  • Kettle Joe Modifications - How to Remove Moisture from your Thermometer
    I have made some modifications to the Kamado Joe Kettle Joe to make it more efficient where it leaks smoke. We will add a gasket, gasket sealer and show you how to remove moisture from your thermometer.

    Awesome awesome video! I just got a kettle Joe and love it, but noticed when the top vent is off I can see light when the grill is closed. Have a gasket on its way now.

      @@BartlowsBBQ the reason I found this video is because it was taking forever to snuff out coals after closing all air sources off, somehow air was still getting into the grill. After looking around the inside from the top, it's quite of bit of space for the air to get through. 👍🏼

      @@BartlowsBBQ so I added the gasket, it still leaks in the front right section only slightly. However I'm able to regulate temps and shut down the grill better now. I just have a problem with screws and nuts coming loose as well as the ash trap always getting stuck. Is there some kind of aftermarket piece that's better than the one shipped with the kettle Joe?

    • @BartlowsBBQ
      @BartlowsBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      @@MrEmpirestate714 I got the pre-production model. I was hoping the screws and bolts would be better. I ended up finding some at hardware store to replace. I haven't fold a good solution on the ash drawer but wish KJ would make one like the classic. I did test my classic ash drawer fits in kettle but handle sticks out.

    Good job! I would think that you could cut off a small piece of that gasket material and poke the thermometer stem through it to seal the leak around the stem (you might have to start the hole with an ice pick or knife.) Were you covering that casserole dish to protect the thermometer from the direct burner heat? Leaving it cracked open would allow the steam to more easily escape from the dish. A hand held hair dryer might work too.

    • @BartlowsBBQ
      @BartlowsBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much. What a great suggestion and idea on gasket material for thermometer. Yeah, my main thought was i didn't want to have direct heat from burner on thermometer just as an extra layer of protection. I could see a hair dryer potentially working too. I appreciate you watching and sharing!

      The Kettle Joe is a great option editor the price. Plus, I have created great results doing low n slow & hot & fast. The fire board will be a nice compliment too.

    Great video!
    I just bought one of these grills and the felt will be one of the first things I will be installing before any cooks. How well is the gasket working for you? Also, curious to how long does it take for the coals to stop burning once you close all vents at top and bottom when compared to the other kamado Joes.

    • @BartlowsBBQ
      @BartlowsBBQ  Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much and good questions. Being a Kettle it takes a bit longer. I'm not sure I have observed the time it takes ti snuff out. I just shut it down and walk away. As long as vents are closed you won't have issues. Overall, Kettle Joe is a fun & versatile grill. It's main weakness is leaking from gaskets and this fix helps but doesn't completely eliminate it.

      @@BartlowsBBQ Thanks for your input. Be good to know how long it will take to cool down so I know how soon after I can put the bbq cover back on. I will have it on a deck but there is no cover to protect it from rain. Anyway, if you do find out, let me know! thanks. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive!

    Can one use a small piece of the heat gasket material to prevent smoke leakage at the temperature gage?

      I have the same issue. I just tried my ash pan from my classic 2 and it fits perfect except the handle sticks out. But, I use kick ash basket on my other joe's and will probably just get one for the kettle joe. So much easier for clean up!
