I just baught the season 2 pass and I wanted to ask , I'm doing my first play through this game and I just came out of the tavern in act one , do you think I should play the lord of nothing dlc before the main. Campaign since it then ties into act 5?
People who hated on Ashes were power gamers and meta nerds. Like you cant build a meta build with all its exacting strats so they got angry at it. Thats where the hate came from.
Wont make much difference either way, and I believe the Mythic edition + season pass 2 gets everything atm. Dont think theyve released like a 'definitive' version yet

Little correction about Treasure of the Midnight Isle. It doesn't unlock a dungeon in act 5, the unlock of the dungeon is staggered. Part 1 is Act 3, Part 2 is Act 4 and Part 3 is Act 5. You can complete it in one go in Act 5, however you can also do it pieces (which I prefer, I get bored by the end of a set of islands).
Yeah the only thing is I believe a lot of people miss the fact that you need to spend X days in the different acts before it unlocks which is probably why a lot of people misses when it's unlocked. You need to sleep/pass 18 days in act 3 to unlock part 1, no sleep/pass of days required in act 4 for part 2 but for part 3 you need to sleep/pass 4 days in act 5. No clue why they did this and there is no explanation or information given about this in game from what I remember.

I loved 'Through the Ashes'. The possibilities to play it through. The NPC you can save, all with their own little stories. No fights which you can just bruteforce through. Making use with the little loot you get. The rush, when I got a masterwork greatsword, which is almost a throw away item in the maingame. But you celebrate every little victory. Amazing DLC.
I have played this game extensively, so I don't really need such a guide, yet I am always excited when you post anything on WotR and am going to watch them all nonetheless!

I will note that the Treasure of the Midnight Isles becomes available in Act 3 and continues in Act 4, with the finish in Act 5. I think the wording in the video might have been a little vague. Otherwise, great video as always. Recently finished my 3rd playthrough, as well as playing through the newly released DLC. Love the love the game is getting from so many people now.
I will add that to access it in Act 3 and 5 you have to go to the Murky Grotto. To access it in Act 4, you have to go to the Nondescript Pier in the first area of the city. I am not sure if you can do all 3 phases of the DLC in Act 5, but I strongly recommend doing them in their respective Acts. This splits up the dungeon crawling into smaller segments throughout the game and makes the tedium more managable, if you are not a fan of just fighting enemies for hours straight.
I'll probably never end up actually playing Inevitable Excess but I'm sure I technically have more hours in it than the main game if you include the character creator. Because it lets you make a max level character from scratch, you can just walk outside, long rest, take some gear from your companions and fight the demons up the hill to see how all of your build's mechanics interact. Totally worth.
I wish more of the dlc were integrated in the main campaign and not being stand alone campaigns. If every dlc has subclasses, a companion or expansion of current companions and dungeon/quest I would have gotten them all.
Through the Ashes is definelty my least favorite of the DLC. After having played and run a number of Pathfinder 1e and D&D 5e campaigns, most of which rarely got past level 4, I kind of see the low level experience, (mechanically and not story-wise), as just the work you have to put in to get to more interesting abilities & gameplay. Through the Ashes just feels like all work to me. That said, I do view it more favorably as a complete story experience with Lord of Nothing.
Treasures of the Midnight Isles is far and away my favorite of the bunch. I loved the same roguelite DLC for Kingmaker which was still very rudimentary and basic but probably accounted for half of my playtime in that game. And this one just improved it on all levels. I just love that I get to build all of my characters for the standalone playthroughs. Reminds me of Icewind Dale. And I get to fully experience all of those more eccentric builds that I would otherwise never try. Because when I replay the main campaign I always get overwhelmed by all my choices since I have to nail myself down on one single class and build that I will end up married to for 140 hours, and that then often leads to me restarting somewhere in act I because this build I picked isn't quite what I expected. Having 5 characters to build is so much more enjoyable to me and locks me in neatly. I did fun off the cuff things like have a party of all-Dhampirs with undead animal companions that could use harm spells to heal. Or having 5 gnomes/halflings to have a party of under 4 foot tall. And this mode is pretty much infinitely replayable too.

You were the one who got me into this game, stumbled upon a video you made about pathfinder and it was the first video of yours i have ever seen, thanks to you I'm over a hundred hours in the game, probably in my top 3 favorite games of all time, and you became my favorite UA-camr as well!
Through the Ashes is easily my favorite Owlcat DLC. It pulled off the underpowered, resource-constrained, survival-oriented CRPG better than I’ve ever seen it done. It was incredibly balanced and I wish there was a full length game with that same vibe.
Through the Ashes wasn't bad at all - I quite enjoyed it... after I decided I need to replay first few hours cause character I made to be more rp-y needs to change into something more op to survive. I might actually replay Through the Ashes/Lord of Nothing after my current playthrough just to make next big playthrough harder - all the icecreams for the icecream god :D
So I am a huge fan of the Toy box mod for this game because I love gestalting my characters an companions I am doing a Aeon build right know where I am gestalted Magic Deceiver/Monk but one character I am always having a problem with a second class is Daeron what would par well with his Oracle class? (this is how I choose to play the game I increase the difficulty to compensate for the power of Gestalted characters)
Another through the ashes enjoyer, by far my favortie dlc. As much as i enjoy the power fantasy of the base game ive always been a bigger fan of lower fantasy high lethality games. My favorite tabletop sessions ive ever played were in Warhammer Fantasy RPG and the prompt was you are all peasants of some sort(have to pick a t1 peasant profession like farmer) and on the way back from market one day you were ransacked and pulled into skaven infested sewers, while transporting you the skaven were killed by something bigger, your goal survive and escape.
Only played Through the Ashes and i loved it. Got bored with Inevitable excess and didn't finish it but i only finished the game once. I always get annoyed in the 4th act.
1. Last Sarkorians - Solid content, nice companion, well-designed quests 2. Lord of Nothing - Interesting campaign although a bit low-powered 3. Dance of Masks - Very short, too much recycled content 4. Midnight Isles - Useful but not captivating enough, levelling up is too slow 5. Inevitable Excess - Interesting but too late to be interesting ... 999. Through the Ashes - Horrible, tedious, completely wrong game for this kind of gameplay
Found this channel from the Pathfinder content and have loved seeing it achieve greater success since. I'll probably be waiting a bit to replay WOTR with all of the DLC because I burnt myself out on the game a bit with 3 full playthroughs (rookie numbers for Mort I know). But I'll always love it. The Owlcat games were the CRPGs I had been craving since NWN2.
Off topic but I'd love to see a video someday on the Game of Thrones RPG from 2012 by Cyanide Studio! It's got a very interesting narrative and from a gameplay standpoint I found it reminiscent of Dragon Age Origins. It's not a great game by any means but if you're into A Song of Ice and Fire and/or Game of Thrones it's absolutely worth checking out

i really hope they could make the roguelike part more huge than it is now. Imagine having building an entire party, facing enemy that's is random generated everytime. The trial and error would be so addicting.
Through the Ashes absolutely deserves more praise, and especially when it was released, was the perfect palate cleanser before yet another mythic-powered run through main campaign.
Midnight Isles feels like such a grind of repetitive, pointless fights on the main story. Cool bosses though. And I definitely would say Owlcat did a good job of making a solid set of DLC.
Only thing I don't like of some of these DLC that are played with the vanilla game characters is that they unbalance the main campaign. Doing all DLC easily takes you a few levels up the expected level in the campaign, which has a massive impact in difficulty. So I suggest to use mods. to set experience multiplier to x0 when you are playing them.
I wish bg 3 went to level 20 like pathfinder. I don't get the same power fantasy like I do with wotr. In wotr I start off weak often times I run and hide behind allies but towards the rend of the game I'm a walking force of destruction casting chain lightning and fireballs. Bg3 has the problem of cutting you off just as you were about to reach the fun stuff and you can forget about trying to cross classes unless you follow a guide and play one way. Sure bg3 is king when it comes to choices and replayability but it misses out on the funniest part of the end game and that's being walking death. Maybe I'm exaggerating but I just replayed wotr and my sorceress was just throwing around high level spells like there was no tomorrow on the highest difficulty. I turn on bg3 and I'm like where is the rest of my spell book? I like both games though
I bought the base game, and I'm wondering if I should buy the mythic edition or just wait for the definitive edition because there are so many DLCs and many says the base game is good enough, but I'm still preoccupied in pathfinder kingmaker, so while I'm at it, I think I should wait for the definitive edition because I'd like to finish the first game.
Excellent ranking! Really disliked inevitable excess - couldn't even finish it. Guess there is a reason to though! Almost want to put Treasure Isles to the side though cause I love love testing builds!
The bigest issue i have with through the ashes is the artificial dificulty brought by most weapons given being broken and borderline useless. Without that is still dificult and requires carefulness, but feels less like bashing your head agaist a wall
MI I hate - the main story MI is great and noth that grindy (other then act 3) Also main story MI doesn't have procedural generated maps. But the solo MI is a grind fest, and (not sure if they fixed it) random generated maps use to be super buggy.
I need to get started again, probably an azata playthrough as I did lich my first try. Sadly my save data was lost before finishing but I got mostly through the game but hadnt gotten the ending yet @_@ CRPGs are rare mood for me sadly due to their length :p
I also love through the ashes. the underdog nature and focus on using skills instead of just fighting makes it a very different and satisfying experience to the main game.
Shame they never expanded on the Crusade Army mode, was hoping for stand-alone scenario for that gameplay so you figure it out without having to constantly have to switch back and forth between that and the main game.

I'd argue about midnight aisle since it starts in act 3 and you get a phase of the expansion over 3 acts you can get some nice magical items through it, including mask that gives +6 chr/wis in act 3
Yeah through the ashes was the best only problem was its length. its follow up lord of nothing was good but i didnt finish it got frustrated and left in the negative energy or shadow plane. I havent played dance of masks because you got to complete the game to see it and i always get destracted from the game and make a new character before it happens. Treasure of the midnight isles would be my favorite but it needs more variety. It feels like a build test for the game rather than trying to be a great dungeon crawl.

Is Inevitable Excess worth if you dont really care about the buff? Is the connection between Through the Ashes and Lord of Nothing strong? Are they just NPCS or playable in the campaign and do they connect story wise or just mechanically. Otherwise only season pass 2 sounds interesting imo.
What are you thoughts about a DEMON mythic path playthrough now that the final DLC is here and the game is done. Is it worth it overall or will i be disappointed compared to the ANGLE mythic path? I'm keen to see how the game changes with an evil playthrough but realistically if it's 60 hours to get 30m of unique events that'll be a huge drag
I think the only one thats a bit of a let down atm is Gold Dragon but rumor says they still plan on a last free update to fix that. So yeah I think its worth it
I only bought the dance of Masks dlc so far for the extra content with your companions. The last Sarkosian could be interesting but I have my doubts that this Ulric is well integrated into the base game. Does he have a lot of back and forth with your other companions? I wasn't that impressed with the extra companion dlc in Kingmaker. Anyway, thanks for this video 🙂.

Is this game longer than bg3? You say 5/6 acts but I don’t know how that compares to act length in bg3. Seems like a massive game. I have it and played a couple hours but it’s hard to get into
Oh thank you for this. I had been thinking of going back to Wrath now that all the DLC was out, and it's nice to know the best timing for everything. I'm also going to be curious how Through the Ashes stacks up to Varnhold's Lot in difficulty since it sounds like it has similar scarcity mechanics. (As while I loved the story in that DLC--especially Maegar's incredibly adorable romance--the combat was brutal enough due to the lower item availability that it was a serious challenge to beat.)
Everything that affects the main story can for the most part be enjoyed with your current playthrough. Last Sarkorians for instance can all be done in Act 5 if you want
I see there are the DLCs and season passes. Do you need to buy both? Looks like maybe you just need season pass 1 and 2 and that world get you all the content. Or is there an advantage buying them individually?
To clarify in case somebody needs it: Season Pass 1 would be: Excess, Ashes, Treasure (ranked last, second to last and first) Season Pass 2 would be the other three. This leads to 4 reasonable purchasing options: a) Stingy Edition: Only the base game (12$/€) b) Consensus Edition: Base game + Season Pass 2 (29.40 Eurodollars; all the well-reviewed stuff) c) Mortym Super Fan Edition: Base game + SP2 + Ashes (34.60 Currencies; Mortym's favorite DLCs) d) Complete Edition: Base game + SP1 + SP2 (38.10 not-pounds; slightly more expensive, only adds stuff almost everyone hates) Personally, I went with option b. If I ever get bored with that, I could always add SP1 later.
Paizo is a US company who named their monthly ttrpg dungeon magazine Pathfinder Adventure Path in 2007, after losing the license to publish D&D magazines, because Pathfinder means a person who scouts ahead to show others the path like say scouting a dungeon. This is before officially publishing Pathfinder 1e in 2009. So no, it is not.

I think Through the Ashes was my favaurite bit of the whole game, gritty high-stakes from the an ordinary person's perspective.
I loved 'Through the Ashes' too. Nice to get a different perspective on the attack on Kenabres.

Yep, it does. The midnight fane's belt gets upgraded to the somewhat powerful +8 and increased crit range belt if you do.

Helpful stuff, even though I need to get around to playing Kingmaker first. I know the first game isn't as hot of a topic, but I'd watch a similar video for its DLC.

I’m shocked people didn’t like through the ashes. It’s so well written and a great contrast to the main story characters.
i really hope they could make the roguelike part more huge than it is now. Imagine having building an entire party, facing enemy that's is random generated everytime. The trial and error would be so addicting.
Through the Ashes absolutely deserves more praise, and especially when it was released, was the perfect palate cleanser before yet another mythic-powered run through main campaign.
Midnight Isles feels like such a grind of repetitive, pointless fights on the main story. Cool bosses though. And I definitely would say Owlcat did a good job of making a solid set of DLC.
Only thing I don't like of some of these DLC that are played with the vanilla game characters is that they unbalance the main campaign. Doing all DLC easily takes you a few levels up the expected level in the campaign, which has a massive impact in difficulty. So I suggest to use mods. to set experience multiplier to x0 when you are playing them.
I wish bg 3 went to level 20 like pathfinder. I don't get the same power fantasy like I do with wotr. In wotr I start off weak often times I run and hide behind allies but towards the rend of the game I'm a walking force of destruction casting chain lightning and fireballs. Bg3 has the problem of cutting you off just as you were about to reach the fun stuff and you can forget about trying to cross classes unless you follow a guide and play one way. Sure bg3 is king when it comes to choices and replayability but it misses out on the funniest part of the end game and that's being walking death. Maybe I'm exaggerating but I just replayed wotr and my sorceress was just throwing around high level spells like there was no tomorrow on the highest difficulty. I turn on bg3 and I'm like where is the rest of my spell book?

I bought the base game, and I'm wondering if I should buy the mythic edition or just wait for the definitive edition because there are so many DLCs and many says the base game is good enough, but I'm still preoccupied in pathfinder kingmaker, so while I'm at it, I think I should wait for the definitive edition because I'd like to finish the first game.
Excellent ranking! Really disliked inevitable excess - couldn't even finish it. Guess there is a reason to though! Almost want to put Treasure Isles to the side though cause I love love testing builds!
Might be the best RPG ever. The turn based / real time combat button changed everything for me
Pretty much the same ranking for me, except swapping Dance and Sarkorians. I really like the NPC
The bigest issue i have with through the ashes is the artificial dificulty brought by most weapons given being broken and borderline useless. Without that is still dificult and requires carefulness, but feels less like bashing your head agaist a wall

MI I hate - the main story MI is great and noth that grindy (other then act 3) Also main story MI doesn't have procedural generated maps. But the solo MI is a grind fest, and (not sure if they fixed it) random generated maps use to be super buggy.
I need to get started again, probably an azata playthrough as I did lich my first try. Sadly my save data was lost before finishing but I got mostly through the game but hadnt gotten the ending yet @_@ CRPGs are rare mood for me sadly due to their length :p

I also love through the ashes. the underdog nature and focus on using skills instead of just fighting makes it a very different and satisfying experience to the main game.
Shame they never expanded on the Crusade Army mode, was hoping for stand-alone scenario for that gameplay so you figure it out without having to constantly have to switch back and forth between that and the main game.

I use Inevitable excess as a build planner for wotr. You can plan out and see how your toon will look like at lvl20 and mythic 10 😂
I wonder if another RPG developer will ever release a toolset like the one we got for Neverwinter Nights 1. I'd love to see what kind of modules creatives could come up with if they had easy access to everything they needed from WotR.

I really love midnight isles since it can be a short rogue-like run and see if my builds are working... And that's why it is a short run :D
Lord of nothing story wise was ok but balancing wise for unfair play it wasn't tested properly. It was ridiculous.
I'd argue about midnight aisle since it starts in act 3 and you get a phase of the expansion over 3 acts you can get some nice magical items through it, including mask that gives +6 chr/wis in act 3
you and i enjoyed Through the Ashes for the exact same reasons; I *loved* it!

Yeah through the ashes was the best only problem was its length. its follow up lord of nothing was good but i didnt finish it got frustrated and left in the negative energy or shadow plane. I havent played dance of masks because you got to complete the game to see it and i always get destracted from the game and make a new character before it happens. Treasure of the midnight isles would be my favorite but it needs more variety. It feels like a build test for the game rather than trying to be a great dungeon crawl.

Inevitale excess has a good concept - sadly the execution isn't nearly as good.
we will see if this changes with rouge trader but owl cat does not have a good track record with dlc comapred to say bioware, obsidean and cdpr.
Is Inevitable Excess worth if you dont really care about the buff? Is the connection between Through the Ashes and Lord of Nothing strong? Are they just NPCS or playable in the campaign and do they connect story wise or just mechanically. Otherwise only season pass 2 sounds interesting imo.
IE depends on you really, its the most stand alone of all of these though. TtA and LoN do connect together very well yeah
What are you thoughts about a DEMON mythic path playthrough now that the final DLC is here and the game is done. Is it worth it overall or will i be disappointed compared to the ANGLE mythic path? I'm keen to see how the game changes with an evil playthrough but realistically if it's 60 hours to get 30m of unique events that'll be a huge drag
I think the only one thats a bit of a let down atm is Gold Dragon but rumor says they still plan on a last free update to fix that. So yeah I think its worth it
I only bought the dance of Masks dlc so far for the extra content with your companions. The last Sarkosian could be interesting but I have my doubts that this Ulric is well integrated into the base game. Does he have a lot of back and forth with your other companions? I wasn't that impressed with the extra companion dlc in Kingmaker. Anyway, thanks for this video 🙂.

Is this game longer than bg3? You say 5/6 acts but I don’t know how that compares to act length in bg3. Seems like a massive game. I have it and played a couple hours but it’s hard to get into
Depends on you, but in general I would say its longer for most people than BG3 is.
Oh thank you for this. I had been thinking of going back to Wrath now that all the DLC was out, and it's nice to know the best timing for everything.
I'm also going to be curious how Through the Ashes stacks up to Varnhold's Lot in difficulty since it sounds like it has similar scarcity mechanics. (As while I loved the story in that DLC--especially Maegar's incredibly adorable romance--the combat was brutal enough due to the lower item availability that it was a serious challenge to beat.)
I wonder if I should continue my old playthrough, or start a new one. Will I miss out on stuff from e.g. Last Sarkorians ?
Everything that affects the main story can for the most part be enjoyed with your current playthrough. Last Sarkorians for instance can all be done in Act 5 if you want

I see there are the DLCs and season passes. Do you need to buy both? Looks like maybe you just need season pass 1 and 2 and that world get you all the content. Or is there an advantage buying them individually?

Youre importing the save from the DLC so the game knows what choices you made, not the characters
To clarify in case somebody needs it:
Season Pass 1 would be: Excess, Ashes, Treasure (ranked last, second to last and first)
Season Pass 2 would be the other three.
This leads to 4 reasonable purchasing options:
a) Stingy Edition: Only the base game (12$/€)
b) Consensus Edition: Base game + Season Pass 2 (29.40 Eurodollars; all the well-reviewed stuff)
c) Mortym Super Fan Edition: Base game + SP2 + Ashes (34.60 Currencies; Mortym's favorite DLCs)
d) Complete Edition: Base game + SP1 + SP2 (38.10 not-pounds; slightly more expensive, only adds stuff almost everyone hates)
Personally, I went with option b. If I ever get bored with that, I could always add SP1 later.
