    As FaerieDust mentioned in a comment below, this is also a terrific way to use FULL PANS in the original Portable Painter Palette, which I admit - I wish I'd thought of and mentioned in the video! Thanks for that, FaerieDust! :)

    They just came out with the sectioned off pans. For both sizes. Now you can put even more colors in! I love the idea of fourth pans.
    I think they should have a version without the plastic in the main compartment, like you show there’s a lot of wasted space. And the brush compartment could be even bigger, maybe even full half/full pan height!

      Thank you for the update. I was contacted by the creator of these products, Steve Padden, and he really liked that I challenged the designed and innovated a new way to expand it. That made me really happy! Their newer designs are exciting and I'm thrilled to see they are addressing options and possibilities to provide new ways for us to use the products for different means. Stay well, AmyX and thanks again! ~ Mark

    Very clever. Fun to adapt something and have it work out. Dremel 3000 looks very useful.

      Thank you, Mary Algar! Yes, I was about half-way into this and started worrying I was going to cut through the back panels and ruin the whole thing. Luckily, and perhaps with some skill, it all worked out and the palette is great! As for the Dremel, well, it's not an every-job tool, but when you need it, it's perfect. The last job I used it for was to cut bolts off the underside of my friend's toilet that had rusted on. It took about 20 minutes with the steel cutting disc, but it did the job masterfully. :)

    I just got the combo of both they arrived a couple of days ago. Very good products. I instantly noticed that if I took out the half pans I could fill the built in half pans instead with more volume of paint and used the half pans for another pallet

      Thank you, Sharon! Glad knowing you're all doing well, too! At my office, they've installed hanging sheets of plexiglass to keep us safer, which I'm not sure if that's going to do much if someone sneezes. Maybe reduce the risks, but not eliminate. And last night, we drove past a local basketball court where there were at least 50 teenagers completely ignoring all safety protocols, without masks. It made me cringe to think of how easily this thing spreads. We do go out, but always maintaining our own safety protocols. And if it ever doesn't feel right or safe - we're out of there! lol! Keep staying safe and I'll do my best to, also! ~ Mark

    This is so up my alley! I'm always happy to make palettes more space efficient, and the Portable Painter is an otherwise really well designed piece of gear. Removing the grid also allows for full pans, which I'm sure could be useful 👍

    Fortunately, now Portable Painter has come out with special pans for the brush slot so you can add up to 6 colors there. That will satisfy me. I just got the Micro now that they have come up with the ability to have more than 6 colors in those. I have 16 with the new quadruple divided pans.

      I love that! The creator of the Portable Painter Palette reached out to me a while ago, complimenting my ingenuity on expanding mine. I will always wonder if videos like this have an impact on how some manufacturers actually redesign their products? It would be incredible to think that a video like this could have an impact!! But, I'm sure they get a ton of emails with suggestions to consider, as well! Either way, I'm just glad they're expanding their line and making products to accommodate artist's needs. Thank you for checking this out, Arlene A Lennon! I appreciate your feedback and sharing the info! :)

    Interesting! I added 6 micro-areas for color--no dremeling--and not much expertise. I don't really use that tiny brush. I used hot glue to add little separations along the lines of the other colors. It works for me to try out some colors or add something that I might use once in awhile. I really love this palette. Just got another, and thought I would cut and sand things down so I could have the other side have 3 large mixing areas. Thanks for posting.

    Poster putty is useful for sticking pans down. Solid, temporary and reusable.

      I agree, A Remedy Project. When I first got the PP palette, the pans shook about too much, so I used putty to keep them in place. In fact, in the video, after I remove the original pans, you can see me scraping out the old putty with a screwdriver! lol! Cheers! :)

    Thank you for the tip, I love creative solutions to creation's problems. I will admit to not having tried the Portable Painter yet, about the time it came out and started getting all of these fantastic reviews I had pretty much finalized my travel kit to a metal box and waterbrushes. But this is causing me to take another look at it again, I like the idea of being able to expand it to hold more/larger pans and further customize it.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  4 роки тому

      Thank you, Robin Eliason. Yes, I am the same way with travel kits. I have this one and another, which I retooled a Koi set that held 24 student grade colors to now holding 37 Daniel Smith colors, which I take to work everyday and use on my lunch break (when I get one! lol!) :)

    Hi Mark! These adjustments that you made to the palette are so neat! It's always somehow fulfilling to get more paints into the same space. Maybe you can make a video on you using the new adjusted palette with two aditional colours? I'm very curious what they will be. :)
    Thanks for sharing your idea with us! Have a great day!

So, it was just a fun experiment to prove to myself I wasn't crazy! lol! I will definitely incorporate the update in a new video, for sure! I still haven't decided on colors, but it's down to 2 out of 5 at this point. Oh my! lol! Cheers and stay well! ~ Mark

    It would be wonderful if they just made this the default option, particularly if you use pans that are not the W&N shape and size, which seems to be an issue for many people. The new expansion pans are a great option, but this design in combination with those expansion pans would just make it that much better.

    On the one side palettes with slots are great because the pans don't move around. But on the other hand I can't put in full pans. Sometimes I have trouble fitting in other half pans from another brand because the sides are angled a bit more. Slotted palettes aren't my favorite.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  4 роки тому

      I agree and admit that almost every palette I've ever owned has been retooled, pried apart, cut into, and reformed to meet my personal usage needs. I've had products sent to me that I ended up giving away to schools because the palettes were difficult to use.

  • @paulfogarty7724

    The fact that those deviders are hollow would ring alarm bells about potential unforseen problems looming if cut. Anyway I have another palette with more pans and bigger mixing lid if I need that.
    I will say there is no need for those pans though unless you're constantly switching around. . Just squeeze paint directly into the spaces like with a Holbein ect.

  • @recoveringsoul755

      I can't for the life of me remember who it was, but I've definitely seen someone cut away the little partitions for the small mixing wells because they were too small to be useful. They're fine for me, but I could totally see myself adding a few dabs of paint to them too - I actually do that with my metal tins already, I've got a handful of little blobs of Sennelier paints in a lid mixing well of one of my palettes 👍

    Hmm, I kinda miss the grit lines with my Kuretake six pack (especially with that cardboard "palette" those come in), since I am one to be a bit heavy -handed when mixing up the colours and usually end up splashing some from one pan right into the other ^^'. So I was intending to get a palette for those, but since their pans got such a weird format, I probably end up doing the opposite: Sitting down at my computer, custom-model a palette in CAD and then let the 3D -printer do the gritty building work (because, let's face it, I'm a klutz and I'm not exactly any good with tools in my hands other than pens, pencils, brushes and maybe sewing needles :D)

    • @MDCampbell

      lol! "I'm a klutz." I actually resemble that comment, myself. lol! I admit that I've never used a 3D printer, but someone else mentioned it, too. It seems like you could come up with some brilliant solutions to a variety of needs. I'll have to look into that more. I like the idea. Trust me, this little project turned into a big mess with all the plastic dust getting everywhere. ha!

      I bet I could re-purpose that small mint box to add extra space! lol! But seriously, modifying this palette was worth it. This has become our "household paint set," so when anyone in our family wants to paint, they take this with them. It makes me so happy that it gets so much use. So, I guess making the decision to modify this palette actually had an impact on my family. Weird, but kind of great! lol! Cheers! ~ Mark
