  • Today we're deep diving the viral "Girl Dinner" trend that has taken the internet by storm and examining whether the trend could be influenced by the dairy industry. We watch a segment the Today Show did on the trend and I explain why I think it's suspicious. I also give an update on the "Butter Board" craze that I mentioned in the Aubrey Plaza/Got Milk video and discuss how that supports a possible link between Dairy Management, Inc and "Girl Dinner." Paul reminded me of this classic quote from his brother: “I don’t wanna cook things, I just wanna graze on endless variety of things.” 😂

    I didn't realize that the dairy industry had somehow managed to co-opt the girl dinner trend. I loved it because I have had way too many "girl dinner" days recently, aka days where I eat dates stuffed with peanut butter until I can no longer stand the sight of one and call that a meal. I hate how cheese focused it's become now.

      Yes I mean who knows for sure if they did but I wouldn't be surprised...I just find it interesting that cheese isn't integral to the general concept of "girl dinner" yet discussion of it seems to revolve almost entirely around cheese 🤦🏻‍♀️

    Why is our culture becoming so vapid? My brain would not have tolerated examining the idea of Girl Dinner, but I also would not have suspected that it could be stealth an-ag industry propaganda. This was a very perspicacious analysis of this trend (fad?) and whether it's organic. It's wonderful to see you connect the dots between this and previous analyses, and getting noticed by other Tik Tokers. I give you credit! Thanks for posting : )

    I used to do that before my vegan days. Assorted cheeses and things like sliced pepperoni. Was that a “guy dinner” and I just didn’t know it?

    We can think of some girls that don’t like this girl dinner trend…….the cows that are exploited and tortured for all that cheese. Nice take. Very interesting video. Thanks for what you do!💚🌱💚

    In my case believing that cheese is NOT addictive is what helped me to reduce my dairy consumption to the bare minimum. I cannot say I find the science on cheese addiction very convincing and I prefer to eat a low-bs diet. Meaning unneeded harm to animal is bs that I like to avoid in my diet/lifestyle and I cannot defend/excuse this harm with a cheese addiction that does not exist. (At least in people with a normal gut)

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  9 місяців тому +1

      I like your general mindset on avoiding "BS" aka unnecessary animal suffering. I actually agree on the cheese addiction part; I think it is "addicting" for most people in that it's highly highly craveable (like more than most foods) which tricks you into thinking you could never live without it. For me, reading that article I mentioned helped me see that even though I FELT like I was addicted to it, I actually wasn't and I knew that once my brain was out of the dependency loop, I wouldn't feel addicted to it anymore...if that makes any sense!

    • @ThingsYoudontwanttohear
      @ThingsYoudontwanttohear 9 місяців тому

      @TotallyForkable That does make some sense. However, I see several people using "casomophines" as an excuse to never stop buying cheese. For you, it was a road map to quit your "addiction" more easily. For others who want to stay "addicted," it is a reason to give up and, at max, manage their consumption.
      PS: I am not sure if cheese is harder to quit than other foods as I know several people that do not even like most cheeses and would have a much harder time quiting meat, bread or fruits if they had to. In my area (not USA), the cheese-lobby is not as powerful as other food industries, and we do not have cheese in every single fast-food items as a result. We do not have many places with cheese-stuffed pizza crusts, for instance. I can imagine that if cheese is almost unavoidable, like in the USA, it becomes hard to quit cheese and people start to mystify it, because of its perceived importance which in turn is caused by the constant presence of commercials touting its benefits.
      Just a thought.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  8 місяців тому +1

      @@ThingsYoudontwanttohear Absolutely spot on. The suffocating presence of the dairy lobby in the US absolutely deludes people into thinking they have a unique and organic dependency on cheese 🤦🏻‍♀

    I'm not so sure about the positive messaging. I get the idea that people should have the right to make such choices, especially when food can be weaponised (People agains others, and people against themselves). But the way she framed it seemed 'well, the boyfriend isn't here so I can't be bothered to put in the effort for just little ol' me', which seems counter-empowering to me.
    Also, before I was vegan, the cheese and meat would absolutely have been the most important thing on the plate. Cheese holds power over people for more reasons than the idea of casein-addiction. In fact, i think that idea is really over-played. Sure, there is a slight physical dependancy, but bearing in mind people can detox from cr*ck in a matter of days, that can't be the thing that still keeps me dreaming of proper melted cheddar-cheese, years after last having eaten it :( Moreover, I think that it's quite easy to develop an addiction to vegan cheese (I did, for a while) and that is casein-free.
    While I think you could definitely be right about industry-involvement, i think they're only amplifying what's already there i.e that people just LOVE cheese. Salt, fat sugar and umami. Casein or not, we're primed for that ship! ;)

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  9 місяців тому +3

      I see your point in how the “girl dinner” mindset could be seen as non-empowering, although I still find it relatable. I think the empowering aspect comes from it being a once-in-a-while thing for when you need a break from planning/cooking/cleaning.
      I think you’re spot on that cheese obsession is multi-factorial. It’s casein’s molecular breakdown + high fat + high sodium + any number of positive memories associated (childhood pizza parties, mom’s grilled cheese, etc etc). In vegan cheeses you still have multiple of those things (sodium, fat, satisfying texture, etc). I agree that cheese is an integral part of the plate, mostly because snacking plates are a perfect balance of flavors and textures and without the cheese you might have too much acidity, sweetness, crunch, etc. I probably wouldn’t make a snacking plate without vegan cheese, but I feel I can do so with the confidence that I’m not eating the harmful/addicting compounds of dairy cheese, and not causing harm to cows.
      Totally agree with your points, and as I said it seems like Big Dairy just get dumb lucky a lot of the time. I think the answer to my gameshow query is: “It’s! A! Combination! Of! Both!”

    • @el-bov8034
      @el-bov8034 9 місяців тому

      @@TotallyForkable It is a combination of both...and more.
      Thanks for taking the comment in the spirit-intended. I almost came back to add to my post, as I thought it'd be just taken as argumentative for the sake of it. But there's definitely a lot of nuance here, especially with regard to mindset, addiction etc.
      Thinking about it some more, though, I've never been one for just having a plate of cheese, deli-meat etc. There'd always have to be bread. And if there was bread, I'ma inevitably break it in two and make some kind of sandwich/sub. But these days I tend to batch-cook. So there's really no stress in putting a full meal together, on a whim. That being said, I might treat myself to some Violife 'Epic Mature' and some vegan mortadella when the Summer heat dies down.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  8 місяців тому +1

      The Violife Epic Mature is one of my favorite vegan cheese! I only like it "raw," though (unmelted), and it's funny because I'm really not a fan of Violife cheese in general.

    • @el-bov8034
      @el-bov8034 8 місяців тому

      @@TotallyForkable I also don't like other Violife stuff, but they really really cracked it with EM. It's not exactly what I'd look for in an EPIC mature, though. The kinds of mature cheddar i used to eat could take the roof off yer mouth ;) But in at least trying to hit 'mature' they've managed ot make a very tasty and versatile cheese. I actually don't mind it melted. But adding a little touch of Marmite and a tiny sprinkle of nooch really ramps-up the umami. That gets it much closer to a respectable mature cheese :)
