  • Edit: Portable Painter sent me a replacement palette. Now THAT'S amazing customer service!!
One of my biggest struggles with painting outside is trying to balance everything on my lap without spilling. I frequently go for spontaneous hikes and instead of dragging all my big gear (tripod, pochade box, etc) I prefer to have a very small, portable setup. However over the years I've struggled to find something that fits my needs. #watercolor #palette #pleinair
    Until now.
So let me introduce you to my new hands-free watercolor kit!

I just bought one!! OMG I've wanted one of these for a while. Saw your video and thought "Bugger it. I'm getting one!" Also bought the gouache palette you have. Yes, major game changer. I Gouache all the time now. Thank you Sarah. ❤

I got my Portable Painter when it first came out and didn’t include the rubber band, so I used velcro to keep the clip attached to the side of the case when open. I also put a bit of poster putty on the bottoms of the pans. None of my other half pans quite fit, so years later I ordered extra pans and the band when they were available as accessories.

I love it without the pans. No need for those! I don't change colors frequently.

I'm glad you were finally able to get one of these :) I've only heard good things. I ended up getting the mini version myself, but haven't had the chance to use it yet. Looking forward to it though :D

I also just got one of these portable painters myself! I loved seeing others thought process behind choosing colors and palette set up. I plan on doing a video about mine as well.

Love mine! I use one side for water and one side as a brush holder. I rarely use 2 waters for plein air.

Yea I think it will be really handy if I add gouache because I use more water with gouache

I did a little swatch sheet and laminated it with packing tape. I slide it on top of the palette when I put the water cups on for storage. I always forget what colors are in my palettes between uses.

It usually takes me 3-5 times to commit it to memory, then it becomes second nature.

I've got one of these and love it, the one tip I would add is to get the paint to mix in puddles put a little toothpaste on the mixing areas and rub it around, rinse off. Got this tip from Loz Chadderton

I use a camping pad for plein air (it's padded, thermal, waterproof and folds up).

My plein air kit is just a bit bigger than my cellphone. I've got it all fit into a Lihit Lab compact pen case, with A7 paper inside. You can fit a surprising amount of stuff in that small of a kit!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 роки тому

Does that include your water containers? That's the main reason I like this one 😄

@@SarahBurnsStudio I've got a small watertight round tin for my water so I can take it with me to dispose of, and a small spritzer. I'm usually working pretty fast and relatively dry so I can pack it all away again though, not the sort of kit that suits your bigger pieces but might be something fun for you to try since it's so small & has little setup! I might tweet you a pic.

Plein air painting is very facinating to me but indeed travelling with all the different supplies is the main factor I dont do it so often. I am trying to figure out different supply solutions for oil painting aswell!

Oil painting en plein air is a much bigger struggle for me because of all the gear - I definitely need my pochade box/tripod setup when I do it, so I save it for car camping trips and such.

If you need pans or half pans to stay put a tiny ball of blu tac underneath does the job Sarah.

Yes great idea! I just don't have a need for them in this palette 😊
