@@raygartargaryen5927 the way the music industry is designed, no band or artist could ever rise to prominence without some sort of conformity. Or else they would forever stay underground. Story behind Louise Lasser from what I heard is that at the time, she was going through relationship problems and actually HAD a legitimate mental breakdown to where she wouldn't even leave her dressing room.

However she was doing the show 5 days a week like an actual soap opera, so add that along with a suicide attempt and her parents committing suicide, she had some personal problems!

Excellent comment. Sinead O'Connor performed on SNL in 1992 where she criticized the Catholic church for its treatment of children. The Boston Globe published its investigation of sexual abuse of minors by the Catholic clergy in 2002. In 2022, I feel that she has been thoroughly vindicated by history.
Right, I remember seeing her do that and at the time I really didn't know what the purpose was. Now in the present I fully understand what that rebellious gesture was for. I like the way she did a cover of Bob Marley's song War and why she chose it. A lot of Catholics don't know that the Pope is the U.S. secret military general. Not only that a papal decree that is still in effect written by Pope Nicholas V called Dum Diversas in 1452. F'd up sh*t on that decree.

Given she was from Ireland, she understand the abuses of the Church in a far more direct and visceral way. SNL: You’re banned from ever performing again on our show! Banned performer: oh, so the 10 people left who watch your show won’t get to see me do skits?
To be totally honest, if one of the other two broadcast networks ever put something up against SNL as competition, SNL would be gone pretty quickly. They're only survived this long because they have no competition. Their opposition is nothing but reruns of other shows and whatever is on MeTV.
Here's the thing, if you're a band, you only need to perform SNL once. You go in, piss off all the right people and never come back. Rage against the Machine and System of a Down prove that.
Respectfully disagree. He thought he was being clever. I always thought he was neither funny or clever. His schtick was being annoying and irritating and seeing how long audiences would tolerate him. Yawn.
One that they really missed about Rage was when they put the upside-down American flags up, staff told them to take it down so they did and then right before the performance, the band members *put them back up.* Also, they still used all the curse words. That band is a legend
It’s illegal to hang the flag upside down. There’s a lot of laws regarding the flag, and I’m sure the staff didn’t wanna catch flack for letting it happen without warning
They could have really threw them off by playing strangulation instead. If i was there i would have moshed it up. I am familiar with that scene at that time up into the 90's.

HANGING THE AMERICAN FLAG UPSIDE DOWN!!! 😱😱😱😱😱 … is a recognized nautical distress signal, and not only is it not disrespectful, it’s a recognized statement of concern about the state of the nation.
Sometimes, when these bands behave like I look at them and cringe… it’s like they are over compensating. I can imagine them talking before the show saying ‘what can we do to look really hardcore and edgy’. They just come across as trying too hard.
"Less Than Zero" was about the British 1930s fascist Oswald Mosley, and Costello felt that American audiences didn't really get it - thinking, for example, that it was about JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. He saw SNL as possibly being for him what the Ed Sullivan Show had been to the Beatles, and he wanted to perform a song that American audiences wouldn't be confused by. I get that his record label might have been precious about the change of plan, but I can't see why SNL were put out. Radio Radio is one of his biggest early hits, so I'm sure the audience were happy.
nope, which was why he was banned. Lorne Michaels DESPISES ad libbing on stage. it's actually the core reason most of these people were banned from the show.
@@angeliquesoul6719 So he had the fake dreads with him as well as the change of clothes the whole time without anyone from backstage knowing what he will do?
@@kyuven No, going off script is an understandable ban especially if they were warned not to. No one can really anticipate that from happening and on a network with strict airing rules, that could mean somewhere between a warning to a fine. But what about the the fake dreads and change of clothes? Somebody from production must have known what happened next unless he was able to somehow hide it.
Frank Zappa was a genius. Rage Against the Machine, Cyprus Hill are amazing. Maybe SNL should check out who they're hiring and try to be realistic if the musical guest really fits the audience. Choices made poorly by those in charge should not be laid at the feet of the performer for doing what they're known to do. For shame, SNL.
Elvis Costello was 100% right and showed integrity for the right reason, not just because he wanted to swear or smoke pot on stage. Pretty sure that's why they ended up lifting up the ban (in the most awesome way :D). Pretty sure Lorne Michaels was never too pleased with the idea of forbidding Costello from playing Radio Radio if I had to guess. Pretty sure the decision came from the top, but I don't know enough on the subject this is just my guess.
Still think it's weird that shows that air at night/late evening in the US can't have swearing or "dirty" humour. Like, why are kids watching a show that's meant for adults and also on when they should be in bed?
Charles Grodin had his problems years back in the early days of SNL as guest host. Only heard he was banned, but apparently he was invited back later on and refused it. Terrible. He’s long gone now, but at least he left behind a legacy with Beethoven. One, which I remembered him fondly for.
That was AWESOME of Sinead! She was a HERO for that and should have been honoured for her guts! what a woman. Yellow bellies who attacked her! Sniveling cowards!!
from what i know about Andy Kaufman he would have actually loved the fact he got kicked off the show his style of comedy was build around making his audience uncomfortable or straight up angery. this helped set into place what he really wanted to do, be a "bad guy wrestler" and boy did he. He did it so well in fact he might be responsible for wrestling entering the main stream all togeather R.I.P you lovely piece of shit.
The best part of the FEAR episode, was that the crowd moshing was comprised of both New York and D.C. punks, including Ian Mackaye from Minor Threat, Henry Rollins and i think even a little Harley Flanagan of the Cro-Mags
I didn’t see the Martin Lawrence/Crash Test Dummies episode when it first aired, but when I saw it in syndication and most of the monologue got replaced with a statement stating that it almost cost everyone at SNL their jobs, I was thinking that maybe it was too “black“. But then I read the transcript online and I was like, “OH.“
And Sinead would be vindicated many years later when the child molestation cases came to light in the Catholic church and how they were not removing the offending priests from their duties, but just shuffling them on to other churches.
Sinead O'Connor shouldn't have been banned in the first place. She also didn't deserve to have her career ruined over that, either. Adrian Brody's stunt is difficult to watch, and really is that unfunny.

Story behind Louise Lasser from what I heard is that at the time, she was going through relationship problems and actually HAD a legitimate mental breakdown to where she wouldn't even leave her dressing room.
As a kid my granny got me watching Mary Hartman,Mary Hartman. Great Spoof on Day time dramas! She abruptly left that popular tv series. Unfortunately Louise Lasser had dx MH issues, sadly both her parents committed suicide.
@@sondraW Yes I read about that on her wikipedia page. The strange thing she tried to commit suicide herself, but stopped herself and her mom got mad at her. It was probably for the best she left Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman since she had to act like she was having a nervous breakdown, but really had one on that show. However she was doing the show 5 days a week like an actual soap opera, so add that along with a suicide attempt and her parents committing suicide, she had some personal problems!
Then she should have called in sick
@@sondraWI lost one too that way but never brought it to work on my shoulders.

I find it striking that so few of them occurred within the 21st century. Adrien Brody, Shane Gillis, Kanye, and no others?
I remember back when I wantes to be a musician with a decent enough following, in that fantasy, I would be asked not to play a song, turn to my band mates and say "So, we're totally playing that, right?"
Adrien Brody in the thumbnail….
Love his performance in The Pianist.

Sinead O'Connor deserves a medal for what she did on the show not a ban!!!
Agreed
I’m surprised that the Louise Lasser episode is available on Peacock, not to mention that it even has Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s performance available.
Kanye West has me convinced that the movie "Get Out" was a documentary.

Actually, a pretty interesting list. I do remember watching that Sinead O'Connor episode - it was one of the most surreal things I'd seen on television up till that point. You sure knew something went off script, but she was surely on the mark. Unfortunately, it destroyed her career. Given she was from Ireland, she understand the abuses of the Church in a far more direct and visceral way. Yes, it was bad in the US and elsewhere , but in Ireland, where the Catholic Church had political control, the abuses were off the chart. They're still counting the casualties.
The Catholic Church is an endless source of abuse and misery worldwide. Always has been and still is to this very day

SNL: You’re banned from ever performing again on our show!
Banned performer: oh, so the 10 people left who watch your show won’t get to see me do skits?
Last time I checked they get millions of views
@@aw3706 It's called sarcasm through exaggeration. I can see why you're an SNL fan as you obviously have no sense of humor!
I would’ve lifted the ban for Andy Kaufman-he was funny.
Respectfully disagree. He thought he was being clever. I always thought he was neither funny or clever. His schtick was being annoying and irritating and seeing how long audiences would tolerate him. Yawn.
Zappa died almost 30 years ago, and yet everyone still knows his name. SNL should have been honored to have him host.
I think, like Esther Williams, he is only known to certain generations. Unlike the Beatles or Houdini.

One that they really missed about Rage was when they put the upside-down American flags up, staff told them to take it down so they did and then right before the performance, the band members *put them back up.*
Also, they still used all the curse words.
That band is a legend
Absolutely. Writing about raging against capitalism while esconsed in the comfort of their mansions.
It’s illegal to hang the flag upside down. There’s a lot of laws regarding the flag, and I’m sure the staff didn’t wanna catch flack for letting it happen without warning

Who would want to be on SNL in the recent years?!...
And as we found out, Sinead O'Connor was completely right.
No we knew then too. Sinead just had bad timing and poor judgement about when to do these things. She was right but that wasn’t the time or the place.
Adrien Brody can wear fake dreadlocks, but GOD FORBID you make fun of his nose 😆
My favorite actor, he has a great nose.
No both of those things are wrong

They could have really threw them off by playing strangulation instead. If i was there i would have moshed it up. I am familiar with that scene at that time up into the 90's.
Sinead was right! ❤️
They say they don’t want the hosts to bring up politics, SNL is very political
Most hypocritical shit ever
Shane Gillis wasn’t Banned!!! He was fired, and believe it or not, there is a difference between the two

It's nice to see that some of the people that got banned were able to come back even if it was in a much less significant role
Sometimes, when these bands behave like I look at them and cringe… it’s like they are over compensating. I can imagine them talking before the show saying ‘what can we do to look really hardcore and edgy’. They just come across as trying too hard.
He just hosted. Lmao.
As soon as I saw the title I knew Daron was gonna bring soad here
"Less Than Zero" was about the British 1930s fascist Oswald Mosley, and Costello felt that American audiences didn't really get it - thinking, for example, that it was about JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.
I watched the show that night. Either song would have been fine but Elvis stopping the song put him on the map as the coolest guy for quite a while.
List: Actors who tanked their careers (musicians have their own list)
A. Brody could be on this list
He’s going to have a bigger role on Winning Time as Pat Riley
Good job on this bit .
11:15 Wait, somebody probably has seen and approved Adrien Brody's bit prior to airing it, right?
nope, which was why he was banned.
Lorne Michaels DESPISES ad libbing on stage.
it's actually the core reason most of these people were banned from the show.

Not even close. He did that on a whim without approval. SNL had no idea Adrien was going to do that.
What Sinead O’Connor did is actually cool…just look at what the Catholic Church has become
Yeah it was brave what she did
SNL should apologize to her. She tried to warn people about the Catholic priest sex scandal about a decade before Spotlight broke the story.
@@AmazingThor exactly!!! It would be a step in the right direction. The Catholic Church knows they are in the wrong
Watchmojo has done this top 10, another top 10, and top 20 so now we're just say a list.

@@Stonecutter334 Nope, and I don't think I was when I wrote the message a year ago, why are you asking?
Louise Lasser was using cocaine pretty heavily at this time. She got arrested at an airport for possession soon after this.
Still think it's weird that shows that air at night/late evening in the US can't have swearing or "dirty" humour. Like, why are kids watching a show that's meant for adults and also on when they should be in bed?
I think they can get away with sexual humor late at night, but the "F" bombs have always been a no-no.

Chevy Chase has the reputation of being a Demon on The Set! From cast to the crew, no one can stand him.

Charles Grodin had his problems years back in the early days of SNL as guest host. Only heard he was banned, but apparently he was invited back later on and refused it.

from what i know about Andy Kaufman he would have actually loved the fact he got kicked off the show his style of comedy was build around making his audience uncomfortable or straight up angery. this helped set into place what he really wanted to do, be a "bad guy wrestler" and boy did he. The best part of the FEAR episode, was that the crowd moshing was comprised of both New York and D.C. punks, including Ian Mackaye from Minor Threat, Henry Rollins and i think even a little Harley Flanagan of the Cro-Mags
