To clarify the “a joke isn’t a joke unless everyone laughs” part, I’ll admit it was poorly worded. I was basically trying to say if someone plays a joke in someone and the main reaction is disgust and anger, then that’s not a joke. It’s just someone being a jerk. It’s like if in an office environment, someone just walks up to a coworker and dumps trash on their head. That’s just being rude. There’s no joke there. I hope that makes more sense.
Also, I’m first, second, third, and all other places before, after, and in between!

@@PickleJello What's hilarious is he didn't. It was literally the "Old White Man Says" joke but real life. I think it was on one of the episode's DVD commentary, but Dan Harmon said he started writing in lines for Pierce that Chevy would say off camera. I actually met a guy some years ago, who was at the taping of the very first episode of SNL. He then said he saw Chevy in the 90s, and said to him, "I was at the very first taping of SNL." And Chevy responded back not by saying "Wow, that's incredible," or "How did you enjoy the experience." But instead by saying "How did I look? Was I good?" Which told me everything I needed to know about this narcissist. And I've heard nothing but horrible anecdotes about him over the years. Nobody seems to have anything nice to say about him.
As for the guy who was the first taping of SNL. I believe he's been to more tapings of SNL than anyone else. I actually met him while hanging outside of 30 Rock one day. He was on the standby line for SNL. He's been to so many tapings, that SNL hooks him up pretty good, and reserve a spot for him in the audience each week. He's a handicapped guy. He has difficulty walking. But he's beloved by the cast and crew. Despite having that hook up, he still hangs out in the standby line for SNL outside of 30 Rock. I haven't been to 30 Rock in years. And he was a pretty old guy when I met him. Hope he's doing well though.

The thing about the AIDS joke is that it isn't even a good joke. Take away all of the shock value and dark humor what is the base of the Joke? People who have AIDS lose weight rapidly, so we are going to bring this guy on, say he has AIDS, and he will lose weight during the show. I just don't see a punchline. Substitute any disease and it still just not even a joke. Would watching somebodys hair fallout after chemo be a joke? Would you yell to somebody with early stages of M.S. "Hey you know you won't be able to walk soon!" They are not jokes, just things that happen. Nothing is being subverted, there is no bigger statement, just an observation that everybody already knows about. You absolutely can make fun of AIDS, cancer, or anything else, but at least give me a punchline.

It’s no wonder how Chevy Chase has gotten a reputation of being difficult on set.
Milton Berle, yes he was a perfectionist and wanted to have things his way, but the cast would feel bad for him in later years. As for Steven Seagal, he was a terrible Saturday Night Live host because he refused to tell a joke. He was rigid, and just wanted to be on the show for the sake of his new film at the time.
But out of the hosts for SNL that have been discussed so far, Chevy Chase is easily the worst host. Being mean and rude to co-stars, even those he had worked with the longest, is not worth it.

But it paid off for Mike Myers. If you know the crazy story behind Shrek. Shrek was actually a book first. Most people don't know that, because the book doesn't resemble the movie one bit. Basically the only similarities of the book and the movie, is there's an ogre named Shrek, and a donkey. Anyway, in 1991, 10 years before the Shrek movie was released, Steven Spielberg purchased the rights of the book to turn it into a film. It was originally going to be a 2D film. But after delays, and the success of Toy Story, they decided to go full CGI. Shrek was actually supposed to be DreamWorks Animation's first film, not Antz. They eventually got Chris Farley to voice Shrek. Chris Farley was a very popular comedian from the SNL renaissance of the 90s, and he had 2 hit movies, which made him a bankable movie star. So legend has it, Farley completed 75%-85% of his lines for Shrek before he died in 1997. And then the production was in chaos yet again. They scrambled to find a replacement for Farley, big names like Nicholas Cage, and others. But everyone they offered it to turned it down, stating that the Shrek character was too grotesque looking, and that they didn't want to voice such a grotesque looking character. If you look at the early designs of Shrek, you will know what I'm talking about. So they had to completely redesign Shrek, and make him cute. Eventually Mike Myers, one of Farley's fellow SNL cast members, who had just had a breakout smash with Austin Powers, agreed to voice Shrek, and take over for his friend Farley. So Mike recorded his dialog in his normal voice, and everyone loved it. But being the perfectionist Mike is, he decided he didn't like it, and wanted to re-record all his dialog with a Scottish accent. Costing the studio millions of dollars. But they agreed to it, because Mike Myers was the biggest movie star in the world, and they were already years delayed, and didn't want Myers to walk out, causing them to find another actor. So after 10 years, Shrek comes out, becomes the cultural phenomenon it is, and the rest is history.

I was fortunate to attend a couple of Friars Club roasts back in the 1990s and the early 2000s, back when I was a radio producer in New York. But the one of Chevy Chase was unlike any event I’ve ever seen where a group of comedians honors one of their own. The literal hatred of the man by many of the people in the room was palpable! I was told at the time that the producers had trouble finding performers to fill the time on stage, because a large number of the ones that they asked refused to do so. Several people who ended up speaking really didn’t know the guy. And the majority of the ones who spoke weren’t really being funny about their dislike of him, even if their shticks were filled with jokes. A few of the members of the audience were simply there (not going to name names out of respect) because they heard he would literally be humiliated and wanted to see it for themselves.
Most such events are actually lovefests loaded with humor in the Don Rickles vein. This was more like some kind of therapy for people he had apparently slighted, or even worse (this was before the me too movement, and I can’t confirm some of the things I heard). It was mostly an enjoyable event. I loved being there and having a chance to mingle a little with some of my favorite comedians, and it was a privilege to be in that room. But I don’t think Chevy had a good time. I remember looking at him and thinking he was perhaps more than a little dismayed. The special that aired was heavily edited, and some of the cruelest and sickest jokes never made it to the broadcast. It remains probably the strangest comedy event I ever attended. ua-cam.com/video/CG4W0OfzJjM/v-deo.htmlsi=vQREQ180cJtjvTM1

I get the urge to be cynical but actually think about it. The entertainment industry is full of a bunch of normal people like you and me. Some of them do this stuff, some of them are jerks, some of them just have bad days, a lot of them are people trying to do the best they can. That’s why the assholes get called out in the first place. Not every nice person is secretly evil lol

*Elvis Costello was banned after switching from the "pre-approved song" to Radio Radio, and wasn't allowed back on until 1989. Frank Zappa wasn't banned. He simply never returned. It is said that everyone decided they didn't like him before the show even aired, which some speculate that it had to do with is strict no drugs policy. Obviously, the cast didn't follow the same policy.

I have been writing a movie script for 5 years that is called " The White Rabbit Prophecies." It's a comedy, mystery, drama, spiritual Mysticism and Romance that is kind of like " The African Queen" ...... but ( without a boat. )
Truth is that Chevy and Albert Brooks Einstien are my muse and thier brilliance moves me. I have issues too with Severe Bipolar from 3 athletic accidents in childhood were I tried to jump the canyon like Evil Kenevil and never made it either. sigh
Chevy has issues big F#%^^#@!!^ deal ,...... it's the imperfection that make us all human.
Listen, my brother made movies for 30 years for Harlequin Romance and they are sadly formula art that woman seem to love but Chevy is a GENIUS that would not never touch " Formula Art"......... for any price $$$$$$$$$$$$ ......and that's why he's gifted creative, funny free spirit.
As soon as I edit this 8 part series and find someone at a studiio with $ 160 million dollars then I'm goning to ask Chevy to join the team that will produce from thier home screen.
THis is my calling to make this movie since I was 7 in 1967 is all charity for the cats and dogs that need all our help at the SPCA .I want to draw on all the great experience of older wiser artists and dig into that well of knowledge and give them great purpose to share insights into my work

So I'm not surprised they had a falling out or get along better than most of the cast.

funny if he told Robert Downey Jr. that his father was burning in hell in the mid 80s, it’s quite odd because his father wasn’t dead yet the stuff he said to Terry Sweeney I’ve heard confirmed by others. he attended the same college as I did, Bard College, which at the time had many very wealthy students who had a nihilistic streak.

Hi: Can you do a vs the network type video about Disney xd shows? Most shows at the time that were made from Disney XD have mostly been push down to the ground, not giving them a chance and canceling them for two seasons never giving them the chance.
An examle would have to be Jimmy two shoes. It was an imported show from teletoon that was sent to XD in the U.S. with the show being constantly censored for the dumbest reasons and being put on a time schedule that no one would be able to watch at the time (3.AM in the morning). Teletoon was fine with the show though but Disney XD cancelling it for these reasons
