      Practically speaking, Tahani was already well-known in the afterlife after spending about 300 years in the rebooted Neighborhood 12358W, learning 11,000 skills, spending approximately 1000 Jeremy Bearimies, and befriending lots of demons & architects so I think it really happened off-screen since Kamilah died much later. Plus, I think many of Kamilah’s fans had to be tested for quite a long time in order to get rid of their own perpetual shallowness on Earth. Additionally, Tahani was also known as one of the original four humans who saved humanity with the new system and thus, her after-life legacy was quite hard to beat (even for Kamilah). However, the competitiveness between the Al-Jamil sisters was long gone by that point so it doesn’t matter anymore.
      P/S: Based on the dining scene with Eleanor’s and Chidi’s friends as well as the scene wherein she becomes an architect, apparently everyone in the afterlife calls Tahani by her name or knows her as “Tahani the Architect” and no longer “Kamilah’s sister”.
      What a subtle but poetic justice for our endearing character.

      Completely agree! I recall someone saying that only Jameela could have pulled off that subtle, poised, and graceful way in which Tahani handles herself at all times (even when namedropping or getting angry), which is shown from her speech to her body language. She was perfect for the character, in my opinion.

    The Finale did not "Fix" Tahani! One of The Good Place's primary theme's was self- improvement and the finale was the actualization of the Tahani that had been developing since season 1. The Tahani we see in her final moments on "The Good Place" is the best Tahani yes, but it was the result of four seasons worth of development and growth, not a few thousand Bearimys of off screen advancements. All those skills she acquired she set out to acquire because of who she was by the end of the journey, not her years at the destination.
    Fixing imply's that something broke about the character, but Tahani was never broken.
    A character that was broken by their show was Xander Harris, in season 4 of Buffy, because the writters had no idea where to take the character and literally had him drifting around most of the season. They turned that into a story about a guy trying to figure out their role in the world after high-school, but for a long while they couldn't figure anything out and literally considered killing him off.
    Never in Tahani's character arc was there ever a moment that said ":We are not sure what to do with the character".

    • @ithinkicanwrite
      @ithinkicanwrite  4 роки тому +53

      I agree with this comment, but this is the point of the video itself. If I may:
      "Fix" was more of an easy, catch-all buzzword that wouldn't require further explanation past the word itself, which is recommended for a UA-cam title.
      However, the video does say three things:
      1. Tahani did not require to be 'fixed' or to have a traditional redemption arc, but she did require an arc for her development to be finalised, as per the theme of the show.
      2. Many of her improvements and developments did occur throughout the show, but the final season, and the finale itself, was the last stepping stone to the best Tahani possible.
      3. While Tahani may not have been 'broken' as a literary device, as a human being she still had flaws that were present and that affected my perspective of her (as the audience) which were acknowledged and addressed in the finale in such a way that I found them endearing, rather than irritating.
      No, she was not 'broken' as a literary/storytelling device, or as a character, I agree. But there was still development to be done, actualised, and showcased verbatim to the audience, which the finale did.
      Xander is a different matter altogether, and I recall exactly what you are referring to. It's been a while since I watched Buffy but I think that was the case, yes. However, I haven't seen it in forever so I can't expand upon that further due to the lack of recent knowledge.
      I hope this clarifies the video, its message, and its intent, though I hoped it would be self-explanatory! Thank you for the comment! :)

      I always say The Good Place is more like a long movie than a tv show. You can't come in on a later season and pick up everything that's going on you need to start from the beginng to get the full scope and arc. I even loved that everything we saw them do came back in a meaningful way. Like when they went to earth for a while. At first I thought those episodes were kind of boring but they ended up being important later and I loved that.

Deep down, old Tahani never really believed in herself- after all, she was always never good enough, always in the shadow of her sister. The reason why Tahani learned new skills can be seen in that episode where she brought the new humans to the lake house. She told Eleanor she wants to do somerhing meaningful, and she feels her only real skill is arranging fabulous parties (which is a valuable skill on its own). In the better good place, she learned to do stuff not for the glory for it, but simply for the happiness of achieving something.

      I think it's also because their achievements in the story to that point gave her the confidence that she could try/do these things, which she may have avoided previously for fear it would just be more stuff Kamilah was better at.
      Strikes me she had that perfectionists problem of not wanting to be bad at things so therefore being more reluctant to try them, rather than being able to just give something a try and not worry about perceived failures along the journey. But I could just be projecting a bit there! 😳

    Like all of them in different ways, Tahani was hilarious. In her case, because her manner was so off putting.
    Really all of the principals except Janet are at least somewhat unlikable to start. But that they are played by very attractive people was a good ploy which helped the audience to root for their eventual redemptions. And for me, that was particularly true with Tahani because Jameela is one of the most beautiful women who ever lived...

    When I read the title, I thought this was going to be a video discussing how Tahani had nothing to do in the final season, and the writers clearly hated writing for her at that point. She was completely reduced to the occasional comment that was completely interchangeable with any other character, just because she hadn't said anything in a while, or some flanderised go to stock joke about clothes or name drops.
    I thought it was kind of cool after that that she ended up being the only one who's sense of purpose didn't dry up, since narratively she was the one that struggled with that the most. But it's still a bummer watching season 4, and just feeling how much the writers don't want to have to deal with her. Jason gets it too. That Nintendo Switch Ad that he does is pretty painful. But he still gets a bit more to do, especially with his thing with Janet. Tahani gets John Wheaton, plus a tiny bit of forced conflict with Elanor, and that's about it. She basically doesn't interact with anyone else throughout the whole rest of the show. Which sucks, because she's great. They should have brought in Barry Hemsworth or something. She could have been rebooted like Chidi, and actually had something to do.

    What are your thoughts on Jason's overall arc in the show?

    • @ithinkicanwrite
      @ithinkicanwrite  4 роки тому +11

      edit: just uploaded a video about this, so thank you for making me think about it! :)
      (rant incoming, haha)
      I think Jason was always meant to become/be a contemporary & modern monk (or version of Jian Yu). There are often a lot of times when he is lost and he doesn't know what is happening, but that is because he is truly at peace with himself. When he is not at peace with matters, he is truly, sincerely, upset, rather than angry or furious.
      His character arc was mostly about quiet, peace, and self-acceptance, in my opinion. He is wise, as he often says things that seem odd, but they give others good ideas. He is inpatient at first, but then he pushes past that and truly becomes a monk when he waits in the forest. And, he accepts himself and his role as a person as his relationship with his father is fixed in the finale.
      Also, as to those molotov cocktail incidents- they're not out of malice. They're out of a naive and innocent child's attempts at escaping negativity and repercussions, and who can blame him? Jason is all about expression of self, in the most direct and sincere ways possible- which is why dancing is a big part of his story.

    • @ithinkicanwrite
      @ithinkicanwrite  4 роки тому

      Also, thanks for asking because it did lead to the video I made about Jason having always been a monk! Thank you so much! :)

Plus they seemed limited to whatever earthly accomplishments they could imagine. It was good they learned that helping others was more satisfying than serving themselves. But when they reached their full potential, instead of that being the start of their best existence, they opted to make that their end! That said, it was a hilarious and thought provoking show.

    The biggest flaw in her character, or her story, is the lack of motivation. Season three and four gave her motivation to improve as a person but she had none in season 1 and only late in season 2. Since each season the human characters start fresh, except for season 4, I consider same human in different seasons a separate character. The last version was complete but the previous versions were not well written.
