📖 Video description: Two different people from different sides of the United States contacted me about fixing their rings that had gone through the garbage disposal. One ring was 14K yellow gold and the other was platinum. Both rings were chewed up pretty badly. I was able to round out the rings, add extra metal to the platinum ring, and smooth it out. The Yellow gold ring was redone using CAD, 3D printing, and the lost wax casting process.
I sort of liked the garbage disposal texture on the yellow gold ring.
I was actually thinking the same thing! Looked cool
Me too! Although sometimes, this kind of thing looks better on screen than in real life. But it looked almost intentional.
Well done!
Agreed, I think I would have left that ring as is other than making it round again.
Thought the same, but it would probably suck to wear.
That inside ring engraving machine is so cool! I guess I never considered how those engravings were made!
They can either be carved by hand, and engraving machine like mine, or a laser engraver!
Even though it was a different font and different size.
@@samueltaylor4989yeah, I’d have been sad about the different font and size of it were my ring
I love how you knew that garbage disposals were very American! My American relatives thought I was just a kitchen novice when I didn't know how to use it 😅
Alternatively, I’m an American with an intense personal aversion to using garbage disposals haha
In the rare but probably increasingly common sightings in Australia, they were sold under the very Australian brand name
In-Sink-Erator.

Not recommend when you have a septic system.
@@JV-pu8kx Oh course.
Depends on the system and what goes down it but yeah a 5+ figure system is not worth risking for the convenience.
@@Jay22222
In all fairness, it does sound a heck of a lot cooler 😅.
Although the joke might be lost on the younger crowd.
5:44 by far the mostt cool part- i really wasnt expecting it to fuse to it self so neatly and seamlessly
Welcome back Jordan! 😊 Yes your name will go down in history as the “Garbage disposal whisperer”! 😆
I guess dreams do come true!
can you please make purple gold
@@moderngoldsmith
It blows my mind how many machines, tools, and supplies are needed to be a jeweler/goldsmith. 🤯
Oh you could certainly get by with much less, but being the “modern” goldsmithing i am particularly fond of all the latest tech
The Tarzan part 😂 Zooey Dechenal is getting hitched to the hgtv guy and her ring looks kind of different. I’d love to see what you think of it.
I couldn't be a goldsmith because I'd just want to touch the liquid metal
Same
hahaha yea that's fair
I'd be too tempted to pour the melted gold into my palm instead of the mold.
Forbidden boops
Well, you probably would only do it once and the urge would be gone for good.
I like the texture the damage caused.
Might start using that method to add it quickly.
haha yea I like the randomness to it
You do stupendous work Sir. I hope the clients were ecstatic with their jewelry fixed. Thank you. God bless.
I just wanted you to know how much I love your channel. I'm going through chemotherapy and your videos totally relax me. Pls keep up the good work and thank you. Channels like yours are more than just an average video. They are also helpful for mental wellbeing. You're my go to video channel now during my treatments ❤
Watching the platinum meld itself is too cool!
Beautiful work, brother and great video editing!
Rings are very important, mine, saved my finger in a bar, the door slammed right onto it, the ring was bent into an oval shape but thankfully no broken fingers just complete sadness over the ring. But with a mandel and jewellery mallet, it's all better!
Fun watching the step by step process! Good humor, too!
Thanks Lora!!
It would have been awesome to get their reactions. The rings turned out beutiful!
I enjoy the story telling and the step by Sept process you go through.
You work is always outstanding! I loved them both 😍
Any reason the inscription wasn't more closely matched to the original? It went from mixed case to uppper case, and doesn't have the same feel.
I think the answer is that he didn’t have the tooling for that font or case. I imagine he cleared this with the client
Absolutely love this video jordan!! So descriptive and informative!!
Nice to see the process difference between materials.
It's so beautiful🤩, I'm a french teenager passioned by jewelery and I love what you make.
Keep it up, you are genious.
Wow, thank you young friend!
Great to see a long video from you again :)
So satisfying and fun to watch!! Please make more videos. Thank you :)
More on the way! Thanks for watching :)
You sir, are an amazing Jeweler!
Wow! That was great! Also, I’m thankful my ring has never been a victim of the garbage disposal 😂
Wonderful to see you back Jason!!!! I sure do miss your videos when you’re gone. I have a question; is it easier to size an engagement ring up or down. It’s a unique ring cast from a hand carved mold. My son “thinks” he has his girlfriends size but he’s not 100%. Can’t wait for your next vid!!
I'm a jewelry student. Sizing up would be easier as you can "spread" the metal, sizing down would entail cutting it and soldering it, or leaving it open, in general it's probably best to get the exact size you want! a ring sizer would save a lot of trouble down the line!
Your videos are a work of art and i’m thankful for them, i just wish you posted more!
One day I’ll post regularly….I hope! Thanks for the kind words
No need to pay for a subscription to learn how to make rings. It’s right here.
Run them in a rock tumbler with some fine abrasive dust and it'll smoothen the rings since the design it has made on the rings looks kinda cool
Great job, Jordan! Love my ring that you made. You do great work
I love the scuffed up gold wedding ring as it was when you got it! That style is what I will present to my future would-be wife!
wow your back after 4 months!! Keep making amazing videos lke this!!!
Okay but the Tarzan bit had me rolling 😂 4:04
What is the difference between the original inscription and the restored inscription? The old one almost like like it came from a printer with ink
Impressive! Nice work!
What an amazing work of art i must say , you sir. are officially a legend !! Using 3d printing to make the cast now that's something you don't see goldsmith's doing .... The channel name does live up to the videos , Keep up the amazing work the recovery video's are always really pleasant to watch , and i hope you have amazing days ahead of you !!
We've got them here in Sweden as well... The food waste is taken care of at the treatment plant, turned into natural gas that then powers the city busses.
I can't believe it took me a day to watch this video. I will never miss an upload again
Thank you, I was wondering where you were! I guess I can let it slide this once...
the gold ring looks amazing in its trashed state!
I gotta add a trash disposal to my jewelry studio!
I had a metal shop and jewelry making class in high school and absolutely LOVED it. My teacher Mr. Peter was awesome unfortunately LAUSD cut funding for wood, ceramics, and metal shop. I definitely want to do this again.
Garbage disposals - boy, been there, done that! I have drawer of chewed up spoons to prove it!
You said platinum gets easily contaminated with gold. What does it mean?
Congrats 300 thousand subs
Thanks for getting me there~!
What do you think of platinum as a ring material? I got mine since I was worried about a nickel allergy.
It's great, especially being hypoallergenic!
We all knew it was coming (fabulous course availability)!!! Question: Why did you choose to reform before annealing? I get the after (I'd do that too, of course) but, I imagine both rings were very work hardened by forming in its inception and then wearing and eventually disposal hardening. Always NEED to know the WHY! Thank you.
I'm such a nerd that I flinch when Sauron's ring is falling, thinking it's going to fall into the disposal, my thoughts go to Gimli's attempt...
I missed you!!!❤
I love this video!
I lowkey like the uneven surface from the garbage disposal it tells a stoy😂
I really missed your videos
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
hello there! what are you using to hold up your silver play button?? I would love to buy one!
It’s actually just a stand for a music record, haha. Pretty sure I just picked it up at the local music store
@@moderngoldsmiththat’s so awesome bro!!! I will check it out thank you so much!
What do you mean by platinum being contaminated by gold? What does it do to the platinum?
Nice job!
Good choice in music.
Sauron should probably contact this person... (;
Great Video !
4:14 - 4:16 I wasn't prepared for that so it's a good thing I wasn't drinking anything lmao
Nice job!
Garbage disposals seem excessive dangerous and failure prone
Great restorations
In addition to the price of the class, with the discounts how much can we expect to pay for the tools?
That is a tough question because it depends on what level of tool you choose to buy. For example you could buy a $500 jewelers bench or a $1,500 jewelers bench, or even convert something used for $25! You could spend 2-5K on a proper beginner set-up, but I've set my course up in a way where you wouldn't need to get everything just to get started.
@moderngoldsmith I have a lil experience with soldering and polishing but need that next step like bezel making or making a split shank, will this class teach that as well?
This class is primarily aimed for people with zero experience. A bezel is made at the very end of the course though :) I will be releasing more intermediate courses in the future!
I immediately thought LotR, when I saw the thumbnail!
Very cool, to see the whole process!
That is the best immediate thought to have
At which point did the poly-resin cast of the ring turn into a wax cast of the ring?
Great point, it mostly melts out too, any remaining residue is burned away. Hence the program cycle
@@philmorton4590 I bet it stank and belched out a load of toxic fumes...
Question because theres both talking about platinum and gold in this video: which is heavier by the atom? Platinum or gold.
Answer its actually gold.
Explanation: if you take a look at the periodic table of elements platinum is at 78 and gold is at 79 and that means by the weight of a singular atom of each gold would be heavier so is you have rings that have the exact same amount if gold atoms amd platinum atoms for each then gold would be heavier.
It gives them the meteorite look
how did they get the rings back from the garbage disposal?
Is the profile of the gold ring totally different after it's re-cast? I thought both the original (and the resin model? Was hard to see clearly) had more of a tapered edge than the new ring.
ı actually have a question. Do you have to fill the perforated metal jacket with the "pancake batter" to the brim? or like when the resin you're taking a cast of is low enough could you just fill the think up to its level and maybe a couple more mms?
Pardon my English as it's not a native tongue of mine :) and wonderful video overall.
Very nice
From that wedding rings pic its easy to see why thst gold ring slipped right off the finger. Hope you sized it diwn for the owner too
Cool Video! What kind of Ring Sizing machine did you use?
i was wondering why you used a perforated flask and then taped it up was there a specific reason or is it just what you had that was close and ready
The perforated flasks are used specifically for vacuum casting. In many of my other videos where I use the centrifuge I use solid flasks
@@moderngoldsmith thank you i know my question was kinda specific and a bit odd for the context of this video.
question, how can you sell rings for 2 bucks on your site?
i dont get it...
love it!
Had a question about your class, in terms of access to gems and metal, will I be able to buy mountings? For example unset eternity bands? Thanks!
wait the garbage disposal machine doesn't dispense into a compost bin?! it goes straight into the plumping and down the drain?! wtf
Goldsmith the 🐐 no 🧢
In some countries they are not banned by regulations but frowned upon by common sense
YUP
Did you made it gold🎉
Did you made it gold
Hilari as usual. ❤
Hello sir. I stumbled across your channel because my passed grandfathers favorite gold ring was recently damaged. I thought to myself maybe I can find a content creator that would be able to restore it. Please let me know if that’s a possibility. It’s not majorly damaged. Just bent and the gem fell out.
Never ever ever ever ever have any idea ever why my feed is what it is (ever) but this is some DOPE sh1t.
Am I seeing things or is the kerning on that inscription not right?
i once 3d printed a gold plastic ring with the gran turismo logo but i made it too wide and the walls were too loose on my finger. do you think you can make a better version of it?
absolutely. It might be better laser engraved...
@@moderngoldsmith awesome cause gran turismo is one of my favorite game franchises on playstation, and I would like to have it with red and blue colored resin
@@moderngoldsmithis the a way I can send you a photo of my plastic ring?
Masha'Allah.
True mastery.
lol I don’t think I’ve ever seen you not overfill the flask on an injection mold 😂
Wow platinum. Thats even more valuable than gold. 😮
How do you made it
How is the Ring 14K... unless the Shot you put in was 14K aswell? that looked like .999 shot tho?
No UV curing?
Welcome back! 🎉
Modern garbagesmith
The new engraving font for the platinum ring is not it man 😬
Agree but this was all I could do with my machine. Got a laser engraver since then !
Ok, so....Garbage Disposal = Sink blender. Gotcha...
Also, amazing repair!!
This looked so cool!
What is the name of the CAD software used?
Matrix Gold
Why does ever single jeweler use wax to put 3d printed models together? why not design the sprues right into the print?
