to have you there. You can always do more drum videos. I hope you and your family are safe and healthy.
MiaMia Morris, I've stopped making and keeping detailed notes about anything (it's just too hard in these days) just as I'm sure your freedom to work more, harder, and longer days has caused you to do just that. Who's going to stop you? But I do continue to notice things passively in my rambling, stumbling, and often inquisitive way. It is possible, even probable, that I erred in my search for the ancestors of the Morris clan. I found a map that shows the distribution of the family Morris clan perhaps 100 years ago. This clan shows up in dense habitations around a large portion of Wales. It didn't show Scotland or Ireland. A much older map that includes France, Bretagne, Provence, Western Germany, North Savoie, and les Alpes Maritimes, etc., appears to show that the tribe liked to be near water. One group was in a large group in Calais, along the coast on both sides, and in a line that ended in Paris. Those at Cap Gris Nez (Cape Grey Nose) could stand on the shore of the channel and wave to their cousins waving back from the white cliffs of Dover. Some were considered Flemish and this makes me believe that by 1066 when they took part in the conquest they were deeply allied with the Dutch, Flemish, Germans in the border country, Savoyards from northeast France/Germany, and all the many small contributors. The Welsh are a quiet people. Who among us can say we are not Welsh? I didn't want to have to say this but I think we are absolutely related - at some point our tribes clashed and formed a significant line. However, what often seems to be highly probable actually end up being my self-delusion. But I wouldn't bet a lot of money against it. Twelve to 1500 years ago when our ancestors did live there the population was small but moved around a lot. It's an unpredictable world!
This is amazing you are so awesome and talented 💜❤️💙🎤🎸🎼💗✌🏻
:) hope you're staying healthy
Mia Morris I am thank you and I hope you are too 🙏🏻🤗
From your commentary, Mia, and from what I hear and see there must be enough cross pollination among musicians that live in, or pass through, Nashville so that y'all can claim a musical and/or personal association with every musician working in the 'western world' today, or in a much larger global space. That's super chill!
Increíble sos toda una talentosa
I love it you rock Mia

I think you can drop this line from your bio above:
I’m 15 years old and I want to be a professional musician when I grow up.
Agreed ;-)
I appreciate that.. I want to stay one then, which could be even tougher.
@@miamorrismusic Don't misunderstand. I mean you're no longer 15 and in my opinion, already a young professional.

Hey Mia, nice to see ya. Country music really isn't my thing so... I really enjoyed the second part, I think that signer could do a decent job of covering Janis Joplin's songs, what a voice. I've been looking at many of your past videos and waiting for an excuse to comment on your bass playing. It's really your second-best instrument, I'd even say by a small margin to your drum playing. Impressive how you can sing while playing it, I sure can't... Careful with crowds and human contacts these days, you know why... Nice end "freeze-frame" hahaha. And you are right, parking between the lines is definitely a "win". Lastly, hail to the squirrel ! (sorry dad)
you're right on, I've heard her do Joplin and it's sic. I really enjoy bass and take any excuse I can find to do shows on it - thanks and stay well!
