      TBH the "fish/poultry vegetarian" thing eluded me while making the video; I guess I didn't read it carefully enough and assumed they meant "pescatarian" 😂 And yes, here's hoping more (relevant, modern) studies will be done to dispel any misgivings about vegan pregnancies.

    • @NahvomaLena

      That’s what I was for over a decade, I would call myself a “pollo-pescatarian”, I would never say I was vegetarian…

    I'm all for books being released that encourage reducing consumption. But in this case it feels like such a 'cope' for RDjr. With that amount of wealth he could have a nutritionist/private-chef prepare all his meals, in.a way that offers everything needed (This would easily be able to be confirmed via regular blood-work). The reality is that re-incorporating fish makes eating out at restaurants so much more convenient. And of course there's the bonus of avoiding the inconvenience of being the odd-one-out (One of these kids is doing his own thing...).
    Shame he had to throw veganism under the bus to save his ego.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes I'm curious what the book actually says on the topic since they didn't really cover it. Hopefully RDJ is smarter than to think that just because he eats a certain way, he should push this as best for the environment (I don't have much hope, though). Commercial fishing is literally destroying the oceans, but oh, yes, we should be more concerned about a multimillionaire's refusal to eat some fortified foods or take a B12 vitamin every few days.

    Something I have been thinking about as a vegan is the role animals play in the "organic" farming industry. Animal manures are heavily used in organic farming since artificial chemical fertilizers are on the banned list. Those manures mainly come as animal wastes from the meat & dairy industries. Yes, some vegans have argued that there is vegan "organic" farming methods that rely on "green" manures, mainly legume and grain cover crops in the off season or in crop rotation, but these are lower yielding than animal manures. Another vegan solution would be to use chemical ammonia fertilizers. These are used in conventional farming and are made with nitrogen from the air and methane. When I heard the silly question about what would happen to all the poor animals we wouldn't be killing for food anymore, I thought maybe we should keep a large number of them on pasture land where they would provide us with animal manure for the organic farmers. They could produce manure to a ripe old age when they died of natural causes!

    • @vicentemariani8730
      @vicentemariani8730 Місяць тому

      Yes but at least now a days we don’t have much a choice on what manure we are buying but we can control wether to get plant based or animal foods and veganism isn’t meant to be perfect we have to avoid animal exploitation as far as practicable and possible.

    Nice ranting, Marielle.😎 "Without some animal protein I find myself with low levels of vitamin B12, calcium, iodine, and iron." Did he mean animal products? Because I'm pretty sure proteins don't contain any of that.

    I already saw the pregnancy thing on a Fox affiliate video on YT a few days ago, and dismissed it, because WTF is a fish and poultry vegetarian? Not surprised that the study was ancient, because this is not a current definition of vegetarianism. That this was so broadly disseminated points to an insidious origin. I appreciated your goofy reading of Downey's quotes, but does anybody take diet advice from Robert Downey, Jr.? As for The Graun: They often do this, forgetting the growing population of vegans in the UK who skew more liberal and therefore read The Guardian, only to be spanked by said readership. Thanks for posting!

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  11 місяців тому +2

      Truth be told the "fish and poultry" vegetarian thing didn't even register to me when I read it; I just assumed they were referencing pescatarians 😂. Ahh yes, the bygone days when people only thought of "red meat" as "meat;" that seems like a good time from which to use statistically insignificant data to draw conclusions about the health implications of modern-day vegans!
      And yes it was healing to see so much sense-making in the Guardian comments! The ridiculous comments like the guy rattling off the numbers of how many animals are killed each year truly make such commenters seem like dinosaurs.

    My third pregnancy was vegan and my son was born weighting few ounces more than my first 2! He was not deficient and neither was I. In fact, I felt much better during my 3rd pregnancy, and I gained 20 lbs less then with my first 2. I ate a very diverse vegan diet and included prenatal vitamins as well. So it is definitely possible to have a healthy pregnancy while being vegan. Great video! :)

      Thank you for sharing your experience!! It sounds like you did it in a thoughtful and healthy way which I can only imagine most expecting vegan moms would do. I know there are so many people who have had healthy vegan pregnancies and babies so I hope public perception will catch up to the reality sooner rather than later.

    One expert on the environment who is also vegan is Hannah Ritchie. She has authored some important articles for "Our World in Data." George Monbiot is another vegan who is very knowledgeable on the subject. Both have given TED talks about the environment. Richard Poore is an Oxford research scientist who is vegan and co-authored what is possibly the most important study on the topic with Nemecek. Greta Thunberg is also vegan for the environment.

    the comment section of the guardian question is refreshing, tbh. people say things like that headline to me regularly, as a response to me simply saying "no thank you" to meats at work events and things like that. i have remained calm because i know it is their mental gymnastics to justify why they are right/shouldn't change their beliefs. it is hard to radically change a belief system you've held your entire life, anyone able to do so for a good cause is very strong.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  11 місяців тому

      Couldn't agree more with your sentiments! I feel like that type of interaction you have (simply saying "no" to animal abuse and then people falling over themselves to try to "catch" you/prove you wrong) is such a common occurrence. Ironically, these are the same people who will then say "vegans are so obnoxious and constantly pushing their beliefs onto others" when in reality you were just like "No, thank you 🙂" 😂

    My wife has a carrot/celery/cumin/etc allergy and still makes veganism work 🤷 Very annoying when we accidentally run into some allergin in a surprising place though 😬

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  11 місяців тому +1

      That must be difficult but I applaud her for making it work! I do think there are a (very) few instances where allergies would make it difficult/close to impossible to adhere to a vegan diet, but those instances are so few and far between that they're barely relevant to most conversations about Veganism!

    The PR agency for "Cool Food: reached out to me to ask if I wanted to interview Thomas on the green life; they still didn't get back to me ; I said" with pleasure. Interestingly , they never mentioned RD Jr to be on the podcast; only that he was part of the project. ha! now is see why, maybe

      LOL, omg that's so interesting!! And especially interesting that they only mentioned Thomas; my theory about RDJ just being the "pretty face" to help sell the book but Thomas being completely responsible for researching/writing seems to be correct 😉 Hopefully they get back to you; would love to hear your interview!

    Farm animals have been selectively bred to the point that no longer breeding them into existence would be the kinder option. Chickens designed to be eaten ("broiler chickens") now grow so fast that their legs often cannot support them so they often die from lack of water since they can't walk to reach it. Ending animal agriculture would free up a lot of habitat for wild animals and they would flourish, including the original animals that farm animals were selectively bred from.

      LOL, so funny enough when I was researching I didn't even catch the "poultry" part, I just assumed they were referring to pescatarians. If we're trusting a study that was done back in the day when people didn't consider poultry "meat," we are in big trouble 🤪

      Yes, they & Daily Mail always have outrageous anti-vegan headlines, but then will randomly do pro-vegan stories. It seems to be a "rage-click" strategy 🤷🏻‍♀️
