for anyone who is interested in purchasing a portable painter, i'd like you guys to know that steve padden has taken in everyone's complaints !
I recently bought a portable painter and realized that it now comes with a silicone band around one of the buckets that can be used to hold onto the aluminum clip or any other pens and brushes you might want to bring with you.
the half pans now come with a reusable adhesive since a lot of reviewers complained about them falling out easily so they all stick inside perfectly now :)

I read the title as Portable Printer haha my bad. Anyway, I've never seen a pallete like that here in the philippines. What I like about it the most is the attached water container. It looks convenient! Reviews like this is soooo helpful especially for beginners like me who are looking for supplies that is worth the investment. Thank you so much!

I have watched many reviews of this palette, and I am finally going to give in and buy it. The only thing I might wish to change would be to have the water holders be either clear/translucent or white in color. I like to be able to monitor when the water needs to be changed. But, other than that, this looks really great. Thanks for another awesome review!
Based on what I observed in real world, you'll see the water from the top when you dip your brush in anyway.

Nice palette!!! I've seen pics but this was first in Action. I like that you showed how much water they held. And that the pans vary in size. I want one, can't wait til they're on the market. I like your product reviews you show details that are important but not obvious
Hi Teoh...excellent review and I ordered one. I am finding so many of your recommended products are right on. Even if I'm spending money buying stuff you recommend, in the long run I am saving money by not buying and not using items that don't work as advertised. Keep on doing those product reviews. Later edit: I received my palette and I really like it. I moved some pans from my Prima Marketing Classics set and my Winsor & Newton professional watercolor field set. The Prima half pans were a bit large but pushing down they poked out just a little. The Winsor Newton pans fit perfectly. They seem the same size as pans that came with the Portable Painter palette.

You could probably temporarily store it in the slot designated for the travel brush!

Excellent idea for a palette box. A lot of thought process went behind its design. I think empty palette boxes make all the sense. Just refill with tube paint.

I am beginner artist so my arsenal of supplies is quite small. However, I really like this product - the functionality and definitely the size. Think it will a lovely companion for my time spent outdoors or traveling.

Hi. I enjoyed the review of this particular product. I have been looking around for different options and this is on the top; it has sufficient number of pans and you can fill them up with your favorite brand of watercolors. This is no doubt, on my wishlist. Now if only I could set aside time to do some plain air.

My biggest concern has been the fact that these pans aren't standard, and I've poured all of my tube paints into standard half pans. Seeing that the larger standard pan do actually fit (though not ideally), and I wouldn't need to re-pour pans so I can change up my palette, depending on what/where I'm working on. Thanks so much for covering that issue. I always love your reviews. They're always so detailed and helpful!
I've read that the pans are clones of W&N half pans (which you can buy empty)
Reviews like this are helpful... it's details like the detachable metal clip and non-standard size pans which would make me avoid buying it despite the bigger water wells and being able to put it on my knee. Weighing options!
Thank you for mentioning PPWP in an earlier video, Teoh. I'm happy with mine, except for the minor matter of the metal clip. I hadn't tried it on my leg, and...it just fits. I'm looking forward to trying it out in the field (literally) when the weather warms.

I would glue a strip of velcro on top of the clip and the other half to one of the water tanks to store the clip on it. I think I would make the strip the same size as the top of the clip so its good and secure attached to the tank.

Looks like he's heard our feedback.....and is looking into perhaps a modification for that darn clip. lol I suggested he uses some decent/strong magnets. Perhaps one on the aluminum clip itself...(super glue it?) and one magnet attached to one of the water cups. Or maybe make the aluminum clip all metal so it just magnetizes onto the other magnet? We'll see. I'll probably wait to buy one until he re-designs that part.

Thanks for another great review! I also got one of these from the indiegogo campaign and my complaint also (along with every review I have read - such a great design can't believe the creator didn't think of it) is that there is no storage place for the metal clip that holds the water containers together. I am going to find a piece of plastic and cut it into the right shape and glue it just to the side of where the clip goes so I can just slide it onto the outside of the water container and not have to risk losing it. Wish he would have made standard sized half pans, but overall a great design. Maybe he will make a new version to address those issues. As for the issue for it being to big to sit properly on your thigh, you could use some sort of cloth to wedge between your thigh and the water wells that can double to blot off excess water or paint from you brush.

Wonderful review, Teoh! I'd offer a suggestion to Steve Padden, to possibly put a strong magnet on one of those side cups...so we can conveniently attach/magnetize that metal-closure clip-piece to it....that way we don't lose it during a painting session.
Ha! I have the opposite problem on my leg. It'll rest on my thigh, but only if my leg slightly elevated so that it doesn't flatten out in its resting state ;) Thanks for the review Teoh!
I really like this palette. Simple and useful. There is one thing I dont like about it... where do I get rid of the water? With a small glass I can carry the dirty water safely, but with this I am forced to tip out the dirty water somewhere. Well, its not dangerous to the environment, but it is like throwing away my trash somewhere but in the bin :D Thats my only negative thought about it :)
I just got my palette this week and can't wait to choose the colors to go in it! I think they now put an adhesive dot on the bottom of the pans but I did not try to remove them. A tip for others who want to buy one... I found a coupon code over on the FrugalCrafter's YT channel. I'm not affiliated, just happy to save a bit. :) Thanks for the review, Teoh!
+veransia Yes, the new version has pans that stick to the bottom. The pans are still removable.

That's a size 6 brush. It should fit most Rosemary pocket brushes because, if I am not wrong, most are the same size.
I think I'd just discard the pans and just fill the recesses from the tube - so more paint and no wasted space. It's amazing how much space a plastic pan takes up.
I like that palette. I use Niji waterbrushes for portable work. Do you think one of those would fit in the space where the paintbrush goes?

A rubber band would replace that metal clip. Now I have to check out the Rosemary brushes as I'm always disappointed in the portable brushes and their loose connections.
If you really want tight connections, get the da Vinci portable pocket brushes. Those are screw on type.

Just wonder is there a danger of it tipping over when you swish paint around in the palette mixing trays when it's on a table ?... I'd be tempted to sit it flat on the table and just join the water buckets together with the band and place them on the table seperatly from the palette. You really only need to have them attached to the palette if you have it on your leg or if you're holding it.
It’s very stable. The base is very wide
2 Questions:
1) Are you sure the Da Vinci (#6!) Travel brush won't fit in this box? (the daVinci #6 seems slim enough like this Rosemary brush?
2) What exact brush-size is this Rosemary Travel brush?

Da Vinci size 6 pocket brush has a larger diameter compared to the Rosemary brush.

If I am not wrong, all their collapsible pocket brushes are of the same size. I bought R1, R2 and R3. That's like size 6 - 10
DG Hamilton - Teoh has a really informative video comparing his Rosemary travel brushes. You might enjoy it.

I have an Isabey sable travelling brush that fits my Portable Painter very well
I bought one and the first thing I thought was "how am I going to dump the water and refill it?" It has a band to hold the clip, but it's too tight to hold the 2 cups together, so I'm going to hold them together with rubber bands. Defeats the little table idea, but at least everything fits in my Acurasee case.
The two water trays are supposed to be attached to the side of the palette, not to be held together by the rubber band.
What are your color choices for this palette? I’ve ordered one. 😄
Not wild about the brush..i put in a size 6 isabey kolinsky travel or a Rosemary size 8 or 10 round. They fit. Have to put towel on leg to have the palette fit . I love the palette itself. Definitely for my daniel smith paints (Since they made such a crappy palette for their paints) . Happy plein aire everybody... i love great tools.
Ps..i used soft scrub on the mixing areas. And now they include a rubber band for you to put the closure thingy on so you dont loose it.

I still use it. It's very functional. And it's plastic so it will never rust.
I just bought this and it came in just a couple of days (in the U.S.). I read that the slide clip is aluminum so wondered if you could just keep it in the clean water. Thanks for the review!
You mean like keep it in the container with clean water? Be careful when you pour out the water into a drain!
Why would pouring dirty paint water down the drain be a concern? (I flush mine down the toilet so as not to discolor my sinks...but is there another reason besides aesthetics that we should be concerned about pouring down the drain? Just curious. :)

I put two Velcro dots on the metal clasp and the other side of the Velcro on the side of one of the water container...now I can just stick the clasp on the container and not lose it! Thanks for the review...it does fit on my leg very well...maybe you need to put it higher up or like someone said put a towel on your leg first...and btw we are not "guys".. Thanks again..

I am a woman and I use the expression "hi guys" for women all the time. I am waiting for my Portable Painter to arrive later this month. If you lose the clip you could probably use a rubber band to keep it all together. I am excited that my Rosemary brush will fit in this palette! I don't expect to have your problem with the palette sliding off my thigh! :P
I'm a woman and always use the phrase "hi guys" for any group of people that I'm on casual terms with. It doesn't refer just to men or boys anymore, and hasn't for a while, really. I think with my palette, I'm going to attach a magnet so that it can hold the metal clasp. I just need one that's strong but not too bulky.
Check Amazon for tiny yet strong magnets. Just be extra careful to keep them away from babies and young children as they pose dangers if swallowed.
